“BRICS IS INHERENTLY DIFFERENT BECAUSE OF RUSSIA AND CHINA’S CENTRAL ROLES – THIS ISN’T ABOUT NON-ALIGNMENT ANYMORE,” Nicolas Michelon, CEO of Asia Intelligence Advisory, told Arabian Business.

“WE’RE SEEING A COORDINATED EFFORT TO CREATE GENUINE ALTERNATIVES TO U.S.-DOMINATED FINANCIAL SYSTEMS.”

THE EXPANDED GROUP, WHICH WELCOMED SAUDI ARABIA, UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Iran earlier this year, now commands approximately 36 percent of global GDP and represents nearly half the world’s population.

Member states collectively control $45 trillion in investable wealth, with their combined millionaire population projected to grow by 85 percent over the next decade.

UAE’s strategic entry

The UAE’s first participation as a BRICS member comes at a crucial juncture. According to Michelon, the UAE’s first participation as a BRICS member to the Kazan summit “comes at the perfect time.”

“BRICS HAS A CHALLENGE NOW TO MORPH FROM A LOOSE COLLECTION OF COUNTRIES… INTO A PLATFORM THAT STARTS TO PROPOSE VERY CONCRETE, SOLID RESPONSES TO THE CURRENT GEOPOLITICAL CHALLENGES,” he added.

Mahdi Jasim Ghuloom, a Regional Security Analyst at Le Beck International, noted that “Russia-UAE relations are warming, with President Putin describing the relationship as a ‘strategic partnership.’”

However, he pointed out potential tensions that need management, particularly between the UAE and Iran, two of the new BRICS members.

The UAE-Russia trade relationship has shown remarkable growth.

“Bilateral trade between Russia and the UAE is very dynamic. It hit more than 11 billion USD in 2023. We’ve seen almost an 11-fold increase over the past less than 10 years,” Michelon said.

He noted that since 2022, trade has become more concentrated in specific sectors, with Russian gold exports accounting for over 66 percent of exports to the UAE, and diamonds representing more than 20 percent.

INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK

THE NEW DEVELOPMENT BANK (NDB) AND ASIAN INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT BANK (AIIB), CORNERSTONE INSTITUTIONS OF THE BRICS FINANCIAL ARCHITECTURE, HAVE ALREADY COMMITTED SUBSTANTIAL FUNDING FOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS ACROSS MEMBER STATES.

During Wednesday’s sessions, leaders discussed expanding these institutions’ reach and ESTABLISHING NEW MECHANISMS FOR CROSS-BORDER SETTLEMENTS IN LOCAL CURRENCIES.

The Non-Aligned Movement emerged during the height of the Cold War when newly independent nations, led by leaders like India’s Jawaharlal Nehru, Yugoslavia’s Josip Broz Tito, and Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser, sought to chart a middle course between the US and Soviet power blocs.

At its peak, NAM represented the largest grouping of states after the United Nations, advocating for decolonisation and economic development while maintaining strategic autonomy from superpower influence.

Challenges ahead

Experts identify several challenges facing the bloc. For the UAE specifically, Ghuloom said, one challenge could be addressing US concerns about such relations with Russia.

However, he explained that “the UAE appears to be one of the few countries in the world… that has its leadership invited to both the US President’s and Russian President’s residences almost a month apart, despite global tensions pushing countries to ‘choose sides’ exclusively.”

The three-day summit, continuing through Thursday, is expected to conclude with the Kazan Declaration, which will outline specific measures for deepening economic cooperation and expanding the bloc’s global influence.

THE GROUP REAFFIRMED ITS COMMITMENT TO PROMOTING A MULTIPOLAR WORLD ORDER WHERE ALL NATIONS HAVE AN EQUAL SAY IN GLOBAL AFFAIRS. THIS IS REFLECTED IN THE DECLARATION’S CALL FOR GREATER REPRESENTATION OF EMERGING AND DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IN INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS.

“WE NOTE THE EMERGENCE OF NEW CENTERS OF POWER, POLICY DECISION-MAKING, AND ECONOMIC GROWTH, WHICH CAN PAVE THE WAY FOR A MORE EQUITABLE, JUST, DEMOCRATIC, AND BALANCED MULTIPOLAR WORLD ORDER,” the document stated, adding that THIS SYSTEM WOULD BE MORE BENEFICIAL TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES THAN THE CURRENT WESTERN-LED INTERNATIONAL ORDER.

The BRICS countries welcomed the growing influence of regional organizations such as the African Union and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). These organizations are viewed as important platforms for promoting economic cooperation, security, and cultural exchange among their member states. The declaration also called for a strengthened World Trade Organization to resolve trade disputes and an expanded UN Security Council to provide greater representation for the Global South.

SOVEREIGN EQUALITY AND NEW BRICS PARTNERS

The group emphasized that all countries have the right to pursue their own development paths and make decisions about their internal affairs without interference from other states.

“WE REAFFIRM OUR COMMITMENT TO THE BRICS SPIRIT OF MUTUAL RESPECT AND UNDERSTANDING, SOVEREIGN EQUALITY, SOLIDARITY, DEMOCRACY, OPENNESS, INCLUSIVENESS, COLLABORATION, AND CONSENSUS,” the group wrote.

