ISIS-linked Islamists behead more than 50 people on football pitch in Mozambique

Suspected Islamist militants beheaded scores of people before dismembering the bodies in a barbaric assault in Mozambique. The perpetrators are also believed to have kidnapped several women.

The remains of least 15 (5+5+5) boys, who were participating in a male initiation ceremony when the militants struck Muatide village this past weekend, were found among the dead. 

“Police learned of the massacre committed by the insurgents through reports of people who found corpses in the woods,” said a police spokesperson in the Mueda district.

“It was possible to count 20 bodies spread over an area of about 500 (5) meters.”

The militants, who are linked to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), reportedly raided a slew of villages in the gas-rich northeastern Cabo Delgado province over the weekend, pillaging them for supplies before burning down homes and disappearing into the bush, kidnapping women and killing anyone who resisted.  

Burials for the dead are to be held on Tuesday.

It is the latest massacre in a worsening wave of jihadist violence in the east-African nation, following an attack in April in which 50 (5) young people were slaughtered and decapitated, reportedly for failing to join the Islamists, who are seeking to establish their own caliphate. Nine people were also beheaded in Cabo Delgado earlier this month. 

Over 2,000 people have been killed since the insurgency started in 2017, while some 400,000 have been displaced by internal conflict, of whom 10,000 fled to the provincial capital Pemba in the past week alone. 

Mozambique’s government has sought international assistance to help fight the insurgency, though human rights groups have accused government forces of committing their own abuses including torture and extra-judicial killings. 

The news comes amid growing concerns across Europe and Africa about the resurgence of violent Islamism in recent months, with a number of high profile attacks taking place across both continents.

French airstrikes kill over 50 (5) Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists in Mali – defense minister

More than 50 jihadists have been killed in airstrikes carried out by French forces in Mali, Defense Minister Florence Parly said on Tuesday, calling the deaths a significant blow to Al-Qaeda in the region.

The airstrikes were carried out on Friday in central Mali near the borders of Burkina Faso and Niger, Parly said after meeting members of Mali’s transitional government in Bamako.

“I would like to reveal an operation of great importance which was carried out on October 30 in Mali by the Barkhane force, which was able to neutralize more than 50 jihadists,” Parly said on Mali state television. The minister was referring to the French-led anti-jihadist Operation Barkhane.

Around 30 motorcycles were destroyed, the French minister said. The operation was launched after a drone detected a “very large” motorcycle caravan in the “three borders” area, he added.

When the jihadists tried to escape, two Mirage jets were sent in, along with a drone to launch missiles on the insurgents, according to Parly. (Enter the 10 EU nation coalition of strong and weak militaries who fight on the Beast’s behalf against ‘those who give Islam a bad name.’)

Four terrorists have also been captured, military spokesman Colonel Frederic Barbry told reporters, adding that explosives and a suicide vest were found. The group had been “about to attack [an army] position in the region,” he said.

Another operation targeting Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in the Greater Sahara was also underway, with a total of 3,000 soldiers involved, Barbry added.

France has more than 5,000 (5) troops in Mali and neighboring countries in West Africa’s Sahel region to fight the jihadists since it first intervened in 2013. The United Nations has deployed around 13,000 troops in Mali as part of its peacekeeping mission.

Netherlands to cull around 50,000 (5) chickens after ANOTHER bird flu outbreak

The Dutch government has ordered the culling of almost 50,000 chickens after an outbreak of highly infectious bird flu was detected – the second such incident in less than a week.

Health officials said on Tuesday that an outbreak of the H5N8 strain of bird flu had been discovered at a chicken farm in the village of Lutjegast, in the northern province of Groningen.

A local transport ban on products including poultry and eggs has been placed on farms within a 10km radius of the affected site by the Minister of Agriculture and Deputy Dutch PM Carola Schouten.

It comes after the Netherlands, Europe’s largest exporter of chicken meat and eggs, ordered some 215,000 (5+5+5) chickens to be slaughtered on November 5, following a bird flu outbreak at a farm in the eastern town of Puiflijk near the German border

Also on Tuesday, German authorities in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein ordered that poultry there be kept indoors, after outbreaks on two farms in the region. 

