Story by Rashi Agarwal The pope welcomed over 200 people, including 100 comedians from 15 countries, at the Apostolic Palace TO SPREAD AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT HUMOR AND ITS PLACE IN THE WORLD.

POPE FRANCIS’ “CONCLAVE OF COMEDIANS” INCLUDED WHOOPI GOLDBERG, JIMMY FALLON, CHRIS ROCK, STEPHEN COLBERT, AND CONAN O’BRIEN. GOLDBERG AND LOUIS-DREYFUS WERE SPOTTED SEATED IN THE FRONT ROW ON JUNE 14 AT THE VATICAN EVENT.

The event was jointly organized by the VATICAN’S DICASTERY FOR CULTURE AND EDUCATION AND DICASTERY FOR COMMUNICATION, AND IT AIMS TO “ESTABLISH A LINK” BETWEEN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND COMIC ARTISTS. The focus of the meeting was to “celebrate the beauty of human diversity and TO PROMOTE A MESSAGE OF PEACE, LOVE AND SOLIDARITY.”

The leader of the Catholic Church welcomed the gathering with an uplifting message. He said: “In the midst of so much gloomy news, immersed as we are in many social and even personal emergencies, YOU HAVE THE POWER TO SPREAD PEACE AND SMILES.”

“You unite people, because laughter is contagious,” said the POPE WHO BELIEVES THAT HUMOR CAN OVERCOME “SOCIAL BARRIERS” AND HELP CREATE “CONNECTIONS AMONG PEOPLE”.

“While communication today often generates conflict, you know how to bring together diverse and sometimes contrary realities. How much we need to learn from you!” he added. He also admitted that he “prayed for 40 years for a good sense of humor”, and jokingly asked the massive gathering to “pray for him, not against” – drawing a laugh from the crowd.

“You manage to make people smile even while dealing with problems and events, large and small. You denounce abuses of power; you give voice to forgotten situations; you highlight abuses; you point out inappropriate behavior,” Pope Francis added. He also said it was okay to “laugh at God” in the same way “we play and joke with the people we love.”

Pope concluded his speech by blessing those present and their art. “Continue to CHEER PEOPLE UP, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO FIND IT HARDEST TO LOOK AT LIFE WITH HOPE,” he said. “Help us, with a smile, to see reality with its contradictions, and to DREAM OF A BETTER WORLD!”

Stephen Merchant, writer and director of The Office, was one of only two British comedians among the massive audience, along with Private Eye editor and Have I Got News for You regular Ian Hislop. Catholic comedian Stephen Colbert joked about the invitation on his late night chat show, and said “Pope Francis is going to meet me at the Vatican!” he told his audience. “Am I excited? Is the pope Catholic?”

He also lovingly warned comedian, Chris Rock about the meeting after the infamous Will Smith slap during the Oscars. “CHRIS, PLEASE FOR SAFETY’S SAKE I WOULD JUST KEEP MARY MAGDALENE’S NAME OUT OF YOUR MOUTH. BECAUSE THE POPE WEARS A BIG RING!”