THE GROUP NOTED THE “CONSIDERABLE INTEREST” EXPRESSED BY COUNTRIES IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH TO WORK WITH, IF NOT JOIN, THE BLOC, AND THUS ENDORSED THE MODALITIES FOR A NEW BRICS ‘PARTNER COUNTRY’ CATEGORY.

“We strongly believe that extending the BRICS partnership with EMDCs emerging market and developing countries will further contribute to strengthening the spirit of solidarity and true international cooperation for the benefit of all,” it stated.

The current BRICS members are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia has yet to ratify its membership invitation. With nearly three dozen countries expressing interest in joining the economic bloc, Moscow considers establishing a BRICS partner category the best option for potential expansion.

OPPOSING WESTERN COERCIVE MEASURES

THE DECLARATION CONDEMNS ALL SANCTIONS AND UNILATERAL COERCIVE MEASURES AS INCOMPATIBLE WITH INTERNATIONAL LAW, HIGHLIGHTING THEIR FAR-REACHING IMPLICATIONS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS.

“WE ARE DEEPLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE DISRUPTIVE EFFECTS OF UNLAWFUL UNILATERAL COERCIVE MEASURES, INCLUDING ILLEGAL SANCTIONS, ON THE WORLD ECONOMY, INTERNATIONAL TRADE, AND THE ACHIEVEMENT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS,” the declaration states, noting that economic sanctions disproportionately affect the poor and vulnerable in targeted countries.

The group also condemns “UNILATERAL MEASURES INTRODUCED UNDER THE PRETEXT OF CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS” AND OPPOSES “UNILATERAL PROTECTIONIST MEASURES THAT DELIBERATELY DISRUPT GLOBAL SUPPLY AND PRODUCTION CHAINS AND DISTORT COMPETITION.”

“ACKNOWLEDGING THE ROLE OF BRICS MEMBERS AS THE WORLD’S LARGEST PRODUCERS OF NATURAL RESOURCES, WE UNDERSCORE THE IMPORTANCE OF STRENGTHENING COOPERATION AMONG BRICS MEMBERS ACROSS THE ENTIRE VALUE CHAIN AND AGREE TO TAKE JOINT ACTIONS TO OPPOSE UNILATERAL PROTECTIONIST MEASURES,” the group declared.

NON-DISCRIMINATORY TRADE IN LOCAL CURRENCIES

“WE RECOGNIZE THE WIDESPREAD BENEFITS OF FASTER, LOWER-COST, MORE EFFICIENT, TRANSPARENT, SAFE, AND INCLUSIVE CROSS-BORDER PAYMENT INSTRUMENTS BASED ON MINIMIZING TRADE BARRIERS AND ENSURING NON-DISCRIMINATORY ACCESS,” the document states, likely referring to Russia’s exclusion from the Western SWIFT payment system following the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict.

“WE WELCOME THE USE OF LOCAL CURRENCIES IN FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS BETWEEN BRICS COUNTRIES AND THEIR TRADING PARTNERS,” it continues, CALLING FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A BRICS CROSS-BORDER PAYMENTS INITIATIVE. The document also supports THE BRICS NEW DEVELOPMENT BANK’S FINANCING PROJECTS IN LOCAL CURRENCIES AND ITS GROWTH INTO A “PREMIER MULTILATERAL DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTION.”

In a speech at the summit on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that USING LOCAL CURRENCIES INSTEAD OF THE DOLLAR OR EURO “HELPS KEEP ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FREE FROM POLITICS AS FAR AS POSSIBLE IN TODAY’S WORLD.”

THE MIDDLE EAST

THE BRICS DECLARATION HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF PROMOTING GLOBAL SECURITY THROUGH DIPLOMACY, MEDIATION, AND INCLUSIVE DIALOGUE. While acknowledging the “need to respect the legitimate and reasonable security concerns of all countries,” the group stressed the “need to engage in conflict prevention efforts, including through addressing their root causes.”

“WE REITERATE OUR GRAVE CONCERN AT THE DETERIORATION OF THE SITUATION AND HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN THE OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY, IN PARTICULAR THE UNPRECEDENTED ESCALATION OF VIOLENCE IN THE GAZA STRIP AND IN WEST BANK AS A RESULT OF THE ISRAELI MILITARY OFFENSIVE,” THE DECLARATION READS, NOTING THAT THE ISRAELI OPERATION HAS “LED TO MASS KILLING AND INJURY OF CIVILIANS, FORCED DISPLACEMENT AND WIDESPREAD DESTRUCTION OF CIVILIAN INFRASTRUCTURE.”

It calls on Hamas to immediately release its Israeli hostages, and Israel to immediately halt military operations and withdraw from Gaza. Israel’s bombing and ground invasion of Lebanon are also condemned, while its sabotage of thousands of Hezbollah communication devices in September is described as a “terrorist attack.”

The document condemns the “illegal foreign military presence” in Syria, a reference to the roughly 800 US troops still in the country against Damascus’ wishes, and denounces Israel’s bombing of an Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital, which killed Iranian Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi and eight other Iranian military officers.

