(7) The Fall of America Starts from Within; How the US national security state threatens American freedoms now more than ever

(LifeSiteNews) — “It is indisputable that the U.S. security state wields more power now than ever before” – so says Glenn Greenwald in his latest internet broadcast.

Following the scandalous spectacle of Russiagate, the distortion of public information under lockdown, and the conspiracy of the intelligence community to suppress the damaging Hunter Biden laptop story, comes news which shows precisely how much of the national and international conversation is shaped by former U.S. intelligence agents.

How far Greenwald’s claim can be evidenced is the subject of my two-part report today, which will compare what has gone before with what is happening now regarding the so-called “secret state” in the U.S.

A brief history of the national security state

What became today’s sprawling secret state began with powers granted under the National Security Act of 1947 – which permitted the formerly illegal covert operations to destabilize Soviet nations abroad.

It was followed by the creation of a special secret agency. Called the Office of Policy Coordination (OPC), it became an espionage and counter-intelligence branch of the CIA.

Set up under Frank Wisner in 1948, it was intended to be a weapon against communism – with the knowledge that the creation of a secret network acting without transparency was a danger to democracy.

According to the writer Deborah Davis, the following year, the Wisner launched Mockingbird, a project whose aim was the capture of domestic American media.

Davis said in “Katharine the Great,” her biography of former Washington Post owner Katharine Graham that, “By the early 1950s, Wisner ‘owned’ respected members of the New York Times, Newsweek, CBS, and other communications vehicles.”

Mockingbird has been described as a “conspiracy theory,” as being unevidenced, and its Wikipedia entry is replete with derisory references to QAnon.

The entry omits much evidence which is readily found elsewhere, both online and in reality, to suggest that the goal of the capture of U.S. media by the secret state has not only been pursued for almost 80 years, it has been a tremendous success.

The designation of these activities as “conspiracy theories” is itself a compelling argument of the power of these agencies to shape the perception of reality.

Their actions, taken in the open to subvert and control major media organizations have long been documented in individual cases. Yet taken together they suggest a pattern which, despite its designation as the fantasies of the paranoid, provides a far better match for the controlled reality we inhabit than the dismissive alibis they offer in its place.

Abuses of power

Greenwald says that the power of the intelligence agencies was supposed to be “only directed outwards, towards America’s enemies.” Hence, as Greenwald noted:

The fundamental guiding principle of the U.S. intelligence community was that its powers should never be used domestically.

This stance was affirmed by John Deutch, director of Central Intelligence in 1996, in his response to a Senate hearing on the use of journalists and clergy by the CIA.

Simply put, the Central Intelligence Agency policy is not to use journalists accredited to American news organizations, their parent organizations, American clergy or the Peace Corps for intelligence purposes.

This includes any use of such organizations for cover. The policy that I have just stated, Mr. Chairman, has been in place for 20 years.

Yet the evidence given in the hearing suggested it was common practice, which endangered the free press as well as the lives of journalists – and whose only guarantee was the good faith of the director of the CIA.

Ted Koppel, who was the anchorman for Nightline for 25 years, said:

If lives are at stake, if the national interest is genuinely threatened, then I think that regardless of what Congress finds and regardless of what laws are in place, that our Intelligence Community will do what it has to do.

I would simply like the reassurance of knowing that there was a legal line in place and that those people who are violating the law recognize that there may be consequences for that. By removing those kinds of consequences, you simply create a circumstance where there is absolutely no prohibition against this kind of thing, and we are left with the good will, the professionalism, the assumption that the motives of the director and the deputy director of the CIA are similar to – they certainly are not parallel to or equivalent to those of a country that believes in a free press.

He reminded the hearing of the intelligence community’s record in the matter of inspiring this “good faith.”

With all due respect, sir, we also have precedent for the intelligence agencies of the United States routinely violating laws and simply assuming that they won’t be held to account.

Koppel was clearly outraged by the impunity of the CIA and other agencies to act, and then disclaim their actions, with no accountability or concern for the impact on democracy. His retort recalls a time when this only seemed to endanger Americans abroad:

First of all, why don’t we go all the way, then? Why don’t we simply enlist all American foreign correspondents overseas with the CIA and be done with the nonsense of assuming that we had nothing to do with one another?

This pretense has now been dropped. After 27 years, there is often no difference at all between the media and the intelligence agencies.

