Texas Fire ‘Looks Like Armageddon’

Story by Rob Quinn Newsr

With multiple fires raging in the Texas Panhandle, Gov. Greg Abbott has declared a state of emergency in 60 counties. Multiple communities have been evacuated and mandatory evacuation orders are in place in Moore and Potter counties, reports the Amarillo Globe-News. In Hemphill County, the sheriff’s office issued a mandatory evacuation notice but later advised residents in Canadian, the county seat, to shelter in place because of road closures. The largest fire, the Smokehouse Creek Fire, had burned at least 250,000 acres by Tuesday afternoon, making it the fifth-largest wildfire in state history, CNN reports.

The rapidly expanding fire, which started Monday afternoon, has already burned a larger area than all the state’s wildfires last year combined. Melanie McQuiddy, manager of a motel in Canadian, tells CNN that she managed to get out of town as the fire approached. “It looks like Armageddon. All the trees are covered in white ash,” she says. Her daughter Brooke McQuiddy says friends who were stuck in town were told to shelter at the high school. “They are at the high school football field where multiple residents are together and are literally watching the flames start to take over Canadian,” she says.

Texans are urged to limit activities that could create sparks and take precautions to keep their loved ones safe,” Abbott said. “I also want to thank the brave firefighters and first responders who are working tirelessly to protect their fellow Texans.” Warm temperatures and low humidity have made conditions ripe for wildfires across the region, the AP reports. Oklahoma Emergency Management spokesperson Keli Cain told CNN Tuesday evening that evacuation orders were issued in Roger Mills and Ellis counties after a Texas fire jumped the state line.

Raging wildfire now largest in Texas history with deteriorating conditions expected

Story by Lauren Sforza The Hill

The raging wildfire that tore across the Texas Panhandle this week has now become the largest in state history, and deteriorating conditions are expected to continue in the state.

A string of wildfires has blown through the Lone Star State in recent days, prompting evacuations and the destruction of homes and buildings. Texas A&M Forest Service reported Thursday that the largest fire, the Smoke House Creek Fire, has grown to an estimated 1,075,000 acres in Hutchinson County and is only 3 percent contained.

It has merged with another fire, named the 687 Reamer Fire, the forest service said. Some of the fires have also spread into Oklahoma.

The forest service confirmed to The Hill that the Smoke House Creek Fire is now the largest in state history. The forest service’s website currently lists the 2006 wildfire East Amarillo Complex in Hutchinson County as the largest in state history, burning 907,245 acres at the time.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) issued an emergency declaration for 60 counties earlier this week, warning that dry and windy conditions could worsen the situation. The Associated Press reported that Tom Ray, the mayor of Fritch located north of Amarillo, said an estimated 40 to 50 homes were destroyed on the southern edge of the town.

At least one fatality in Hutchinson County has been confirmed, multiple outlets reported. CNN reported that the family of the victim, 83-year-old Joyce Blankenship, confirmed she died at her home in Stinnett.

“The house was gone,” Nathan Blankenship, the grandson of the victim, told CNN. “There was no way she could’ve gotten out.”

The AP noted that firefighters battling the blazes could see some relief from the tough conditions Thursday, as the daily forecast predicting cooler temperatures, rain and snow in some areas could allow firefighters to make some progress.

However, that window is expected to be short lived before the rising temperatures and increased wind are forecast to return this weekend.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at Wednesday’s press briefing that President Biden has been receiving updates about the wildfires. She said the White House and federal officials are in contact with state and local officials, adding that the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Forest Service are providing assistance to the state.

“We are grateful for the brave firefighters and first responders who are working to protect people and save lives. And we urge everyone in the affected area to remain vigilant and heed the warnings of local officials, especially those who have been ordered to evacuate,” she said.

Texas wildfires destroy grain and cattle, agriculture commissioner says

Tom Polansek Thu, February 29, 2024 at 11:57 AM CST Reuters

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Wildfires raging in the Texas Panhandle have destroyed grain in storage bins and likely killed tens of thousands of livestock, state Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said in an interview on Thursday.

A blaze, dubbed the Smokehouse Creek fire, is the largest in Texas history and burning grazing lands covered with years of grass that are helping to fuel the fire, Miller said.

“It’s almost like gasoline when it goes up,” he said. “We have now lost over a million acres.”

