A top aide to US President Joe Biden made an unannounced trip to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to discuss efforts to contain the Israel-Hamas war, a US official said.

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with senior Saudi officials to discuss broader diplomatic efforts to maintain stability across the region and prevent the Israel-Hamas war from expanding, according to the official. His trip was also meant to “build upon the work that was already underway between Saudi Arabia and the United States over recent months to build towards a sustainable peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians.”

Washington has been a staunch supporter of Israel’s right to defend itself and respond to the October 7 Hamas attack, which marked one of the deadliest ever against Israel. After the US military deployed assets to the region, including aircraft carriers and thousands of troops, Iran-backed militias started targeting American forces in Iraq and Syria. Yemen’s Houthis have also attacked Israel with ballistic missiles as well as hijacked and targeted commercial vessels traveling through the Red Sea. Sullivan’s meetings in Saudi Arabia touched upon efforts to deter Houthi attacks, the US official told Al Arabiya English.

The US has been in touch with at least 12 countries as part of efforts to develop a naval task force to secure the passage of commercial vessels in and around the Red Sea, a US defense official told Al Arabiya English on Tuesday. US officials have said they are looking at ways to expand an existing task force, Combined Task Force 153, which currently has its base in Bahrain. CTF-153 currently has 39 member nations, but the US defense official said on Tuesday that talks involving 12 countries are centered on what they may be able to contribute to the current task of securing maritime navigation.

The White House announced on Wednesday that Sullivan would travel to Israel on Thursday to meet with officials there to discuss the latest developments in Israel and Gaza. Biden said this week that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu needed to change his government, which he said does not believe in a two-state solution. He also warned that Israel was losing international support over its continued bombardment of Gaza, which has led to thousands of civilian deaths in their bid to defeat Hamas militarily.
