THE BLAST OF THE TRUMPET: EXPLORING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS 2024

Summer is winding down, and we’ll soon see stores flood with kids begrudgingly walking through the school supplies aisle. But there’s more to fall than just back-to-school shopping and pumpkin patches.  In fact, there’s much, much more.  As the sun sets on October 2nd, families all over the globe will begin to settle into the first of the fall Biblical holidays: Rosh Hashanah or the Feast of Trumpets.  Despite common beliefs, the holidays in the Bible are not simply Jewish holidays. Rather, everyone is invited to participate in these holy celebrations. 

It’s important to know that the Jewish calendar operates in a different way than the American one we’re so used to. While our days begin with the sun rising each morning, days for the Jewish people begin at sundown, as the first days are described in Genesis, with the evening coming first.

FEAST OF TRUMPET SYMBOLISM

Rosh Hashanah is also called Yom Teruah and translates to “Day for blowing trumpets.”  So, the trumpets we blow! 

SEVEN TIMES TO BLOW TRUMPETS

Biblically, trumpets were blown for a handful of different occasions: 

1. To signify the beginning of a new month
2. To remember or hold a memorial day 
3. To signify the beginning of a Jubilee year or year of rest 
4. To gather all of God’s People
5. To warn of impending danger
6. To rouse people to repentance 
7. To coronate a new king of Israel 

 In this case, the trumpets are blown on this Jewish new year to gather God’s people, rouse them to repentance and will one day coronate our reigning King Jesus, who will be accompanied by the SOUND OF TRUMPETS UPON HIS RETURN. (Zechariah 9:14) 

But we don’t just use any ol’ brass trumpet that’s fit for a marching band. Instead, these sounds come from a shofar, or a ram’s horn. 

WHERE DOES JESUS FIT?

The Old and New Testaments speak of Jesus Christ. The books of the Old Testament all point to His coming, death & resurrection as the Messiah and the New Testament books point to the days when He will be our reigning king for all eternity.  Similarly, the spring holidays speak of Jesus’s first coming, while THE FALL HOLIDAYS SPEAK OF HIS NEXT COMING. THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS REMINDS US THAT JESUS IS KING AND ALSO ANNOUNCES THAT JUDGMENT IS COMING. 

One day, a series of ONE HUNDRED TRUMPET BLASTS WILL BE SOUNDED to announce that the eternal court is in session. JESUS WARNS US WITH THE SHOFAR THAT HIS JUDGMENT IS COMING TO THOSE WHO DO NOT REPENT but also that his mercy is waiting for those who turn and respond to His call. 

Although a somewhat solemn day, we celebrate Rosh Hashanah with shouts of joy, celebrating Jesus’s mercy, goodness and future reign.  We can stand with confidence on that day of 100 trumpets because we have been preparing each year.  To celebrate and prepare your heart with us, join us for our corporate gathering as we lay down our emblems of repentance.  

Rosh Hashanah 2024, which ushers in the Jewish year 5785, starts just before sundown on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024, and ends after nightfall on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024. As the holiday segues into Shabbat, one must perform an eruv tavshilin on Wednesday afternoon.

Observed on the day G‑d created Adam and Eve, it’s celebrated as the head of the Jewish year. The central observance of Rosh Hashanah is blowing the shofar (ram’s horn).

THIS YEAR, THE SHOFAR IS BLOWN ON THURSDAY (OCT. 3) AND FRIDAY (OCT. 4).

Rosh Hashanah is indeed the New Year in the sense that it marks the start of the Jewish calendar year. Unlike the secular New Year’s Day, it is a holy time, dedicated to prayer, feasting, and hearing the shofar in synagogue.

WHEN TO BLOW THE SHOFAR?

The Torah refers to Rosh Hashanah as the “DAY OF THE [SHOFAR] BLAST.” Since Rosh Hashanah is two days long, we need to hear the shofar blown during the daytime hours of both of those days—unless the first day falls on Shabbat, in which case we blow the shofar only on the second day.

Although the shofar may be blown until sunset, the traditional time for shofar blowing is during morning services, after the Torah has been read, before the Musaf prayer (additional service recited on Shabbat and holidays). It is customary to blow the shofar several more times during the Musaf service.

It FORESHADOWS THE DAY OF JUDGMENT AT THE END OF DAYS, which the prophet describes as “A DAY OF SHOFAR AND ALARM against the fortified cities and against the high towers

It reminds us of THE REVIVAL OF THE DEAD, about which we read, “dwellers of the earth … A SHOFAR IS SOUNDED YOU SHALL HEAR.

