RIYADH: Leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council on Sunday called for an end to Israeli war crimes in Gaza, the displacement of the region’s population, and the ISRAELI OCCUPATION OF PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES.

The leaders stressed their firm support during a meeting in Kuwait for the PALESTINIAN CAUSE AND ITS SOVEREIGNTY OVER ALL PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES OCCUPIED SINCE JUNE 1967, AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN INDEPENDENT PALESTINIAN STATE WITH EAST JERUSALEM AS ITS CAPITAL.

The “Kuwait Declaration,” which was issued at the 45th session of the Supreme Council of the GCC, praised the growing role of Gulf countries in addressing regional and GLOBAL POLITICAL, SECURITY, AND ECONOMIC CHALLENGES.

It also praised their contribution to resolving issues that threatened PEACE, SECURITY, AND STABILITY, and for enhancing international dialogue and communication between countries.

A statement said: “The Supreme Council called for an end to the killings and collective punishment in Gaza, the displacement of the population, and the destruction of civilian facilities and infrastructure, including health facilities, schools, and places of worship, in clear violation of international law and international humanitarian law.”

GCC leaders also welcomed the RESOLUTIONS OF THE EXTRAORDINARY ARAB AND ISLAMIC SUMMIT HOSTED BY SAUDI ARABIA IN NOVEMBER TO ENHANCE INTERNATIONAL ACTION TO STOP THE WAR ON GAZA; ACHIEVE PERMANENT AND COMPREHENSIVE PEACE; IMPLEMENT THE TWO-STATE SOLUTION IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ARAB PEACE INITIATIVE; MOBILIZE SUPPORT FOR RECOGNIZING THE STATE OF PALESTINE; AND LEAD THE INTERNATIONAL COALITION TO IMPLEMENT THE TWO-STATE SOLUTION.

A REPLICA OF THE ARK OF THE COVENANT, PAINSTAKINGLY CONSTRUCTED, ITS CREATORS SAY, TO THE TORAH SPECIFICATIONS OF THE SACRED VESSEL THAT WAS THE FIRST TEMPLE’S CENTRAL FIXTURE, WAS DISPLAYED IN JERUSALEM ON SUNDAY EVENING, during the intermediate days of the Sukkot holiday.

THE ARK DESCRIBED IN THE TORAH, WHICH HOUSED THE TEN COMMANDMENTS TABLETS AMONG OTHER HOLY OBJECTS, WAS HIDDEN AFTER THE DESTRUCTION OF THE FIRST TEMPLE, PER RABBINIC TRADITION.

At Jerusalem’s King David Hotel, the replica shown in the hotel’s sukkah contained a refurbished Torah scroll, which survived the Holocaust, from Thessaloniki, Greece.

Several members of the Knesset and Israeli activists were on hand at the hotel for an event and festive meal—a stop on the replica’s journey retracing the steps of the biblical prototype.

Earlier in the day, it was fitted with the Greek Torah at Jerusalem’s City of David. It was later displayed—with some difficulty and via a Schweppes pallet jack—on a rooftop overlooking the WESTERN WALL PLAZA AND TEMPLE MOUNT.

The replica ark is slated to stop in Jericho, the first Israeli city inhabited by Jews after the biblical Exodus from Egypt, and in Shiloh, the site that served as the Jewish capital for 369 years after Jews settled in Israel and THE LOCATION OF THE TABERNACLE PRIOR TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIRST TEMPLE.

‘PROCESS OF DISCOVERY, MYSTERY’

It took 17 volunteers, who live in several countries, three-and-a-half years to build the replica ark, which is made out of donated gold and some three tons of Egyptian Acacia, according to Jake, the project’s chief architect, and Lewis Topper, its principal financier. (Both are based in New York.)

Although the Torah delves into extensive detail about the construction of the Ark and its dimensions and materials, it leaves out a lot of critical information that a builder would need to create the sacred vessel.

“It was really a deep process of discovery and a mystery. It’s not a question of just reading the descriptions literally and building the device,” Jake said at the event. “You have to do some heavy research, you have to immerse yourself and you have to go on a journey.”

“BUILDING THE ARK IS THE ULTIMATE JOURNEY,” HE ADDED. “IT’S THE ULTIMATE PILGRIMAGE TO DISCOVER GOD AND DISCOVER THE JEWISH PEOPLE, AND THAT PILGRIMAGE WAS BOTH HORRIFYING AND VERY SATISFYING.” EACH STEP RAISED NEW QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW SUCH A COMPLEX OBJECT WAS CONSTRUCTED PRIOR TO THE ADVENT OF MODERN MANUFACTURING.

“We went with the highest purity of gold available to the Egyptians,” Jake said at the event. “The purity used for royal artifacts is around 23.75 carats, so we went with 23.75.”

The volunteers also drew on a “tremendous amount of math” to build the ark, according to the project’s chief architect.

