Natural Disasters World-wide 2024: January 2024 Smashes Global Temperature Records, Continues Climate Alarming Trend

Story by Emma Taylor

January 2024 has set a disconcerting precedent, marking the hottest January on record and continuing an eight-month streak of unprecedented global warmth. According to the World Meteorological Agency, NASA, NOAA, Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, and the Japan Meteorological Agency, last month surpassed all previous records, indicating a worrying trend in the planet’s climate system.

These authoritative bodies report uniformly high temperatures across various regions, with “temperatures above average throughout the Arctic, most of northeastern North America, central Russia, southern and western Asia, Africa, South America, eastern and southeastern Asia and Australia,” as NOAA details. Africa and South America, in particular, experienced their warmest Januarys ever recorded. Additionally, Copernicus’ records show January’s global average temperature was an alarming 1.66°C warmer than the pre-industrial average for January.

The string of record-setting temperatures extends beyond the air to the seas. January 2024 also witnessed record-high monthly global ocean surface temperatures for the tenth consecutive month, with NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) stating, “The average global land and ocean surface temperature was 2.29 degrees F (1.27 degrees C) above the 20th-century average.” This exacerbates concerns over the state of global sea ice, with the Arctic and Antarctic sea ice extents registering below average.

The ongoing El Niño conditions, which emerged in June 2023, are contributing to these temperature anomalies. While there is a likelihood of a transition to ENSO-neutral and even La Niña conditions later in the year, the current state is clearly influencing the global climate significantly.

Experts underline the severity of the situation, with Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, emphasizing, “2024 starts with another record-breaking month – not only is it the warmest January on record, but we have also just experienced a 12-month period of more than 1.5°C above the pre-industrial reference period.”

The global sea surface temperature for January over 60°S–60°N reached a record for January, 0.26°C warmer than the previous warmest January in 2016. Daily sea surface temperatures have even broken the absolute records set in August 2023. Moreover, the past twelve months from February 2023 to January 2024 have been the hottest 12-month period on record, according to NOAA and Copernicus records.

As governments and environmental organizations grapple with these developments, there is a 22% chance that 2024 will rank as the warmest year on record and a 99% chance that it will rank in the top five warmest years on record. This prospect is a glaring reminder of the urgent need for global action to address climate change.

The data signals not only an environmental warning but also holds significant implications for ecosystems and economies globally. Extreme weather events, from flooding in Australia to wildfires in America and Chile, are punctuating this trend with tangible impacts on human lives and livelihoods.

While predictions for the rest of the year remain uncertain, the record warmth of January 2024 sends a clear message: the global community must commit to aggressive measures to curb greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate further harm to the planet. The present trajectory suggests that without substantial intervention, the climate crisis will continue to escalate, with consequences that extend far beyond monthly temperature records.

El Niño will cause record-breaking heat across the world this year

The Caribbean, the Bay of Bengal, the South China Sea and parts of Alaska and the Amazon will have their hottest 12-month period on record this year due to the ongoing El Niño weather pattern, according to a forecast by a climate model.

“These are the places where there will be an elevated risk of extremes, and these extremes are really damaging,” says team member Michael McPhaden at the NOAA Pacific Marine Environment Laboratory in Seattle, Washington.

Earth officially had its warmest January according to data from four separate agencies, the latest month in a string of records following the planet’s hottest year in 2023.

New data confirmed the record. In a report released Wednesday, NOAA found January’s globally averaged temperature was 2.29 degrees Fahrenheit above average. That may not sound like much, but it was slightly warmer than 2016, the previous January record in their dataset dating to 1850.

NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies and the Japan Meteorological Agency also found January 2024 nudged slightly above than both 2016 and 2020 in their datasets dating to the late 19th century. Earlier this month, the European Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) also found January was a global record-setter.

Globally averaged temperature data is synthesized from measurements taken by weather stations, ships, aircraft and satellites.

That makes eight in a row. January was the eighth straight month Earth set a new warm record for that month, a streak that started in June 2023.

