“The earth rolls up like a scroll,” is obviously a reference, from a first-century perspective, of what nuclear explosions will look like. In a nuclear explosion, the atmosphere literally rolls back on itself. A tremendous rush of air flows outward from the initial explosion creating a tremendous vacuum. It is the air flowing back into the vacuum which creates such destruction.

He writes, “Stars fell to earth.” The Greek word “stars” here describes a meteor. Meteors strike the atmosphere and glow fiery red. When they hit the earth, they pulverize dirt and other materials that remain in the atmosphere, shutting out the sun, for two or more years.

Nuclear winter results. No sunshine equals no crops. People starve.

His description may also apply to today’s “fractional orbital bombs.” Nuclear-tipped missiles are fired simultaneously from orbiting satellites. These can strike several cities simultaneously. When these missiles streak through the air, they’ll look like meteors entering the atmosphere.

Look at the human reaction.

Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” (Revelation 6:15-17)

Every strata of society is affected.

The greatest prayer meeting the world has ever seen takes place. You’d think that those who endured these things would finally call upon the name of the Lord. Instead, they begin praying to the rocks.

For many years, the United States, Israel, Middle East analysts and nuclear experts have all warned that the region could be on the brink of a nuclear domino effect. As they see it, if Iran becomes a military nuclear power, proliferation will follow, with Saudi Arabia likely pursuing its own nuclear deterrence. Then this conceivably could happen with Turkey, a NATO member and geopolitical power, and Egypt, the largest Arab country and second largest recipient of U.S. military aid after Israel.

Now, it appears, both the United States and Israel may actually be contributing to this proliferation and setting the dominos in motion – with potentially major ramifications. Two important documents pertaining to U.S. policy in the Middle East were made public in the last week or so. First, the Pentagon released its 2023 “Strategy for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction.” The 30-page paper ranks the threat levels the United States attaches to various actors. China is defined as a “pacing challenge,” America’s greatest challenge – a potentially ominous one – in the coming decades.

Russia is described as an “acute threat,” while North Korea and Iran are “persistent threats.” According to the authors, “Iran is not pursuing a nuclear weapons program at this time, but has the capacity to produce enough fissile material for a nuclear device in less than two weeks.” The conventional wisdom in both the United States and Israel is that Iran – already a “threshold nuclear power” for all intents and purposes – has enriched enough fissile material at 20 percent and 60 percent to reach 90 percent in a few short weeks, achieving weapons-grade status. Washington believes that Iran has enough fissile material to (5) produce about five (5) nuclear bombs, if the political decision to proceed is made, which for now certainly has not been made.

It should be emphasized, however, that this 90 percent doesn’t mean that a country has bombs ready to drop. It would take months, maybe up to two years by some conservative estimates, for Iran to perfect the implosion mechanism, assemble a workable warhead and mount the device on a delivery system such as a missile.

Further, the United States believes that Iran isn’t complying with its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention. After failing to renew the Iranian nuclear accords from which the United States unilaterally withdrew in 2018, Tehran and Washington reached “understandings” three weeks ago under which Iran pledges to halt further enrichment or accumulation of enriched uranium. Also in the document, the Pentagon stresses that efforts are needed to “prevent proliferation.”

How is this consistent with reports of a civilian nuclear reactor that Saudi Arabia is requesting as part of a deal with the United States that includes normalization with Israel? It isn’t. How is the goal of nonproliferation consistent with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s declaration on Fox News two weeks ago that Riyadh will pursue a nuclear weapon if Iran does? It isn’t. In fact, the crown prince already said this in 2018 on “60 Minutes,” before the Chinese-mediated rapprochement between the Saudis and Iran.

‘A regional arms race’

Then, in a letter to President Joe Biden on Wednesday, 20 U.S. senators led by Democrats Chris Van Hollen (Maryland) and Chris Murphy (Connecticut) warned of the risks of a U.S.-Saudi-Israeli tripartite deal. They asked the president to make sure that enforceable provisions on the Palestinian issue are made by Israel, but before that, they alluded to the Saudi-American bilateral dimension and warned in unequivocal terms: “A high degree of proof would be required to show that a binding defense treaty with Saudi Arabia – an authoritarian regime which regularly undermines U.S. interests in the region, has a deeply concerning human rights record, and has pursued an aggressive and reckless foreign policy agenda – aligns with U.S. interests, especially if such a commitment requires the United States to deploy substantial new permanent resources to the region.

