Hailstones can have layers of clear and cloudy ice if the hailstone encounters different temperature and liquid water content conditions in the thunderstorm. The conditions experienced by the hailstone can change as it passes horizontally across or near an updraft. The layers, however, do not occur simply due to the hailstone going through up and down cycles inside a thunderstorm. The winds inside a thunderstorm aren’t simply up and down; horizontal winds exist from either a rotating updraft, like in supercell thunderstorms, or from the surrounding environment’s horizontal winds. Hailstones also do not grow from being lofted to the top of the thunderstorm. At very high altitudes, the air is cold enough (below -40°F) that all liquid water will have frozen into ice, and hailstones need liquid water to grow to an appreciable size.

The fall speed of hail primarily depends on the size of the hailstone, the friction between the hailstone and surrounding air, the local wind conditions (both horizontal and vertical), and the degree of melting of the hailstone. Early research assumed that hailstones fell like solid ice spheres and showed very high fall speeds, even for very small hailstones. Very large hailstones (diameters exceeding 4-inches) to fall at over 100 mph. Imagine the speed of 100lb hailstones travelling in excess of 100 mph. ‘10’0 mph. / ‘10’0 lbs.

Most hailstorms are made up of a mix of different sizes, and only the very largest hail stones pose serious risk to people caught in the open. When reporting hail, estimates comparing the hail to a known object with definite size are good, but measurements using a ruler, calipers, or a tape measure are best.

• Tea cup = 3 inches
• Softball = 4 inches
• Grapefruit = 4 1/2 inches

The typical weight range for a single grapefruit is:

Small grapefruit: 0.25 – 0.75 lbs

Medium grapefruit: 0.5 – 1.25 lbs

Large grapefruit: 0.75 – 1.8 lbs

So a petite grapefruit may be just a quarter pound, while a very large, juicy grapefruit could weigh up to 1.8 pounds. The majority fall somewhere in the middle, averaging 0.75 – 1.25 pounds. Thus, approximately 100 ‘grapefruits’ = 100 ‘lb. hailstone’. A hailstone = 100 times the size, weight and volume of an ‘average’ grapefruit. Consider tens of million hailstones, each weighing approximately 100 lbs., hitting cell phone towers, HVAC equipment, power lines, solar panels, satellite ground equipment, emergency equipment and vehicles and other critical infrastructure.

Global Warming Increasing Giant Ice Meteor Strikes

Have you ever heard about large chunks of ice falling from the sky? It’s a fascinating and puzzling phenomenon that scientists are trying to understand. Some people call these ice chunks “ice meteors” or “hydrometeors.” The term megacryometeor was coined in 2002 (Martinez-Frias & Travis 2002) to name large atmospheric ice conglomeration which, despite sharing many textural, hydrochemical and isotopic features detected in large hailstones, are formed under unusual atmospheric conditions which clearly differ from those of the cumulonimbus clouds scenario (i.e. clear-sky conditions). The most impressive events of these ice falls have happened in different parts of the world. In 1995, for example, a massive ice block about the size of a person fell in Zhejiang, China. Witnesses saw three large chunks of ice crash into the fields of Yaodou village, leaving a crater about a meter wide and half a meter deep.

Similar events occurred in Campinas and Itapira, Brazil, in 1997, where two huge ice blocks weighing 50 and 200 kilograms fell from the sky. The atmospheric signatures of these ice blocks were confirmed without a doubt, meaning they did not fall from planes.

Ancient Israel adopted the Babylonian weight talent, but later revised it. The heavy common talent, used in New Testament times, was 58.9 kg (129 lb 14 oz). A Roman talent (divided into 100 librae or pounds) was 11⁄3 Attic talents, approximately 32.3 kg (71 lb 3 oz).

Since the 1950s (1950-2030= ‘80’ YEARS), the number of these ice fall events has increased dramatically all over the world. They’ve been reported in places like Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, India, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Sweden, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In 2005 alone, there were fourteen reported ice fall events, with locations including Japan, The Netherlands, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Spain. These ice blocks varied in size from about half a kilogram to more than 5 kilograms. By April 2006, four documented ice falls had been recorded, including one in India and three in the United States.

1. In April 2006 in California, USA, an ice chunk left a verifiable small impact crater on the ground in Oakland and caused damage to the roof of a gymnasium in Loma Linda.
2. In 2015, Modesto, Calif. witnessed a chunk of ice the size of a basketball hurtling from the sky and smashing through a roof.
3. In 2019, Tully, New York saw a soccer ball-sized chunk of ice fall near a pedestrian.
4. In 2021, a large chunk of ice hit a home in Palm City, Florida.
5. In 2021, Elk Mound, Wis. experienced a large chunk of ice damaging a home in western Wisconsin on a Tuesday morning. According to the resident, the ice chunk struck the house at approximately 8:15 a.m. and went through the roof, landing in their bedroom.
6. In 2022, Diamond Bar, Calif. faced massive chunks of ice crashing through a family’s home roof while they were watching TV.
7. In 2023, a 20lb chunk hit a Massachusetts home, leaving a hole in the roof.
8. In 2023, Big Bear, California witnessed a large chunk of ice hitting a two-story home.
9. In 2023, Victoria, Australia experienced a large chunk of ice landing on a golf course.
10. In September 2023, a UK woman had a $24,000 hole in her roof caused by a falling block of ice.

These events have puzzled scientists for years. They’ve found that the ice blocks have different textures and chemical compositions, but they’re still trying to understand how these huge ice chunks form and why they fall from the sky. Some theories suggest that tornadoes might carry water up into the atmosphere, where it freezes into ice chunks. Others think there might be other atmospheric processes involved. In Spain, scientists noticed strange changes in the atmosphere before these ice falls happened. The level where the atmosphere meets space, called the tropopause, dropped suddenly. This was accompanied by increased humidity and other unusual conditions. To solve this mystery, scientists need to work together from different fields, like atmospheric science and chemistry. Only then can we understand why these giant ice blocks fall from the sky and why they seem to be happening more often.

Micro-Raman spectroscopic study of extremely large atmospheric ice conglomerations (Megacryometeors)

Abstract

For the first time, micro-Raman spectroscopy has been applied to the structural study of four megacryometeors (extremely large atmospheric ice conglomerations that fall in general under blue-sky atmospheric conditions) that fell in Spain. The Raman spectra taken on the megacryometeor cores have been compared with those obtained from an in situ and online study performed on the crystallization process of water in the laboratory. A detailed comparison of the band profiles obtained made it possible to place the formation of the megacryometeors within a particular range of temperatures (−10 to −20°C), which in turn can be related with the altitude of formation in the atmosphere.
