CÓRDOBA WILDFIRES FORCE INTENSE FIREFIGHTING EFFORTS AS NEW THREATS EMERGE IN LA CALERA, ARGENTINA
ByRishav KothariSunday, September 8, 2024 WATCHERSNEWS.COM

Wildfires that erupted on September 5, 2024, continue to spread across Argentina’s Cordoba Province, with emergency teams deployed in multiple regions. As of September 6, three major wildfire outbreaks were being battled by over 200 firefighters, with 50 personnel still engaged in containment efforts.
Wildfires that began on September 5 continue to affect several locations across Córdoba Province, with emergency teams battling flames in multiple areas. As of midday on September 6, three active wildfire outbreaks have been reported by the Secretariat for Climate Risk Management, Catastrophe, and Civil Protection.
The first major outbreak is located on the Tiro Federal property in La Calera. The fire originated near Avenida Don Bosco and has been moving in a northwesterly direction, now threatening to reach La Calera.
The fire, with a front approximately 1 000 m (3 280 feet) wide, is being closely monitored as it advances toward the nearby road. Thick columns of black smoke, a result of burning tires in a warehouse, are visible in the area, though officials state that there is no immediate risk to homes or individuals at this time.

As a precautionary measure, those present at Tiro Federal have been evacuated, and traffic on Route E-55 has been cut off. Firefighters are working to protect a residential neighborhood in La Calera that could be impacted if the fire continues to spread.

Eight families were evacuated from the La Cuesta neighborhood due to the presence of smoke, but the fire didn’t enter the neighborhood and their homes were safe from danger.

In a separate incident, emergency teams are responding to a wildfire in the Traslasierra region. The fire is developing between the towns of Mina Clavero and Salsacate, specifically near Ambul. Firefighters have been deployed to contain the spread and safeguard nearby communities.
Additionally, a fire reactivated in the Villa del Dique area of the Calamuchita department on the morning of September 6. Firefighters are working to prevent further escalation.
Meanwhile, another fire in La Mezquita, located on the Third Army Corps property, has been contained. As of September 6, the smoke in the area has cleared, allowing the Córdoba-Carlos Paz highway to reopen for traffic. However, firefighters remain on-site to continue cooling the perimeter.
Nearly 200 personnel were involved in containing the flames, with water-dropping planes assisting throughout the day. Currently, 50 firefighting personnel are still working in the region.
Roberto Schreiner, spokesperson for the Risk Management Secretariat, said that efforts in Villa del Dique have made progress. Around 100 volunteer firefighters worked through the night of September 5, and the situation is now under control.
A third fire has been reported in the Traslasierra Valley, which began early on September 6 in the Pocho department, between Salsacate and Villa Cura Brochero. Volunteer firefighters, alongside personnel from the Provincial Fire Management Plan, are on-site attempting to manage the outbreak.
Efforts to control the fires are being complicated by changing weather conditions. On September 5, high winds accelerated the spread of the blaze in La Calera, prompting authorities to close National Route 20 between Yocsina and Malagueño. The fire injured at least four firefighters, and several people, including those in La Perla, were evacuated. Traffic and power disruptions are expected to continue in some areas, depending on fire conditions.
With several wildfires still active, authorities warn that additional road closures and evacuations are possible in the coming days. Residents have been advised to stay alert to official announcements as firefighters continue to battle fires across the region.
Local authorities also caution that the smoke is worsening air quality in certain areas, potentially affecting visibility on the roads and creating dangerous driving conditions.
Firefighting efforts will continue as personnel work to contain the flames and protect residents and properties across Córdoba Province.

SÃO PAULO WILDFIRES SHATTER RECORDS WITH 1 886 HOTSPOTS IN A SINGLE DAY, SURPASSING AMAZON REGION, BRAZIL
ByRishav KothariSaturday, August 24, 2024 WATCHERSNEWS.COM

A record-breaking surge in wildfires swept across São Paulo on Friday, August 23, 2024, with satellite data revealing 1 886 hotspots, nearly double the historical average for August. The fires accounted for 38 % of Brazil’s total hotspots that day, surpassing even the Amazon region.
The state of São Paulo experienced a surge of fires this Friday, recording 1 886 hotspots, according to satellite monitoring data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE).
This figure is double the historical average for August. Brazil reported 4 928 hotspots on the same day, with São Paulo accounting for 38 % of the country’s total. The number of fires in São Paulo on Friday exceeded that in the entire Amazon region, which registered 1 659 hotspots.
The previous record for the most fires in August was set in 2010, with 2 444 hotspots recorded throughout the entire month. On Friday alone, the state recorded two-thirds of that number.