There are different customs as to how many times the shofar is blown on Rosh Hashanah. In most communities, the shofar is blown one hundred times.

We learn that when the people of Israel hear the shofar sounded on Rosh Hashanah, they are brought to a level wherein they are indeed capable of BRINGING ABOUT THE FINAL REDEMPTION. When they sound the shofar in fulfillment of the precepts of the day, their closed hearts are opened, they regret their sins, and their thoughts turn to repentance. SATAN KNOWS THE POWER OF THE SOUNDS OF THE SHOFAR. Though they might originate from man’s lips, they can well CULMINATE WITH THE COMING OF MASHIACH BEN DAVID.

 The sound of the shofar, heard throughout Israel on Rosh Hashanah, is laden with symbolism, acting as A CALL TO AWAKEN SPIRITUALLY AND TO ACKNOWLEDGE GOD’S POWER AND SOVEREIGNTY.

For believers in Yeshua, Yom Teruah (the Feast of Trumpets) foreshadows THE “FINAL TRUMPET CALL,” mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15:52, WHICH WILL ANNOUNCE THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD AT CHRIST’S RETURN. In Jewish tradition, individuals petition God to be inscribed in the “BOOK OF LIFE” FOR ANOTHER YEAR. THIS SYMBOLIC BOOK REPRESENTS DIVINE JUDGMENT AND MERCY, WITH ONE’S NAME RECORDED BASED ON THEIR DEEDS. The concept of the Book of Life is mirrored in the New Testament, particularly in Revelation 20:15 and 21:27, where NAMES WRITTEN IN THE LAMB’S BOOK OF LIFE SIGNIFY ETERNAL LIFE FOR THOSE REDEEMED BY CHRIST.

The book, tree and water of life. Tree of life and water of life, each have three (3) references, denoting God’s emphasis and intensity regarding a subject, action or event.

 The TREE OF LIFE exists in the heavenly city, New Jerusalem. It has 12 (twelve) manner of fruit, a different fruit for each month, and the leaves of which are used for medicinal purposes by the men and nations of earth. The tree of life does not exist on earth, but is physically located in New Jerusalem. Only redeemed men or the saints, are able to have access to the tree of life to enjoy its heavenly fruit.

The WATER OF LIFE also only exists in New Jerusalem and flows directly out of or from the throne of God. God allows anyone who freely wants to drink from the crystal pure river, to drink as much as they want. Whether the reference to water is figurative (word of God) or literal (crystal clear, pure water), either result is the same. Saints or the Bride of Christ are able to access either freely and God will supply abundantly. There is no shortage of the word of God, or the water of life. Being the case is made for physical fruit from the tree of life, it is most likely accurate to believe that the water of life is also a physically crystal clear and perfect water.

THE BOOK OF LIFE RECEIVES THE MOST REFERENCES, SEVEN (7) WHICH DENOTES GOD’S DIVINELY COMPLETED PURPOSE OR PLAN. THE BOOK OF LIFE IS SO IMPORTANT (FOR A MAN’S NAME TO BE IN IT), THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT REFERS TO IT SEVEN (7) TIMES.

The book of life is a sort of book-of-ledgers (using an accounting term). It reflects and contains the names of men who have accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, through his forgiveness of their sins and the shedding of his blood. They have acknowledged that Jesus Christ is Lord and believed he is who he said he was, while they were alive on earth. The book of life also contains a record of these men’s deeds, both good and bad, even though they are saved by the grace of God and Jesus Christ. In some cases, men will be rewarded for their faithful service and/or not lose any of the rewards that were set aside for them.

Other saved men, however, might have some rewards withheld from them for something they did or didn’t do to benefit the kingdom of Christ. Only Christ knows what any of these rewards or withholdings are.

The Bible does indicate that Christ sets aside as many as five (5) various crowns for Christian overcomers depending on either what they had to endure while alive, or what they did for the benefit of Christ’s kingdom. In any event, these things are accounted for in the book of life. THE MOST ETERNALLY IMPORTANT THING IS TO HAVE YOUR NAME “LISTED IN” CHRIST’S BOOK OF LIFE AND TO NOT HAVE YOUR NAME “BLOTTED OUT OF THE BOOK OF LIFE.” IF YOU DIE AND HAVE NOTACCEPTED JESUS CHRIST’S OFFER OF SALVATION THROUGH THE FORGIVENESS OF YOUR SINS BY THE SHEDDING OF HIS BLOOD, YOUR NAME IS ERASED, REMOVED OR BLOTTED OUT FROM HIS BOOK OF LIFE.