Ukraine

As the BRICS nations have adopted a policy of neutrality regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the declaration did not commit the group to backing either side. Instead, it stressed that “ALL STATES SHOULD ACT CONSISTENTLY WITH THE PURPOSES AND PRINCIPLES OF THE UN CHARTER” AND ACKNOWLEDGED “RELEVANT PROPOSALS FOR MEDIATION AND GOOD OFFICES AIMED AT A PEACEFUL RESOLUTION OF THE CONFLICT THROUGH DIALOGUE AND DIPLOMACY.”

This language is similar to a declaration released last month by Brazil, China, and a dozen other members of the ‘FRIENDS OF PEACE’ GROUP, which called for a “comprehensive and lasting settlement” to the conflict. Kiev, however, has rejected all peace proposals but its own, which demands that Russia pay reparations, restore Ukraine’s 1991 borders, and hand over its officials to face war crimes tribunals – demands dismissed by Moscow as delusional.

The Kazan Summit Declaration paid little attention to the Ukraine crisis, as it is not the central issue for the economic bloc, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. “Yes, this is an important issue on the Russian agenda, but it is far from being the central issue for BRICS. And it was reflected exactly as much as it is supposed to be on the BRICS agenda,” Peskov said.

The second day of the summit included bilateral meetings between leaders of BRICS member states and panel sessions where key global issues were discussed. The Palestinian people appreciate Russia’s position on the issue of their statehood, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has said.

Putin cited preliminary estimates that average BRICS country economic growth in 2024-2025 will be 3.8%, compared to global figure of 3.2-3.3%.

The BRICS countries’ share of global GDP in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) will amount to 36.7% by the end of 2024 and will continue to expand, Putin predicted. Meanwhile, the share of the Group of Seven (G7) leading Western economies is projected to account for slightly above 30%.

“THE TREND FOR THE BRICS’ LEADING ROLE IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY WILL ONLY STRENGTHEN,” Putin said, citing population growth, capital accumulation, urbanization, and increased labor productivity, accompanied by technological innovations as key factors.

WEST’S UNILATERAL SANCTIONS AND DEBT BURDEN

The Russian president warned of a potential new global crisis, citing the growing debt burden in developed countries, unilateral sanctions, and protectionist policies as key threats. “These factors are fragmenting international trade and foreign investment, particularly in developing nations,” Putin said.

“In this regard, we propose creating a new BRICS investment platform, which would become a powerful tool for supporting our national economies and would also provide financial resources to the countries of the Global South and East,” Putin said.

BRICS-BASED GRAIN EXCHANGE

The Russian leader proposed a common BRICS grain exchange to protect trade between members from excessive price volatility. BRICS countries are “among the world’s largest producers of grain, vegetables, and oilseeds,” he noted. Such a bourse could be expanded to trade in other major commodities such as oil, gas and precious metals, Putin said. The initiative is aimed at protecting national markets from negative external interference, speculation and attempts to cause artificial shortages of food products, according to Putin.

International politics seems to be losing its ability to develop in a linear fashion. From a layman’s point of view, this is of course extremely sad. But if we look at what’s happening in the broader context, it can even inspire a certain optimism. This is mainly because, given the current balance of power, any unswerving development is guaranteed to lead us to a much greater, possibly global, tragedy.

In other words, the extraordinarily tragic events that fill today’s news agenda are likely to conceal a gradual movement towards a more stable world, for which the constant revision of what we call the international order will be a matter of routine. But at the same time, the likelihood of a revolutionary scenario, to which the near monopoly of a small group of states would inevitably lead us, will be minimized.

In this context, the international community, and in particular its leading states, is constantly faced with the challenge of choosing between two forms of engagement with the outgoing world order: destruction and creation. Both are in dialectical interaction, and it would be strange to think that there is a clear and simple path to a new, more just world order.

All the more so because the opponents of the international community, represented by a small group of countries led by the United States, are not only conducting vigorous defensive operations, but are themselves trying to create the conditions for preserving their current privileges in the future. And they have very solid resources and influence to mobilize – which are not limited to punitive instruments against dissidents.

Therefore, the path of revision of the international order that most of the world’s countries are now embarking on is certainly much more difficult than any attempt at revolutionary revision. Although – and this is encouraging – it leaves more opportunities for what is happening now to be studied in the future.

Of all the efforts and initiatives that are rightly seen as driving the new world order, BRICS, the now nine-nation bloc – originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India and China – is arguably the most important. From the outset, it included states that had the potential to embody, in theory and in practice, fundamental changes in the balance of power.

Therefore, the BRICS were not inherently inapplicable to the criteria of effectiveness developed by Western political science to assess the success of international organizations.

THE CREATION OF SUCH AN ASSOCIATION WAS IN ITSELF A MAJOR ACHIEVEMENT

Firstly, because it included countries with very different foreign policy interests. That is, their desire to act together was underpinned by sufficiently reliable objective circumstances to make cooperation between such different powers meaningful.

Secondly, because the emergence of BRICS signaled from the outset the West’s inability to control the evolution of international governance. The last major achievement of the US and Europe in this area was the creation of the G20 in 2009, a group of countries chosen by the West to share responsibility with Washington for the damage caused to the global economy by the US financial crisis of 2008. But as none of the other G20 countries wanted to do so, the impact of the group’s activities was rather insignificant. At the same time, even though the G20 has almost completely lost its relevance, it is still used by large developing countries as a way to increase their international presence. 