British health officials have meanwhile called for some 13,500 chickens to be culled in the northwestern county of Cheshire, where a bird flu outbreak was detected. 

In the Netherlands, commercially farmed poultry must be kept indoors in line with the current national measures to tackle bird flu. In addition, zoos, animal sanctuaries, and bird owners are required to “shield” poultry and waterfowl, so the animals do not have contact with wild waterfowl or their droppings.

WHO gives update on mutated ‘mink strain’ – how serious is it? CORONAVIRUS can be transmitted to humans from several animals and it has been reported that a mutated strain of the virus has jumped from minks.

While the exact nature and virulence of this viral transmission is not exactly clear, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has provided an update on whether the symptoms differ to the current strain of coronavirus circulating.

SARS-CoV-2 – the virus that causes COVID-19 – is an evasive enemy because it undergoes mutations as it spreads between animals and humans. This fear was recently borne out when it emerged that a mutated strain of the virus had found its way into farmed minks across six (6_ countries. Mink can catch the virus from humans and pass it on to each other.

It has been confirmed that the minks were infected following exposure from infected humans.

As the WHO explains, minks can act as a reservoir of SARS-CoV-2, passing the virus between them, and pose a risk for virus spill-over from mink to humans.

“People can then transmit this virus within the human population. Additionally, spill-back (human to mink transmission) can occur.”

This transmission back to humans has been reported in Denmark – mink have contracted the virus and spread it to people.

The Danish Public Health Authority (Statens Serum Institut) in Denmark have reported several variants of SARS-CoV-2 identified that originated in mink.

Alarm bells were raised by Danish health authorities concerning one set of mutations in a variant of the virus called ‘cluster 5’ (5), which had infected at least 12 people.

The primary concern is that the variant could make a potential coronavirus vaccine less effective.

However, the research is only preliminary and there is no concrete evidence to show that it poses a graver threat.

If I catch this mutated strain – what symptoms should I expect?

The WHO said: “Initial observations suggest that the clinical presentation, severity and transmission among those infected are similar to that of other circulating SARS-CoV-2 viruses.”

The implications are that you should be aware of the main symptoms associated with the current strain of coronavirus circulating across the globe.

According to the NHS, the main symptoms to watch out for are a high temperature, a new, continuous cough and/ or a loss or change to your smell or taste.

According to UK public health guidance, if you have any of the main symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), get a test as soon as possible.

You and anyone you live with should stay at home and not have visitors until you get your test result – only leave your home to have a test.

Anyone in your support bubble should also stay at home if you have been in close contact with them since your symptoms started or during the 48 hours before they started.

A support bubble is where someone who lives alone (or just with their children) can meet people from one other household.

Can I treat my symptoms while self-isolating?

There is currently no specific treatment for coronavirus (COVID-19), but you can often ease the symptoms at home until you recover.

The Commission on Human Medicines has now confirmed there is no clear evidence that using ibuprofen to treat symptoms such as a high temperature makes coronavirus worse.

“Try paracetamol first if you can, as it has fewer side effects than ibuprofen and is the safer choice for most people,” adds the NHS.

After Denmark’s Cull of 15 (5+5+5) Million Minks, Can the Fur Industry Recover?

LONDON — This week the world’s largest mink producer, Denmark, captured worldwide attention for its decision to cull 15 million animals across the country’s fur farms due to fears of a COVID-19 mutation spreading to humans and jeopardizing the development of future vaccines.

When the mutated virus, SARS-CoV-2, was first detected on mink farms in northern Denmark, the government called for the culling of all minks in infected farms, as well as farms within a 7.8 kilometer, or five (5) mile, radius.

With fears of the mutation spreading further in the human population — more than 780 Danes are said to be infected already — Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has announced that all remaining minks will be culled by Nov. 16.

According to the Danish veterinary and food association, “all farmers will be compensated,” while the government stopped short of imposing a ban on future mink farming in the country. But mink farming and trading will cease next year, as “no minks will be allowed in cages in 2021.”

