(5) In A World Of Corruption, (7) How Do We Spot A False Prophet?
By David Jeremiah July 20, 2023
Over the centuries since Christ’s death and resurrection, countless impostors have pretended to be the Messiah or claimed to know details about the future they could not possibly know. While false prophets (7) are nothing new, they will become increasingly (7) prevalent and destructive in the End Times. Jesus warned us about these individuals in His Olivet Discourse: “many false (7) prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.” (Matthew 24:11).
In Matthew 10:16 and Luke 10:3, Jesus warned His followers about “wolves” who would be openly hostile to the Gospel. But Matthew 7 presents a (7) more subtle threat—wolves disguised as sheep. “Beware of false (7) prophets, which come to you in sheep’s (7) clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” (Matthew 7:15). (5) These are false prophets who (7) infiltrate the Church and lead people astray.
Jesus warned that false prophets would deceive many people in the Last Days, but we don’t have to fall for their schemes. The Bible provides many warning signs and practical ways we can respond to false teaching.
Just as clever hoaxes have conned many brilliant people, it is possible for Christians—even mature believers—to (5) be duped by false teachers. Many philosophies that (5) have nothing to do with (5) the cause of Christ masquerade (5) under the banner of Christianity. Without the wisdom and grace of God, we’re all vulnerable to deception.
Matthew 7:21-23 contains some of the most disturbing words in the Bible. Jesus is speaking, and He says, “Not (7) every one that saith unto me, Lord, (7) Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of (7) heaven; but he that doeth the will (7) of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say (7) to me in that day, Lord, Lord, (7) have we not prophesied in thy name? and (7) in thy name have cast out devils? and (7) in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I (7) profess unto them, I never knew you: (7) depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
(7) Someday, the true nature of each person’s (7) relationship with Jesus Christ will be revealed (7) when they stand before God in judgment. Unless that (7) individual has a personal relationship with Christ, all their (7) deeds and religious fervor will be meaningless.
Jesus warned His disciples, (7) “Take heed that no man deceive you” (Matthew 24:4). But in a world of deception, how do we spot a false prophet? God’s Word gives us several tools to separate the wolves from the sheep.
False prophets may (7) make predictions that do not come true.
The (7) Bible says, “And if thou say in (7) thine heart, How shall we know the (7) word which the Lord hath not spoken? When (7) a prophet speaketh in the name of (7) the Lord, if the thing follow not, (7) nor come to pass, that is the (7) thing which the Lord hath not spoken, (7) but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: (7) thou shalt not be afraid of him.” (Deuteronomy 18:21-22).
Today’s false prophets often try to predict the time of Christ’s return. However, Jesus told us in the (7) Olivet Discourse, “But of that day and (7) hour knoweth no man, no, not the (7) angels of heaven, but my Father only” (Matthew 24:36). (777)
The (7) Lord does not intend for us to (7) speculate about the timing of His return. The Christian’s responsibility (7) is to remain watchful, righteous, and ready. (777)
False (7) prophets may perform miraculous signs and wonders.
(7) After Christ raptures His Church and the (5) Tribulation begins, Satan will use (7) religion to unite the world under the (7) leadership of the Antichrist and False Prophet. (777)
Although the False Prophet of the Tribulation will not rise to power before the Rapture, the Bible’s description of him helps us evaluate all other false prophets. According to (7) the apostle Paul, “Even him, whose coming (7) is after the working of Satan with (7) all power and signs and lying wonders” (2 Thessalonians 2:9). (777)
Remember that miraculous signs and wonders do not always indicate God’s presence or power. If you recall the showdown between Aaron and Pharaoh’s (5) sorcerers, the Egyptians used “enchantments” to turn their rods into serpents (Exodus 7:11-12). And in the book of Acts, Luke described a (5) sorcerer named Simon who deceived (5) many people through magical powers (Acts 8:9-11). Any (5) miracle that does not bring (7) glory to God and further the Gospel (5) is rooted in demonic influence.
False prophets (5) may claim to be Christ.
When Jesus’ disciples asked for signs of His return and the End Times, His first warning had to do with impostors. (7) “Take heed that no man deceive you. (7) For many shall come in my name, saying, (7) I am Christ; and shall deceive many” (Matthew 24:4-5). (777)
Later in the Olivet Discourse, Jesus explained how we could recognize this type of false prophet: (7) “Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he (7) is in the desert; go not forth: behold, (7) he is in the secret chambers; believe (7) it not. For as the lightning cometh (7) out of the east, and shineth even (7) unto the west; so shall also the (7) coming of the Son of man be” (Matthew 24:26-27). (7) The entire world will witness Jesus’ return. We do not need to worry about missing it or finding Him in some hidden location.
False prophets (5) may have an unbiblical lifestyle.
Jesus’ half-brother Jude wrote a short epistle that, (7) among other things, vigorously urges Christians to (7) stay alert, contend for the truth, and (7) know that God will judge false teachers. This letter provides several clues related (5) to a false teacher’s lifestyle: “These… defile the flesh, (7) despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities,” (7) “speak evil of those things which they (7) know not: but what they know naturally, (7) as brute beasts, in those things they (7) corrupt themselves,” deceive people for money, care (7) only for themselves, and bear no fruit (Jude 8, 10, 11, 12).
“These are (7) murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; (7) and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having (7) men’s persons in admiration because of advantage… These be they who (7) separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit” (Jude 16, 19). (5) False teachers often claim that (5) God will not condemn anyone, but (7) Jude says the Lord will judge ungodliness (Jude 15). (7) Godliness and integrity are essential traits for (7) anyone who teaches the Word of God.