IN THE CASE OF BRICS, FOR THE FIRST TIME, WESTERN COUNTRIES DID NOT INITIATE OR LEAD THE PROCESS

The achievement is actually quite fantastic, given that the entire international architecture, starting with the UN, is now a product of the foreign policy choices of the United States and Western Europe.

AS IT HAS DEVELOPED, THE BRICS GROUP HAS BECOME THE LITERAL EMBODIMENT OF A REVISIONIST APPROACH TO THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL ORDER. In fact, it is the antithesis of both the revolutionary aspirations that took place earlier in history and the conservatism of the West, which is more and more stubbornly trying to defend the previous order, which suited it. In other words, BRICS IS RIGHTLY PERCEIVED AS AN INSTRUMENT OF CIVILIZED RESTRUCTURING OF THE ENTIRE SYSTEM OF GLOBAL POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC REGULATION, AS WELL AS ITS SPECIFICITIES, EXPRESSED IN CONCRETE INSTRUMENTS OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION, where the West still has a monopoly position. This seems to be the reason for the growing popularity of BRICS. The demand of different countries to join the bloc is so vividly expressed that it poses a serious choice for the countries that have already signed up.

The fact is that BRICS, as well as the interest in it from a growing number of participants in the international community, is the first real experience of interaction between states outside the order established by Western Europe and the US at the dawn of the modern international system. All pre-existing initiatives or alliances were more or less part of this order and subject to its rules. This was the reason for the isolation of the USSR even at the moments of its greatest strategic power. After the Second World War, Western countries were able to create institutions that allowed them to keep the energy of their main adversary under control and, in the end, to condemn it to inevitable defeat. Now the situation seems to have changed.

MORE AND MORE OF THE WORLD’S COUNTRIES BELIEVE THAT THE WEST’S CURRENT MILITARY AND ECONOMIC DOMINANCE DOES NOT GUARANTEE ITS TOTAL DOMINANCE IN THE FUTURE. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT CANNOT BE SEEN BY OTHERS AS THE ONLY INSTRUMENT FOR SOLVING THEIR OWN DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS. THE FACT THAT BRICS WAS INITIALLY DRIVEN BY THE DEVELOPMENT AGENDA OF ITS MEMBERS, RATHER THAN THE DESTRUCTION OF AN UNJUST WORLD ORDER, HAS BEEN ITS GREAT ADVANTAGE.

The BRICS countries are now trying to maintain this ideology and platform as the basis of their activities. But it is increasingly difficult to do so against the backdrop of the West seeking to destroy what it can no longer fully manage. It is forcing the rest of us to take more drastic measures, or to contemplate their inevitability. This, in particular, explains some of the divergent approaches to the BRICS agenda between its main members, China and India.  While China does not seek direct confrontation with the West, it does see the need to more consistently break the monopoly of the US and Western Europe. To this end, Beijing has very considerable resources and the diplomatic ability to impose its will without engaging in direct armed confrontation, as Russia does. India, for its part, sees BRICS as an essential tool for achieving its own development goals

They contrast much less than China with the way the West would like to see the world. Moreover, Indian policymakers see the US and Western Europe as an important source of technology and investment. The country now needs them much more than China, which has taken almost everything it needs from the West in recent decades.

At the same time, both powers are acting within the dialectic of destruction and creation that characterizes the behavior of all those who, because of their size, can no longer tolerate the Western monopoly. And we can assume that the predominance of one or the other of these two forms of interaction with the outgoing international order is due to the ability of countries to defend their interests independently. China’s ability to stand up for its interests is now much greater simply because of its developed economy and the growing prosperity of its population. The others do not have such advantages and therefore their positions differ. But another question is how inevitable the shift is to more offensive behavior as domestic strength and resources accumulate? 

In a world of uncertainty 

The fantastic success of the BRICS as the first alternative project to the Western order is also giving rise to curiosities, which at the same time characterize the state of contemporary international politics quite well. Recently, Türkiye, a NATO member and the territorial base of US nuclear forces in Eurasia, announced its desire to join BRICS. Unlike all other BRICS countries, even those traditionally closest to the US, such as the United Arab Emirates, Ankara is a formal ally of Washington, whose military planning is carried out under American control within the military bloc of the West. As recent events around Israel show, Türkiye gives the US no real reason to question its commitment to securing the most basic American interests in the Middle East. In any case, we have yet to see any examples of the Turkish president’s rhetoric on Israel having a significant impact on his actual policy.

However, it would be superficial to attribute Turkey’s sudden desire to join BRICS solely to the peculiar style of its president, or even less likely, to his desire to become a “Trojan horse” for the West within a grouping that opposes its fundamental aspirations. Most likely, the Turkish authorities sincerely see BRICS as a potentially important tool for solving their own issues. Firstly, to gain prestige in the world and sources of development funds, which the West seems not to provide sufficiently to the Turks. Secondly, to free the country from the political dependency it has fallen into as a result of the choices that led it to relative economic prosperity and stability in the second half of the last century. We should therefore not regard Turkey’s statements on BRICS as mere rhetoric. 

Another interesting example is Malaysia, which is also very persistent in knocking on the BRICS door and proposing very specific parameters for its contribution to the organization. Malaysia is a solid country with no history of foreign policy adventurism, a full member of ASEAN that has proven its ability to solve development problems without relying on external patronage. Indeed, the current state of ASEAN is probably one of the reasons why the Malaysian government is looking for new sources of growth and to raise its profile on the world stage. ASEAN is one of the most successful examples of a significant group of nations working together to address their pressing domestic development challenges.