“A lot of the concepts or motifs that we used follow up either Kabbalistic or some other concept by way of numerology,” Jake said. “THE MATH PARALLELS THE ONES FOUND BOTH IN THE TABERNACLE AND THE FIRST TEMPLE. THEY USED THE SAME KIND OF NUMEROLOGY.”

HE ADDED THAT THE GOLDEN RATIO—A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VALUES THAT HAS BEEN SEEN AS BEAUTIFUL SINCE ANCIENT TIMES AND WHICH APPEARS IN NATURE, AS IN NAUTILUS SHELLS—PLAYED A “VERY IMPORTANT PART IN THE DESIGN.” “THAT’S ONE REASON WHY THE ART IS SO AESTHETICALLY APPEALING,” JAKE SAID.

DESIGNING A FUNCTIONAL REPLICA

Illustrations of four biblical stages of the Exodus from Egypt are displayed on the exterior of the ark replica: MOSES’S PROPHECY AT THE BURNING BUSH, THE PARTING OF THE RED SEA, THE CLOUDS AND PILLAR OF FIRE THAT PROTECTED AND GUIDED THE JEWS IN THE DESERT AND THE GIVING OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS AT MOUNT SINAI.

“The ark by itself is a book,” Jake said at the event. “IT’S A BOOK THAT TELLS THE STORY OF THE EXODUS. IT’S THE ULTIMATE MANIFESTATION AND ILLUSTRATION OF OUR EXODUS AND OUR RELATIONSHIP TO GOD.”

The project architect told attendees that the replica had to be both beautiful and functional. “The ark weighs around 85 pounds, so it is pretty heavy,” he said. “It has to sustain the load for extended periods of time.”

The replica of the sacred Temple object also “is exposed to a high degree of torsion—the twisting of the structure, because it’s carried by four individuals.” Due to that twisting force, “if the joint is not strong enough, you’ll eventually break it apart,” he said.

To construct a replica that withstands the tests of time, the volunteers who worked on the project studied arks that were constructed in ancient Egypt. “The Egyptians were prolific ark builders,” Jake said. “They had many, many types of arks that they constructed during that period.”

Following the group’s initial research, the volunteers built a full-size, low-cost, “proof of concept” plywood model before building the golden replica. “We took it for walks,” Jake said. “We figured out what the joints should be and how the mechanical connection should work.”

Since Egyptians didn’t know what mechanical fasteners were, THE ARK REPLICA HAS NO SCREWS OR NAILS.

“We had to come up with really creative ways to solve the mechanical fastening,” Jake said. “It may look trivial to actually build a wooden joint, but the Egyptians used very specific techniques when they created the wooden joints.” They also used a fastening technique called mortise and tenon “that can practically last forever,” Jake said. “We had to analyze a lot of those.”

DIVINE ‘COMMUNICATION DEVICE’

The crown jewel atop the golden box, which required painstaking detail, is the PAIR OF MALE AND FEMALE CHERUBS—winged angels with child-like features that face each other.

“It’s very difficult to hammer gold to a high degree of precision, so a lot of the techniques have to be invented and discovered,” Jake said. “SCRIPTURE TELLS US THAT GOD SPOKE TO MOSES IN BETWEEN THE CHERUBS,” he said. “THE PURPOSE OF THE ARK WAS TO HAVE A COMMUNICATION CHANNEL BETWEEN MOSES AND GOD, SO IT’S THE COMMUNICATION DEVICE. IT CERTAINLY WASN’T AN ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION DEVICE.”

IT WAS ALSO A SACRED OBJECT WITH MILITARY IMPLICATIONS.

In Biblical times prior to the Temple, there were likely two Arks—one housing the Ten Commandments that was always in the Tabernacle—and the other which led the Jewish army in battle—according to Jake.

“THE ARK OF THE COVENANT WAS THE WEAPON THAT WAS TAKEN INTO WAR,” he said.

Several attendees said that it was meaningful that the ark replica was built and brought to Jerusalem amid ISRAEL’S SEVEN-FRONT WAR against Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and all of the latter’s other terror proxies. “There is a very deep connection, believe it or not, between the Philistines and the Ark,” said Simcha Rothman, a member of Knesset and chair of its Constitution, Law and Justice Committee. Rothman noted that when the Jews misused the Ark in the Bible, it was taken away from them and held temporarily by the Philistines before it reverted to its rightful owners.

“People thought that the Ark by itself wins the wars. The Ark by itself does not win the war,” Rothman said. “THE ARK BY ITSELF REPRESENTS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND HASHEM, AND THIS IS WHAT WINS THE WARS.”

Ohad Tal, another Knesset member, discussed the symbolism of the replica ark’s delivery in wartime. “How can we know if we are actually winning this war or not?” he said. “The first stage is first of all to understand what we are fighting about.” When Hamas terrorists penetrated Israeli villages and kibbutzim on Oct. 7, 2023 and murdered and raped civilians, THEY SHOUTED, IN ARABIC, THAT “ALLAH IS GREAT,” ACCORDING TO TAL, “AS IF THEY ARE FIGHTING FOR GOD.”

