US state rocked by swarm of five earthquakes in just 48 hours
The US Geological Survey has not reported of any damage caused by the five earthquakes. It is uncommon for residents in northern California to notice the quakes, with the majority ranking as a three-magnitude or less, but some people reported feeling their home shaking from the seismic activity.
However, 2024 has seen a record number of mini-quakes across the state and geophysicists are now warn California could be at risk of a generation-defining massive earthquake. ‘2024 has had more earthquakes than any year we’ve seen since 1988,’ Caltech geophysicist Dr Lucy Jones told reporters. ‘We should expect this to continue.’ EXPERTS BELIEVE A MAJOR QUAKE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA – USUALLY DEFINED AS 7.0 AND UP – COULD KILL AT LEAST 1,800, LEAVE 50,000 INJURED, AND CAUSE MORE THAN $200 BILLION IN DAMAGE.
The spate of quakes occurred as a heat come encompassed the state, leaving many people questioning if the record-breaking heatwave was at fault. Roughly 25 million residents faced heat alerts this weekend that stretched from California’s southern border up to Washington and Idaho , but the USGS assured that it was not to blame. ‘There is no such thing as ‘earthquake weather,’ the USGS said. ‘Statistically, there is approximately an equal distribution of earthquakes in cold weather, hot weather, rainy weather, etc.’

PARK FIRE GROWS INTO CALIFORNIA’S FIFTH-LARGEST FIRE ON RECORD, LEAVES A TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION

The Park Fire in California grew to the state’s 5th largest wildfire on record on July 30, 2024, and wreaked havoc across four counties, destroying 277 structures and displacing over 4 000 residents. With only 18% containment, the blaze continues to threaten thousands of homes, prompting a state of emergency declaration.
The Park Fire started on July 24 and grew into the fifth largest in California’s history by July 30, covering 156 470 ha (386 764 acres), according to the latest reports.
The fire, believed to have been caused by arson, is affecting four counties: Butte, Plumas, Shasta, and Tehama. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for areas affected in Butte and Tehama counties.
Thus far, it destroyed 277 structures and damaged 29 others across Butte and Tehama counties and is 18% contained as of 21:08 LT on July 30. It is currently threatening 4 200 structures.
In Butte County, the fire consumed 21 450 ha (52 999 acres) of land, destroyed 214 residential and commercial structures, and damaged another 27.
In Tehama County, it consumed 135 116 ha (333 765 acres) of land, destroyed 63 structures, and damaged 2.
So far, the fire has caused the closure of 26 roads, and several evacuation orders and warnings have been issued across the four counties. Over 4 000 people have been evacuated.
A total of 5 779 personnel, 40 helicopters, 519 engines, 180 bulldozers, 115 water tenders, and 112 crews have been assigned, along with 77 others, to suppress the fire and conduct damage control.
Smoke was heavy on July 30 across the Tehama Zone, especially in the northeast portion, while smoke was significantly less over the southern part of the fire.
The weather is expected to become much warmer and drier later this week, with some winds and potential for thunderstorms. Caution is advised during this time.

CALIFORNIA NATIONAL GUARD TO SUPPORT LINE FIRE RESPONSE
What you need to know: California has deployed thousands of firefighters, with air and ground support, to fight the fast-growing Line Fire near the community of Highland in San Bernardino County.
SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that the California National Guard will support the state’s ongoing response to the Line Fire in San Bernardino County.
Through its activation, authorized under the Line Fire state of emergency, the California National Guard will deploy:
Four UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters for water bucket dropping operations
Two C-130 aircraft with Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems (MAFFS)
Four 20-person hand crews (80 soldiers). They report to Camp Roberts tomorrow for equipment distribution and will be assigned to the Line Fire on Thursday in support of CAL FIRE.
One military police company to support the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department with traffic control points in evacuated areas.
“As the Line Fire continues to pose a threat to San Bernardino communities, we’re pouring resources into this incident aggressively by deploying more air and ground support through the California National Guard. This is on top of nearly 2,000 firefighters, nearly 200 engines, and air assets we already have tackling this fire. California stands with these communities and has their backs.”

In addition to the air and ground support, Cal Guard is also assigning one military police company for law enforcement support (area security, traffic control points in evacuation areas) to assist the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office.
Moving quickly to support the state’s response to the Line Fire, Governor Newsom on Saturday proclaimed a state of emergency in San Bernardino County and announced that California has secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help ensure the availability of vital resources to suppress the fire.
The fast-moving Line Fire near the City of Highland has burned more than 23,000 acres, forcing the evacuation of residents and threatening homes and critical infrastructure.