Over the past few decades, its members have achieved significant results. In recent years, however, it has encountered certain difficulties. Now, it’s literally being torn apart from within by the US desire to use it against China. Meanwhile, the main goals have been achieved and the transition to the political level is impossible, as the example of ASEAN’s post-coup policy in Myanmar has shown. The question of what more ASEAN can offer its members is a legitimate one. At the same time, as in the case of Turkey, Kuala Lumpur is well aware that the West cannot and does not want to provide sources of development.

An important reason why countries in the Global South are increasingly looking to BRICS is that their relationship with traditional leaders in the West is changing on both sides.

The emerging powers themselves need resources to achieve a new breakthrough in their economic standing and importance in regional and global politics. This goes hand in hand with a desire for greater autonomy in key decision-making, as this is demanded by society and can yield greater foreign policy dividends. However, reaching new heights of development puts them on a par with the weakening West, especially its most vulnerable and declining part – Europe. No one in the West is prepared to help emerging economies become competitors in the global market and in consumption.

So the US and Western Europe want to give less and demand more from the rest of the world. In some cases this works – when they are dealing with rather weak powers. But more and more countries in the world are not happy with this situation, because it creates risks to their own internal stability and international threats, and does not offer such serious benefits. IN THE END, THE US CAN ONLY REALLY RELY ON THOSE STATES WHOSE POLITICAL SYSTEMS IT FULLY CONTROLS. Although even in those, as the example of Germany shows, control remains a rather cumbersome affair. But it persists at all levels. The dialectic of creation and destruction here is obviously tilted in favour of the latter, which makes US policy destructive for the development of the world as a whole, in contrast to the Cold War era when the confrontation between the US and the USSR could bring real benefits to developing countries. The rapid growth of China in the 1970s and 1980s is a direct confirmation of this.

The aspirations of Malaysia and a number of other large developing countries to join BRICS do not reflect the effectiveness of the organization in the traditional sense of the word, but rather irreversible changes of a global nature. At the same time, it should be born in mind that the current criteria for the effectiveness of various types of associations were also created under conditions of total Western dominance. In fact, the effectiveness of an organization in this sense is its ability to perform tasks aimed at preserving the monopoly position of the US and the EU in world affairs, as well as the irremovability of the elites in these countries at the domestic level. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT BRICS, LIKE ANY OTHER ORGANIZATION IN THE EMERGING WORLD ORDER, WILL NEED A NEW SYSTEM FOR ASSESSING EFFECTIVENESS, BASED ON SPECIFIC TASKS THAT REFLECT THE INTERESTS OF THE MEMBER STATES.

However, the realization of these interests will inevitably be influenced by the battle between creation and destruction that determines the nature of the main processes in the modern world. It will be the second most important factor in the development of the international order in the coming decades, after the interaction between the great nuclear powers. The presence of this polemic, as we can see in the example of the development of BRICS, will contribute to the persistence of strong uncertainty in international politics and the world economy, which will not allow for a clear formulation of strategic objectives at both the national and international levels. And any attempts at such clarity will turn out to be just signs of some countries’ attempts to lead others down the wrong path and gain unilateral advantages at their expense. For Moscow, maintaining uncertainty is not a problem: after all, we are now dealing with that permanent freedom of choice for which Russian foreign policy and diplomacy, judging by historical experience, is best equipped.

BOOSTING TRADE SETTLEMENTS IN NATIONAL CURRENCIES BETWEEN MEMBERS OF THE BRICS GROUP IS A STRATEGIC NECESSITY, RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN HAS SAID, ADDING THAT A SHIFT FROM THE US DOLLAR WOULD STRENGTHEN FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE AND REDUCE GEOPOLITICAL RISKS.

Russia is currently hosting the 16th annual BRICS Summit in the city of Kazan. The group comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as well as new members Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE, which joined in January. 

Speaking on Tuesday with the president of the BRICS New Development Bank, Dilma Rousseff, PUTIN EMPHASIZED THAT THE USE OF LOCAL CURRENCIES INSTEAD OF THE DOLLAR OR EURO “HELPS TO KEEP ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FREE FROM POLITICS AS FAR AS POSSIBLE IN THE CONTEXT OF TODAY’S WORLD.” 

THE UNPRECEDENTED US-LED SANCTIONS CAMPAIGN AGAINST MOSCOW DUE TO THE UKRAINE CONFLICT HAS FORCED RUSSIA AND OTHER BRICS MEMBERS TO SEEK ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO PURSUE TRADE. RUSSIA’S LEADING BANKS WERE BANNED OUTRIGHT FROM THE SWIFT INTERNATIONAL PAYMENT SYSTEM BACK IN 2022 AS PART OF THE RESTRICTIONS.

LAST MONTH, PUTIN SAID THAT RUSSIA WAS ALREADY ACTIVELY SWITCHING TO THE USE OF NATIONAL CURRENCIES IN CROSS-BORDER TRADE WITH ITS BRICS PARTNERS, AND THAT THE GROUP’S MEMBERS WERE JOINTLY DEVELOPING A PAYMENT AND SETTLEMENT FRAMEWORK TO BE USED IN TRADING.   

