TECH FIRMS HAVE ANNOUNCED THE DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF ROBOTIC SYSTEMS WITH BIOMETRIC CAPABILITIES AIMED AT ENHANCING OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY AND SECURITY SURVEILLANCE.

Hyundai Motor Group, for instance, has CREATED ROBOTICS THAT INTEGRATE FACIAL RECOGNITION FOR SMART BUILDINGS. Similarly, Kody Technolab has deployed surveillance and service robots at the Tuneland Music Festival in India.

In addition, countries like THE UNITED STATES AND CHINA ARE INCORPORATING RIFLE-ARMED ROBOT DOGS INTO THEIR MILITARIES.

Hyundai develops intra-building delivery robot for smart office

Hyundai Motor Group has designed the DAL-e Delivery, an autonomous robot for intra-building delivery. It is equipped with an AI FACE IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM FOR NAVIGATION WITHIN THE SMART OFFICE ENVIRONMENT of Factorial Seongsu in Seoul. THE BIOMETRIC INTEGRATION ALLOWS THE ROBOT TO ENHANCE SECURITY AND EFFICIENCY BY IDENTIFYING DELIVERY RECIPIENTS.

For autonomous navigation, the DAL-e Delivery robot is synced with the building’s elevator and door control system, enabling it to move freely across different floors and rooms. IT IS EQUIPPED WITH AN 11.6-INCH HIGH-RESOLUTION DISPLAY THAT PROVIDES DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT THE SERVICE STATUS TO OPERATORS AND RECIPIENTS.

“With DAL-e’s full-fledged delivery service, we aim to make Factorial Seongsu the first building to apply our Robot Total Solution,” says Dong Jin Hyun, vice president and head of Robotics Lab at Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation.

In its efforts to provide comprehensive robotic solutions integrating various robotic services and facial recognition systems within smart buildings, Hyundai also developed a parking robot. This smart parking control system can simultaneously manage up to 50 parking robots, coordinating movements in tight spaces.

Crowdfunding for personal AI companion robot

After two successful robotic crowdfunding campaigns, Luwu Intelligence has introduced another project: XGO-RIDER, A DESKTOP WHEEL-LEGGED ROBOT. THE MODULE INTEGRATES IMAGE-BASED AI FEATURES SUCH AS GESTURE RECOGNITION, FACE DETECTION, AND SKELETON RECOGNITION USING THE TENSORFLOW-BASED MEDIAPIPE FRAMEWORK.

The XGO-Rider robot leverages the Raspberry Pi CM4 core module to improve personal AI companionship and mobility. The open-sourced robotic platform uses OpenAI’s API for voice-based AI functionalities. “With XGO-Rider, we aim to redefine personal robotics, empowering users to explore new possibilities and interactions in their everyday lives,” says PengFei Liu, chief executive officer of Luwu Intelligence.

Robot with facial recognition at music festival in India

During the recent Tuneland Music Festival in Gandhinagar, India, Kody Technolab deployed two of its robotics -– known as ATHENA AND DASHER — TO HANDLE SECURITY AND SERVICE TASKS, ENSURING THE SAFETY OF MORE THAN 35,000 ATTENDEES.

Athena is equipped with 360-degree cameras that provide high-definition recording coverage of the festival grounds. Its advanced computer vision capabilities enable the robot to capture vehicle plate numbers and associate them with specific locations, facilitating vehicle plate recognition and monitoring of vehicles within its operational area.

ATHENA ALSO INCORPORATES A FACIAL RECOGNITION SYSTEM, according to a post on the Interesting Engineering blog. The lack of clarity on the specific databases used for this purpose is raising privacy and security concerns.

“The deployment of Athena and Dasher at the Tuneland Music Festival is a testament to the VAST POSSIBILITIES THAT ROBOTICS HOLDS FOR IMPROVING BOTH SECURITY AND SERVICE IN PUBLIC SPACES,” says Manav Patel, founder of Kody Technolab Limited.

CHINESE, US MILITARIES ADD NEW ROBOTIC WEAPONS TO THEIR ARSENAL

The Chinese military unveiled the GO2 ROBOTIC WEAPON, A GUN-WIELDING ROBOTIC DOG, during joint military exercises with Cambodia, as reported by CNN. THIS ROBOT DOG IS ARMED WITH AN AUTOMATIC RIFLE MOUNTED ON ITS BACK AND IS ACCOMPANIED BY A SIMILARLY EQUIPPED QUADCOPTER.

In a YouTube video showcasing the Chinese Go2 robot dog, a soldier can be seen controlling it with a handheld device, indicating that human oversight is still required for its operation. Despite their advanced capabilities, both the robotic dog and drone appear to have been modified for consumer products.

The idea of robotic dogs has evolved over time. Boston Dynamics developed the first well-known robotic quadruped, BigDog. This robot was initially created as a mechanical pack animal for the U.S. military, designed to carry heavy loads over challenging terrain.

