WHAT WILL DATACENTERS LOOK LIKE IN 2030? Concerns around sustainability and the IMPACT OF AI WILL MEAN THAT DATACENTERS AT THE END OF THE DECADE WILL BE VERY DIFFERENT, built to be more sustainable, but also SMARTER AND MORE POWERFUL. The energy demands of datacenters are rising, with the International Energy Authority (IEA) saying they already account for up to 2% of global energy use, and this figure could double by 2026, equalling the electricity consumption of Japan. In the UK, the National Grid has predicted that THE ELECTRICITY DEMANDS OF DATACENTERS COULD POTENTIALLY RISE SIX-FOLD IN JUST TEN YEARS.
THE BEAST’S SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY: ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE, GENETIC ENGINEERING, TRANSUMANISM, ROBOTICS, INTERNET OF THINGS. THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION.
What is behind this exponential surge? New technologies such as QUANTUM COMPUTING AND GENERATIVE AI ARE PREDICTED TO DRIVE A HUGE SURGE IN DEMAND FOR ELECTRICITY.
A preprint Carnegie Mellon study this year found that generating just one image with AI software uses as much energy as charging a smartphone. But AI IS ALSO PREDICTED TO DRIVE A NEW WAVE OF INNOVATION WHICH WILL HELP DEAL WITH THE CHALLENGES OF CLIMATE CHANGE, from limiting methane emissions from waste to designing ‘clean’ nuclear fusion reactors. One of the key challenges of this decade is to UNLEASH THE BENEFITS OF AI WHILE MANAGING ITS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT.

Business leaders need to take a holistic view of the environmental impact of datacenters, including everything from the sources of energy used to how servers are shipped to the datacenters. Within the datacenter, there needs to be a focus on how servers are cooled and whether that energy can be reused in some manner, for instance to heat nearby buildings. To build datacenters fit for 2030 and beyond, business leaders need to understand the full impact of this technology, and then figure out how to implement it in the most sustainable way.
THE AI REVOLUTION
With generative AI appearing in software ranging from email apps to internet search, the energy DEMANDS OF THE AI INDUSTRY IS GOING TO CONTINUE ROCKETING, with one study in the journal Cell suggesting the power demand of AI alone could match the demand of the Netherlands by 2027. The compute power required to train AI doubles every six months, and Gartner® predicts that ‘by 2030, AI could consume up to 3.5% of the world’s electricity’. The IEA’s report suggests that adding generative AI to search (as companies including Google are rushing to do at present) could multiply the energy demands of internet searches by 10.
All of this requires the technology industry to design carefully for sustainability, not just at the chip level, but at the server level and datacenter level. It’s also worth bearing in mind that there is a flipside to this in terms of the environmental benefits of innovations sparked by new technologies. EMERGING TECHNOLOGY SUCH AS QUANTUM COMPUTING WILL BE MORE ENERGY-EFFICIENT, AND COULD ALSO MEAN THAT PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED EXPONENTIALLY FASTER THAN CLASSICAL COMPUTERS. BOTH QUANTUM AND AI ARE EXPECTED TO DRIVE RAPID INNOVATION IN EVERYTHING FROM DEMAND RESPONSE IN THE ELECTRICITY GRID TO PHOTOVOLTAICS TO ELECTRICITY GENERATION TECHNOLOGY. THE ‘SMART GRIDS’ OF THE FUTURE WILL BE POWERED BY AI. In building decarbonisation, to take one example, Mckinsey estimates that AI can accelerate the process 100-fold compared to existing technologies.
Built for sustainability
The datacenter of the future will be designed from the bottom up with sustainability in mind. Technologies such as warm water cooling enable high performance with far less energy use, provided a host of power consumption benefits. For instance, in datacenters that use warm water-cooling, there is much less need for high-speed fans to dissipate heat. Air-cooling systems can often consume vast amounts of energy in themselves.
Furthermore, any wasted heat can be reused effectively because warm water-cooling systems produce heat waste at a temperature that is more easily reused for other purposes. Not only will this improve energy efficiency across an entire datacenter facility, but this energy can be successfully recycled in sustainable ways in the wider community. By 2030, recycling the heat from datacenter will become the norm, from heating nearby buildings and swimming pools to piping warm liquid under roads and walkways to melt ice.