A growing influence

Greenwald argues that in granting secrecy – and growing funding – to the activities of agencies such as the CIA, the nascent power of the national security state was one factor in the infamous warning given by outgoing President Dwight Eisenhower in 1961.

In the councils of government we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.

Eisenhower’s speech nevertheless recognized the need to combat what he called “a hostile ideology, global in scope, atheistic in character, ruthless in purpose and insidious in method – unhappily the danger it poses promises to be of indefinite duration.”

He was speaking of the communist threat, yet his words could equally apply to the secret state which has captured America in a project of forever wars.

A hostile ideology

Anticommunism was no mere “red scare.” The Soviet Union was itself engaged in changing regimes, sponsoring civil wars, and fomenting revolutions. This was the great game in the mid- to late-twentieth century.

It was one which transformed the American state. The project of sponsoring foreign wars and destabilizing nations abroad required a reliable flow of supporting information at home. The result was the infernal partnership of mass media and domestic intelligence agents with a hidden apparatus dedicated to perpetual subversion – and military action – overseas.

This would lead to the takeover of influential positions in the mainstream media by serving and former members of the CIA and similar agencies. The “Mockingbird” scandal broke in the early 1970s, but the exposure of media manipulation by intelligence agency figures did nothing to halt the project. The Watergate scandal followed, becoming a hallowed tale of how journalism safeguards the freedom of America. Yet the main source behind Watergate, which raised concerns over the growing influence of the secret intelligence agencies, was  the acting director of the FBI, L Patrick Gray, who was leaking information to Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward.

Bob Woodward was a former U.S. Naval Intelligence officer.

This partnership of domestic intelligence propaganda and covert foreign operations would flourish in the decades to come.

The 1980s, with the creation of CIA front groups such as Freedom House and the National Endowment for Democracy under President Ronald Reagan, would see what Robert Parry would call “a shadow foreign policy.” Directed in the dark, and given cover at home, it would involve operations from Nicaragua to Ukraine.

Why did these adventures continue after the fall of communism? With the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, where was the power of the “hostile ideology, global in scope, atheistic in character, ruthless in purpose and insidious in method” of which Eisenhower had warned? It was at home in the U.S., spying on its citizens and manufacturing their consent.

CIA, Big Tech, and the media: How this partnership is colluding to manipulate the American people

(LifeSiteNews) — The record shows that to these intelligence agencies, America’s enemies are so frequently found at home that their agents “Now occupy the highest ranking positions in Big Tech.” 

This is the claim of Glenn Greenwald in his latest System Update show. He does not claim that the infamous “Mockingbird” CIA program – whose aim was the capture of domestic American media – has expanded to dominate the U.S. media. He says that such a project is no longer required, as the U.S. broadcast media are open about the number of intelligence agents employed as newsmakers.

As Greenwald puts it:

Today, there’s absolutely no need at all for Operation Mockingbird.

That is because, as we previously reported, U.S. security state agents openly send their top operatives to get hired by television networks, which proudly tout the number of former CIA, FBI, NSA and Homeland Security operatives on their payroll to report the news to Americans.

The scope of this infiltration exceeds the wildest dreams of Frank Wisner’s pre-internet Mockingbird operation. With the Twitter Files, the presence of former intelligence agents in commanding positions on social media platforms is no longer a “conspiracy.”

But it’s not only corporate media outlets that are drowning in former operatives of the U.S. security state.

These agencies have also utterly infiltrated Big Tech corporations, especially Google and Facebook, and especially among those positions that are responsible for censoring political content from these monopolistic platforms.

Greenwald notes that this amounts to a coordinated domestic program of censorship and propaganda to shape the minds of the population. 

In other words, at exactly the same time that a small army of security state operatives openly get hired by and help shape the propaganda that emanates from the country’s largest media corporations, they are also dictating the boundaries of what citizens can say online, of what ideas and people can be heard and which ideas and people are prohibited.

Greenwald cites a Helsinki Times piece of November 2021, which starkly outlines the legacy of Mockingbird, and the current day operations of the CIA. 

Carl Bernstein, a famous American investigative journalist who unveiled the scandal in 1977, said that according to the plan, the CIA recruited journalists that were put on a payroll by the CIA and instructed to write ‘fake stories.’ The CIA admitted that at least 400 journalists and 25 large organizations around the world had secretly carried out assignments for the agency.

