After striking Nicaragua on November 2 as a Category 4 hurricane and leaving more than 235 people dead in Central America, Eta made landfall along the south-central coast of Cuba at around 09:00 UTC on November 8 and in Lower Matecumbe Key in Florida, U.S at 04:00 UTC on November 9, both with maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h (65 mph) – tropical storm strength.
Heavy rainfall from Eta will continue across portions of Cuba, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and southern Florida and spread north into central Florida, NHC warns.
Life-threatening flash flooding will be possible across inundated urban areas of southeast Florida today.
Flash and urban flooding will also be possible for Cuba, Jamaica, the Bahamas and the remainder of southern Florida, along with potential minor river flooding in central Florida.
Tropical storm conditions will continue across portions of the Florida Keys, and south and central Florida today.
Water levels will gradually recede along portions of the southern coast of the Florida peninsula and Keys. Residents in these areas should follow any advice given by local officials.
Eta could approach the Florida Gulf Coast later this week as a tropical storm, and possibly bring impacts from rain, wind, and storm surge. Interests in this area should monitor the progress of Eta and updates to the forecast this week.
At 09:00 UTC on November 9, the center of Tropical Storm “Eta” was located about 70 km (45 miles) NNW of Key West and 100 km (62 miles) S of Naples, Florida. Eta had maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h (62 mph) and was moving 20 km/h (13 mph). Its minimum central pressure was 992 hPa.
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Northwestern Bahamas, including the Abacos, Andros Island, Berry Islands, Bimini, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama Island, and New Providence; Florida coast from Brevard/Volusia County line to Anna Maria Island; Florida Keys from Ocean Reef to the Dry Tortugas, including Florida Bay; and Lake Okeechobee.
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the Cuban provinces of La Habana, Artemisa, Mayabeque, Pinar del Rio, and the Isle of Youth.
A west to west-southwest motion with some reduction in forward speed is expected later today (EST) and tonight.
Little overall motion is expected on Tuesday, November 10, and a slow northward motion is forecast on Wednesday.
On the forecast track, the center of Eta will gradually pull away from the Florida Keys and south Florida today and be over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico tonight through Wednesday.
Data from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft and National Weather Service Doppler radar indicate that the maximum sustained winds remain near 100 km/h with higher gusts.
Some strengthening is forecast during the next day or so, and Eta is forecast to become a hurricane when it moves over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, according to the NHC.
“However, there will be a fair amount of dry air surrounding Eta, and that should limit the amount of intensification. Beyond a couple of days, depending on exactly where Eta is, the models show an increase in westerly shear, which in combination with the dry air should cause a slow decay,” NHC forecaster Cangialosi noted.
“The NHC intensity forecast is unchanged from the previous one, and is also of low confidence since its unclear where Eta will be located later in the week.”
At least 235 fatalities have been reported across Central America since November 2, including about 150 (5+5+5) in Guatemala, 41 in Honduras, 22 in Mexico, 17 in Panama, 2 in Nicaragua, two in Costa Rica, and 1 in El Salvador.
“Eta is the record 12th named storm to make landfall in the continental U.S. this year. Prior to 2020, the most Atlantic named storms to make landfall in the continental U.S. in a single hurricane season was 9, set in 1916,” Dr. Philip Klotzbach noted.
Parts of South Florida are under a flash flood warning. Here are the dangers

South Florida is waking up to a flash flood warning Monday — with some people already jolted out of bed a few times with emergency alerts on their phones. Tropical Storm Eta is causing “significant and potentially life threatening flash flooding,” according to the National Weather Service.
“NEVER drive through flooded roadways. TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN!” the weather service posted on Twitter.
The flash flood warning is in effect for Broward and northern Miami-Dade at least until 11 a.m. Monday and a flood warning is in effect for northeastern Palm Beach County through 9:45 a.m. All of South Florida also remains under a flood watch through Tuesday evening, and the region is still under a tropical storm warning.
A coastal flood warning was also issued for the Florida Keys, with the most significant flooding expected along the Gulf side of the Lower Keys, and both bay side and oceanside in the Upper Keys, according to the weather service.