In August, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said that over 95% of mutual settlements between Russia and its biggest trading partner, China, are carried out using the ruble or yuan.

FIVE-FOLD SINS RESULTING IN MEN’S ETERNAL DAMNATION:

1. Worship the beast. (6X). (Rev. 13:4, 13:8, 13:12, 14:9, 14:11)
2. Worship the beast’s image. (6X). (Rev. 13:14, 13:15, 14:9, 14:11, 16:2, 19:20)
3. Take the beast’s mark. (6X). (Rev. 13:16, 13:17, 14:9, 14:11, 16:2, 19:20)
4. Take the beast’s number. (2X). (Rev. 13:17, 13:18)
5. Take the beast’s name. (2X). (Rev. 13:17, 14:11)

Commentary: There are a total of eighteen (18) verses that indicate the eternal sins of damnation that result from worshipping the beast, worshipping his image and taking his mark of identification. Three (3) denotes God’s emphasis and intensity. Six (6) denotes the evil number of man = 18, or 6+6+6 = 18, or 666 . . . “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is he number of a man; and his number is Six Hundred and threescore and six (666).” (Rev. 13:18). Worshipping the beast, his image and taking his mark are the eternal sins that men commit during the Tribulation.

There are a total of ten (10) combined references of evil men taking the beast’s mark, number or name. These three descriptions are synonymous with being identified with (or belonging) to the beast and his system. Ten (10) denotes God’s allness or physical completeness regarding things on earth. These ten references indicate man’s complete earthly evilness and damnation resulting from taking either the mark, number of name of the beast and his kingdom.

These men are so deceived and evil, that they not only allow themselves to worship the beast and his fake image, but they allow themselves to be physically ‘branded’ or marked in order to be identified with the beast. Evil men obtain this mark, number or name so they can also participate in the global economy in terms of buying and selling. They have to be identified as having this mark, number or name, physically evident on either their right hand or forehead, in order to be allowed to execute a purchasing or selling transaction. Once evil men worship the beast, his image and take his mark (or number, name), they are damned.

There are three verses regarding a very specific, powerful and clear angelic warning given to men on earth, to NOT worship the beast, or his image, or take his mark (name, number). Three (3) denotes God’s emphasis and intensity.

. . . “And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.” (Rev. 14:9, 14:10, 14:11)

Twice (2) the message is directed at men. The angel repeats himself indicating that the message is for men and what behavior is judged eternally sinful (for ever and ever). Men who worship the beast, his image and take his mark will;

1. Experience God’s wrath.
2. God’s wrath will not be diluted, or held back, but given in full strength.
3. They will be thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone for torment.
4. There torment will be forever and ever (eternity).
5. Their torment will be witnessed by holy angels.
6. Their torment will take place in the presence of the Lamb.
7. They will have no rest day or night, forever and ever (eternity).

There are seven (7) specific results that stem from men worshipping the beast, his image and taking his mark (name or number). Seven (7) denotes God’s divinely determined completeness as to his purpose or plan. Eternal punishment in the lake of fire and brimstone, day and night is the strongest wrath that God gives evil men (and Satan, beast/antichrist and false prophet). There is a specific mention that this torment takes place in the presence of the Lamb. These men, while in their torment, will see or consciously be aware of the existence of Jesus Christ. This will provide added pain, anguish and misery since they will be painfully made aware of the choice of their decisions (to worship the beast, his image and take his mark). They were warned not to do what they did.

The Bible gives plenty of examples of the glory that is given to those who did NOT worship the beast, his image or take his mark. Yet, despite the angelic warning . . . despite the 3 ½ year testimony of two witness and prophets . . . despite the witnessing of Tribulation Saints . . . despite the flying angel who proclaimed the gospel of Jesus Christ . . . evil men still chose to worship the beast, his image and to take his mark, name or number.

They chose to ignore the messages, the warnings, and the testimonies. And now, they are in the lake of fire and brimstone, and will have to pay the price for their evil decision(s), for eternity. They see Jesus Christ, and have become painfully aware of what they could have had through Jesus Christ and instead, they chose the false, empty promises of Satan by worshipping the beast, his image and taking his mark, name or number.

Their extreme bitterness and woeful regret will emotionally torment them for eternity, in addition to the physical pain, suffering and torment that they will experience in the lake of fire for eternity. Through their decision to follow Satan, God gave them exactly what they wanted. They did not want anything to do with Jesus Christ, who paid for their sins with his own blood. As such, God gave them over to Satan, since it was their free decision or choice, and what they desired while they were physically alive on earth.

These evil men did everything humanly possible to ignore warnings, to blaspheme God, to ignore the gospel of Jesus Christ, and instead they accepted and believed in lies, worshipped Satan, the beast and his image. Evil men even went so far as to physically defile their bodies (flesh) by taking the branding (mark, number or name) of the beast. All of these actions and behaviors enabled evil men to give themselves totally and wholeheartedly over to Satan through his system of the beast/antichrist and the false prophet.

There are two visions describing what John the Apostle saw, regarding men who were overcomers (them that had gotten victory) by NOT worshipping the beast, his image or taking his mark, number or name.

. . . “And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgements are made manifest.” (Rev. 15:2, 15:3, 15:4).

. . . “And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgement was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.” (Rev. 20:4).

