Jamie Dimon and other top bankers visit Saudi Arabia as Israel-Hamas war rages

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, Citigroup’s Jane Fraser and other top names on Wall Street are in Saudi Arabia Tuesday for an investment conference as they try to look beyond risks that the Israel-Hamas war could widen into a regional conflict and deal a new blow to the global economy. Dubbed “Davos in the Desert,” the annual Future Investment Initiative (FII) will welcome about 6,000 (6) participants from more than 90 countries over the next three days. Now in its seventh year, the event has retained its appeal despite US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin warning Sunday about “potential escalation” in the Middle East and possible attacks on American interests.
Since the Hamas assault on October 7, Israel has widened its offensive against the Palestinian militant group and other regional enemies. The Israel Defense Forces have intensified their bombardment of the besieged Gaza Strip, striking Hezbollah cells in Lebanon and targets in the occupied West Bank. Despite the escalating conflict, scores of senior executives stuck with plans to head to Riyadh over the coming days to meet with clients and speak on panels at the FII. Other notable names attending include Blackrock’s (BLK) Larry Fink, Goldman Sachs (GS) CEO David Solomon, HSBC (HSBC) CEO Noel Quinn, billionaire hedge fund founder Ray Dalio and private equity executives Stephen Schwarzman and Harvey Schwartz of Blackstone (BX) and Carlyle (CG) respectively.
But several participants sounded a gloomy note on the global economy during a discussion Tuesday, as conflict threatens to further depress activity already being squeezed by the impact of recent aggressive interest rate hikes. “We’re sitting here with a backdrop of the aftermath of… the terrorist attack in Israel and the events that have been unfolding since and it’s desperately sad. So it’s hard not to be a little pessimistic given that,” said Fraser of Citigroup (C). Fink said that if the wars in Israel and Ukraine are not resolved it will lead to greater fear and insecurity and less hope in society. “When there’s less hope we see contractions in our economies,” he noted.
Saudi Arabia’s sway
But the turnout for the event underscores that investors remain interested in the Middle East, which saw some of the strongest rates of economic growth globally in 2022. There’s another powerful draw card: Saudi Arabia’s enormous sovereign wealth fund. The Public Investment Fund (PIF) has grown in importance as a global investor, particularly as high interest rates and rising geopolitical tensions dampen the appetite for risk taking among institutions in Europe and the United States. People are heading to the conference because “that’s where the money is,” said Karen E. Young, a senior research scholar at Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy. “For many people who are seeking an investment from the PIF, this is the place you have to be,” she told CNN.
The fund has seen its assets under management soar to approximately $700 billion, from $250 billion in 2018, according to Goldman Sachs. Its portfolio of international investments span Uber (UBER), US electric car company Lucid (LCID) and India’s Jio Platforms and Reliance Retail. The PIF was also one of the first — and the biggest — investors in Softbank’s Vision Fund, which has backed dozens of startups since its inception in 2017, including WeWork and Slack.
Money in the Middle East
The fund’s growing clout has helped the Future Investment Initiative weather its fair share of geopolitical storms since launching in 2017. Last year, the event took place amid a very public spat between Riyadh and Washington over oil production cuts orchestrated by Saudi Arabia and its OPEC+ partner Russia. And in 2018, dozens of top business leaders boycotted the conference as questions swirled over the Saudi government’s role in the killing of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammad bin Salman, denied any personal involvement in Khashoggi’s murder but later confirmed it was carried out by Saudi officials.

Bin Salman chairs the Public Investment Fund. He has also been at the center of efforts to normalize relations between the Kingdom and Israel, saying last month that a pact would be “the biggest historical deal since the Cold War.”
Last week, bin Salman urged “all possible efforts to prevent the expansion of violence that will affect the stability of the region,” and stressed the “importance of working to create conditions for the return of stability and the restoration of the path of peace to ensure that the Palestinian people obtain their legitimate rights,” according to the state-run Saudi news agency SPA. Among those not attending the FII this week is Softbank CEO, Masayoshi Son. A spokesperson for the company said this was due to a “family health matter,” without providing further details. “Very few people” had canceled plans to attend the conference, according to Richard Attias, the CEO of the FII Institute, the event’s organizer.
“The Middle East is the new emerging economy, the new emerging hub and people know that,” he said in comments posted to the SPA’s X account. There could be another, more practical reason why people are sticking with the event, according to Young of Columbia University: the price of tickets, which come in at around $15,000 per person, excluding the cost of flights and accommodation. “Firms have invested to come… It is not a small fee,” she said.