The terrorists called the war, which they launched, “AL AQSA JERUSALEM FLOOD.”

“They didn’t do that in order to expand their backyard or to improve their education system,” Tal said. “No. THEY DID THAT FOR JERUSALEM, FOR THE TEMPLE MOUNT. THEY WANTED TO PREVENT THE UNITY THAT THIS ARK REPRESENTS.”

The Jewish people “are fighting not just against Hamas, not just to bring back security to Gaza or to the northern border in Lebanon or against Iran,” Tal added. “WE ARE FIGHTING TO BRING BACK TO THE WORLD THE UNITY THAT THE ARK, THE TEMPLE AND JERUSALEM REPRESENT.”

Jake told attendees that the replica ark might be providing some symbolic military assistance already. “We brought it to Israel to get it reattached to all of the places it was before. We actually visited Shiloh,” he said. “The funny thing is that as soon as we took the ark and assembled it in Shiloh, where the Tabernacle used to stay, I think within a few minutes, Sinwar was taken out.”

The project architect noted that he and his colleagues claim no credit for the Israeli military killing Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, “but the symbolism, the irony is actually pretty funny.” Jake hopes the replica ark can be used more formally in the current war.

“We would like to bring it to a number of military camps,” he told attendees. “The original idea was to actually bring it physically into Gaza, but we are running into some administrative challenges.”

‘PEACE AND KINDNESS’

Topper, a businessman and philanthropist who lives in New York and Florida and who funded the project, told attendees that the replica ark is “a passionate task that was performed that encountered construction, engineering and architectural difficulties every step of the way.”

“WHEN YOU’RE DOING SOMETHING GOOD AND YOU’RE FINDING THAT YOU’RE MAKING PROGRESS IN AN UNEXPECTED WAY, YOU ALMOST KNOW THAT YOU’RE OPERATING IN LINE WITH THE GOODNESS AND THE ESSENCE OF THE CREATOR,” HE SAID. “THAT’S WHAT THIS PROJECT IS, AND I AM THRILLED TO BE ABLE TO BE A FACILITATOR.”

“IT WAS A PROJECT DESIGNED TO BRING PEACE TO THE WORLD AND TO BRING VICTORY TO THE LAND OF ISRAEL, AND TO BRING PEACE AND KINDNESS TO AMERICA AGAIN,” he said. “THE PROJECT WAS SO DEARLY RECEIVED BY HASHEM THAT HE PERSONALLY GREASED THE WHEELS OF EVERY OBSTACLE THAT WE CAME ACROSS.”

The rewards of THE THREE-AND-A-HALF YEAR journey were amplified for Topper when the replica ark arrived in Jerusalem. “When we finally got the Torah delivered to us, it was this morning and it was at the City of David,” he said. “When that Torah was put in, this ark became weaponized.”

Topper anticipates that the project will yield major benefits.

“THERE IS GOING TO BE A FORCE THAT IS ABSOLUTELY SO POWERFUL THAT IT’S GOING TO BE SOMETHING THAT WE’VE SEEN IN THE MOVIES—BUT FOR GOOD,” he said.

Lt. Col. (res.) Mordechai Kedar, a research fellow at the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University, told attendees that the Ark is a concept in other faith traditions, including Islam. “The Ark is mentioned in the Quran in the second chapter,” the scholar, who is one of Israel’s leading cultural experts, told attendees.

“MUSLIM TRADITION EVEN SUGGESTS THAT THE ARK WAS LAID BENEATH THE KAABA IN MECCA, though no Jewish scholars hold such a view.”

The symbolism of an ark replica approximating the return of the Ark to Judaism is significant, according to Kedar.

“NOW WE CAN SEE WITH OUR OWN EYES SOMETHING WHICH WE HAVE MISSED FOR 2,000 YEARS,” he said. “We have never seen such things. We heard about them. We learned about them. We see pictures, but we have never seen them in real life.” “It is very important for us to see how these really were, to touch things, to see them, to measure them, to stand near them. We haven’t done so for 2,000 years,” he added. “We can see, we feel, we can touch and we can take pictures with them.”

ARK-ETYPAL MAILING ADDRESS

It wasn’t clear if the replica ark will remain in Jerusalem long term or return to the United States, where it was mainly constructed, to tour and inspire individuals. The replica has already visited Mar-a-Lago, the Palm Beach, Fla. home of former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee.

Completion of the project and the replica’s delivery to Jerusalem has special significance to Jake. “WHAT THE ARK REPRESENTS IS THE FACT THAT THE COVENANT IS STILL VALID. IT WAS NEVER ABROGATED, AND THE COVENANT IS STILL STRONG,” HE TOLD ATTENDEES. “GOD’S COMMITMENT TO HIS PEOPLE IS AS STRONG AS IT WAS 3,500 YEARS AGO WHEN THE ARK WAS BUILT.”