When designing and building a datacenter fit for the future, it’s key for business leaders to take a view across the whole lifecycle of their datacenter and the servers that will work in it. Everything from how components are designed and manufactured to how they are shipped, deployed and disposed of at the end of their lives matters, and taking a holistic view is key to making real sustainability gains. Through this decade, asset recovery services (ARS) and recycling of computer equipment will grow in importance. Other markets in Europe have already implemented legislation to reduce the environmental footprint of digital technology. For example, France introduced a mandate that 20% of IT devices bought by organisations need to be refurbished, with a target of 40% by 2040.
Manufacturing products regionally to cut shipping miles will also be a key differentiator. The current shift towards ‘as-a-service’ approaches to everything from hardware to software will continue, with business leaders focusing on avoiding overprovisioning to cut carbon emissions.

A series of recent news stories have highlighted the massive advances made in the field of ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI), SPECIFICALLY IN REGARD TO FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGIES. For example, according to the BBC, the police used live facial recognition technology to scan the crowd at a recent airshow in the UK, leading to the arrests of three people. Last week, the Transportation Security Administration arrested a woman after facial recognition devices detected her trying to use someone else’s identification and boarding pass at Tampa International Airport. Meanwhile, NBC News reports facial recognition technology is being used at Major League Baseball stadiums across the United States, and Reason magazine says the National Football League is next.
Less than two years ago, NBC News detailed the story of Kelly Conlon. Conlin was kicked out of Radio City Music Hall after facial recognition technology alerted security to her presence. She was entering the venue with her daughter and a pack of Girl Scouts to watch the Rockettes. Conlin was an attorney at a law firm suing the parent company of Radio City Music Hall. Even though Conlin wasn’t directly involved in the litigation, the venue pulled her photo from her law firm’s website and added it to their database. Facial recognition technology instantly identified her as she entered, and security personnel showed her the door. This is the world in which we now live. MORE AND MORE PUBLIC VENUES ARE UNDER CONSTANT SURVEILLANCE.

Back in 2018, I wrote about China’s Yitu Technologies, a company that was at the forefront of developing AI and facial recognition technologies. Yitu created a technology called Dragonfly. Dragonfly could search and analyze billions of photographs and locate a single person in a matter of seconds. Connected to cameras in the Shanghai Metro, it identified over 500 criminals in a three-month period. It was so powerful, it could recognize people wearing disguises. It could also identify people using pictures that are more than 30 years old. And keep in mind, that was six years ago.

THINK OF THE POWER THIS TECHNOLOGY GIVES THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT TODAY. AS FACIAL RECOGNITION CONTINUES TO IMPROVE AND AS EVERY CAMERA IN THE NATION IS CONNECTED TO IT, CRIMINALS WILL INCREASINGLY HAVE NOWHERE TO HIDE. UNFORTUNATELY, NO ONE ELSE WILL EITHER. CHINESE DISSIDENTS, POLITICAL ACTIVISTS, ETHNIC MINORITIES, CHRISTIANS, AND OTHER “ENEMIES OF THE STATE” WILL ALSO HAVE NOWHERE TO HIDE. THE RISE OF BIG BROTHER
In George Orwell’s novel 1984, we’re first introduced to “Big Brother” – an OMNIPRESENT, ALL-POWERFUL AND “WELL-INTENTIONED” TOTALITARIAN REGIME. The book’s hero, Winston Smith, lives in A WORLD WHERE EVERY CITIZEN IS UNDER 24/7 SURVEILLANCE. PERSONAL PRIVACY DOESN’T EXIST. GOVERNMENT CONTROLS EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE. Monitors in Winston’s apartment spy on him when he’s home. Other devices spy on him when he’s not home. Hidden cameras and microphones capture his words, deeds, and even his facial expressions. His mail is opened, and “thought police” search for and arrest any citizens who dare to have thoughts or feelings outside of those sanctioned by Big Brother and the ruling elite.
Winston’s world is a place of ABSOLUTE GOVERNMENTAL CONTROL. No conversation, movement, or transaction goes unnoticed. The government is watching – always. In the decades since Orwell first released 1984, people have marveled at what they see as great insight into our future. And they’re right to do so. Because 1984 TO 2024 = 40 YEARS, IS BECOMING OUR REALITY. And unfortunately, all the examples we just mentioned are just a small part of what’s coming. Why do I say that? Because we’re only in the first stages of THE AI REVOLUTION.
What’s Coming

FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGIES PLUGGED INTO AI ARE ALREADY BECOMING COMMONPLACE. But these technologies will only become more invasive. In the future, the ability to see and hear everything will be even easier for government. Unfortunately, while most people object to this type of surveillance and invasion of privacy, their everyday actions bring it closer and closer to reality.
How? Many people voluntarily reveal the most intimate details of their lives. They upload pictures of themselves and their friends to Facebook, and they tag them so AI systems can recognize them. They reveal personal information on Snapchat and X (formerly Twitter). They set up doorbell cameras connected to the Internet (and sometimes indoor surveillance cameras connected to the Internet). And they set up devices like Siri and Alexa in their homes. These devices respond to voice commands and make life easier. But they also have a downside. By definition, they’re always listening. That means a microphone is in your house listening at all times. And some of these devices feature their own cameras.
In the past, all this raw video and audio data would be useless. It would take legions of intelligence analysts a century or more to listen to just one day of global conversations. BUT WITH AI, HUMANS DON’T NEED TO SIFT THROUGH THIS DATA. AI WILL SEARCH AND ANALYZE EVERYTHING – NOT JUST FACES. ALREADY, AI SYSTEMS SEARCH AUDIO RECORDINGS ON YOUTUBE AND OTHER VIDEO PLATFORMS FOR SPECIFIC PHRASES AND “UNDESIRABLE” LANGUAGE. IN THIS WAY, THEY AIM TO PREVENT “DISINFORMATION” AND “MISINFORMATION.” In the same way, they analyze video to find specific patterns of movement or behavior. Using the same methods, AI SYSTEMS CAN IDENTIFY COMMON TRAITS SHARED BY ENEMIES OF THE STATE. WITH THE ABILITY TO PROCESS MOUNTAINS OF INFORMATION AT HIGH SPEEDS, AI CAN ANALYZE INFORMATION WITH A MUCH HIGHER LEVEL OF PRECISION THAN ANY HUMAN ANALYST EVER COULD.
Once “nanodust” proliferates, it will form a global network with the ability to “listen” to every conversation on Earth. No one will be able to escape the ever-watchful eye of “Big Brother.”
THE COMING GLOBAL EMPIRE
So why does all this matter? Because two thousand years ago, THE BIBLE SAID A SINGLE GOVERNMENT WILL RULE ALL THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD (REVELATION 13:7). IT ALSO SAID THE LEADER OF THAT GOVERNMENT WILL EXERCISE SUCH TOTAL CONTROL, HE’LL BE ABLE TO DECIDE WHO CAN BUY OR SELL ANYTHING (REVELATION 13:17).
TO THE FUTURE’: SAUDI ARABIA SPENDS BIG TO BECOME AN A.I. SUPERPOWER. THE OIL-RICH KINGDOM IS PLOWING MONEY INTO GLITZY EVENTS, COMPUTING POWER AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RESEARCH,
Think about those statements. A GLOBAL GOVERNMENT WILL HAVE TOTAL AND COMPLETE CONTROL OVER ALL COMMERCE. TO ACHIEVE THIS FEAT REQUIRES A POLICE STATE THE LIKES OF WHICH THE WORLD HAS NEVER SEEN. Was such a state possible in the 1st Century? No. Was it possible in the 20th Century? No. How about in this century? Yes. It will be. And it won’t just be a possibility. It will be reality. GOVERNMENT WON’T BE ABLE TO RESIST THE TEMPTATION AI AND OTHER ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES OFFER. IT’S JUST ONE MORE SIGN WE’RE NEARING THE END OF THE PRESENT AGE.
Remember, global government isn’t the only sign of the end. But it’s appearing at the same time as the other signs Jesus and the prophets said to look for. Israel is back in the land (Jeremiah 23:7-8)… The Jewish people once again reside in Jerusalem (Luke 21:24-28)… Though small, Israel has an exceedingly great army (Ezekiel 37:10)… Europe is unifying (Daniel 2:31-45)… And the Gospel is being preached to the ends of the earth (Matthew 24:14). THESE ARE ALL SIGNS JESUS AND THE PROPHETS SAID TO LOOK FOR. AND OUR GENERATION IS THE FIRST EVER TO WITNESS THESE SIGNS. Think this is mere coincidence? I don’t either.
Jesus Himself said, “When all these things begin to happen, look up for your salvation is near!” (Luke 21:28). In fact, He said the generation witnessing these signs will not pass away before He returns (Matthew 24:34). The emergence and convergence of these signs is the #1 indicator the end of the age and the Second Coming of Jesus are near. For the first time in history, we see these signs. They’re all around us. So don’t doubt it. Jesus is coming!

