As a teenager, Mohammed bin Salman was obsessed by powerful men like Alexander the Great. No matter that he was so far down the line of succession that his elder half-brothers and cousins would guffaw at the prospect of him becoming king (or becoming anything), while sending him to the shop to pick up cigarettes.

Later, as he forged alliances, amassed a huge fortune and outmaneuvered his rivals in the royal family, MBS, as he’s known, reflected on the people who had “Great” attached to their names. They didn’t get the moniker because of kindness or beneficence. These men were feared. They certainly didn’t take orders from self-appointed global superpowers … and they ruthlessly removed anyone who’d dare challenge their mandate. That was the era of Sun Kings and Emperors. After the brutal murder of Jamal Khashoggi in 2018 by assassins working directly for Mohammed bin Salman, many thought the Saudi crown prince’s meteoric rise would stall and crash into the bottom of the sea. World leaders shunned him, and columnists saw the rest of his actions — his deep involvement in Yemen’s civil war, his jailing of activists, the Ritz “sheikhdown” — with blood-tinted spectacles. His work opening Saudi Arabia’s economy and public society up to women was seen as hollow because of a crackdown on women activists.

The Dissident

Joe Biden’s team, in one of its first foreign policy moves, announced that the U.S. president would only meet with his counterpart, MBS’s elderly father. MBS was toast, pundits said. Surely, the Saudi royal family would do the right thing and appoint a less mercurial, less ambitious successor…

Enter 2022. Going back on his promise, Biden was forced to fly to Saudi Arabia and “fist bump” MBS, as oil prices soared following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Despite this show of obeisance, MBS ignored Biden’s pleas and went ahead and cut production, further driving up prices.

My take on MBS is he is:

Here to stay and no one is going to remove him easily, no matter how much it upsets people that he’ll never be held accountable for the murder of Khashoggi. Able to strategically outwit democratically elected leaders by his sheer totality of power and the fact that he is set to be a world leader for decades. The harbinger of a new era of disintegrating alliances, especially involving countries that feel they were treated as inferiors to world powers.

Documentary: Satan, The Antichrist and The One-World Government

One of my favorite history books of all time is called Beware of Small States, which is the story of Lebanon as viewed through the prism of the Arab-Israeli conflicts. The title comes from a purported quote from a Russian anarchist who warned in 1870 how small states were destabilizing Europe, from Belgium and the Balkans, to the Baltic. Beware of small kingdoms and the unexpected power they might wield in the future.

Watching Saudi Arabia forge its own path, against the interests of both Russia and the United States, is both fascinating and alarming. Vladimir Putin craves for the Gulf states to join his axis of villainous nations like Belarus, as he wages war against Ukraine. The U.S. would rather MBS march in lock-step with the Western pressure to ostracize the Putin government. U.S. politicians have suggested cutting ties with Saudi Arabia unless it falls into line, which  feels like the raspy cough of an aging nation state as its power seeps away. Biden’s staff went so far as to say they’d “reassess” the relationship with the Kingdom, which sounds a lot like the time Biden said he wouldn’t meet with MBS anymore, and then he did …

The Saudi prince: how dangerous is MBS?

And if you want to see just how little the Khashoggi murder affected MBS’s long-term staying power, take a glance at the upcoming Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh (the sixth one – titled Investing in Humanity: Enabling a New Global Order). Everyone is going for one reason: money. Saudi’s coffers are bursting with cash and American businessmen would love to take it off their hands and put it to work in places like … America.

One of the keynote speeches feels to me a great summary of how Saudi sees the world – it’s the lens of global capitalism much more than politics and diplomacy. That’s something Justin Scheck and I heard time and again about MBS. He would much rather be looking at business deals than engage in old-fashioned diplomacy. In these strange times, the world needs to be wary of small kingdoms, and the unexpected power they might wield in the future. Saudi Arabia’s petrodollars, and the power that buys, have made the Kingdom – and MBS – a major global player.  At Whale Hunting, we believe money is the closest thing to liquid power, and it can have amazing, frightening consequences around the globe. The C.I.A. may have a $15 billion budget, but that money is routed through a slow-moving bureaucracy. MBS can unleash billions of dollars with a flick of his wrist.

So to assess power, we have to ask: Is MBS the richest man in the world?