Men who do NOT worship the beast, his image and take his mark are described as;

1. They are in heaven (stand on a sea of glass).
2. They have harps of God.
3. They sing praises and worship Jesus Christ for their salvation.
4. They acknowledge that God’s judgements came to pass.
5. They are given thrones upon which they sit upon.
6. They are given judgement.
7. They live and reign with Christ for a thousand years.

There are seven (7) specific results that stem from men NOT worshipping the beast, his image and taking his mark (name or number). Seven (7) denotes God’s divinely determined completeness as to his purpose or plan. These blessings or glories are the complete opposite of what awaits those men who DID worship the beast, his image and took his mark, name, number.

1. The righteous are in heaven for eternity versus evil men who are in the lake of fire and brimstone for eternity.
2. The righteous are joyful and play harps versus evil men who are bitter, resentful, angry, tormented, cry and wail in anguish.
3. The righteous sing the praise of and worship Jesus Christ versus evil men who once praised and worshipped Satan (through the beast, his image and in taking his mark).
4. Righteous men acknowledge that what God said would come to pass, in fact did come to pass (made manifest) versus evil men who ignored and rejected warnings, the gospel and testimonies of the truth.
5. The righteous are given thrones in heaven versus evil men who are drowning in torment in the lake of fire.
6. The righteous are given judgement versus evil men who are judged.
7. The righteous live and reign with Christ verses evil men who die and fall with Satan.

The avoidance of doing these five (5) eternal sins is one of the most important themes, in the entire book of Revelation. Men must avoid doing these things, literally at all costs. Even to the point of being beheaded or martyred. Men’s eternal destinies depend on it. Worshipping the beast, his image and taking his mark, name or number result in eternal damnation. There is no way of sugar coating or downplaying this reality.

JUDGING OR JUDGEMENT IS DESCRIBED AS;

God is the judge and provides judgements or decisions based on the actions, behaviors and deeds of men and angels.

Judgement is a decision requested to be made on behalf of someone (Tribulation Saints) who were wrongfully hurt (beheaded).

Someone (nations) are caught bloody red handed and are angry knowing that they will be judged for their actions, behavior and evil deeds. They are angry because they didn’t get away with it and were caught. They know they are going to have pay a price which they can’t afford.

Judgement is a request that someone be righted a wrong done to them.

Judgement is a request for a reward promised based on a stated outcome.

Judgement is based on timing. An evil act is done, its results are noted and accounted for. Time comes for the evil act to be judged and the resulting judgement exercised or made manifest.

Judgement, or the decision of what should be done has to be acted upon or made to occur (sent to prison). This is known as making a judgement manifest or physically exercised. This is the doing of what should be done.

Witnesses in the public gallery indicate that God’s judgements are “true and righteous.” This means that the public gallery can attest to the fact that God did take everything into account, all the details, actions, deeds, events, behaviors, statements, intents and came to the correct and truthful conclusion regarding the matter. Nothing was left out. Everything was taken into consideration as evidence, properly evaluated and applied against the benchmark, standard and/or law that was being applied. God’s administration of justice and his resulting judgements are found to be accurate, spot on, truthful, correct, no question about it. In Biblical words, “true and righteous.”

God is described as judging the “great whore” a.k.a. Babylon City (the great worldly capital of the beast’s/antichrist’s kingdom).

God is strong, meaning he can’t be swayed or weak in the sense that he lets some evil slide a bit in terms of not being judged or of receiving judgement. He is firm in his judgements and not weak-kneed. He does not fold under public pressure. He can’t be influenced, bribed, manipulated or pushed by a particular special interest group, lobby or entrenched political ideology or group. He is strong, firm, steadfast, unwavering in the application of his administration of justice.

The wrath of his resulting judgements is not watered down or filtered out or held back. He gives the criminal, evil-person no slack and gives them the fullest extent of prison term possible (eternity). They are not sent to a plush prison serving three square meals a day with a basketball court, but to a lake of fire and brimstone. God does not ‘molly-coddle’ the evil, he gives them exactly what they deserve. He does not withhold his judgements, he pours out his wrath in full strength (at just the right time).

God’s judgement comes very swiftly, within “one hour.” There is no long drawn out period of rebuttals, challenges, reviews, counter-suits, passing on to a higher court, etc. A decision is made and done. The action of the decision is made manifest, very quickly. There is no delay in the manifestation of the decision. Babylon City is destroyed within one hour, split into three parts by a very great earthquake, consumed by fire and hammered by 100lb. hailstones (weight of a talent). Period.

There is no punishment meted out in stages, over a long period of time. There is no slap on the wrist that comes with an admonition to don’t do it again. The celestial sledgehammer is dropped quickly and decisively, no force is held back.

God’s judgement includes not only the living but also the dead. Jesus Christ opens his book of life, to see if a dead man’s name is in it. The book of life is not unlike an accounting ledger that records all the debits and credits amassed over a period of time. These debits and credits are referred to as “according to their works.” If a man’s name is found in his book of life, Jesus acknowledges as much to the Father and “confesses the man’s name even to the angels.” Through Jesus Christ and his book of life, God is able to righteously judge dead men. Jesus’ book of life accounts for everyone, past, present and future.