“It should be the weapon that walks in front of the army,” he said. “We truly believe that it should be both a weapon and inspirational too.” The project, he said, was among the most difficult and demanding upon which he has ever worked. “It’s drained a lot of my psyche working on it and it’s put tremendous stress on everybody,” he said. “The end result, I think, it speaks for itself.”

Donald Trump’s choice as the next United States defence secretary has CALLED FOR THE BUILDING OF A THIRD JEWISH TEMPLE ON THE SITE OF AL-AQSA MOSQUE IN JERUSALEM. Pete Hegseth, a former TV show host, was picked by the incoming US President Trump for the role following his election victory earlier this month.

Hegseth has previously touted his avowedly pro-Israel credentials, which derive in part from his fundamentalist Christian beliefs.

Speaking at an event in Jerusalem in 2018 he said there was “NO REASON WHY THE MIRACLE OF RE-ESTABLISHING THE TEMPLE ON THE TEMPLE MOUNT ISN’T POSSIBLE”, USING THE ISRAELI NAME FOR THE RAISED PLATEAU IN OCCUPIED EAST JERUSALEM WHERE AL-AQSA MOSQUE STANDS.

“I don’t how it would happen, you don’t know how it would happen, but I know that it could happen – and a step in that process is the recognition that facts and activities on the ground truly matter,” he said at the event, which took place at Jerusalem’s King David Hotel.

He also told attendees that Israel should take advantage of Trump being in office to do what they needed to do in the region, because there were “true believers” in Washington who would back them.

FOR RELIGIOUS JEWS, THE TEMPLE MOUNT IS THE HOLIEST SITE IN JUDAISM. IT IS BELIEVED TO BE THE SITE OF TWO TEMPLES THAT WERE ONCE THE CENTRE OF THE JEWISH KINGDOMS THAT EXISTED IN ANCIENT TIMES, ACCORDING TO BOTH SCRIPTURE AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES.

The only remaining part of the Second Temple – begun by Herod the Great and destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE in retaliation for a Jewish rebellion – is the Western Wall, which is the holiest site for Jewish prayer in the city.

ATOP THE HILL IS THE VAST AL-AQSA MOSQUE, A COMPLEX OF COURTYARDS, PRAYER HALLS AND SHRINES, INCLUDING THE GOLDEN-ROOFED DOME OF THE ROCK. THE MOSQUE IS ONE OF THE HOLIEST SITES IN ISLAM.

Restrictions on non-Muslims entering the mosque have been in place since the Ottoman status quo designating Jerusalem’s holy sites to its sects was established in 1757.  The Chief Rabbinate of Jerusalem has also, since 1921, officially banned Jews from entering the Temple Mount.

However in recent years far-right Jewish activists have regularly stormed the mosque complex accompanied by ministers in the government, and Palestinians’ access to the mosque and courtyards has been routinely restricted by Israeli security forces.

FAR-RIGHT JEWISH ACTIVISTS WANT TO BUILD A THIRD JEWISH TEMPLE ON THE SITE WHERE AL-AQSA MOSQUES STRUCTURES AND COURTYARDS STAND TODAY.

Some, including CHRISTIAN EVANGELICALS, BELIEVE THIS WILL HERALD THE ARRIVAL OF THE MESSIAH AND POSSIBLY EVEN THE END OF THE WORLD.

ISRAELIS TEND RED COWS AND PLAN THE THIRD TEMPLE

Radical plans to slaughter the heifers have raised concern across the Arab world – and were even linked by Hamas to the 7 October attack

According to Jewish tradition, THE ASHES OF A PERFECTLY RED HEIFER COW ARE NEEDED FOR THE RITUAL PURIFICATION THAT WOULD ALLOW A THIRD TEMPLE TO BE BUILT IN JERUSALEM.

THAT TEMPLE, SAY RADICAL JEWISH GROUPS, MUST BE CONSTRUCTED ON THE RAISED PLATEAU IN JERUSALEM’S OLD CITY KNOWN AS THE TEMPLE MOUNT, WHERE AL-AQSA MOSQUE AND THE DOME OF THE ROCK SHRINE STAND TODAY. SOME BELIEVE THIS WILL HERALD THE ARRIVAL OF THE MESSIAH.

On Wednesday, a few dozen Israelis gathered at a conference on the outskirts of Shilo, an illegal Israeli settlement near the Palestinian city of Nablus, to discuss the religious importance and imperative of the cows, and catch a glimpse of them too.

“THIS IS A NEW MOMENT FOR JEWISH HISTORY,” Chaim, a 38-year-old Israeli settler, told Middle East Eye as he prepared to take his seat.

FOR YEARS, MEMBERS OF THE THIRD TEMPLE COMMUNITY, LED BY THE JERUSALEM-BASED TEMPLE INSTITUTE, WHICH ORGANISED THE CONFERENCE, HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR A RED HEIFER THAT FITS THE DESCRIPTION OF THOSE USED FOR PURIFICATION IN THE TORAH.

