Saudi Arabia marks first Saudi Green Initiative Day ‘Green Dragon’

Saudi Arabia on Wednesday celebrated its first Saudi Green Initiative Day underlining the Kingdom’s commitment to environment protection and sustainability. The Saudi government last week declared March 27 of every year as SGI Day as it coincides with the launch of the Saudi Green Initiative on the same date in 2021 by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
With SGI Day being an annual climate action awareness day, it aims to mobilize and encourage actors to further contribute to a greener future. The initiative has played an important role in accelerating environment protection efforts, transitioning the energy sector, and implementing sustainability programs in various fields. It also unites environmental protection, energy transition and sustainability programs in the Kingdom to improve quality of life by delivering against three targets: Reduce carbon emissions by 2030, grow 10 billion trees in the Kingdom and protect 30 percent of Saudi land and sea by 2030, according to SGI’s website.
“Since the launch of SGI, 80 related initiatives have been embarked upon, with investments exceeding SAR705 billion,” according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). “They explore new opportunities in various green economy sectors, accelerate the green transition journey, and cement the Kingdom’s leadership in implementing the circular carbon economy model.”
