EU must keep its democracy ‘safe and secure,’ von der Leyen says after announcing re-election bid

The bloc must make its democracy “safe and secure” by increasing investments in defence, fighting disinformation and protecting its economy, Ursula von der Leyen told Euronews after announcing her re-election bid.

The German politician confirmed on Monday afternoon her desire to lead the European Commission for another five (5) years. The news caps off weeks of mounting speculation and heats up the presidential race ahead of the elections to the European Parliament.

If re-elected, von der Leyen is determined to make defence one of the most significant and structural priorities of her second mandate. Defence was for years a low-profile policy area in Brussels until Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and forced Europeans to reckon with their shortcomings and weaknesses.

The online surge of misinformation, deep-fakes and unlawful content has also put the bloc on high alert, particularly in the context of elections, where autocratic foreign governments actively seek to influence voters and shape favourable outcomes. “The most important part is to make sure that our democracy is safe and secure,” von der Leyen told Euronews.

Although military decisions remain the exclusive prerogative of member states, von der Leyen’s team is moving to centralise more powers in the industrial side of the defence. A soon-to-be-unveiled strategy, first reported by the Financial Times, will propose new tools to ramp up production, organise common procurement and roll out subsidies. “Europe has gotten stronger because we all understand how important it is to have sound security spending and be able to provide security and to defend ourselves,” von der Leyen said.

“We have to spend more. We have to spend better. And I think we have to spend more European to consolidate our defence industrial base.”

Europe’s goal to boost its defence capabilities has become even more pressing after the recent remarks of Donald Trump, who said that, if elected US president for a second term, he would “encourage” Russia to attack any NATO state that failed to meet the target of spending 2% of their GDP in defence. Trump’s comments triggered a furious reaction from Western leaders and raised fears about the alliance’s long-term viability.

NATO and the EU have 22 members in common and the fate of one is deeply interlinked with the other’s. “The alliance of NATO is of utmost importance for the European Union,” von der Leyen said in her interview with Euronews. “But I think it’s important that we do our own homework, that we fulfil our tasks.”

However, von der Leyen added, security must be seen in an all-encompassing manner. Her presidency has pioneered the concept of “de-risking” to deal with China and introduced far-reaching plans to do away with Russian fossil fuels. “We’re also working hard to have economic security. We’re working hard to have energy security. We have diversified our energy sources and we have massively invested in homegrown renewable energy because this gives us energy independence,” the president told Euronews. “So I see the term of security in a much wider sense.”

Feb 15 (Reuters) – Brussels should incentivise Europe’s defence industry to ramp up production and promote consolidation, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told the Financial Times in an interview on Thursday, warning that the “world has got rougher”.

Proposals in the commission’s plan include using the EU budget to increase financing to supplement joint contracts for weapons signed by member states, as well as guaranteeing that production will be bought, EU officials told FT. “We have a very fragmented defence market and that needs to change,” FT quoted von der Leyen as saying. “What is the competence of the commission? It’s industry. This is our core business. We are an enabler, not a buyer.”

EU approves common defense plan. It will create an EU fighting force. “European Union just approved Strategic Compass.” Strategic Compass is aimed at improving cooperation between existing European militaries.

On Monday, the European Union approved Strategic Compass – a bloc-wide common defense strategy that will create an EU deployment force of 5,000 troops. While such a move is a historic first for the bloc, it is substantially more modest than the EU army proposed by France’s Emmanuel Macron.

The “European Union just approved Strategic Compass,” Latvian FM Edgars Rinkēvičs announced, following a meeting of European defense and foreign ministers in Brussels earlier in the day. The plan provides a “necessary toolbox for the EU to become a real geopolitical defense and security player together with NATO,” he said, and is only the “beginning of the journey” for the bloc’s military future. 

The plan itself has been around since 2020, when it was proposed by the European Council. Since then it has been criticized by those Eastern European countries that prefer to rely on NATO and its US muscle for their defense needs, and by commentators in neutral Ireland, who sought assurances that only peacekeeping missions be undertaken by the bloc, and that the UN be given a central role in decision-making.

However, the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine has hastened the plan’s adoption. In its current form, Strategic Compass is aimed at improving cooperation between existing European militaries, boosting cooperation with NATO, consolidating cyber-defense capabilities, and facilitating joint investment in research and development. 

However, it also facilitates the creation of a 5,000-strong “rapid deployment capacity” of EU troops, marking the first step taken by the bloc toward creating a common military. This step toward militarization is significant, especially as it comes less than a month after the European Commission announced it would supply Ukraine with €450 million ($500 million) worth of arms and ammunition.

A strategic assessment by the EU identified “regional instability, conflict, state fragility, inter-state tensions, external influences, [and the] destabilising impact of non-state actors” as reasons for drafting the plan, suggesting that the bloc may, at some point and in some capacity, intervene in future conflicts akin to the one in Ukraine. 

Doing so would be an unprecedented step for the union, but Strategic Compass still falls short of the united military some leaders support. Macron has long been a proponent of creating an EU army and lessening the bloc’s dependence on NATO, an alliance he called “brain dead” back in 2019.Macron renewed his push for an EU fighting force independent of NATO earlier this month, stating that the conflict in Ukraine had “changed the era” for the European Union. However, the Eastern Europeans are still content to rely on NATO for their defense needs, with Polish Deputy Prime Minister Piotr Glinski telling The Telegraph on Saturday that the EU was not ready for conflict, and that Macron’s comments risk “destabilizing Europe.”

The 10 nation military coalition of ‘iron and clay’ armies will be allowed to militarily enter any and every country under threat or activity of Islamic Terrorism, in the previously mentioned areas.

NO POLITICAL LEADER will argue against this strategy. How many African, Middle East or Asian countries have the resources or military strength to launch an all-out military assault or campaign against worldwide Islamic Terrorists? NO SINGLE COUNTRY HAS THIS ABILITY. But, the Beast will give the ’10 King EU Military Coalition’ the ability, authority and sovereignty to do just this. This is NOT world war three.

The Bible is clear that they do the Beast’s bidding ‘for an hour.’ An hour is not months or years, like the first or second world wars. An hour is a relatively short period of time. Islamic terrorist cells will be quickly identified, targeted and eradicated. This does not involve nuclear weapons or such, but rather a ‘quick strike, flexible, coordinated (act in ‘unison’)’ military force. This is EXACTLY how the EU is developing its ‘unified military defenses.’ I have documented this extensively over the past seven (7) years. Macron is a ‘ring-leader’ regarding this effort. It is also no coincidence that Macron is BFF’s (Best Friends) with MbS. Don’t believe me? I challenge you to run a ‘google search’ under Macron and MbS and discover how many ‘selfies’ they have taken together. Notice who is the ‘dominant’ friend of the two (Yes, Your Highness!).