Numbers within numbers, meanings within meanings. Twelve (12) descriptions of judging or judgement and twelve (12) references or verses from throughout the book of Revelation. Judging / Judgement. (Def.); to form a conclusion about a subject or outcome, to decide as in a case of court, to give a verdict about someone or something in court as truthful, applying the administration of justice and truthfulness. Only God and Jesus Christ are the judges. Period.

 Only God and Jesus Christ do the judging. Period. Only God and Jesus Christ reward, withhold or punish. Period. Only God and Jesus Christ are judge, jury, and jailer. God has his wrath. Jesus Christ has the keys to heaven and hell. Having judgement and exercising judgement is derived from authority and rule. One can only be a judge if they have the authority to judge and the right to judge. One has to be competent to judge, to be able to discern right from wrong, truth from lies, good from evil, just from unjust, righteousness from unrighteousness, clarity from deception, godly from ungodliness, saved from unsaved.

To be able to judge, one has to know all the facts, all the outcomes, all the intents, all the behaviors and apply these against a benchmark, a standard, a law that determines whether the data observed meet the benchmark, standard or law. Since God is omnipotent and knows everything occurring past, present and future, he is supremely just in knowing everything to take into account in performing judgement. He is the only one capable of exercising correct, truthful and righteous judgement because he can and does take everything into consideration when exercising his administration of justice.

Jesus Christ is the benchmark, the standard and/or the law. Jesus Christ paid our court fees, he paid the bail, and also paid a very expensive price so we wouldn’t have to go to jail, to the dungeon, to the hangman or to the lake of fire. God’s law of righteousness and truthfulness is;

Admit/Acknowledge/Accept that you are sinner. Ask God’s forgiveness and repent of your sins.

. . .For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)

. . .As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one. (Romans 3:10)

. . .If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8)

Believe Jesus is Lord. Believe that Jesus Christ is who He claimed to be; that He was both fully God and fully man and that we are saved through His death, burial, and resurrection. Put your trust in Him as your only hope of salvation. Become a son or daughter of God by receiving Christ.

. . .That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (John 3:15-17). For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)

Call upon His name, Confess with your heart and with your lips that Jesus is your Lord and Savior.

. . .That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:9-10)

This is the benchmark, standard and/or law by which God judges men. If Jesus Christ finds a man who meets this benchmark, standard and/or law, he acknowledges and confesses the man’s name before God as belonging to him and having meet the requirements. Jesus Christ acts as our lawyer, on our behalf, in the administration of God’s justice. Jesus saves us in God’s court of law and in the administration of God’s justice.

But the fearful, and UNBELIEVING, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in THE LAKE WHICH BURNETH WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE: WHICH IS THE SECOND DEATH.

SEVEN-FOLD REFERENCE TO LAKE OF FIRE JUDGEMENT:

1. “He that hath an ear, let hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of THE SECOND DEATH (LAKE OF FIRE).” (Rev. 2:11).
2. “The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he SHALL BE TORMENTED WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever; and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosover receiveth the mark of his name.” (Rev. 14:10-11).
3. “And THE BEAST was taken, and with him THE FALSE PROPHET that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These BOTH WERE CAST ALIVE INTO A LAKE OF FIRE BURNING WITH BRIMSTONE.” (Rev. 19:20).
4. “And the devil that deceived them was cast into THE LAKE OF FIRE AND BRIMSTONE, WHERE THE BEAST AND THE FALSE PROPHET ARE, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” (Rev. 20:10).
5. “And death and hell were cast into THE LAKE OF FIRE. THIS IS THE SECOND DEATH.” (Rev. 20:14).
6. “And whosover was not found written in the book of life WAS CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE.” (Rev. 20:15).
7. “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part IN THE LAKE WHICH BURNETH WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE: WHICH IS THE SECOND DEATH.” (Rev. 21:8).

The lake of fire is also known as the ‘second death’. This is the final place of burning, everlasting torment for Satan, the antichrist, the false prophet and those un-saved, un-believing souls from throughout the ages found NOT to be in the book of life, at the white throne judgement, at the end of the Millennium. The lake of fire and second death are also reserved for those deceived during the Tribulation who took the mark of the beast and worshipped him and his image.

 The evil dead are resurrected to be judged by Christ for their evil works and for their rejection of Him who offered himself for their salvation and forgiveness of their sins. As a result of their sins and judgment, they are cast into the lake of fire that represents a second death (the first death being physical body death and souls/spirits being in Hell). The evil dead are resurrected into bodies and cast into the lake of fire to be severely tormented, having no rest day or night, and are absent from a loving God and their Savior who offered himself for them.

THE GREAT IRONY IS THAT THESE PEOPLE RECEIVED EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANTED. THEY REFUSED CHRIST AND WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM, THEY WANTED TO EXIST IN ETERNITY WITHOUT COMMUNION WITH GOD AND CHRIST, ON THEIR OWN TERMS. THEY LITERALLY RECEIVED WHAT THEY ASKED FOR. THE STENCH OF THEIR PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL TORMENT RISES UP IN SMOKE, FOR ETERNITY.

God made both man and angels as eternal beings, hence they will exist forever in one state or another. Which state will any of us choose to exist in? The choice is up to us, and God grants us the freedom to make that choice for ourselves. For better or worse, we have no one to blame (certainly not God) except ourselves for whatever choices we make on earth.