The organization documented the cases of 15 people who were sentenced in 2022 to prison terms of between ten and 45 years simply for PEACEFUL ONLINE ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING THE LONGEST SENTENCE BELIEVED TO EVER BE IMPOSED ON A SAUDI WOMAN FOR PEACEFUL ONLINE EXPRESSION.
SAUDI ARABIA ALSO INFILTRATED AT LEAST ONE SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANY TO UNLAWFULLY OBTAIN INFORMATION ON DISSIDENTS AND CONTROL THE INFORMATION THAT IS DISSEMINATED ABOUT THE KINGDOM ONLINE.
Targets now include ‘ordinary’ members of the public who are peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression online. These shocking sentences send a chilling reminder to all Saudi citizens and residents that ANY DISSENT WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

These shocking sentences send a chilling reminder to ALL SAUDI CITIZENS AND RESIDENTS THAT ANY DISSENT WILL NOT BE TOLERATED,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Research and Advocacy Director.
“At the same time, SAUDI ARABIA IS ATTEMPTING TO INFILTRATE ONLINE PLATFORMS TO CONTROL THE INFORMATION THAT IS POSTED ABOUT THE KINGDOM AND ITS LEADERS. SUCH REPRESSIVE TACTICS EXPOSE THE HYPOCRISY OF SAUDI ARABIA ORGANIZING GLOBAL EVENTS THAT PURPORT TO CHAMPION THE FREE FLOW OF INFORMATION ONLINE.”
All 15 individuals were prosecuted by the Specialized Criminal Court (SCC) which was originally set up to try terrorism cases. The SCC has used vague provisions under the anti-cybercrime and terrorism laws which equate peaceful expression and online activity with “terrorism” to prosecute these individuals. Amnesty International has documented how every stage of the SCC judicial process is tainted by human rights violations.
These individuals were subjected to a range of human rights violations during their detention, including being held incommunicado and in solitary confinement, often for months at a time, and denied access to a lawyer throughout their pre-trial detention. Some of them were also subjected to arbitrary travel bans, in contravention of international human rights law.
The dramatic increase in the length of prison sentences meted out by the SCC follows the appointment of a new judge as President of the court in June 2022. This individual was part of the delegation sent by the Saudi authorities to Istanbul in October 2018 to ALLEGEDLY CLEAN-UP EVIDENCE OF THE ASSASSINATION AND DISMEMBERMENT OF JOURNALIST JAMAL KHASHOGGI AT THE SAUDI CONSULATE, ACCORDING TO THE UN SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON EXTRA-JUDICIAL, SUMMARY OR ARBITRARY EXECUTIONS.
The Saudi authorities must immediately and unconditionally release all those detained for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression.

The crackdown on online expression is only one tool of the Saudi authorities to repress dissent. As of February 2023, Amnesty has documented the cases of 67 individuals who had been prosecuted for exercising their rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, including human rights defenders, peaceful political activists, journalists, poets, clerics and others. Of those, 32 were prosecuted for peacefully expressing their opinions on social media. Amnesty is aware that the real number of such prosecutions is likely much higher.
The organization has reviewed court documents and spoken to Saudi diaspora organizations as well as the families and friends of the 15 individuals given lengthy sentences primarily for expressing themselves on social media.
Infiltration of Twitter
These recent prosecutions coincide with revelations that SAUDI ARABIAN AUTHORITIES HAVE INFILTRATED TWITTER IN ORDER TO COLLECT INFORMATION ON DISSIDENTS.
In December 2022, a US court convicted former Twitter manager Ahmad Abouammo of spying for Saudi Arabia, by “accessing, monitoring and conveying confidential and sensitive information that could be used to identify and locate Twitter users of interest to the Saudi Royal Family.”

According to the indictment, which Amnesty International reviewed, Abouammo provided the names and information of Twitter accounts “POSTING INFORMATION CRITICAL OF, OR EMBARRASSING TO, THE SAUDI ROYAL FAMILY AND GOVERNMENT OF KSA.” Moreover, the indictment states that a Saudi official communicated with Abouammo requesting that an account of a Twitter User who had “POSTED CRITICAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SAUDI ROYAL FAMILY AND SAUDI ROYAL FAMILY MEMBER” be removed and personal information of the account be shared.