South Florida is under a flash flood warning. How does it affect me?
It means that possible life-threatening flash flooding is happening or is expected to begin shortly as Eta continues to douse South Florida with heavy rain.
This could make Monday’s early morning commute extremely hazardous, particularly in urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, near creeks and streams and in other low-lying areas.
Cities that might see flash flooding include Miami, Hialeah, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, Miramar, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach, Davie, Miami Beach, Plantation, Sunrise, Boca Raton, Deerfield Beach, Tamarac, Margate, Coral Gables, Key Biscayne, South Miami and Lighthouse Point.
The National Weather Service is also urging everyone to stay indoors until Eta’s tropical storm conditions subside later Monday.
“The primary concerns are urban and flash flooding due to torrential rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous marine conditions through the day … Tornadoes and waterspouts are also a secondary concern,” the weather service wrote in its flood watch advisory.
The weather service says it has already received significant reports of flooding across Broward County early Monday and that the heavy rain is forecast to continue moving across northern Miami-Dade and Broward, with three to six (6) additional inches of new rainfall expected.
“Reports of nearly impassable streets near Alton Road going into Miami Beach, just north of 1-95, with sides streets completely submerged. Also, reports of street flooding with roadways flooding in the Health District near NW 14th Street and NW 12th Ave with cars stalling out in the roadway,” the weather service wrote.
In total, the weather service is predicting that Broward and Miami-Dade will have seen a total of 5 to 11 inches of rain overnight. Since South Florida is under a flood watch, it also means that flooding will be possible through at least Tuesday evening.
A combination of storm surge and the tide will also cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline from Bonita Beach to Golden Beach, including the Florida Keys, according to the National Hurricane Center.
“The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast in areas of onshore winds, where the surge will be accompanied by dangerous waves,” the hurricane center wrote.
What should I do if I am in a flash flood warning area or driving to one?
Your safest option is to stay indoors until the flash flood warning is over. However, if you need to drive to work or are trying to go home, do not attempt to drive through flooded roads. If you come across a flooded road, turn around and find a different route. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles, according to the weather service.
You should also not be attempting to walk or swim in flooded roads.
“Just six (6) inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot (12” 6+6) of moving water can sweep your vehicle away,” according to Ready.gov, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s national public service campaign on how to respond to potential emergencies.
Make an emergency plan with your family, if you haven’t done so already, including on where you will go if you need to evacuate and move to higher ground. Have a phone readily available and charged to call 911 in case you need to be rescued.
The same goes if you are driving. And make sure you stay informed with the news for potential evacuation orders.

A major rabbi noted the implicit connection between the US elections and the flood of Noah, the connection emphasized by the coincidental and dramatic beginning of the rainy season in Israel. According to the rabbi, the US stands at a crossroads, with one possible path leading to an essential Esau role in the final redemption while the other path leads to a far darker reality.
WHAT’S IN A NAME? RAIN OF BLESSING OR A FLOOD
Rabbi Yoel Schwartz, the head of the Sanhedrin’s Noahide Court and a highly respected Halachic (Torah law) authority, produced a video in which he commented on the divergent possibilities of the US presidential elections.
“The elections were held on the 17th of Cheshvan,” Rabbi Schwartz said. He noted that according to Jewish tradition, rains that caused the flood in the time of Noah began falling on the 17th of Cheshvan. “It was also on that day that here in Israel, the first rains of the season fell in earnest. They should have been rains of blessing but since Biden was elected, these rains became, like the rain on the same day in the time of Noah, a harbinger of the coming flood.”
The rabbi explained that the gematria (Hebrew numerology) of the word for rain (גשם geshem) is 343. The gematria of ‘this is Trump’ (זה טראמפ) equals 342.
“The gematria of ‘flood’(מבול mabool)is 78,” Rabbi Schwartz explained. “The expression ‘Biden arrives’ (בא בידין) equals 79. The two gematrias complete each other. The first is one too few and the second is one too many. They are connected. They are both connected to the rain that fell on election day and to the rain that fell after Noah entered the ark.”
“If Trump is elected, the rains will be a blessing, allowing the fields to flourish and the world will benefit. If Biden is elected, the very same blessings will turn to a flood that destroys the world.”
DEMOCRATS: SINS OF THE FLOOD GENERATION
“The Democrats are spreading the very same sins that forced Noah into the ark,” (five (5) Depravity, Deception, Delusion, Defiance and Denial) Rabbi Schwartz said. “We can see this because the symbol of these people is the rainbow. This was the sign that was put in the heaven to show that the world will never be destroyed by a flood again. In Jewish tradition, the rainbow represents the male organ and the sins that were done with it that led to the flood. They are flaunting their sins in God’s face, knowing that he will not bring another flood. This is epitomized by the Democrats, beginning with Obama, who allowed men to marry men and also allow abortions, the murder of infants.”
“The question we should be asking is not ‘who won’ but, rather, what will be with America,” Rabbi Schwartz explained. “Does God want America to continue? Through Divine intervention, Trump was able to appoint three judges. Appointing judges is one of the Noahide laws and incumbent upon all mankind but just as important was that the Judges appointed by Trump support the Bible. Biden intends to pervert the courts in contravention of the Noahide requirement to have just courts.”
TRUMP: PREPARING THE WORLD FOR REDEMPTION
“If Trump wins, America will have the merit to continue. The danger is that if America flourishes under Trump, the Jews of America will remain there. But it is important that America continues as it has the function of being the Tikkun (fixing) of Esau in the end-of-days. This is why Trump is blond and why the Republicans are red, like Edom. That is why the gematria of Edom (אדום) is 45, the same as ‘redemption’ (הגאולה geula).”
“There are those that learn that the final redemption will be without the help of any other nation. That is not what I learned. And after I saw everything that Trump did, how he attached himself to Israel as president as well as personally, I realized that this could be him taking part in the redemption. All of the peace agreements moved the world towards God being one.”
The rabbi cited the post-Messianic vision of the Prophet Zechariah.