“MbS is also reportedly seeking U.S. support to develop a civilian nuclear program, and to purchase more advanced U.S. weaponry. While we should seriously consider whether it is in U.S. interests to help Saudi Arabia develop a domestic nuclear program, we should always maintain the high bar of the ‘gold standard’ 123 Agreement and insist on adherence to the Additional Protocol. And as the devastating war in Yemen has shown, the provision of more advanced weaponry to Saudi Arabia should be done with careful deliberation to ensure that such equipment only be used for truly defensive purposes and does not contribute to a regional arms race.”

The letter of course came in the context of the three demands that the Saudis have reportedly made: a defense pact with the United States (with or without a NATO-like Article 5 – a collective security provision that would trigger U.S. involvement if Saudi Arabia is attacked, say, by the Houthis from Yemen). The second demand is state-of-the-art weapons systems, platforms and technology, and the third is a “civilian nuclear program” reportedly under U.S. supervision.

According to Simon Henderson and David Schenker, two renowned Saudi experts writing in a Washington Institute policy paper in August, “MbS is highly unlikely to accept any agreement that gives the kingdom less than what Washington [and the other Iran-deal signatories China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany] conceded to Iran in the 2015 nuclear accord.” In January, Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman – the crown prince’s half brother – indicated what the Saudis want: “the entire nuclear fuel cycle,” he said at a conference in Riyadh. It’s possible that Iran is content with threshold-state status and chooses not to bear the consequences of becoming a military nuclear power. It’s also possible that even with a reactor and a fuel cycle, Saudi Arabia won’t pursue the military nuclear option. It’s therefore possible that Turkey and Egypt will decide not to proceed. It’s also possible that all these assumptions will be proved wrong.

Whether or not a “Saudi deal” happens, the idea of a nuclear Middle East no longer seems a matter of diplomatic or academic debate. It’s a rolling process.

As Saudis Seek Nuclear Program, Israel’s Silence Is Astounding

The silence of the head of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission at the IAEA’s annual conference is especially extraordinary considering Israeli security officials’ objection to the enrichment of uranium on Saudi soil

The speech by the head of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s annual conference Tuesday brought no new tidings. Moshe Edri, a retired brigadier general, repeated Israel’s long-standing stance on Iran’s violations (enriching uranium to 60 percent) and Syria’s lack of cooperation with the IAEA. The only new details were his remarks about a contribution by Israel, which had sent personal protective gear to improve safety at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in eastern Ukraine. The six-reactor plant, the largest in Europe, was taken by Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, but it’s still being operated by Ukrainian technicians. The Kremlin rushed to denounce this small Israeli humanitarian gesture.

Edri didn’t mention Saudi Arabia, and that was no coincidence. His silence followed reports that the package deal being discussed by Saudi Arabia, the United States and Israel includes the enriching of uranium on Saudi soil. In interviews with Western reporters on the eve of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York this month, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman warned that if Iran obtains nuclear weapons, his country will have to do the same. The IAEA, the United States and Israel should have told the crown prince that any threat to develop nuclear weapons is dangerous and breaches the international community’s principles, but they failed to do so.

As far as Israel is concerned, this silence is outrageous. The issue of uranium enrichment on Saudi territory should be keeping the leaders up at night. But it seems that Edri’s boss, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is willing to whitewash even an abomination totally contradicting Israel’s national and strategic interests in favor of his personal and narrow political interests.

As far as can be judged by the few utterances on the issue, (5) Israel’s leaders are deeply divided. National Security Council chief Tzachi Hanegbi and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, who are very close to Netanyahu, will tolerate uranium enrichment on Saudi soil subject to tight U.S. and IAEA supervision. Their approach reflects Netanyahu’s position. They are opposed by Israel’s military chief, Herzl Halevi, his Military Intelligence director, Aharon Haliva, Mossad chief David Barnea and the heads of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission, as well as former Mossad director Tamir Pardo and former Military Intelligence chief Tamir Hayman.

