Health officials in New York City have issued a warning after multiple human infections from rat urine were reported in the city this year.

There were 24 reported cases of the infection, called human leptospirosis, in 2023 – the highest level in a single year – according to the New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

So far in 2024, there have already been six (6) reported cases of leptospirosis. Health officials said in a press release: “For comparison, the average number of locally acquired cases during 2021 to 2023 was 15 per year, and three cases per year during 2001 to 2020. This year, six cases have been reported as of April 10, 2024. “Among the 98 locally acquired cases reported from 2001 to 2023, the median case age was 50 years (range 20 to 80 years), usually male (94 percent) and, reported most often from the (5) Bronx (37), followed by Brooklyn (19), Manhattan (28), Queens (10), and Staten Island (four).”

Those infected by exposure to rat urine often show symptoms including fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, conjunctival suffusion, jaundice, and rash, officials said. The infection usually sets in between five to 14 days, but it’s possible for symptoms to last between two to 30 days. If left untreated, leptospirosis could cause kidney failure, meningitis, liver damage, or respiratory distress.

A total of six (6)  people have died from leptospirosis from 2001 to 2023 in New York City, the department said.

Health officials said: “In NYC, locally acquired cases typically have a history of a residential or occupational exposure to rat urine or environments (including soil and water) and materials contaminated with rat urine (e.g. handling trash bags or bins containing food waste). “Person-to-person transmission is rare. The NYC Health Department conducts inspections and works with property owners to remediate rat conditions if indicated.”

However officials warned leptospira bacteria are very sensitive to freezing temperatures. They said: “The cold winters of NYC likely limit the extent to which leptospires can survive in the environment. However, excessive rain and unseasonably warm temperatures, factors associated with climate change, may support the persistence of leptospires in more temperate areas like NYC.”

50% of the locally acquired cases reported in the city in 2023 occurred between June and October when rain and warm weather is common, the health department said. According to officials, cases of leptospirosis must be reported to the NYC Health Department within 24 hours.

This comes as New York lawmakers have proposed rules to humanely drive down the population of rats and other rodents in the city through the use of birth control. City Council Member Shaun Abreu proposed a city ordinance last week that would establish a pilot program for controlling the millions of rats lurking in subway stations and empty lots by using birth control instead of lethal chemicals. Abreu, chair of the Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Management, said the contraceptives also are more ethical and humane than other methods. The contraceptive, called ContraPest, is contained in salty, fatty pellets that are scattered in rat-infested areas as bait. It works by targeting ovarian function in female rats and disrupting sperm cell production in males, The New York Times reported.

Mayor Eric Adams also hired a “rat czar” last year tasked with battling the detested rodents in an effort to control the city’s rat population.
