Donald Trump has vowed to “always” protect Saudi Arabia if he is re-elected as US president during the upcoming elections in November.
The former president and Republican nominee, who will run against Joe Biden in a few months, made his first trip abroad to Saudi Arabia after entering the White House in 2017.
Ties between Washington and Riyadh were strong, starkly contrasting to when President Biden first took office. Although the relationship has stabilized in recent years, Trump has accused the Biden administration of pushing Saudi Arabia away from the West and towards China.
China brokered a deal between Saudi Arabia and Iran to restore ties last year.
The Biden administration has also accused Saudi Arabia of “siding with Russia” and purposefully increasing oil output to benefit Republicans during last year’s midterm elections. They have since backtracked and voiced support for Saudi Arabia’s role in energy markets and for efforts to end fighting in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine.
“They’re [Saudi Arabia] not with us anymore,” Trump said in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek. “They’re with China. But they don’t want to be with China. They want to be with us.”
Trump placed blame on the Obama administration as well. Former President Barack Obama was seen as turning a cold shoulder to the Sunni world, particularly Saudi Arabia, in favor of easing pressure on Iran.
TRUMP ALSO PRAISED SAUDI ARABIA’S CROWN PRINCE MOHAMMED BIN SALMAN, REVEALING THAT THE TWO HAD SPOKEN WITHIN THE LAST SIX MONTHS.
In his interview, Trump said he was not worried that increasing oil and gas production in the US would irk Saudi Arabia or MBS. “HE LIKES ME, I LIKE HIM,” TRUMP WAS QUOTED AS SAYING. “THEY’RE ALWAYS GOING TO NEED PROTECTION… THEY’RE NOT NATURALLY PROTECTED.”

US STATE DEPARTMENT APPROVES SALE OF SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM TO SAUDI ARABIA

The State Department has approved the possible sale of RE-3A Tactical Airborne Surveillance System Aircraft Modernization and related equipment to Saudi Arabia for an estimated $582 million.
According to a statement from the Pentagon, Saudi Arabia had requested to buy: Seven Embedded Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System (GPS/INS) (EGI) security devices, Airborne, with Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module (SAASM) or M-Code capability, and five L3Harris BlackRock Communications Intelligence Sensor Suites.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving Saudi Arabia’s surveillance capability to counter current and future regional threats, strengthen its homeland defense, and improve interoperability with systems operated by US forces and other Gulf Region partners,” the statement said.
Saudi Arabia will have no difficulty absorbing these systems into its armed forces, the Pentagon said. The principal contractor will be Texas-based L3 Technologies and implementation of the proposed sale will not require any additional US government or contractor representatives to be sent to Saudi Arabia.
Bilateral ties between the US and Saudi Arabia go back almost 80 years. The State Department says both countries have a common interest in preserving the GULF REGION’S STABILITY, SECURITY AND PROSPERITY and “consult closely on a wide range of regional and global issues.

The turbulent relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia appears to have stabilized in recent months, culminating in last week’s positive comments by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about the importance of the bilateral ties.
MBS, the 38-year-old Saudi leader, chose to speak in English during his first interview with a Western outlet since 2019. This allowed millions of Americans to hear from the crown prince and debunk several myths often believed in the West.