For our Brazen Rich List, our attempt to find the world’s richest people with hidden wealth, we’ve looked at kings, gamblers, and crypto bros, among others. We concluded that Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan, the now deceased former president of the U.A.E., was as rich as Croesus, but not quite the top contender. We also looked at Putin, who controls an enormous amount of money, but nothing like the Gulf rulers. Xi Jinping doesn’t quite cut it, though he’s among the most consequential people living today.

The Seven Kings of Saudi Arabia

What’s different about MBS is the nature of his power, which is complete and unchecked. There is no rival to the throne. When King Salman dies someday, MBS will become king, and if he even appoints a crown prince, the role will probably be filled by a loyal and unambitious figure. Everyone knows that MBS went on a spending spree after he became Crown Prince, buying a yacht, a French palace, and a supposed Da Vinci painting. But that’s really pocket change compared to the untold wealth he now controls via opaque vehicles belonging to himself and his father directly. And that’s not even to mention the gushers of cash MBS can access via state entities such as the Public Investment Fund (PIF), run by his close associate Yasir al Rumayan.

It’s tricky to put an exact figure on MBS’s wealth, but it’s fair to say there’s nothing he can’t buy. PIF alone has more than $600 billion under management, and the size of King Salman’s direct estate, added to that of MBS, is edging into hundreds of billions, according to sources we spoke to for Blood and Oil and people I’ve spoken to more recently.

Can we count PIF assets as MBS’s personal wealth? In the sense he can do whatever he likes with the fund, without oversight, the answer is: “Yes!” While he wouldn’t likely start pilfering the fund for personal purchases, he does have absolute control of them. In the 21st century, sovereign wealth funds are as much a strategic tool as a means for making money. Consider PIF’s decision to back investing novice Jared Kushner’s fund to the tune of $2 billion (which we broke in our first-ever edition of Whale Hunting and was later confirmed by the New York Times) — that’s not based on track record, it’s about hedging bets and political access.

Unlike Putin, MBS family runs the country absolutely, so there’s little chance of losing power – or control of this cash. As we explained with Putin, the reason he might have to cling on to power so tightly is the moment someone else is in charge, his hold on the money could vaporize and he’s left with little assets held directly in his name. A more powerful person could requisition those funds. So, we’d wager MBS is the richest person we’ve found in the world today, so far. And, perhaps, he’s as close to “Great,” in the historical sense of the word, as his teenage self could ever have dreamed.

Some other fun MBS tidbits to help US diplomats and others negotiate with him:

MBS is obsessed with electronic dance music and has the best DJ equipment in his palaces and on his yacht. Maybe send DJ David Solomon (who also works at Goldman Sachs) to negotiate with him? He has a famous yacht, the Serene (which has a cameo in both “Billion Dollar Whale” AND “Blood and Oil“). But it’s only the lead ship of a flotilla of yachts and service ships that move in lockstep, as a kind of floating palace navy. The captain of Serene likes to be called “commodore.” On the Serene is a secret room (in the old helicopter hangar) that staff are not allowed to go to. Hint: It has stripper poles. In 2017, Serene ran aground on some reefs in the Red Sea. MBS cares about his looks. I’ve heard from multiple sources that he had hair implants awhile back, and more recently his stomach was stapled. MBS is famously a voracious consumer of fast-food, so this is the way to have the best of both worlds. He likes video games. His childhood friends, who are still with him often, like to play PUBG (“Player Unknown Battleground,” for the uninitiated) on a big screen together late into the night. One way to build rapport: PrezBiden123 and CP_MBS could game together? Some of MBS’s personal holdings are traceable to companies he started early in his career, when he was pondering becoming a tycoon rather than a king. Commentary; the rider is the ‘beast’ or ‘antichrist’. His being clothed in white suggests ‘3’ false righteousness, false peace and false authority. He has a bow, but no arrows. He rules with lies and threats, but no military or arms. He conquers and subjugates, not with force but with ‘5’ lies, deception, false covenants and false agreements and false promises. He is the world’s greatest ‘political’ leader and deceiver. He is the one who ‘confirms the false covenant of seven years with Jacob’ which starts the tribulation. You should know now of who I speak. His ‘crown’ represents authority, rulership and position. It even literally represents his ‘position’ as Crown Prince, once the tribulation begins. My discernment is that the ‘white horse upon which the Prince sits’ is symbolically a white Arabian stallion.