PERFECT COWS MUST NOT HAVE A SINGLE BLEMISH, NOT A STRAY WHITE OR BLACK HAIR. THEY CAN NEVER BE PLACED UNDER A YOKE OR PUT TO WORK.

“These cows were brought all the way from Texas and were reared in special conditions to maintain their purity,” said Yahuda Singer, a 71-year-old from the Mitzpe Yericho settlement and the translator of a pamphlet on red heifers.

“The cows can’t even have someone lean on them,” said Singer’s wife Edna, 69. “You can make them impure by just placing your jacket on their back.”

THE PERFECT COW HASN’T BEEN SEEN FOR 2,000 YEARS. NOT SINCE THE ROMANS DESTROYED THE SECOND JEWISH TEMPLE – WHICH IS BELIEVED TO HAVE STOOD AT THE TOP OF THE TEMPLE MOUNT – IN AD 70 HAS THE PERFECT RED HEIFER BEEN GLIMPSED.

So some Jewish activists, alongside US EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS WHO BELIEVE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE THIRD TEMPLE WILL PROMPT THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS AND ARMAGEDDON, DECIDED TO BREED THEIR OWN.

In 2022, five of these promising young cows, blessed with glossy ochre hides, arrived in Israel from a Texas ranch with much fanfare. Now you can find them in an archaeological park, separated from biblical ruins and flowering rosemary bushes by a high steel pen.

‘Hezbollah found out about this event’

In many ways, the red heifer conference was like any other. Rabbis and religious scholars delved into the details of the Torah. A couple of people in the crowd gently nodded off under the dimmed lights. In other ways, it was unique. The first two speakers stood at the lectern with assault rifles slung around their shoulders.

“Hezbollah found out about this event and have been talking about it on Telegram,” Kobi Mamo, head of the ancient Shiloh archaeological site, said in his opening remarks.

MEE was unable to unearth any of this kind of talk from the Lebanese armed movement, which fired a barrage of rockets into northern Israel earlier that day, but the conference nonetheless attracted a lot of attention on Arabic social media.

One person in Libya joked that the red heifer found on the front of packets of Laughing Cow revealed that the spreadable cheese triangles are a Zionist conspiracy. “Have you ever asked yourself why the laughing cow is red!!??” he asked.

OTHERS MORE SERIOUSLY SUGGESTED THAT THERE WERE PLANS TO IMMINENTLY SLAUGHTER A HEIFER ON JERUSALEM’S MOUNT OF OLIVES, WHERE LAND WAS BOUGHT UP BY THIRD TEMPLE ACTIVISTS FOR THIS PURPOSE.

Rabbi Yitzchak Mamo, from the Third Temple group Uvne Jerusalem, previously told the Christian Broadcasting Network that a ceremony was planned for Passover this year, which comes in late April.

Hamas, the Palestinian movement fighting Israel in Gaza, has raised concerns about the cattle.

In November, a senior Palestinian source in contact with Hamas’ leadership told MEE that the group had been closely monitoring efforts to secure a permanent Jewish presence in Al-Aqsa Mosque.

“THE ONLY THING LEFT IS THE SLAUGHTERING OF THE RED HEIFERS, WHICH THEY IMPORTED FROM THE US. IF THEY DID THAT, IT’S THE SIGNAL TO REBUILD THE THIRD TEMPLE,” said the source.

In January, Abu Obaida, spokesperson for Hamas’ military wing, made a speech marking 100 days since the group’s 7 October attack on Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip. In it, he made a direct link between Hamas’ decision to attack Israel and Third Temple activists importing the cattle, which he said was an “aggression against the feelings of an entire nation”.

‘All we want is a small altar’

Yaakov, a 19-year-old yeshiva student from Los Angeles who wished to be identified only by his first name, came to Shilo for the chance to see the cows for himself. “I’VE HEARD ABOUT RED HEIFERS AND THE FIRST AND SECOND TEMPLE ALL MY LIFE, so I’m really excited about the opportunity to see one today,” he told MEE.

Yaakov understands that the prospect of building a Third Temple on the site of Al-Aqsa is controversial, “but I don’t think it should be”. “There was once a church there, then a mosque. It was originally a Jewish temple, so it should be again,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be violent.”

Boruch Fishman, a longstanding member of the Third Temple movement, told MEE there is a long way to go between slaughtering a red heifer and building a Third Temple.  

He has identified 13 problems that need to be solved before construction can begin – including getting Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, to legalise such a plan. “That’s where I can help on the political side,” he said. Since Israel conquered and occupied East Jerusalem in 1967, the Israeli government has maintained strict Ottoman-era restrictions over Jewish prayer and presence in Al-Aqsa Mosque’s courtyards.

Entry to Al-Aqsa has also been banned by the Chief Rabbinate of Jerusalem since 1921, with an edict ruling that JEWS ARE FORBIDDEN TO ENTER THE SITE UNLESS “RITUALLY CLEAN”, WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE WITHOUT THE ASHES OF A RED HEIFER.