Jamie Dimon, the chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, called on Saudi Arabia not to let the war in Gaza derail efforts to establish formal relations with Israel, praising what he described as efforts “to bring peace to the Middle East.” “Please, in spite of what happened in Israel, I urge you all to keep up that effort,” he said at a financial conference in Saudi Arabia. “It is the only way to get there—with some leadership from Saudi Arabia, for all the folks in the Middle East.”

If this war stops Israeli-Saudi normalization, then Iran wins

The most compelling proof of Iran’s direct involvement in this war with Hamas is the timing of the hostilities.

Last month, Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed Ben Salman said, “Every day we get closer” to reaching an agreement with Israel. The alarm bell must have rung for the Iranian Supreme Leader and his henchmen, the terrorist paramilitary organization known as the Islamic Revolutionary GuardCorps. Iran’s well-planned hegemonic ambitions to dominate the Middle East and chase the U.S. from the region will be thwarted if Arabs and Israelis find common ground. Iran needed to start a war before the normalization reached fruition.
There is also ample evidence of Iranian involvement beyond just the timing. According to the State Department, Iran is a leading state sponsor of terror, providing one hundred million dollars a year to support Hamas terrorism through a “global network of crypto, cash and charities,” according to Reuters. Hamas would not have been able to wage this war without Iranian funding.
The Biden administration realized the best path to stabilize the Middle East was to create diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Israel. America’s adversaries, Russia and China, had already joined Iran in an axis of resistance against America. So the logical choice to advance American interests was to create a bulwark of allied nations against Iran.
If Saudi Arabia were to normalize relations with Israel, other Arab and Muslim countries would more likely participate in various forms of American-led rapprochements with the strongest military in the Middle East, Israel, profoundly undermining Iran’s goal for regional dominance. It is still a primary American security imperative to restart the normalization process between Riyadh and Jerusalem, creating a united front against Iran
Earlier this month, President Biden told 60 Minutes that normalization is not dead because it is in the interest of the Arabs. “The Saudis, and the Emiratis, and other Arab nations understand that their security and stability is enhanced if there’s normalization of relations with Israel.”
What must not be forgotten, however, is that Iran remains a bitter rival of Saudi Arabia despite their recent rapprochement, facilitated by China.
Today, the Saudis are on the sidelines, waiting to see the outcome of this war before taking a chance on the U.S. and Israel. In part, this is because their population empathizes with their fellow Arabs, who have been portrayed as victims of the Jewish state. If America wants to get the Saudis on board with normalization eventually, American officials need to make a concerted effort to call out the international media, who provide little context for the images they show, which leaves the viewer with the impression Israel deliberately targets civilians.
I know firsthand from covering four Gaza wars Israel does not target civilians. In 2014, I was with an elite IDF unit that was attacked by Hamas from a United Nations hospital, not responding until a military lawyer was consulted, with final approval from the Defense Minister. The cost of comporting with international law was the lives of three Israeli soldiers.
The message to moderate Arab states should be that this war is against Hamas terrorists who abuse their people, not a war against Palestinian civilians. When electricity was cut from Israel, the Palestinians suffered, but Hamas and its army continued to have light, food, and clean water for themselves. Using Palestinians as human fodder to increase causalities is anti-Palestinian. Is there an Arab leader who can say that publicly without risking his neck?
The Arab nations are privately rooting for Israel to decimate Hamas, as its Muslim Brotherhood Salafist ideology is a genuine threat to the stability of their governments. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, Jordan’s King Hussein, and even the Palestinian Authority president want Israel to end Hamas’ reign and send a message to Iran that they won’t stand for interference with their government or people.
It must be repeated again and again that it is Hamas that commits war crimes, especially by using innocent Palestinians as human shields to protect the sites from which they fire against Israeli civilian areas. When you break the international law of distinction by not wearing uniforms and deliberately blending into the civilian population, you define yourself as a terrorist.
No one should entertain excuses or rationalizations for their barbarity. The Biden administration must lobby our allies and potential allies — the Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia — to present a more balanced picture to their populations. Their media outlets are conduits for their leadership.
Meanwhile, if Iran activates Hezbollah in the north, it will become a defining moment in American history. Hezbollah can overwhelm Israel’s multilayered anti-missile system and strike accurately everywhere in Israel. If the U.S. uses its carrier strike groups to help Israel devastate Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria, it will send a clear message to the Saudis, Jordanians, Emiratis, Egyptians, and others, that normalization with Israel, America’s best friend in the region, makes strategic sense.
President Biden’s visit to Israel and American bipartisan support in Congress also powerfully conveys to the world that America stands with its allies. Taiwan is listening and is hopeful.
If Iran is diminished, her allies will be chastened, and the region might become more stable. If this scenario unfolds, American national security will be strengthened, and the likelihood of another round of violence in the region will be reduced for years.
That is all one can hope for in the Middle East: a strong Israel a respected America, and both coinciding with Saudi interests.