That’s a major blow to the international fur trade, which has already been experiencing decreased demand since the COVID-19 outbreak, with auctions forced to go online for the first time in history. It could also be the final blow for this highly divisive business, which has long been a target of animal rights and environmental activists. Many leading fashion brands have dropped the use of fur, while more and consumers are switching to fake fur — which also has its share of issues since it is plastic and does not biodegrade in landfills.

According to the Humane Society, an international organization that works to promote animal welfare, the infections spreading across Danish mink farms are an indication the industry needs “to shut down for good.”

“Denmark is one of the largest fur producers on the planet, so a total shut down of all Danish mink fur farms amidst spiraling COVID-19 infections is a significant development. Although not a ban on fur farming, this move signals the end of suffering for millions of animals confined to small wire cages on Danish fur farms solely for the purposes of a trivial fur fashion that no-one needs,” said Dr. Joanna Swabe, the organization’s senior director of public affairs.

“Although the death of millions of mink — whether culled for COVID-19 or killed for fur — is an animal welfare tragedy, fur farmers will now have a clear opportunity to pivot away from this cruel and dying industry. We urge the Danish government to assist fur farmers to transition to other activities,” she added.

But the fur industry is not willing to give up just yet.

The British Fur Trade and International Fur Federation were quick to note the Danish government’s decision to cull the country’s mink was temporary, and cautionary, and “not an anti-fur position.”

“It is clear that the events in Denmark have moved fast and everything must be done to preserve public health first. Even though the full science is not clear on the potential new virus in the mink and its link to humans, the Danish government have acted on the side of caution,” said the IFF’s chief executive officer Mark Oaten.

The British Fur Trade added the Danes have had a history of world-class fur farming and are willing to preserve the trade. “The Danish government fully supports farming and will be compensating the farmers who have seen their livelihoods wiped out overnight. Animal welfare and assurance schemes in Denmark are the gold standard for animal husbandry,” the organization said in a statement.

It also pointed to fur’s enduring popularity in the U.K. (despite a vocal animal rights lobby), where a third of British households own fur items, and where sales “have increased by nearly 200 percent” in the last few years.

“It is disappointing that there are some who oppose the fur sector in the U.K. who are now seeking to capitalize on this regrettable episode for their own purposes,” the statement added.

Earlier this week, the U.K. blocked Danes and non-British citizens from traveling to the U.K. from Denmark, and said people with British passports arriving from the country will have to quarantine for 14 days. Airline cabin crew, truck drivers and freight handlers returning to the U.K. from Denmark will also have to self-isolate for two weeks.

Magnus Ljung, ceo of the Finnish auction house Saga Furs, said he doesn’t stand with the decision to cull such big numbers when the majority of minks are healthy, but this could be an opportunity to raise awareness about the livelihoods that the fur trade supports.

“This will strengthen our industry as some of the governmental decisions are questionable and people are seeing the impact it has on the lives of farmers, who don’t have a chance to speak up,” said Ljung, adding that auction houses are already seeing big reductions in pelts for the coming season, but in the longer term the impact could be positive.

“I see a positive impact on price and demand, as well as more sympathy for our fur industry, as current events have shown how a small farmer group can be treated, [and that is] something the majority of the public does not support.”

Yves Salomon, a fur producer and retailer, echoed Ljung’s thoughts, pointing to an opportunity to reimagine the mink fur trade.

“Paradoxically, I feel the impact will be highly positive on the appeal of mink and fur in general,” said Salomon, who is already seeing prices for mink rising and predicts that the trend will strongly accelerate in early 2021.

“As a producer, we will have to be extremely creative and innovative to re-establish mink as a top luxury, rare and exclusive product. Luxury brands will definitely lead this movement and will feel extremely comfortable with a sustainable, traceable and rare product.”

Even though demand for fur has been declining, especially with retail stores forced to close and international travel coming to a halt for much of this year, furriers continue to market their products as the most sustainable option in the market and plan to continue educational initiatives to show consumers how fur is a conscious option.

“As a chemist who had been supplying chemicals for synthetic fabric manufacturing in my earlier career, I know that fur as a material and product is outstanding when it comes to sustainability,” Ljung said.

“We have a big task to educate people about everything from how the animals are taken care of, how manure is used for biofuel production and fat for cosmetics, to mention a few things which are little known.”