In Urupês, in the interior of São Paulo, two firefighters from a power plant died while combating a fire in vegetation, as confirmed by the Civil Defense. According to the Public Security Department (SSP), the victims, aged 30 and 48, were in a truck when the driver lost control, causing a fuel leak that resulted in the vehicle catching fire.
The government of São Paulo established a crisis office to coordinate an emergency response. The operation, part of the ongoing “SP Sem Fogo” initiative, will involve monitoring and control actions throughout the weekend. The effort includes collaboration between the State Civil Defense, the Public Security Secretariat, and other key government departments.
According to the Civil Defense Emergency Management Center (CGE), 30 cities are currently on high alert for major fires, with active outbreaks reported. These areas are particularly vulnerable due to low humidity levels and a heatwave that has gripped the state. The situation is exacerbated by gusty winds, which can quickly spread fires.

The São Paulo government reported that some state and concession highways are closed due to large fires. These closures, ranging from total to partial, are significantly disrupting traffic in several regions.
“It is important that drivers avoid these routes until things return to normal and that they seek safe alternatives for their journeys. In addition, it is essential that everyone remains attentive to constant updates on traffic conditions monitored in real-time by emergency teams and responsible concessionaires,” said the government in a statement.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States provided a satellite image at the request of MetSul Meteorologia, showing the extent of the smoke spread across São Paulo.
The image from the GOES-16 satellite showed smoke originating from fires in São Paulo and surrounding regions, including the Amazon and Pantanal. This smoke, carried by pre-frontal north winds, moved from north to south, covering large parts of the state.

As a result, the skies over most cities in São Paulo turned orange or gray due to the dense smoke. This phenomenon was particularly noticeable in the capital and Greater São Paulo, where the late afternoon sky was tinged orange, with a red sun.
Air quality deteriorated significantly in many areas. Several monitoring stations operated by the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (Cetesb) recorded poor air quality in Greater São Paulo, as well as in Rio Claro, Piracicaba, Bauru, Jaú, Araraquara, Ribeirão Preto, Catanduva, and Araçatuba.
MetSul Meteorologia issued a warning that August 24 could also be a critical day for fires in São Paulo. While a cold front is expected to bring rain to some areas in the south and east, and near Paraná, the interior of São Paulo is forecast to remain hot and dry with strong winds, heightening the risk of more fires.
The regions of greatest concern are the center, north, and northeast of São Paulo. Widespread rainfall is not expected until August 25, when the cold front will reach more areas of the state.

MAJOR FOREST FIRE IN IZMIR, TURKEY FORCES EVACUATIONS AS FLAMES THREATEN RESIDENTIAL AREAS
ByRishav KothariSaturday, August 17, 2024 WATCHERSNEWS.COM

A rapidly spreading forest fire in Izmir, Turkey, is forcing evacuations as flames approach residential areas. Local authorities reported that strong winds and difficult terrain are hindering firefighting efforts, with the fire still raging in multiple locations since it broke out late Thursday, August 15, 2024, in the Karşıyaka district.
A forest fire in Turkey’s western coastal province of Izmir is threatening residential areas, prompting evacuations. Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban confirmed that the fire, which ignited late on Thursday in the Karşıyaka district, persists in multiple locations despite ongoing efforts by firefighters.
“The intervention is becoming difficult as it is very close to residential areas. There has been no loss of life so far,” said Elban. He added that winds reaching speeds of up to 80 km/h (50 mph) are hampering aerial firefighting efforts, though ground teams continue to work.
The governor also said that a village had been evacuated, and some houses had reportedly burned. Local broadcasts showed images of flames consuming large swathes of land and nearing apartment buildings, while thick black smoke enveloped the sky above the forests and city areas in Karşıyaka.
Meanwhile, fires in northwestern Turkey are also causing significant concern, with blazes reported in the Eceabat district of Çanakkale province, the Göynük district of Bolu province, and in Manisa province’s Gördes district.
Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı announced on Friday that the fire in Çanakkale, which was sparked by a roadside electricity pole, had been contained, and the Manisa fire was partially under control. However, efforts to extinguish the fire in Bolu were still ongoing. Yumaklı warned that the next three days pose a high risk of additional wildfires due to “high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds.”
Authorities in Çanakkale and Bolu have evacuated several neighborhoods and villages as a precaution, though they reported no immediate threat to residential areas.
In the Gallipoli Peninsula, a fire broke out in the Eceabat district near the village of Büyükanafarta, leading to the closure of the 57th Regiment Memorial and Conkbayırı.
“Thankfully, the fire was contained before reaching the 57th Regiment Memorial. No structures were damaged at Conkbayırı. Our efforts will continue through the night, but everything is going well so far,” said Minister Yumaklı.
Bekir Karacabey, a Turkish official, shared drone footage of the wildfires in Eceabat on X. “We are intervening non-stop from land and air with the guards of Yeşil Vatan to bring the forest fire in Eceabat, Çanakkale, under control,” he posted on X.
Minister Yumaklı warned that the operation over the next three days would be “extremely risky” due to the prevailing weather conditions.