Yet as Israeli politics and society has shifted towards the religious right, allowances have been made for some Jewish Israelis – almost always settlers – to regularly visit the site under armed guard.

THE THIRD TEMPLE COMMUNITY HOPE THE SLAUGHTER OF SHILO’S RED COWS WILL ALLOW JEWISH PEOPLE TO BE PURIFIED SO THEY CAN PERFORM RITES AND WORSHIP in the mosque’s courtyards. Research by a professor at Bar Ilan University estimated that the ashes of one cow could be made into enough cleansing water for 660 billion purifications.

“One of the main issues is the Waqf,” says Fishman, referencing the Jordanian-run Islamic endowment that manages Al-Aqsa. “The Waqf gets a lot of money from Jordan and I don’t think they want to give that up.”

According to Fishman, small steps need to be taken to secure a Jewish presence on the Temple Mount. “The Muslim community is hurting a lot right now, and we need to be sensitive,” he said. “All we want is a small altar.”

Some Third Temple activists and rabbis have previously sought to perform ritual sacrifices in Al-Aqsa’s courtyards at Passover, only to be turned away by Israeli soldiers.

“Perhaps the Waqf could be persuaded to help collect offerings and raise money that way,” Fishman said.

“Of course, not everyone could come with something to sacrifice, it would be a bloodbath. But I believe there is a difference between what the Waqf says in public and private, and it could be convinced.”

In response, Waqf spokesperson Firas al-Debs told MEE: “Let them say whatever they want in their conferences. The Waqf always emphasises in its statements its decisive opinion that Al-Aqsa Mosque is for Muslims only and that it doesn’t accept partnership or division.

“There is no value in what is discussed in these conferences as long as they are not official,” he added.

IN-DEPTH: WHY A FUTURE SEVEN YEAR TRIBULATION IS A BIBLICAL NECESSITY

The Bible tells us THERE MUST BE A SEVEN-YEAR PERIOD WHEN GOD AGAIN TURNS HIS ATTENTION TO THE JEWISH PEOPLE AND JERUSALEM. The length of this still future time comes the prophet Daniel who specified SEVENTY WEEKS OF YEARS during which time the Lord will complete His redemptive purposes for choosing Israel (Daniel 9:24-27).

Why am I so confident that the last week of Daniel’s prophecy awaits a future fulfillment? It’s because the events that mark its beginning and midpoint have never happened in human history.

Daniel 9:27 KJV – “And HE SHALL CONFIRM THE COVENANT WITH MANY FOR ONE WEEK: and IN THE MIDST OF THE WEEK HE SHALL CAUSE THE SACRIFICE AND THE OBLATION TO CEASE, AND FOR THE OVERSPREADING OF ABOMINATIONS HE SHALL MAKE IT DESOLATE, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”

This LAST SEVEN-YEAR PERIOD will begin with a “prince” (9:26) establishing a SEVEN-YEAR PEACE AGREEMENT WITH ISRAEL. PERHAPS THE MOST NOTABLE ASPECT OF DANIEL’S PROPHECY REGARDING THE SEVENTIETH WEEK IS THE ENDING OF TEMPLE SACRIFICES, WHICH THE PROPHET LATER REFERS TO AS THE “ABOMINATION THAT MAKES DESOLATE” (DANIEL 12:11).

Does it make sense that there’s a long gap between the sixty-ninth AND SEVENTIETH WEEK OF DANIEL’S PROPHECY? Yes, the text itself tells us that that last week would not immediately follow the cutting off of the Messiah.

Daniel 9:25-26 KJV – “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be SEVEN WEEKS, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and THE PEOPLE OF THE PRINCE THAT SHALL COME SHALL DESTROY THE CITY AND THE SANCTUARY; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.”

Bible scholars have calculated that the sixty-ninth week ends exactly on the very day Jesus rode into Jerusalem just days before His crucifixion. This fulfilled the prophet’s words that after the next to last “week,” the Messiah would “cut off, but not for himself.” Please note that Daniel placed the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple during the interlude between the final weeks. This necessitates a gap of at least forty years before the start of the seventieth week, which we read about in Daniel 9:27.

JESUS (7) PLACED DANIEL’S LAST WEEK IN THE FUTURE

Four centuries after the time of Daniel, Antiochus Epiphanes came to power and subsequently desecrated the second Jewish temple by setting up idols in it and offering pigs on its altar. Although the actions of Antiochus Epiphanes foreshadowed the words of Daniel 9:27, they didn’t fulfill the prophecy. First, Antiochus defiled the temple during the first sixty-nine weeks rather than during the last seven-year period of years in Daniel’s prophecy (9:24-27). That alone disqualifies his actions from contention.

