Saudi Arabia’s billion-dollar-a-year anti-aging initiative, the Hevolution Foundation, has announced the globe’s “biggest competition” – a $101 million prize fund with the XPrize Foundation – which promotes “radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity” through incentivized competitions. Dr. Mehmood Khan, CEO of the Hevolution Foundation, announced the prize on the sidelines of Wednesday’s inaugural Global Healthspan Summit in Riyadh. The seven-year global competition is to “revolutionize the way we approach aging,” said Khan. This radical collaborative effort will bring together top scientists, clinicians, policymakers, industry experts and non-profits to drive new science and create a future where healthy aging is made possible forever.”

It aims to get hundreds, even thousands of teams, to collaborate, forge partnerships, and think of novel ways to deaccelerate aging. “Thinking of the biggest health challenge on the planet is fitting for this kind of collaboration (with XPRIZE). It was a no-brainer,” said Khan. Everyone from high school students to startups, as well as universities, companies, individuals or community-based organizations, are welcome to apply. The competition will run over seven years, with the winner will be announced by 2030 – the year Saudi Arabia hosts Riyadh Expo 2030. Khan made the announcement with Dr. Peter Diamandis, founder and executive chairman of XPRIZE Foundation, who said: “We are making a global call for people to come together – take a look at the guidelines and register a team.”

He said judges would eventually be looking for at least a ten-year, if not a 20-year, reversal in aging in a part of the human body – be it tissue, muscle, or skin. Diamandis explained that XPRIZE was launched 29 years ago, with the first competition being a prize of $10 million for the team that could build a spaceship carrying three people into space. On October 4, 2004, XPRIZE captured the world’s attention by awarding the $10 million Ansari XPRIZE—the largest prize in history—to Mojave Aerospace Ventures for their SpaceShipOne. Led by famed aerospace designer Burt Rutan and his company Scaled Composites, with financial backing from Paul Allen, the team’s winning technology was licensed by Richard Branson to create Virgin Galactic. With the awarding of this competition, a brand-new $2 billion private space industry was launched.

Since then, XPRIZE has launched 20 different prizes with more than $300 million in prizes awarded, and driven almost $4 billion in research and investment ideas and innovation.

In its near-three-decade history, the partnership with the Hevolution Foundation is the largest ever prize money ever awarded.

The previous biggest was in 2021 when SpaceX founder Elon Musk pledged to give away $100 million in the XPrize Carbon Removal contest announced in 2021. The contest started on Earth Day and will last four years, ending on Earth Day 2025, or April 22, 2025.

Khan said he believes the $101 million prize will actually see between eight and ten times that figure in research and development in the anti-aging field.

It aims to leave “an indelible mark on the well-being of every person on this planet,” he said.

In the largest-ever gathering of geroscience, more than 2,000 people, including scientists and research institutions, innovators and entrepreneurs, investors, corporate leaders, international organizations & non-profits, and dignitaries, have come together for the GHS summit under the banner, ‘Together We Thrive.’
