An expert has warned of the potentially global impacts of the current measles outbreak sweeping the US as children across the country fight the infection. Superintendent pharmacist at Chemist Click, Abbas Kanani, warned of the concerning low vaccination rates in some US states, particularly Florida, which is experiencing the measles outbreak particularly badly.

He stressed the importance of increasing childhood MMR vaccines as the only way to mitigate against the “serious problems” caused by measles. He told Daily Express US: “Measles is an infection that can spread to others very easily and can cause serious problems in some people. It spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and having the MMR vaccine is the best way to prevent it.”

Ignoring the increasing cases could see the world sleepwalking into a “global resurgence” of the potentially deadly infection, according to Kanani. He said: “We are currently seeing a global resurgence of the infection due to low vaccination rates and an increase in travel post-pandemic.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), measles is so highly contagious that if one person contracts it, nine out of 10 people around them will also become infected if they are not vaccinated. Kanani reiterated this, once again warning that nothing will stop the spread of measles other than the MMR vaccine, which will be instrumental in mitigating the “global resurgence.” He said: “Travelling may increase the risk of getting measles. It is likely it will continue to spread amongst those who are not protected with vaccinations for measles-mumps-rubella, or MMR.”

This comes just days after the CDC issued an alarming warning as the number of confirmed cases of measles in the US skyrocketed in the first three months of 2024. As of this week, there have been 58 cases this year so far. This is the same number that was seen in the whole of 2023. Of the 58 cases in 2024, 93 percent were linked to international travel, which Kanani reaffirmed as a major issue. Most cases are seen in children aged one and above, who are yet to recieve their MMR vaccinations. The CDC responded: “Healthcare providers should ensure children are current on routine immunizations, including MMR.” As of March 14, measles has been detected in 17 states, with this number expected to grow as the highly contagious infection spreads between unvaccinated individuals.