Jesus Christ is the author of life, and your name has to be in the book he authored in order to receive eternal life, receive the rewards he has set aside for you and to ESCAPE THE LAKE OF FIRE, ALSO KNOWN AS THE “SECOND DEATH.”

But the fearful, and UNBELIEVING, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in THE LAKE WHICH BURNETH WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE: WHICH IS THE SECOND DEATH.

SEVEN-FOLD REFERENCE TO LAKE OF FIRE JUDGEMENT:

1. “He that hath an ear, let hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of THE SECOND DEATH (LAKE OF FIRE).” (Rev. 2:11).
2. “The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he SHALL BE TORMENTED WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever; and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosover receiveth the mark of his name.” (Rev. 14:10-11).
3. “And THE BEAST was taken, and with him THE FALSE PROPHET that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These BOTH WERE CAST ALIVE INTO A LAKE OF FIRE BURNING WITH BRIMSTONE.” (Rev. 19:20).
4. “And the devil that deceived them was cast into THE LAKE OF FIRE AND BRIMSTONE, WHERE THE BEAST AND THE FALSE PROPHET ARE, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” (Rev. 20:10).
5. “And death and hell were cast into THE LAKE OF FIRE. THIS IS THE SECOND DEATH.” (Rev. 20:14).
6. “And whosover was not found written in the book of life WAS CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE.” (Rev. 20:15).
7. “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part IN THE LAKE WHICH BURNETH WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE: WHICH IS THE SECOND DEATH.” (Rev. 21:8).

The lake of fire is also known as the ‘second death’. This is the final place of burning, everlasting torment for Satan, the antichrist, the false prophet and those un-saved, un-believing souls from throughout the ages found NOT to be in the book of life, at the white throne judgement, at the end of the Millennium. The lake of fire and second death are also reserved for those deceived during the Tribulation who took the mark of the beast and worshipped him and his image.

 The evil dead are resurrected to be judged by Christ for their evil works and for their rejection of Him who offered himself for their salvation and forgiveness of their sins. As a result of their sins and judgment, they are cast into the lake of fire that represents a second death (the first death being physical body death and souls/spirits being in Hell). The evil dead are resurrected into bodies and cast into the lake of fire to be severely tormented, having no rest day or night, and are absent from a loving God and their Savior who offered himself for them.

THE GREAT IRONY IS THAT THESE PEOPLE RECEIVED EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANTED. THEY REFUSED CHRIST AND WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM, THEY WANTED TO EXIST IN ETERNITY WITHOUT COMMUNION WITH GOD AND CHRIST, ON THEIR OWN TERMS. THEY LITERALLY RECEIVED WHAT THEY ASKED FOR. THE STENCH OF THEIR PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL TORMENT RISES UP IN SMOKE, FOR ETERNITY. God made both man and angels as eternal beings, hence they will exist forever in one state or another. Which state will any of us choose to exist in? The choice is up to us, and God grants us the freedom to make that choice for ourselves. For better or worse, we have no one to blame (certainly not God) except ourselves for whatever choices we make on earth.

GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGEMENT

GREAT WHITE THRONE AND ETERNAL JUDGEMENT

As October 2nd, 2024, draws near – the first night of Rosh Hashanah – Israel faces a sobering reality: This will be the first time in the nation’s history that it is at WAR ON MULTIPLE FRONTS DURING THIS SACRED HOLIDAY. Some view this as a troubling FULFILLMENT OF THE “BIRTH PANGS” mentioned by Yeshua in Matthew 24:6-8, where “WARS AND RUMORS OF WARS” ARE A SIGN OF THE TIMES.

Of all the feasts, Yom TERUAH IS THE MOST CONCEALED AND SHROUDED IN MYSTERY. Whereas the other festivals commemorate an event from Israel’s history or have specific religious purposes around them, God’s people were not told the reason to celebrate Yom Teruah in the Scriptures. They were simply told to gather together and blow the shofar.

The sound of the shofar elevates the hearts of men and women with THE SENSE THAT THE KING IS COMING!

The most prominent activity of Yom Teruah is the blowing of the shofar (ram’s horn). There are over ONE HUNDRED SHOFAR BLASTS heard throughout the prayer services, culminating with A FINAL BLAST BEING KNOWN AS THE “LAST TRUMP.” This regal sound is a call to repentance that reaches the souls of all who hear, with each blast DENOTING A SENSE OF SPIRITUAL AWAKENING.

Based on Biblical clues ancient tradition, Jews believe that God breathed life into Adam on Yom Teruah. In the days of the Bible, this was the date on the calendar when the kings of Israel were crowned and took the throne. THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD and complete ingathering of Israel are also TIED TO YOM TERUAH.