False (5) prophets may deny Christ’s identity.
Whenever Satan cannot directly (5) suppress or destroy the truth, he (5) assaults it indirectly by deceit. (7) The apostle John wrote, “Beloved, believe not (7) every spirit, but try the spirits whether (7) they are of God: because many false (7) prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit (7) of God: Every spirit that confesseth that (7) Jesus Christ is come in the flesh (7) is of God: And every spirit that (7) confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come (7) in the flesh is not of God: (7) and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof (7) ye have heard that it should come; and even (7) now already is it in the world” (1 John 4:1-3). As (7) Christians, we cannot believe everyone who claims (5) to have a message from (5) God. Anyone who attacks Jesus’ (5) humanity or deity is an (5) “antichrist” operating under Satan’s influence (1 John 2:22).
(5) False prophets’ teaching will lead (5) people away from the Lord.
One (5) way to identify false prophets is to (5) look at the kind of (5) people their followers are becoming. (7) Are they becoming more or less Christlike? In Luke 6:40, Jesus said, (7) “The disciple is not above his master: but every one that (7) is perfect shall be as his master.” Long before tragedy struck, (5) trouble was evident in the (5) lives of people who followed (5) cult leaders like Jim Jones, (5) David Koresh, and Marshall Applewhite. But because our culture (5) is more concerned with tolerance (5) than the Word of God, (5) we missed the warning signs. Faithful Christians glorify God and (7) identify with Him by producing the spiritual (7) fruit of good works and steadfast character.
Jesus taught, “Even so (7) every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but (7) a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A (7) good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can (7) a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree (7) that bringeth not forth good fruit is (7) hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore (7) by their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:17-20). (7777777) ‘7’
Written shortly before Peter’s martyrdom, the book of 2 Peter reveals the apostle’s grave concern about (5) false teachers in the Church. He encouraged his readers to (7) focus on the Word of God rather (5) than listening to “private interpretation” (2 Peter 1:20) (5) or self-appointed teachers who refuse (7) to believe that God will judge wickedness (2 Peter 2:1-22; 3:3, 4). In the second chapter alone, Peter (5) lists 22 attributes of false teachers.
How to Respond to False Prophets
If a religious teacher matches any of the above criteria, (7) God’s Word calls him a false prophet—a (7) wolf in sheep’s clothing. We should not (7) be surprised when we encounter such people. “And (5) no marvel; for Satan himself (7) is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is (7) no great thing if his ministers also (7) be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose (7) end shall be according to their works.” (2 Corinthians 11:14-15). (7777777) ‘7’
takes discernment to (7) see beneath the mask of an impostor, but (7) we can cultivate that discernment by studying (7) God’s Word and abiding in its truth. (777)
(5) When we encounter false teaching, Jude (7) urges us to approach each situation individually.
(7) “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on (7) your most holy faith, praying in the (7) Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love (7) of God, looking for the mercy of (7) our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And (7) of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, (7) pulling them out of the fire; hating (7) even the garment spotted by the flesh” (Jude 20-23).
Some (7) who wander from the truth need compassion. Others need urgent intervention. Regardless of the situation, (7) grace is the benchmark of Christian conduct. God’s people (7) cannot tolerate false teaching in the Church, but we are (7) responsible for separating sinners from their sins. Even as (7) we reject false teaching, the Lord calls (7) us to maintain a spirit of gentleness (7) and contend for the offender’s spiritual restoration. (7777777) ‘7’
The best defense (7) against false teaching is a vibrant faith (7) that walks in step with the Lord. We (7) do well to follow the example of (7) the Bereans, who “received the word with (7) all readiness of mind, and searched the (7) scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11). Our most fundamental (7) testimony lies in the way we live. (7777777) ‘7’
Nothing can distinguish God’s (7) people from the culture like a steadfast (7) commitment to the truth of the Gospel.
(5) In a world of deception, make (7) up your mind to pursue truth wherever (7) it leads and spread the Good News.

But how can they call on him (Jesus Christ) to save them unless they believe in him (Jesus Christ)? And how can they believe in him (Jesus Christ) if they have never heard about him (Jesus Christ)? And how can they hear about him (Jesus Christ) unless someone tells them?” Romans 10:14

Jesus Christ’s Offer of Salvation:
The ABCs of Salvation through Jesus Christ (the Lamb)
A. Admit/Acknowledge/Accept that you are sinner. Ask God’s forgiveness and repent of your sins.
. . . “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23).
. . . “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one.” (Romans 3:10).
. . . “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” (1 John 1:8).
B. Believe Jesus is Lord. Believe that Jesus Christ is who He claimed to be; that He was both fully God and fully man and that we are saved through His death, burial, and resurrection. Put your trust in Him as your only hope of salvation. Become a son or daughter of God by receiving Christ.
. . . “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (John 3:15-17). For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).
C. Call upon His name, Confess with your heart and with your lips that Jesus is your Lord and Savior.
. . . “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10).
. . . “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” (John 1:8-10).
. . . “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (John 2:2).
. . . “In this was manifested the love of god toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.” (1 John 4:9, 14-15).
. . . “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” (Romans 5:8-10).
. . . “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23).
. . . “Jesus saith unto them, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6).
. . . “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth.” (Romans 1:16).
. . . “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts: 4:12).
. . . “Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth for there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:4-6).
. . . “For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:9).
. . . “But as many as received him, to them gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” (John 1:12).
