NUCLEAR WARNING ISSUED OVER CHINESE ARSENAL

China’s nuclear weapons stockpile is growing rapidly and the country may have deployed nuclear warheads for the first time, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) warned in a new report.

China expanded its nuclear forces from approximately 410 warheads in January 2023 to about 500 by January of this year, said the institute in its annual report on global security and armaments, published Monday, numbers roughly consistent with Pentagon estimates released in October.

And in a first for the East Asia country, “China may also now be deploying a small number of warheads on missiles during peacetime,” SIPRI wrote, estimating two dozen such warheads are currently deployed.

In terms of size, China’s nuclear stockpile is a distant third compared to Russia and the U.S. whose thousands of warheads apiece comprise nearly 90 percent of the world’s total. The U.S. and Russia also account for nearly all of the world’s strategically deployed weapons.

Most of the nine nations known to possess nuclear weapons are either building out their nuclear arsenals or have plans to do so, according to Hans Kristensen, an associate senior fellow with the institute and director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists (FAS).

Asked about SIPRI’s estimates Monday during the Chinese foreign ministry’s regular press conference, spokesperson Lin Jian referred the reporter to China’s 2019 white paper on defense. The document stresses that China maintains a no-first-use policy and restricts its nuclear capabilities to “the minimum level required for national security.”

Lin took aim at Washington’s nuclear policies, which had a “serious impact” on global stability.

“If you are truly interested in issues about strategic security, I would also recommend that you turn your attention to the U.S.’s heavy investment in upgrading its nuclear triad, and increase in nuclear-sharing and extended deterrence.

China’s Foreign Ministry didn’t immediately respond to a written request for comment.

The SIPRI report follows a senior White House aide Pranay Vaddi’s warning last week that China, Russia, and North Korea are “all expanding and diversifying their nuclear arsenals at a breakneck pace.”

If this continues, Vaddi said the U.S. should be prepared to deploy more strategic nuclear weapons.

The gross number of the world’s nuclear weapons is declining amid Russia’s and the U.S.’s disassembly of their retired warheads.

However, this is coinciding with a rise in the proportion of functional nuclear weapons in reserves, SIPRI Director Dan Smith said.

“While the global total of nuclear warheads continues to fall as Cold War-era weapons are gradually dismantled, regrettably we continue to see year-on-year increases in the number of operational nuclear warheads,” the institute quoted him as saying.

China has been expanding its nuclear arsenal “faster than any other country” in recent months, an annual report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has claimed. Beijing has supposedly added 90 warheads to its inventory since January 2023.

The document does note, however, that other nuclear-armed nations have also been modernizing their weapons of mass destruction and ramping up the number of operational nuclear warheads at their disposal.

According to the SIPRI report published on Sunday, the US and Russia are by far the largest nuclear powers, possessing nearly 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons.

However, China is “expanding its nuclear arsenal faster than any other country,” according to Hans M. Kristensen, associate senior fellow with SIPRI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Program. SIPRI’s findings indicate that Beijing’s nuclear arsenal grew from 410 to 500 warheads between January 2023 and January 2024.

A separate report by the US Department of Defense last October concluded that China “possessed more than 500 operational nuclear warheads as of May 2023 – on track to exceed previous projections.” The Pentagon predicted at the time that this number would likely exceed 1,000 by 2030.

SIPRI claims that, “for the first time, China may also now be deploying a small number of warheads on missiles during peacetime.” While Beijing allegedly has 24 nuclear warheads on high operational alert, that number stands at more than 1,700 each in the case of the US and Russia.

The report concludes that “China could potentially have at least as many intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) as either Russia or the USA by the turn of the decade, although its stockpile of nuclear warheads is still expected to remain much smaller than the stockpiles of either of those two countries.”

In an interview with The Telegraph on Sunday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg revealed that member states were discussing the removal of more nuclear-capable missiles from storage and placing them on standby. He cited perceived threats emanating from Russia and China, insisting that the US-led military bloc needed to send a clear message regarding its own nuclear capabilities to Moscow and Beijing.

NATO THREATENING GLOBAL PEACE AND STABILITY – CHINA. FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN LIN JIAN HAS URGED THE US-LED MILITARY BLOC TO STOP “MESSING UP” EUROPE AND THE ASIA-PACIFIC

NATO is a threat to global peace and stability because of its “deep-rooted Cold War mentality and ideological bias,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Monday. 

Lin was asked by Bloomberg at a daily briefing to comment on recent reports that the US-led military bloc is planning to sign a cooperation agreement with Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand at the upcoming NATO summit in Washington. 

The spokesperson responded by stating that NATO is a “product of the Cold War and the world’s largest military alliance.” Despite claiming to be a regional and defensive organization, the bloc has continued to “expand its power across borders, break through defense zones, and provoke confrontation,” Lin added.   

These actions, according to the spokesperson, expose NATO’s “deep-rooted Cold War mentality and ideological bias, which is the real source of risk threatening global peace and stability.”  

“NATO should abide by its regional and defensive organization positioning, stop creating tensions in the Asia-Pacific, peddle Cold War thinking and camp confrontation, and stop messing up Europe and trying to mess up the Asia-Pacific,” the spokesman said.  

Lin’s comments come as NATO bolsters its efforts to establish relations with countries across the Asia-Pacific, at the same time claiming it does not seek to formally expand into the region.   

Earlier this year, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg explained that the bloc feels that it must respond to the ever-changing security landscape in Asia, particularly because of alleged Chinese aggression. “This is not about NATO moving into Asia, but instead about the fact that China is coming close to us,” Stoltenberg told attendees at the exclusive Davos gathering in January.  

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Quian responded by calling Stoltenberg’s statements “inappropriate” and described NATO as a “walking war machine” that “brings disorder everywhere.”  

In 2021, the US, UK, and Australia also established the so-called AUKUS security partnership, which aims to help Canberra acquire nuclear-powered submarines. Washington has extended invitations to other countries in the Asia-Pacific, such as Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand, to participate in the project.  

The AUKUS pact has been condemned by Beijing as an attempt to build an “Asia-Pacific version of NATO.” The Chinese Foreign Ministry has warned that such moves only further the “Cold War mentality,” stimulate an arms race, and undermine regional stability and peace. 

Speaking in Hanoi, Vietnam last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin also insisted that NATO’s aspirations in the Asia-Pacific represent a “threat to all countries in the region, including the Russian Federation.” Putin vowed that Moscow will not allow these actions to go unanswered.