More than 700 firefighters have been deployed to contain the fire. Meanwhile, the Anadolu Agency reported that more than 315 firefighters, forest commando teams, 98 vehicles, and many volunteers from Moldova and Romania, along with 26 planes and helicopters, are working to extinguish the fires despite the extreme heat and strong winds.
Sixty-five people who were trapped in their cars in the Varnavas area have been rescued, according to the local police department. Multiple evacuation orders were issued throughout Monday for the regions affected by the fire. Gale-force winds in the area caused the rapid spread of the fire, according to the local fire department.
The U.S. Embassy in Athens has issued a warning urging travelers to “exercise extreme caution in affected areas,” stating that “The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has announced Very High Fire Risk (Risk Category 4) and Extreme Fire Risk (Risk Category 5) for many areas in Greece, including areas close to Athens.”
Another fire that broke out earlier in the town of Megara in western Attica has been contained.
Authorities have advised citizens to stay indoors.

BALKANS AND SOUTHERN EUROPE BATTLE WILDFIRES AMID SEVERE HEATWAVE
ByRishav KothariFriday, August 2, 2024 WATCHERSNEWS.COM

The severe heatwave has sparked widespread wildfires across the Balkans and southern Europe over the past 10 days, causing 1 death, and prompting an international response to combat the blazes.
Hot summer temperatures have ignited widespread wildfires throughout the Balkans and southern Europe over the past 10 days, prompting an international firefighting response.
Serbia has dispatched helicopters to assist North Macedonia in combating uncontrollable wildfires amid extreme heatwave conditions. Firefighting helicopters are also actively engaged on the slopes of Mount Kozjak, near the Prohor Pcinjski monastery in southern Serbia.
North Macedonia has experienced severe wildfire damage this week, with large fires destroying and damaging homes, forcing evacuations, and resulting in the death of an elderly resident in a village approximately 60 km (37 miles) east of the capital, Skopje.
Officials reported that strong winds have accelerated the spread of wildfires in parts of eastern and central North Macedonia since July 29, with 66 wildfires erupting over the past 24 hours. North Macedonia is considering seeking assistance from NATO to control the situation.

In Albania, wildfires continued to threaten residential areas on July 31, particularly in the southern village of Mashkullore, though no damage was reported.

In the coastal town of Shengjin, hundreds of firefighters, military personnel, and volunteers managed to control a major fire after it damaged a roof and two beach bars, causing panic among visitors.

In Croatia, fires along the Dalmatian coast forced residents to evacuate, though no casualties were reported. According to Croatian emergency services, 755 firefighters were deployed to tackle 122 different fires with the support of 10 Canadair planes.
The Croatian fire brigade confirmed that fires in all areas had been successfully contained by August 1. However, the past 24 hours were particularly challenging. Firefighters cited July 31 as their toughest day so far this season, with over 1 000 firefighters and 20 firefighting planes responding to more than 100 fires.

The most serious incident occurred near the southern coastal town of Tucepi, where one firefighter was injured. A strong wind exacerbated the situation, making it difficult to control the blaze, which stretched for several kilometers.
Police detained a 65-year-old man suspected of accidentally starting the fire while working on his beehives, facing charges of endangering public safety. Residents endured a sleepless night, with some evacuating their homes, and power supplies were disrupted. Explosions, likely from gas canisters, were reported, and firefighting planes were seen flying overhead.
Extreme heat is also affecting other parts of Europe, with nine municipalities across Spain currently under orange warnings for high temperatures.