Second, two centuries later, JESUS REFERRED TO DANIEL PROPHECY OF THE TEMPLE’S DESECRATION AS A STILL FUTURE EVENT: Matthew 24:15 KJV – “WHEN YE THEREFORE SHALL SEE THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION, SPOKEN OF BY DANIEL THE PROPHET, STAND IN THE HOLY PLACE, (WHOSO READETH, LET HIM UNDERSTAND:)”

As He answered His disciples’ questions pertaining to the end of the age, the Lord referred to the key event of DANIEL’S SEVENTIETH WEEK AS A LITERAL AND STILL FUTURE EVENT AND ONE THAT WOULD SIGNAL THE NEARNESS OF HIS SECOND COMING.

DANIEL TELLS US THAT THE COMING “PRINCE” WOULD DEFILE THE TEMPLE, NOT DESTROY IT. The key detail that Paul adds to the fulfillment of Daniel 9:27 and Matthew 24:15.

THE LORD HIMSELF WILL DESTROY THE DESOLATOR

In 2 Thessalonians 2, PAUL IDENTIFIES THE ONE WHO WILL DESECRATE THE TEMPLE AS THE “MAN OF LAWLESSNESS,” THE ONE WE REFER TO TODAY AS THE “ANTICHRIST.”

CHRISTIAN APOSTASY AND REVEALING THE MAN BY SATAN (MBS)

The apostle reveals that THE COMING DESOLATOR WILL BLASPHEME THE LORD, SIT IN THE “TEMPLE OF GOD,” AND “PROCLAIM HIMSELF TO BE GOD.” Then Paul adds one critical detail about THE ONE WHO WILL COMMIT DANIEL’S “ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION” AT THE MIDPOINT OF DANIEL’S SEVENTIETH WEEK:

2 Thessalonians 2:8 KJV – “AND THEN SHALL THAT WICKED BE REVEALED, WHOM THE LORD SHALL CONSUME WITH THE SPIRIT OF HIS MOUTH, AND SHALL DESTROY WITH THE BRIGHTNESS OF HIS COMING:”

AT HIS RETURN TO EARTH, JESUS HIMSELF WILL DESTROY THE “MAN OF LAWLESSNESS” WHOM THE APOSTLE HAD JUST IDENTIFIED AS THE ONE WHO WOULD DESECRATE OF THE TEMPLE AND THUS FULFILL THE WORDS OF DANIEL 9:27.

THIS GAP FOR THE LAST HALF OF THE SEVENTIETH WEEK PERFECTLY COINCIDES WITH THE TIME OF THE “GREAT TRIBULATION” THAT JESUS SAID WOULD HAPPEN BETWEEN IT AND THE SECOND COMING (MATTHEW 24:15-31).

Second, the Lord Himself would’ve killed Titus at His return in AD 73-74. However,

THE APOSTLE JOHN PLACED THE DESOLATOR’S DEMISE AT JESUS’ RETURN

In Revelation 13:6, John tells us that THE COMING BEAST, WHOM WE TODAY IDENTIFY AS THE ANTICHRIST, WILL OPEN “ITS MOUTH TO UTTER BLASPHEMIES AGAINST GOD, BLASPHEMING HIS NAME AND HIS DWELLING.” THIS IS THE GUY OF DANIEL’S PROPHECY (9:27 AND 11:36) AS WELL AS THE ONE JESUS REFERRED TO MATTHEW 24:15. HE IS THE “MAN OF LAWLESSNESS” OF 2 THESSALONIANS 2.

In Revelation 19:19-20, John provides AN EYEWITNESS OF THE FUTURE DESTRUCTION OF THIS FUTURE BEAST THAT WILL DESECRATE THE JEWISH TEMPLE:

Revelation 19:19-20 KJV – “AND I SAW THE BEAST, AND THE KINGS OF THE EARTH, AND THEIR ARMIES, GATHERED TOGETHER TO MAKE WAR AGAINST HIM THAT SAT ON THE HORSE, AND AGAINST HIS ARMY. AND THE BEAST WAS TAKEN, AND WITH HIM THE FALSE PROPHET THAT WROUGHT MIRACLES BEFORE HIM, WITH WHICH HE DECEIVED THEM THAT HAD RECEIVED THE MARK OF THE BEAST, AND THEM THAT WORSHIPPED HIS IMAGE. THESE BOTH WERE CAST ALIVE INTO A LAKE OF FIRE BURNING WITH BRIMSTONE.”

Just as the Apostle Paul prophesied in 2 Thessalonians 2:8, JESUS HIMSELF WILL DESTROY THE “DESOLATOR” OF DANIEL 9:27 AT HIS SECOND COMING. HE WILL CAST HIM INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE. NO ONE HAS EVER FULFILLED ALL THAT WE KNOW ABOUT DANIEL’S “ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION” FROM MATTHEW 24:15 AND 2 THESSALONIANS 2:3-8.