To this day, the CIA still attempts to monitor and manipulate public opinion through this despicable practice. The so-called truth that underpins a news story, from the perspective of the U.S. government, is not worth mentioning at all, with news media just being used as a tool to safeguard the country’s hegemony in the world.

Greenwald highlights the long-standing presence in the media of Pentagon officials employed to shape the narrative in favor of forever war – something even The New York Times reported in 2008 with their article “Behind TV analysts, Pentagon’s Hidden Hand.”

He also cites coverage of former spies enjoying second careers in the mainstream U.S. media, a phenomenon Politico analyzed in a 2018 piece titled “The Spies Who Came in to the TV Studio.”

Twitter Files publisher Matt Taibbi warned of this in a tweet from 2019, which opened with a list of former spies employed in U.S. media. 

Greenwald continued the long list, before reminding his viewers that this “censorship-industrial complex” has extended to the platforms of Big Tech. 

He states that a video featuring presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is “polling at 20 percent,” has been removed by Google. 

That’s how extreme this censorship has become.

They colluded to remove the sitting President, Donald Trump. They destroyed the most popular app – Parler – in the United States, at a time when people were looking for a platform that didn’t censor.

This regime is dictated, argues Greenwald, “in part by the U.S. Government externally,” as the Twitter Files showed. Greenwald also refers to the ruling by Federal Judge Terry Doughty, whose injunction is aimed at halting the Biden administration’s manipulation of social media platforms. 

In response to news of the injunction, which applies to all employees of the Justice Department and the FBI, as well as to federal public health officials, Taibbi published a brief series of tweets which included a damning piece of evidence submitted to the judge. 

The exchange above shows how the FBI ordered the suspension of three twitter accounts, and how Twitter complied without question – despite being unsure themselves whether the accounts were malign or not. 

The legal notice to halt state censorship and media manipulation has been met with cries of protest. 

The move “could upend years of efforts to enhance coordination” between government and social media platforms, as The Washington Post reported.  

Aside from hampering these years of “enhanced coordination,” the New York Times on July 7 lamented it as a “victory for Republicans.” 

The NYT returned on July 13 with the following complaint: “The Future of Online Speech Shouldn’t Belong to One Trump-Appointed Judge in Louisiana.” 

It was written by Dr. Katie Klonick, an associate professor of law at St. John’s University “who studies law and technology, including the governance of online speech by private platforms.”

Legal “expert” Klonick has skillfully excluded any mention of the fact that censorship has been proven to have taken place by the direct command of the intelligence services. 

Her legal expertise is concentrated here on the total exclusion of the evidence.

The war on truth

Why did the Twitter Files get published? These internal documents from Twitter reveal extensive and detailed manipulation of social media by the U.S. government and its former intelligence agents. 

On taking over the social media platform, new owner Elon Musk discovered that Twitter’s main lawyer, James Baker, was not only the former general counsel at the FBI and a key figure in the Trump-Russiagate “witch hunt,” but also ordered the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story. 

Musk fired Baker for this practice suppression of information, which as Twitter’s chief legal counsel he would likely have continued – with the very Twitter Files that revealed his actions. 

As Fox News reported in December 2022:

Ex-Twitter boss Jack Dorsey has called on current CEO Elon Musk to make all the “Twitter files” public after the company’s former deputy general counsel James Baker was “exited” for his role in the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story.

Musk has teased the release of additional “Twitter files” that purport to show how the company worked to censor certain speech, as many conservatives have long asserted. Dorsey on Wednesday suggested that Musk release all the internal documents at once, “without filter,” and also explain the actions Twitter will take under its new management.

Musk then released the complete files to journalists Bari Weiss and Matt Taibbi. You can read all about the Twitter Files here. 

Greenwald’s report mentions CIA influence at Facebook, and that Google’s “Trust and Safety” censorship team, which polices “hate speech,” is “managed by 3 ex-CIA agents” as part of a far wider network of former intelligence agents occupying powerful positions at the company. A report published on Twitter found at least 165 such people, with: 

27 from the CIA 

52 from the FBI 

30 from the NSA (National Security Agency)

50 from the DHS (Department of Homeland Security)

and 6 from the ODNI (Office of the Director of National Intelligence) 

The source gives extensive biographies of many of the above agents. The same account found 115 former intelligence agents working at Facebook as of December 2022, remarking:

Since the 2016 Presidential election, Google/Facebook/Twitter have hired at least 300+ people formerly employed by CIA, FBI, etc…

Ex-CIA agents are Heads of Trust & Safety at Google & Facebook. Is it OK that ex-CIA agents control what ‘misinfo’ is?