WILDFIRE DEVASTATES JASPER NATIONAL PARK, FORCES MASS EVACUATIONS, CANADA
ByTeo BlaškovićFriday, July 26, 2024 WATCHERSNEWS.COM

A DESTRUCTIVE WILDFIRE CONTINUES TO ENGULF PARTS OF JASPER NATIONAL PARK AND THE ADJACENT TOWN OF JASPER IN ALBERTA, CANADA, LEADING TO EXTENSIVE EVACUATIONS AND SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. AS OF THIS MORNING, THE fire, which started due to lightning, has destroyed an estimated 30 – 50 % of buildings in the area.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith provided an emotional update yesterday, describing the situation as the worst nightmare for the community.
“This is devastating for our residents and the many who cherish Jasper National Park,” Smith said, noting the park’s significance as a major tourist destination and a source of pride for many generations.
The latest map shows the estimated perimeter of what Parks Canada originally named the North and South Wildfires. Because the perimeters of the two wildfires have merged, they are now referring to the wildfires in Jasper National Park as the Jasper Wildfire Complex.
Accurately mapping the affected area has been challenging due to strong winds, extreme fire behavior, smoke, and the relocation of incident management personnel to Hinton on the evening of July 24, Parks Canada officials said.
This area is now estimated at 36 000 ha (88 958 acres).

The wildfire, driven by high winds and dry conditions, prompted immediate evacuation orders on Monday, July 22. Approximately 25 000 people, including residents and tourists, have fled the area.
The emergency alert initially stated that the fire was expected to reach the community in about five hours, or around 03:00 LT on Tuesday, but it was later updated to clarify that everyone needed to be out by then.
Incident Command confirmed that all critical infrastructure in Jasper, including the hospital, emergency services building, elementary and junior/senior schools, activity center, and wastewater treatment plant, has been successfully protected. However, a detailed damage assessment is pending.
Preliminary reports indicate that some homes and businesses have been lost, with the most significant damage occurring on the west side of town, southwest of Miette Avenue. Firefighting efforts have so far prevented major damage to infrastructure in the east end of town, and the priority remains on protecting unaffected structures.
In addition to structural damage, several bridges around the town and throughout the national park have been impacted, including Moberly Bridge and Old Fort Point Bridge. Bridges on the Icefields Parkway also require assessment for potential structural damage. These damages are expected to delay access to Maligne Lake and Highway 93, with a full damage assessment still forthcoming.
The Canadian National Railway’s main line through Jasper has been shut down due to the advancing flames. This critical transportation route, which connects Vancouver and Prince Rupert to the rest of Canada, has seen significant disruptions. CN Railway has deployed its firefighting train, Trident, to protect the track infrastructure, and there have been no reports of track damage so far.
Efforts to contain the wildfire are ongoing, with around 400 firefighters from around the globe joining the battle. However, despite recent rainfall providing temporary relief, forecasted warm weather is expected to worsen fire conditions in the coming days.
Authorities have warned that the battle against the fire could last for weeks, with a significant rebuild required once the flames are extinguished.

WILDFIRES IN ALBERTA AND BRITISH COLUMBIA FORCE EVACUATIONS, CANADA
ByRishav KothariMonday, July 22, 2024 WATCHERSNEWS.COM

Wildfires in northern Alberta prompted evacuations of three communities as the province contends with five significant blazes posing a severe threat to safety and infrastructure. Over 5 000 residents were affected, covering 62 000 ha (150 000 acres). Meanwhile, British Columbia is battling over 300 wildfires, exacerbated by a three-week heatwave. High temperatures and lightning have caused widespread evacuation orders, with firefighters struggling to contain the rapidly spreading flames across both provinces.
Wildfires in northern Alberta have prompted evacuations of three communities, as the province battles five significant “wildfires of note.” According to a provincial body, the fires pose a considerable threat to public safety, communities, and critical infrastructure.
Evacuation orders have been issued for the communities of John D’Or, Fox Lake, and Garden River, affecting approximately 5 000 residents and covering nearly 62 000 ha (150 000 acres).
Despite the widespread fires, no threat to oil sands production has been reported.
Currently, Alberta is experiencing 158 wildfire events, with 55 classified as out of control.

