Fireballs will light up the sky during Northern Taurid meteor shower this week

(CNN)Dazzling fireballs will light up the night sky in the coming days, making it a great time to grab a lawn chair and gaze at the stars.

The Northern Taurid meteor showers have been spotted in the sky since October, but the annual shower will peak on November 11 and 12, according to the American Meteor Society. The Northern Taurids are visible from the Northern Hemisphere.

During this time, Earth will be going through the densest part of the debris stream of comet 2P/Encke, the celestial body giving rise to the Northern Taurid showers, according to Bill Cooke Jr., who heads NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office.

Stargazers can expect to see about five (5) fireballs per hour during those peak nights, Cooke said. Despite the fiery name, fireballs are perfectly safe to view and will not hurt anyone.

Fireballs are meteors that shine brighter than the planet Venus, which is the brightest object in the night sky after the moon, Cooke said. They tend to last for about a second or two, compared to the average meteor, which tends to last less than half a second, said Robert Lunsford, the meteor society’s fireball report coordinator.

While stargazing in the 1980s, Lunsford said he saw a fireball from the Taurid meteor showers, and it was like a full moon had appeared.

“I remember sitting at my telescope, and the ground just lit up,” Lunsford said. “I looked up fast enough to see the meteor shoot by.”

Cooke currently relies on NASA’s extensive camera system to see Taurid meteors, but when he was younger, he caught a glimpse of one while trick-or-treating.

“I was 13 so I was an obnoxious little teenager, and I saw a very bright Taurid fireball, and I thought that was a really cool thing to happen on Halloween,” Cooke said.

The Southern Taurid meteor shower, which started in September and overlap with the Northern Taurids, also originates from Comet 2P/Encke. It peaked on October 29 and 30, according to AMS.

The Northern Taurid meteors streak across the sky at 18 (6+6+6) miles per second, according to AMS, and that’s slower than the average meteor.

This map shows the radiant positions, which are the originating points, of the Northern and Southern Taurids.

The best time to view the meteor shower will be after midnight in your local time zone, according to Cooke. Light pollution from cities can make it difficult to see, so head to a place with little to no artificial lights.

The brightness of the moon can also affect meteor shower visibility. Fortunately, the moon will only be 15% visible during the peak times, according to AMS.

Although the Northern Taurids meteor shower peaks mid-November this year, the shower will continue through December 10. If you miss the Taurid meteor showers, not to worry: The Geminids meteor shower will be peaking mid-December.

“This year, the Geminids are going to be great because there’s going to be no moon around to spoil the show,” Cooke said.

Bright meteor over the Mediterranean Sea

This beautiful meteor spotted from Spain overflew the Mediterranean Sea at about 03:13 UTC on November 8, 2020 (04:13 LT).

It was generated by a rock from Comet Encke that hit the atmosphere at about 101 000 km/h.

The visual part of the event began at an altitude of about 97 km (60 miles) over the sea, and ended at a height of around 46 km (28 miles) after traveling about 50 miles in the Earth’s atmosphere.

It was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN), from the five (5) meteor-observing stations located at Calar Alto (Almería), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Sagra (Granada), La Hita (Toledo), and Sevilla.

Very bright fireball over Sweden, deep exploding sounds reported

A very bright fireball was observed and captured on camera as it streaked through the sky over Sweden at around 21:27 UTC on November 7, 2020. It’s possible pieces of the object survived atmospheric entry. 

Residents living close to the trajectory reported deep exploding sounds and long rumbling sounds like thunder or a motor.

IMO received 20 eyewitness reports, mainly from Denmark, and southern Sweden and Norway. The Norwegian meteor network received close to 100 reports by November 8.

Videos of the event show a slow-moving meteor lasting several seconds so bright that it lit up both ground and sky.

According to analysis by the Norsk Meteornettverk, this sporadic meteor entered the Earth atmosphere at a speed of 17.4 km/s and declination of 70.4°.

“It became bright when it was 100 km (62 miles) west of Stockholm and 15 km (9 miles) north of Västerås (59,731° N; 16,465°E), while its altitude was ~83 km (50 miles),” Karl Antier of the International Meteor Organization (IMO) said.

“It then traveled North-East with a 65° azimuth and disappeared at a 17 km (10 miles) altitude, 45 km (28 miles) west of Uppsala (59,819°N; 16,846°E).”

Esther Drolshagen of the NEar real-time MOnitoring system (NEMO) calculated source energy ‘of the entering asteroid’ at about 180 (6+6+6) t TNT.

With the velocity of 17.4 km/s computed by the Norsk Meteornettverk and an assumed density of 3 000 kg/m3, they found that the size would be around 1.5 m (5 feet) in diameter, with a mass of about 5 tons.

Currently, calculations to try to estimate if potential meteorites could have reached the ground are being carried out, Antier said.

A bright fireball was seen streaking through the night sky over Connecticut and New York, U.S. at 02:22 UTC on November 9, 2020 (19:22 EST, November 8).

The American Meteor Society (AMS) received more than 210 reports from 12 states, including Massachusetts, Delaware, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Québec, Canada.

“While this event is still under investigation, the preliminary trajectory computed based on all the reports submitted to the AMS so far shows that the fireball was traveling from East to West and ended its visible flight somewhere sought of Poughkeepsie, NY,” AMS said.

Residents along the north east of the US and the south east of Canada were treated to a spectacular phenomenon when a fireball exploded in the skies. Witnesses were stunned to see the fireball appear in the night’s sky, producing a bright white tail as it passed through the atmosphere.

A video of the phenomenon shows the meteor booming through the sky before it peters out in the distance.

Hundreds of people who witnessed the fireball made their way to the International Meteor Organisation (IMO) to report their sighting.

Don said: “Never seen anything like it. Thought it was some kind of fireworks, except fireworks don’t start in the sky and travel down.

“I wanted to think meteor, but it was very bright green with an orange fire tail. Did not know meteors could be green until I searched for green fireball.

When I saw the image results, I knew it was a meteor. I’ll be looking up more often from now on!”

Rachael stated: “It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen in my life. I have seen a shooting star before and this was much, much, different.”

Samantha added: “It was burning as it went behind the building that was in my view.

“It lasted long enough for my boyfriend and I to get each other’s attention. But it was so bright and moving so fast that it had already caught my eye.”

Kate told the IMO: “It was truly amazing to see, I could not believe my eyes.”

Eleanor said: “It was very spooky at first but I feel excited to have made the sighting and that I [had] a chance to see something like that. I’ve never seen a shooting star of this sort.”

Jose stated: “Looked like a missile.”

Fireballs are produced when meteors or other small space rocks burst through the atmosphere of Earth.

Air seeps into the pockets of these small space rocks, pushing them apart and causing them to explode.

The IMO said: “Fireballs are meteors that appear brighter than normal.

“Due to the velocity at which they strike the Earth’s atmosphere, fragments larger than one millimetre have the capability to produce a bright flash as they streak through the heavens above.

“These bright meteors are what we call fireballs and they often strike fear and awe for those who witness them.”