Today, the Jewish people see Yom Teruah as THE DAY WHEN THE BRIDEGROOM WILL RETURN FOR HIS BRIDE. The prophets foretold:

CHRISTIAN SIGNIFICANCE

Christians see the Biblical holy days as foreshadows of the work of the Messiah — what He has accomplished and what He will accomplish in the future. While the Spring Feasts look back at Yeshua’s First Coming, the FALL FEASTS LOOK FORWARD TO HIS SECOND COMING.

After Pentecost, there is a long summer break before the next Biblical appointed time. This is prophetic for the time in which we live now, since Messiah’s atonement. THIS LONG PERIOD OF TIME WILL SUDDENLY COME TO AN END WHEN THE BLAST OF THE TRUMPET SOUNDS.

FOLLOWERS OF JESUS SEE YOM TERUAH AS THE FUTURE DAY WHEN THE “LAST TRUMP” WILL SOUND, YESHUA WILL AGAIN SET HIS FEET ON THIS EARTH, THE FAITHFUL WILL BE RESURRECTED and the long awaited King of Israel will sit on the throne of His father David.

One more cool thing! THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS IS ALSO CALLED YOM HAKESEH – THE HIDDEN DAY – BECAUSE IT IS THE ONLY HOLY DAY DESIGNATED BY THE LORD TO BE KEPT ON A NEW MOON. IN ANCIENT ISRAEL, SIGHTING THE SMALL SLIVER OF THE NEW MOON COULD BE CHALLENGING AND UNPREDICTABLE. UNLIKE THE OTHER FEAST DAYS, NO ONE COULD PRECISELY CALCULATE THE EXACT DAY OR HOUR THE FESTIVAL COULD BEGIN. (That’s why even today, two days are reserved for the Feast in case the moon isn’t visible on the first night).

Of all the feasts, YOM TERUAH IS THE MOST MYSTERIOUS ONE. There are few scriptures about it. The primary reference is Leviticus 23:23-25: And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, In the SEVENTH MONTH, ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE MONTH, you shall observe a day of solemn rest, a MEMORIAL PROCLAIMED WITH BLAST OF TRUMPETS, a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work, and you shall present a food offering to the Lord.”

YOM HAKESEH, MEANING “THE DAY OF THE HIDING” OR “THE HIDDEN DAY.” IT IS THE FEAST THAT IS CONCEALED AS TO WHEN IT STARTS. It can only start when the moon begins to reflect again. The New Moon of Tishrei is neither announced nor blessed in the synagogue. The term keseh or keceh is derived from the Hebrew root kacah, which MEANS TO “CONCEAL, COVER, OR HIDE.” Every day during the month of Elul, a trumpet is blown to warn the people to turn back to G-d, except for the last day of Elul, the day preceding Rosh HaShanah (Elul 29 is known as the “Day of Release” at the end of a Shemita year.) On that day, the trumpet is not blown, because it was hidden from Satan, the adversary. IT IS TAUGHT THAT THE SHOFAR DOES NOT BLOW ON THIS DAY SO THAT SATAN DOES NOT KNOW THE DAY JUDGMENT BEGINS.

ROSH HASHANAH IS CONCEALED AND SHROUDED IN MYSTERY.

 The mystical aspect of Rosh HaShanah is indicated in Scripture: “Sound the shofar on the New Moon, in CONCEALMENT OF THE DAY OF OUR FESTIVAL” (Psalm 81:3). The hiddenness of the day also goes along with what Jesus said in MATTHEW 24 “NO MAN KNOWS THE DAY NOR THE HOUR.”

Psalm 27:5 reminds us: “For in the time of [Jacob’s] trouble HE SHALL HIDE ME IN HIS PAVILION; in THE SECRET OF HIS TABERNACLE SHALL HE HIDE ME; He shall set me up upon a rock.”

John 14:2 IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE ARE MANY MANSIONS: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. When the disciples asked Yeshua what will be THE SIGN OF HIS COMING, HE TOLD THEM, “OF THAT DAY AND HOUR NO ONE KNOWS, NOT EVEN THE ANGELS OF HEAVEN NOR THE SON, EXCEPT THE FATHER ALONE.” (MATTHEW 24). This saying is one of the many REASONS WHY BELIEVERS CONNECT THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS WITH YESHUA’S RETURN!

. . . “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (John 3:15-17). For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).

C. Call upon His name, Confess (7) with your heart and with your lips (7) that Jesus is your Lord and Savior.

. . . “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10).