The wildfire, raging northeast of Amarillo since Monday, had blackened 850,000 acres (344,000 hectares) of grasslands and timber as of Wednesday, the Texas A&M Forest Service reported.

The state does not know exactly how many cattle have died, but “the number is going to be very large,” Miller said.

“We’ve lost probably tens of thousands of head of livestock, cattle mainly,” he said.

Nationwide, the cattle herd declined to its lowest level in more than seven decades as of Jan. 1, after drought reduced the amount of pastureland available for grazing.

Texas is the nation’s biggest cattle producer, and Miller said more than 85% of the state’s herd is in the Panhandle. Most are in feedlots and dairies that are unscathed, though, he said.

Losses will be devastating to individual producers but not be large enough to “drastically change the overall production numbers of cattle in the United States,” Miller said.

Texas had 12 million cattle at the start of the year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Feed supplies are scarce for surviving cattle because the fire destroyed grazing lands and bins holding crops like wheat and corn, he said.

“It looks like a moonscape up there,” Miller said. “There’s absolutely zero vegetation. The cattle that do survive, they have absolutely nothing to eat.”

The state is collecting donations to help farmers bury dead animals, erect barns and buy new fencing materials, Miller said.

Livestock supply stations have also been set up to collect donations of fencing supplies and hay, said Ben Weinheimer, president of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association.

“Cattle producers are doing everything in their power to protect their livestock while also protecting their families,” he said.

America’s main nuclear weapons plant evacuated as wildfires rage

Metro

America’s main nuclear weapons plant was evacuated last night as fierce wildfires burnt nearby. Pantex, the centre for assembling and disassembling the US nuclear arsenal, said last night that it had shut down operations until further notice. After fires nearby were brought under control, it reopened this morning for ‘normal day shift operations’ with all personnel asked to report for duty

Last night the company warned the fire near Pantex is ‘not contained’ saying: ‘Response efforts have shifted to evacuations. There is a small number of non-essential personnel sheltered on-site.’ Strong winds, dry grass and unusually warm temperatures fuelled the blaze in the rural Panhandle of Texas

Republican governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for 60 counties yesterday as the largest fire burned nearly 400 square miles. Pantex, near Amarillo, has been the main assembly and disassembly site for atomic bombs in the States since 1975

It assembled the last new bomb in 1991, but in the time since it has dismantled thousands of weapons. Governor Abbot did not say what had caused the blaze but said Texans ‘are urged to limit activities that could create sparks and take precautions to keep their loved ones safe’

Residents were also warned to evacuate, with buses put on for some to go south including those living in Pampa – though they were able to return home last night.

To the west, at least some residents in the small city of Fritch were told to leave their homes n because of another fire that had jumped a motorway. ‘Everything south of Highway 146 in Fritch evacuate now!’ city officials said on Facebook.

Make Your (7) Decision for Christ NOW!!!!!!! Time is Up!!!!!!!

Jesus Christ’s Offer of Salvation:

The ABCs (7) of Salvation through Jesus Christ (the Lamb)

  1. (7) Admit/Acknowledge/Accept that you are sinner. Ask (7) God’s forgiveness and repent of your sins.

. . . “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23).

. . . “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one.” (Romans 3:10).

. . . “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” (1 John 1:8).

B. Believe Jesus is Lord. Believe that (7) Jesus Christ is who He claimed to (7) be; that He was both fully God (7) and fully man and that we are (7) saved through His death, burial, and resurrection. (7) Put your trust in Him as your (7) only hope of salvation. Become a son (7) or daughter of God by receiving Christ. (7777777) 7×7

. . . “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (John 3:15-17). For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).

C. Call upon His name, Confess (7) with your heart and with your lips (7) that Jesus is your Lord and Savior.

. . . “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10).

. . . “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” (John 1:8-10).

. . . “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (John 2:2).

. . . “In this was manifested the love of god toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.” (1 John 4:9, 14-15).

. . . “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” (Romans 5:8-10).

. . . “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23).

. . . “Jesus saith unto them, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6).

. . . “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth.” (Romans 1:16).

. . . “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts: 4:12).

. . . “Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth for there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:4-6).

. . . “For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:9).

. . . “But as many as received him, to them gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” (John 1:12).