These claims were corroborated by independent journalists, such as Michael Shellenberger. He pointed out that Baker wasn’t alone in being a high-level FBI appointee to Twitter. 

Both he and Dawn Burton had been leading figures in the baseless allegations against Donald Trump known as “Russiagate.”

Shellenberger also noted that the sheer number of former FBI agents at Twitter led to the creation of their own welcoming committee and internal social network – with a helpful glossary to translate Twitter-speak to spook-speak

A more recent update appeared in June 2023 suggested Facebook is preparing well in advance for the forthcoming 2024 presidential campaign:

That’s right. A long term CIA agent, whose former job was writing “misinformation” policy over U.S. elections, COVID and international affairs has been promoted to chief election censor.  

He will be working to protect the American people from the truth along with 15 other former intelligence agents. 

An open secret state

This is the state of America today.  

It is the site of an information war prosecuted by a secret state that was created to fight an enemy that vanished thirty years ago.  

This industry of information, profiteering and corruption starts endless wars abroad, and manufactures consent for them at home through the control of the media by the secret state. 

Any emerging champion of the people, or of the truth, will be ruthlessly smeared and will see every available institution mobilized to discredit and ruin them.  

The project of regime change, itself a product of anticommunism, has so completely changed the regime at home that it would be unrecognizable to Eisenhower. 

He warned that the money absorbed in the military-industrial complex which shapes the narrative of the West today is money taken directly from the American people. 

It is a system that is not only financially bankrupting the wider West, whose aging infrastructure is sorely in need of peace dividend to invest at home, but also of printing money to service endless wars abroad. 

The “hostile ideology” of which Eisenhower warned is the one that has captured the United States and its Western allies. It is as indifferent to God as were the Soviets, and has replaced His order with a litany of lies. 

If this is a conspiracy, it is no theory. It is in practice a conspiracy against the American people. 

America is NOT mentioned in the Bible. Why? Discernment.

The US Government has become politically divided and is in discord and disunity. Political discord will get worse and become angrier, antagonistic, confrontational, and hateful with little to no compromise, concession, agreement or unity. Contempt and distrust rules the day. Some would say this is already the case not only between Democrats and Republicans, but also within each party. Whether you believe the US being extremely divided is a result of God’s wrath for its role in dividing Jerusalem or not, it doesn’t matter. The fact remains that the US is becoming bitterly more and more divided. This division has also taken place in culture (LGBTQP+ social inclusiveness agenda), economics (income inequality), etc. The list can go on. America is divided on so many levels, not just politically.

Why is there no mention of the ‘United’ States in Bible Prophecy?

I think we could make a very good case for finding Russia in Bible prophecy. I think we could make a pretty good case for finding China in Bible prophecy. And we certainly could make an airtight case for finding Iran in Bible prophecy—and Israel as well. But we cannot find the United States of America.

How is it that the reigning superpower on the planet today doesn’t seem to be mentioned?

No one knows the answer, but let’s consider an option. What if the Rapture were to take America out of its lead role?

There are approximately 328.2 million people in the United States. For the sake of illustration, I’ll round that number to 300 million. I don’t know how many are followers of Christ, but I read recently that 65 percent of Americans identify as Christians.

To be very conservative, let’s say that 10 percent of the people in the United States of America are Christians. Now, imagine for a moment what would happen if 30 million people (or more) suddenly were to leave Planet Earth in the Rapture—people who work in industries, government, the military, and every area imaginable.

Do you think that would affect our nation?

Of course it would. Effectively, America would collapse overnight.

I don’t know the reason our nation isn’t mentioned in Bible prophecy, but I do know this: Jesus Christ is returning. The Bible says, “This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed” (Romans 13:11 NLT).

If you’re a believer who’s living a compromised life, you need to repent and get right with God. And if you don’t have a relationship with Jesus Christ, then you’ve got to wake up and get right with God. Wake up. Jesus is coming. Are you ready?

But how can they call on him (Jesus Christ) to save them unless they believe in him (Jesus Christ)? And how can they believe in him (Jesus Christ) if they have never heard about him (Jesus Christ)? And how can they hear about him (Jesus Christ) unless someone tells them?” Romans 10:14

For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”

Romans 12:19. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 1:10. And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