That includes its two single hottest months – July and August – as well as the planet’s four most anomalously warm months – September, October, November and December – according to C3S. All of those led to a record-shattering warm year in 2023.

Something strange is happening in the Pacific and we must find out why

“They are damaging to human health and they increase the risks of wildfire. And in the oceans, they increase the risk of marine heatwaves, which are damaging to marine ecosystems, fisheries and corals,” he says.

Global surface temperatures across much of the world are currently at an all-time high. The main reason for this is the warming caused by carbon emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. But on top of this, a strong El Niño phase that began in the middle of 2023 is pushing up temperatures even further.

During El Niño, warm water spreads across the surface of the Pacific Ocean towards South America. This vast area of warm water transfers a lot of ocean heat into the atmosphere, causing surface temperatures to rise.

In the opposite phase, known as La Niña, this process reverses: cold water spreads across the surface of the Pacific away from South America, absorbing heat from the atmosphere and reducing surface temperatures.

This means the global average surface temperature usually hits record levels during El Niño phases and then declines during La Niña.

McPhaden and his colleagues used a computer model that accounts for aerosol pollution and volcanic eruptions in addition to El Niño to try to forecast where in the world record heat will occur. Their regional forecasts are for the average surface temperature over the period from July 2023 to June 2024.

“There’s a real value to having this kind of a warning, even if it’s not precisely timed to a particular season,” says McPhaden. “It gives you some lead time for preparing on how best to protect lives, property, living marine resources and economic development.”

The team considered two scenarios: a strong El Niño and a more moderate one. It is now clear that we are seeing a strong El Niño – in fact, it is likely to be among the top five strongest El Niños since 1950, says McPhaden.

Is climate change accelerating and is it worse than we expected?

For this strong El Niño scenario, the team forecasts that the global average surface temperature between July 2023 to June 2024 will be between 1.1 and 1.2°C higher than the 1951 to 1980 average.

This is equivalent to 1.4 to 1.5°C above the 1850 to 1900 average, New Scientist calculates, which is regarded as the pre-industrial benchmark. This suggests the model is underestimating temperatures, as this level has already been exceeded. From January 2023 to January 2024, the average global surface temperature was more than 1.5°C above the 1850 to 1900 average, and during January 2024 it was 1.7°C above this level.

Temperature records have already been smashed during the ongoing El Niño, especially in the tropics, says Maximiliano Herrera, an independent climatologist who tracks extreme temperatures. “This is a super one,” he says. “The record heat is persistent and inescapable.”

Make Your (7) Decision for Christ NOW!!!!!!! Time is Up!!!!!!!

Jesus Christ’s Offer of Salvation:

The ABCs (7) of Salvation through Jesus Christ (the Lamb)

  1. (7) Admit/Acknowledge/Accept that you are sinner. Ask (7) God’s forgiveness and repent of your sins.

. . . “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23).

. . . “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one.” (Romans 3:10).

. . . “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” (1 John 1:8).

B. Believe Jesus is Lord. Believe that (7) Jesus Christ is who He claimed to (7) be; that He was both fully God (7) and fully man and that we are (7) saved through His death, burial, and resurrection. (7) Put your trust in Him as your (7) only hope of salvation. Become a son (7) or daughter of God by receiving Christ. (7777777) 7×7

. . . “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (John 3:15-17). For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).

C. Call upon His name, Confess (7) with your heart and with your lips (7) that Jesus is your Lord and Savior.

. . . “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10).

. . . “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” (John 1:8-10).

. . . “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (John 2:2).

. . . “In this was manifested the love of god toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.” (1 John 4:9, 14-15).

. . . “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” (Romans 5:8-10).

. . . “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23).

. . . “Jesus saith unto them, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6).

. . . “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth.” (Romans 1:16).

. . . “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts: 4:12).

. . . “Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth for there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:4-6).

. . . “For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:9).

. . . “But as many as received him, to them gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” (John 1:12).