The Alberta government’s wildfire service reported that fire activity is expected to remain intense due to ongoing hot and dry weather.
Over 200 firefighters, 10 helicopters, and 43 pieces of heavy equipment are actively engaged in combating these fires, which were sparked by lightning.
In neighboring British Columbia, over 300 active wildfires are burning, with several evacuation orders in effect.
The BC Wildfire Service reported on July 21 that crews are struggling to contain the fires due to hot, dry conditions and localized winds. The province is enduring a three-week heat wave, with temperatures expected to remain high.
Environment Canada reported that 14 B.C. communities broke or matched daily high-temperature records on July 20.
Lytton recorded a high of 41.2 °C (106.2 °F), surpassing the previous record of 40.6 °C (105.1 °F) set in 1946. Other communities, including Cranbrook, Merritt, Princeton, Trail, and Vernon, also experienced record temperatures, reaching at least 36 °C (96.8 °F).
The Island Pond fire, located 17 km (10.6 miles) south of Canal Flats in East Kootenay, has grown to about 100 ha (247 acres) since its discovery on July 20.
The Regional District of East Kootenay has declared a state of local emergency, issuing an evacuation order for two addresses and warning 65 additional properties to be prepared for evacuation.
In the Cariboo Regional District, 29 parcels of land in the Kuyakuz Lake area, covering 923 km2 (357 miles2), have been evacuated due to five out-of-control wildfires, four caused by lightning.
The Antler Creek blaze, spanning 13.5 km2 (5.2 miles2), has led to evacuation orders for Barkerville Historic Town and Park heritage site, as well as the community of Wells.
“Unfortunately, we are at the whims of Mother Nature, so there’s not much we can do,” said Stewart Cawood, Barkerville’s public programming and media manager.
The Shetland Creek fire, north of Spences Bridge, B.C., is holding at approximately 150 km2 (58 miles2).
The B.C. Wildfire Service said that about 87% of the more than 300 blazes in the province were caused by lightning.
Evacuation orders and alerts remain in place for communities such as Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Spences Bridge, and the Ashcroft First Nation.
In Central Kootenay, the community of Silverton is on alert, with 107 properties south of the village under evacuation orders due to the Aylwin Creek wildfire.
The Aylwin Creek and nearby Komonko Creek fires together cover 6.5 km² (2.5 miles²), leading to the closure of Highway 6 south of Silverton.
Evacuation orders have also been issued across Slocan Lake from Silverton, affecting 21 waterfront parcels and a portion of Valhalla Provincial Park near Nemo Creek.

HISTORIC FLOODS, TENFOLD INCREASE IN WILDFIRES AND NOW A POTENTIAL EXTREME DROUGHT MAKE TRIPLE SUFFERING FOR BRAZIL
ByMehak KalraSunday, June 9, 2024 WATCHERSNEWS.COM

After historic floods recently claimed 172 lives in coastal Brazil, the country now faces a new crisis as fires rage through the Pantanal wetlands. These fires have surged nearly tenfold compared to the same period last year, setting the stage for a potential catastrophe worse than the devastating fires of 2020. With severe to extreme drought conditions expected, the situation is becoming increasingly dire.
Data from the Brazilian space research agency, National Institute for Space Research (INPE) reveals a staggering 980% jump in fires across the Pantanal wetlands this year through June 5, compared to the same timeframe in 2023.
This surge is especially concerning as the peak wildfire season for the region is just around the corner, typically starting in July and reaching its worst in August and September.
“It’s one of the worst starts of year in terms of hot spots since the beginning of the historical series in 1998,” reported Vinicius Silgueiro, territorial intelligence coordinator at local NGO Instituto Centro de Vida.
Spanning an area roughly ten times larger than Florida’s Everglades, the Pantanal is a haven for an incredible diversity of wildlife, from jaguars and tapirs to caimans, anacondas, and even giant anteaters. However, the region’s usual cycle of flooding has been disrupted by weak rains since late last year. This lack of water has left the Pantanal more susceptible to fires.

Adding to the worries, data from Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) suggests the Pantanal is likely to experience another severe to extreme drought this year. This comes after a disappointing wet season with rainfall falling short of the average by a significant 60%
On the heels of an unusual fire season in late 2023, the latest surge in fires in the Pantanal wetlands owes to El Niño. The El Niño weather pattern delayed the arrival of rain, causing a significant increase in fires. In November 2023 alone, there were 4 134 fires compared to the historical average of only 584 for that month.
Facing a surge in wildfires, the Brazilian government took immediate action on June 5 and signed a pact with governors of the Pantanal and Amazon regions to collaborate on fighting the blazes. The situation is most severe in Mato Grosso do Sul, which houses a large portion of the Pantanal. This state has already declared an environmental emergency due to the fires.
The environment minister has also warned of potential drought conditions in other parts of the country, following devastating floods in the south.
Brazil’s Environment Minister Marina Silva points to a “double whammy” of El Niño and climate change as the culprits behind the devastating floods. This phenomenon, where these factors combine to intensify extreme weather events, has been observed in other regions as well. Minister Silva warns the Amazon and Pantanal aren’t spared – these vital ecosystems are also experiencing climate extremes.
“While the Rio Grande do Sul faces a future of severe drought,” Minister Silva said, “the northeastern Caatinga, a unique and biodiverse ecosystem, is already under the threat of a severe drought.”

. . . “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (John 3:15-17). For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).