It is reported that the United States Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) is CURRENTLY TESTING A ROBOTIC DOG EQUIPPED WITH RIFLES. THIS ROBOTIC DOG IS DESIGNED TO AUTONOMOUSLY IDENTIFY TARGETS WITH PERSON RECOGNITION, if not biometrics, and await human confirmation before engaging.

Onyx Industries supplies these robotic dogs and has confirmed their deployment to The War Zone. At present, MARSOC HAS TWO ROBOTIC DOGS EQUIPPED WITH SENTRY GUN SYSTEMS, WHICH ARE DESIGNED TO IMPROVE SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AND ASSIST IN COMBAT BY DETECTING AND ENGAGING TARGETS.

Eric Shell, the head of business development at Onyx Industries, informed The War Zone that these robotic dogs are being utilized in tunnel operations. The model employed for these tasks is THE VISION 60 QUADRUPEDAL UNMANNED GROUND VEHICLE (Q-UGV) developed by Ghost Robotics.

ROBOT DOGS NOW HAVE SNIPER RIFLES

A robot dog armed with a sniper rifle was unveiled this week in Washington, D.C. at the annual meeting of the Association of the United States Army.

The robot, developed by Ghost Robotics, carries a SWORD Defense Systems Special Purpose Unmanned Rifle (SPUR).

“Latest lethality 6.5 #creedmoor sniper payload from @SWORDINT. Check out the latest partner payloads @AUSAorg Wash DC. Keeping US and allied #sof #warfighter equipped with the latest innovations,” Ghost Robotics tweeted Monday, alongside a photo of the “dog.” 

In a Thursday Instagram post, SWORD International called the robot “Warfighters best friend.”

On the SWORD International website, the company explains that the SPUR was “specifically designed to offer precision fire from unmanned platforms such as the Ghost Robotics Vision-60 quadruped.”

“Featuring safe, chamber, clear and fire capabilities that allows for safe and reliable deployment of the weapon system – providing the operator an ability to load and safe the weapon at a distance. These features also provide the operator the ability to clear malfunctions and safely unload the platform prior to recovery. Chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor allows for precision fire out to 1200m, the SPUR can similarly utilize 7.62×51 NATO cartridge for ammunition availability. Due to its highly capable sensors the SPUR can operate in a magnitude of conditions, both day and night,” SWORD International wrote. 

SPUR, it said, is the “future of unmanned weapon systems.” 

According to New Scientist, the robot is part of Ghost Robotics’ Vision series of legged robots. 

In May, the US Air Force said it was testing an unarmed version of the dogs at Florida’s Tyndall Air Force Base.

“People see these robots out walking around and they think this is a fieldable capability, but there is still a lot of development, testing and evaluation that still needs to be done,” Johanna Lewis, Special Programs Division program manager, said in a release detailing the initiative. “Having them just walk around is not what we’re after. We want them to patrol the base using their integrated sensors to provide our forces in the base security operations center with useful, mission-critical data.”

The Pennsylvania-based Ghost Robotics has been building the four-legged Q-UGV (Quadrupedal Unmanned Ground Vehicles) robots since 2015.

While some may worry about a robot done with a lethal sniper rifle that Popular Science reports has been adopted by Homeland Security and Special Operations snipers, Ghost Robotics CEO Jiren Parikh told New Scientist on Thursday that the weapon is “fully controlled by a remote operator.” 

“There is a human controlling the weapon, there is no autonomy or AI,” he assured. 

It was not immediately clear whether the quadrupedal robots and rifles are being sold, but Parikh noted that the robot had been chosen for its ability to maneuver over tricky terrain as its operators remains out of harm’s way.

While reaction to the armed dogs has been mixed, Pentagon policy states that all robotic weapons should be under the control of a human operator. 

That may provide a little comfort to those shocked by these robots.

Saudi Arabia has launched a set of robots equipped with artificial intelligence technology in the Grand Mosque of Mecca, which will help worshippers during their visit to the holy site.

Unveiled over the weekend, the robots will communicate public messages, such as sermons and prayer calls, from the imams and muezzins to pilgrims.

Visitors can use their smartphones to scan the robot’s barcodes to show content such as verses from the Quran and download it on their devices.

They can also interact with the robots via voice commands to obtain general information about the imams and muezzins and their weekly schedules.

Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, the general president of the Two Holy Mosques, said on Friday that the new robots were launched as part of the “smart campus project, in accordance with VISION 2030 and the Presidential Strategic Plan 2024, which aims to provide maximum services to visitors to the two holy mosques”.

According to Saudi Arabia, VISION 2030, which was launched in 2016, is aimed at opening up the country, privatising parts of the economy, reducing subsidies, attracting investors and weaning dependency off oil.

Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia introduced several intelligent robots in the Grand Mosque ahead of the Hajj pilgrimage, including robots specialised in cleaning the floor surface around the Kaaba, the shrine located in the centre of the mosque.