The Witness of Irenaeus (AD 130-202)

In Against Heresies, book 5, chapter 30, section 4, Irenaeus wrote these words:

BUT WHEN THE ANTICHRIST SHALL HAVE DEVASTATED ALL THINGS IN THIS WORLD, HE WILL REIGN FOR THREE YEARS AND SIX MONTHS, AND SIT IN THE TEMPLE IN JERUSALEM; AND THEN THE LORD WILL COME FROM HEAVEN IN THE CLOUDS, IN THE GLORY OF THE FATHER, SENDING THIS MAN AND THOSE WHO FOLLOW HIM INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE; BUT BRINGING IN FOR THE RIGHTEOUS TIMES OF THE KINGDOM.

This quote reveals significant details about Irenaeus’ beliefs about the future temple:

Writing 110 years after Titus destroyed the second temple, he wrote that there would be a future temple in Jerusalem.

IRENAEUS STATED THAT THE ANTICHRIST WOULD “SIT IN THE TEMPLE IN JERUSALEM” EXACTLY AS PAUL SAID HE WOULD DO IN 2 THESSALONIANS 2:4. HE PREDICTED THAT JESUS HIMSELF WOULD DESTROY THE ANTICHRIST AT HIS SECOND COMING, WHICH ALIGNS WITH WHAT BOTH PAUL AND JOHN WROTE ABOUT THE ONE WHO WOULD DESECRATE THE TEMPLE.

Although Irenaeus’ words are not Scripture, it’s more than a little significant that THIS HIGHLY RESPECTED SECOND CENTURY AD THEOLOGIAN BELIEVED THERE WOULD BE A THIRD TEMPLE IN JERUSALEM IN WHICH A STILL FUTURE WORLD LEADER WOULD SIT AND DEFILE BEFORE HIS DESTRUCTION AT JESUS’ RETURN TO THE EARTH.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER FOR US TODAY?

Does the fact that Daniel’s seventieth week awaits a future fulfillment matter of us today? It does because of the following reasons:

THE LORD’S PURPOSES FOR ISRAEL REMAIN INCOMPLETE

Since the seventieth week of Daniel has not yet happened, it signifies that the Lord’s purposes for Israel remain in place. His redemptive purposes for Jewish people and Jerusalem remain incomplete based on the words of Daniel 9:24.

Daniel 9:24 KJV – “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.”

Those who say that God has rejected Israel must also fit Daniel’s seventieth week into the events of the first century, which according to the words of Jesus, Paul, and John is impossible. According to Daniel 9:24, THE LORD’S REDEMPTIVE PURPOSES FOR BOTH HIS “PEOPLE” AND JERUSALEM REMAIN INCOMPLETE AND AWAIT A FUTURE FULFILLMENT.

2. MODERN-DAY ISRAEL FULFILLS BIBLE PROPHECY

In order for the seventieth week of Daniel to start, ISRAEL MUST EXIST AS AN ESTABLISHED NATION AND BECAUSE OF THREATS TO ITS FUTURE, BE WILLING TO AGREE TO THE FUTURE COVENANT OF PEACE OFFERED BY THE ANTICHRIST. THE NATION MUST ALSO POSSESS THE CITY OF JERUSALEM AND HAVE BOTH THE MEANS AND PASSION TO BUILD THE THIRD TEMPLE. THESE THINGS ARE ALL TRUE.

If one were to write a script for what must happen before the last week of Daniel’s prophecy begins, one couldn’t do better than what’s now happening in the Middle East. The only thing missing is Israel’s access to build on the temple mount, which MOST STUDENTS OF BIBLE PROPHECY BELIEVE WILL BE A PART OF THE COMING PEACE AGREEMENT WITH THE “MAN OF LAWLESSNESS.”

3. THERE MUST BE SEVEN-YEAR TRIBULATION

Since Daniel’s seventieth week awaits a future fulfillment, there must be a future seven-year period of turmoil on the earth when the Lord will turn His attention to Israel and bring a remnant of His people to repentance. Jeremiah famously referred to it as the time of “Jacob’s trouble” (30:7).

JOHN PLACED THE BEAST’S DEFILEMENT OF THE TEMPLE IN THE MIDST OF THE JUDGMENTS HE WROTE ABOUT IN REVELATION CHAPTERS 6-18 AND WROTE THAT THE LORD WOULD ALLOW HIM TO “EXERCISE AUTHORITY FOR FORTY-TWO MONTHS” (REVELATION 13:5-6). THIS FITS PERFECTLY WITH THE TIME OF “GREAT TRIBULATION” JESUS SAID WOULD HAPPEN BETWEEN THE DESECRATION AND HIS RETURN (MATTHEW 24:15-31).

4. THE CHURCH DOESN’T BELONG IN THE TRIBULATION

If the Lord’s purpose of Daniel’s seventieth week is to complete His purposes for Israel, and it is, does that mean the church age must end before its start? Yes, it does!

In other articles, I have written at length citing biblical evidence supporting the pre-Tribulation Rapture. The purpose of Daniel’s seventy weeks further supports the CHURCH’S ABSENCE DURING THE TRIBULATION.
