Saudi Arabia called Saturday on Muslims to sight the crescent moon on the evening of April 8, which will mark the end of Ramadan. The Saudi Supreme Court issued a statement calling on residents to report the moon sighting and notify the respective authority. The sighting can be done with the naked eye or by using binoculars, following which the discovery must be notified to the nearest court or center.
Ramadan in 2024 began on March 11, during which time Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset. The Islamic religion follows the lunar calendar which consists of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. Ramadan falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan.On April 5, millions of Muslims gathered at Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mosque in Mecca for the last Friday prayer of Ramadan – one of the most important dates in the holy month.
Previously, Saudi Arabia announced paid holidays for public and private sector employees to mark Eid al-Fitr. Workers will get five days off from April 9, including the weekend. A range of events, concerts, light shows and fireworks have been planned across the Kingdom.

Millions of Muslims gathered at Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mosque in Mecca for the last Friday prayer of Ramadan – one of the most important dates in the holy month.
On Saturday, the Presidency of Religious Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque announced the successful implementation of their plan for the fourth and final Friday of the holy month, when the corridors of the Prophet’s Mosque were filled early with worshipers from inside and outside the Kingdom.
The 27th night of Ramadan holds great significance for Muslims worldwide. It is known as Laylat al-Qadr, (5) or the Night of Power.
It is considered one of the holiest nights of the year, when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to Prophet Mohammed. Devout Muslims spend this night in prayer and supplication, seeking blessings and forgiveness.

As confirmed by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, employees will enjoy a four-day break from April 8 to 11. Given that the Saudi weekend falls on Friday-Saturday, residents of the Kingdom will effectively enjoy a six-day holiday. Eid al-Fitr signifies the conclusion of Ramadan for Muslims worldwide, initiating days of festivities in the initial period of the subsequent Islamic month, Shawwal.

Muslims around the world will soon mark the nearing of the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and start observing the holiday of Eid al-Fitr. What’s Eid al-Fitr?
It’s an Islamic holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the month when Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset. Ramadan is a time of increased worship, charity, and good deeds. Eid al-Fitr means the feast, or festival, of breaking the fast.
When is Eid al Fitr?
Islam follows a lunar calendar and so Ramadan and Eid cycle through the seasons. This year, the first day of Eid al-Fitr is expected to be on or around April 10; the exact date may vary among countries and Muslim communities.

Flights were overbooked and anxious relatives, weighed down with boxes of gifts, formed long lines at bus and train stations for the journeys.