Ten ‘10’ Denotes God’s divine ‘COMPLETENESS’ as to things on EARTH. In Revelation 10, he is opening up the ancient scrolls and ‘little book’ of prophecy that Daniel was told to ‘SEAL UP’ and not write of what was spoken. (NWN; Seven ‘7’ denotes God’s divine completion to his plan or purpose for this ‘7th’ prophecy angel to commence and complete prophecy related to the Last Days and End Times. Think of the Great Prophecy Angel as a ‘General’ and the ‘7th’ prophecy angel as a Major or Colonel or someone of rank who has been given authority to physically ‘begin something or start something.’)
8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open (NWN; notice that the ‘little book’ is OPEN) in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth.
(NWN; the prophecy angel(s) are HANDING the little book to physically alive men on the earth. In essence, they are handing or ‘transferring’ the ‘little book of prophecy’ to physical men ALIVE on the EARTH during the ‘End Times’ or ‘Last Days.’ God conveys prophecy to Angels who in turn are ‘messengers’ of God’s prophecy to mortal men alive. Angels, throughout the past 6,000 years have been ‘messengers’ for God to mankind.)
9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.
(NWN; this is a ‘discernment’ on my part. ‘Take it and eat it’ is a spiritual ‘consumption’ of understanding the End Times and God’s related prophecies to go along with ‘signs of the times.’ It takes ‘7’ knowledge, wisdom, obedience, humility, persistence, prayer and the Holy Spirit’ to work prophecy in man’kind. This is a great and wonderful thing, just like a ‘7’ course meal. However, once the prophecies are apparent ‘consumed and understood’ they will be prone to make one sick to the stomach because of what they foretell. Just like eating a ’7’ course meal will likely make you feel like you could explode. God’s UNFILTERD WRATH poured on evil man’kind who refuse Him, and refuse His Son Jesus Christ and His eternal offer of salvation. Seeing prophecy happen and unfold is a wonderful and miraculous thing. Understanding the implications of seeing prophecy unfold, leaves one’s stomach bitter and sour because of the ‘gastrointestinal storm’ that is coming. Pass-the-antacid-pills, please.)

(NWN; the prophecy angel was prophesying what would happen to anyone who attempted to reveal what was in the ‘little book.’ This verse ‘confirms’ that what was prophesied, did in fact occur and was experienced by those given the task of being Watchmen. This also ‘suggests’ that some men are ‘willingly’ allowing themselves to be Watchmen because they consciously love prophecy (God’s Word) and are completely open and receptive to it.)
11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.
(NWN; since this is verse ‘11’ it suggests a WARNING(S). The purpose of prophecy is to inform, proclaim and WARN. It suggests that the Watchmen who proclaim the Word of God, will have their ‘7’ words, letters, videos, blogs, sermons, articles and books proclaim God’s WILL to those during the End Times / Last Days and Tribulation period. God has ALWAYS used Holy Angels and physical men (Moses, Elijah, Daniel, Enoch, and others) to speak on behalf of God. He will do this also through the Tribulation via; 1. Prophecy revealed to mankind via his ‘little book’ to Watchmen, 2. The ‘two witnesses’, ‘lampstands’ or candles who proclaims God’s light to the world for the first 3.5 years of the tribulation, 3. The various Angel warnings given to men to NOT TAKE THE MARK of the BEAST and lastly, 4. The 144,000 Jewish Evangelists who have the ‘seal of God’ in their foreheads (and NOT the mark of the Beast) who proclaim Jesus Christ’s offer of Salvation ONE LAST TIME, before the 7 year tribulation ends.)
But how can (7) they call on him (Jesus Christ) to save (7) them unless they believe in Him (Jesus Christ)? (7) And how can they believe in Him (7) (Jesus Christ) if they have never heard about (7) Him (Jesus Christ)? And how can they hear (7) about Him (Jesus Christ) unless someone tells them?” Romans 10:14 (777777)