Their position was reflected Tuesday by retired general Udi Adam, the former director general of Israel’s nuclear reactor in Dimona. Adam told Kan Bet public radio that Israel must not agree to any Middle Eastern country enriching uranium on its own soil, even if Israel has a peace agreement with it. Undoubtedly, Netanyahu is willing to do anything so that Israel establishes diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia on his watch. Such an agreement would no doubt be a huge achievement, and every day that passes attests to the great rapprochement between the two sides.

In the past, Israeli-Saudi relations were led covertly by the Mossad, which would share intelligence and encourage Israeli high-tech companies to sell the kingdom spyware tools and bugging equipment. Today the relations are more in the open. Israeli ministers and legislators (Likud’s Haim Katz, Shlomo Karhi and David Bitan) are being allowed to visit Saudi Arabia for international conferences. Meanwhile, Israeli businesspeople and journalists with foreign passports are being allowed to tour the kingdom almost unhindered, and cooperation deals are expanding in agriculture, desalination, high-tech and medicine.

East Jerusalem angle

Still, despite Israel’s narrow influence on the deal being forged by the United States and Saudi Arabia, the nuclear issue ultimately depends on the crown prince. If he agrees to waive the demand to enrich uranium on his soil, there’s no doubt that American nuclear technology including reactors will be sold to Riyadh. At the IAEA’s annual conference, the Saudi energy minister took a step in this direction when he declared that his country was leaving the IAEA’s so-called small quantities protocol and planned to implement the agency’s Action Plan on Nuclear Safety in full. The Action Plan calls on member states to work toward establishing a global nuclear liability regime that addresses the concerns of all states that might be affected by a nuclear accident.

For Israel, the picture is more complicated. Even if the Saudis compromise on where the uranium is enriched, there’s no guarantee that Riyadh will normalize relations with Israel. Judging by Saudi leaders’ declarations, including by the crown prince, a lot depends on the Palestinian issue. A new Saudi ambassador presented his credentials to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah this week. Stressing the kingdom’s commitment to a Palestinian state, he announced Riyadh’s intention to open a consulate in East Jerusalem; that is, in Palestinian Jerusalem.

If the Saudis insist on progress in the Palestinian channel, it’s hard to see Netanyahu getting his governing coalition to agree. This is also true if it’s “only” an interim agreement for freezing construction of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank and giving new life to a two-state solution. We can presume that Netanyahu will be willing to offload his partners on the religious-nationalist far right for a historic achievement, but this doesn’t guarantee him an alternative government with Benny Gantz’s National Unity Party. It’s hard to see Gantz repeating his mistake by once again joining a cabinet headed by Netanyahu, and it’s hard to see Netanyahu agreeing to a government where he doesn’t start out as prime minister if there’s a rotation agreement.

But he knows that if he abandons the Palestinians to the occupation, this could stir harsh objections at home and even expose the kingdom to terrorism. It’s doubtful whether all the opposing expectations and conflicting interests in the quadrangle can be bridged, especially considering the time limit. Analysts agree that the last date to reach a quadrilateral or even a bilateral (Saudi-U.S.) agreement is March, 2024. After that, the U.S. (5) election campaign will be well (5) underway and might take us (5) to a completely different world.

Commentary; the rider is the ‘beast’ or ‘antichrist’. His being clothed in white suggests ‘3’ false righteousness, false peace and false authority. He has a bow, but no arrows. He rules with lies and threats, but no military or arms. He conquers and subjugates, not with force but with ‘5’ lies, deception, false covenants and false agreements and false promises. He is the world’s greatest ‘political’ leader and deceiver. He is the one who ‘confirms the false covenant of seven years with Jacob’ which starts the tribulation. You should know now of who I speak. His ‘crown’ represents authority, rulership and position. It even literally represents his ‘position’ as Crown Prince, once the tribulation begins. My discernment is that the ‘white horse upon which he sits’ is symbolically a white Arabian stallion.
