It’s an age-old question: Will robots one day take over the world?

According to one decorated scientist, the possibility could greatly increase in just a few years, Knewz.com has learned. According to The Daily Mail, Ben Goertzel, who coined the phrase “artificial general intelligence,” or AGI, AI is on verge of an exponential “intelligence explosion.” “It seems quite plausible we could get to human-level AGI within, let’s say, the next three to eight years,” Goertzel said at a summit on AGI this month.

“Once you get to human-level AGI within a few years you could get a radically superhuman AGI,” Goertzel added. While Goertzel, a Ph.D. mathematician and futurist, admitted he “could be wrong,” he said that the only thing that could stop a runaway, ultra-advanced AI — which would exceed its human counterparts — would be if the robots’ “own conservatism” called for caution.

AI has been a topic of debate for the last couple of years. However, it’s not yet gotten to a level that will threaten humans. But Goertzel sees it coming, according to his comments during the “2024 Beneficial AI Summit and Unconference” last week. “There are known unknowns and probably unknown unknowns,” Goertzel said during the meeting in Panama City, Panama. “No one has created human-level artificial general intelligence [AGI] yet; nobody has a solid knowledge of when we’re going to get there.”

Goertzel said the evolution of AI is an unstoppable force. “My own view is once you get to human-level AGI, within a few years you could get a radically superhuman AGI,” he said Goertzel has made other ominous predictions concerning AI in the past. For example, in May of last year, he said AI has the potential to replace 80 percent of human jobs “in the next few years.” However, he did not see the prospect as a negative, stating that humans could “find better things to do with their life than work for a living.”

The threat of AI has caught the attention of many iconic world figures.

Pope Francis, for example, said he has been victimized by it.

As Knewz.com reported on January 25, the pope briefly mentioned his plight with AI.

“Fake news… can employ ‘deepfakes,’ namely the creation and diffusion of images that appear perfectly plausible but false,” the Pope said. “I, too, have been an object of this.” Francis did not provide more details, but Reuters noted a phony photo of him wearing a white puffer coat made the rounds of social media last year. The BroBible website says it was created on the Midjourney website.

The Pope wrote a three-page message for the Roman Catholic Church “World Day of Social Communications,” Sunday, May 12. Francis admitted some people have made “catastrophic predictions” about what A.I. could do. He urged Catholics to set those aside. But he added “the technology of simulation” can twist reality through images, narratives and audio.

It “can be useful in certain specific fields,” Francis wrote, “but it becomes perverse when it distorts our relationship with others and with reality.”

Scientists take 10-policy pledge to avert AI bio-weapon risk

There are many ways the use of AI could go wrong. For instance, AI might help military operatives with battle plans. However, some restrictions have been put in place to address the potential misuse of artificial intelligence.

Over 100 scientists have collectively committed to complying with 10 policies to avoid using AI in bioweapons. These policies are aimed at preventing the creation of AI-powered bioweapons. Some notable participants include Ivy League researchers and Microsoft’s Chief Scientific Officer. The agreement stemmed from a 2023 University of Washington summit. The goal is to emphasize proactive risk management to mitigate the risks associated with AI technologies, which can be exploited, intentionally or otherwise, to cause harm.

The signed agreement, published on Friday, focuses on establishing guiding principles rather than imposing bans on artificial intelligence usage. Instead, it outlines measures to prevent unintended DNA disasters. The core policies include scientists’ commitment not to engage in research that could lead to “overall harm” or misuse. Additionally, they pledge to only use DNA services from providers equipped with good screening measures. 

These measures include detecting hazardous biomolecules before they are manufactured.  They aim to ensure that AI-powered research remains within ethical boundaries and prevents unintended consequences.

Furthermore, the agreement says that scientists should assess safety risks before releasing AI-powered software and participate in “red team” practices. Red team practices involve simulated exercises to identify potential weaknesses in screening protocols. These practices will detect and stop any scenario that poses a potential threat when it comes to AI bioweapons. The simulation shows that you can never be too careful but always cautious.

A global pact

The policies resonate with many, as individual scientists from institutions such as Harvard and others in countries like Germany and Japan have endorsed the agreement. Notably, Microsoft’s Chief Scientific Officer, Eric Horvitz, along with professionals from companies like ProteinQure, Menten AI, and Profluent Bio, have also signed on.

While the agreement is optional and signifies individual scientist commitments, there is hope that institutions and colleagues may collectively adopt the outlined policies. This new optional agreement comes after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said last year that AI-powered bioweapons were a “medium-term” risk but just a few years away. “Certain steps in bioweapons production involve knowledge that can’t be found on Google or in textbooks and requires a high level of expertise,” remarked Amodei. “We found that today’s AI tools can fill in some of these steps.”

Comprehensive US federal laws on AI usage are still in development. The White House proposed an AI Bill of Rights blueprint in 2022. Additionally, according to the US National Conference of State Legislatures, 18 states and Puerto Rico approved various laws or resolutions surrounding AI use last year. 

The full agreement is called Responsible AI x Biodesign under the title “Community Values, Guiding Principles, and Commitments for the Responsible Development of AI for Protein Design.”