Rabbi Schwartz emphasized that Trump has a hidden merit that enables him to overcome obstacles that would overwhelm others.
“Trump has merit he inherited from his father,” Rabbi Schwartz said. “His father built a synagogue.”

Early data from exit polls conducted with voters Nov. 3 indicate that two-thirds of the LGBT vote went to Democratic Presidential Candidate Joe Biden, who appears to have been poised Friday morning to easily win enough electoral votes to secure victory.
But those same polls also indicated that incumbent Republican President Donald Trump got far twice as many LGBT votes this year as he did in 2016, when he beat Democrat Hillary Clinton for the job.
The exit polls conducted by the National Election Pool for the New York Times and major television networks found that 61% of voters who agreed to be surveyed and who identified as LGBT voted for Biden, while 28% voted for Trump. (The LGBT data was based on approximately 1,100 self-identified voters, or 7% of 15,500 (5+5+5) voters interviewed nationwide outside polling places, early voting sites, or by phone, to include voters by mail.)
In 2016 exit poll data, 78% of LGBT people voted for Clinton, 14% for Trump. In 2012, 76% of LGBT voters supported Democratic President Barack Obama, 22% supported Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
Nadine Smith, the executive director of Equality Florida and a long-time national LGBT activist, reacted to the numbers: “Being LGBTQ isn’t an exemption from racism. Trump stokes white fear in an increasingly diverse America. His immigrant-bashing and persistent racist dog whistle have built him a rabid and dangerous following. Add red-baiting and it is the oldest play in the GOP playbook. It isn’t shocking that some slice of LGBTQ people align with that ideology. After all, we are everywhere, we are part of every community.”
Lorri Jean, head of the nation’s largest LGBT health and community center, the Los Angeles LGBT Center, said people have a knack for voting “against their self-interest.”
“The same dynamic that enables an African American or Latinx person to support an anti-immigrant racist and a woman to support a predatory misogynist, also enables an LGBT person to support the candidate who has done more to harm LGBT people than any president in modern history,” Jean said. “…But mostly, at base of this incongruous behavior is a level of self-loathing — in the case of LGBT people, internalized homophobia — that allows a person to ignore an indisputable level of bigotry, hatred, and actual harm.”
But in the presidential voting itself, Democratic former Vice President Biden appeared, on Friday morning, to have gathered the critical 270 electoral votes required to win the White House. That happened when unofficial vote tallies released in Pennsylvania gave Biden a lead in that state’s popular vote count. The Pennsylvania vote count is not yet complete, but Biden also had a lead on Trump in Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada Friday morning, suggesting very strongly that Biden will be the winner.
Trump has launched lawsuits and recount demands, but political experts do not give those efforts any realistic chance of changing the outcome of the election. Trump’s gay ambassador to Germany, Ric Grenell, was part of the contingent of Republican campaign officials who traveled to Las Vegas Thursday afternoon to complain about voting irregularities in Nevada. Grenell told reporters there that there have been “illegal votes counted” in Nevada. When reporters pressed him for evidence, he told them to ask election officials.
But Las Vegas’ Clark County registrar of voters told MSNBC and other reporters that he has not received any complaints about possible voter fraud.
Grenell and Log Cabin Republicans launched a vigorous campaign this year to rally LGBT support behind Trump, staging several Pride rallies in heavily LGBT cities (with Trump daughter Tiffany speaking to some events), and populating a GetOutSpoken.com website with stories aimed at convincing LGBT supporters to vote Trump.
Biden’s apparent victory signals a likelihood in the coming months that the new administration will undo many of the actions taken by the Trump administration that were seen as hostile to the LGBT community — from withdrawing Obama-era directives that supported protections for LGBT people in various federal agencies, supporting religious organizations’ policies of discriminating against LGBT people, and banning transgender people from serving in the military, to name a few.
Where Trump opposed the Equality Act, President-elect Biden has promised to support it. And in the coming weeks and months, as Biden and Vice-President-Elect Kamala Harris work with their transition team to prepare for launching their administration Jan. 20, many LGBT activists expect LGBT people will be among those considered for various positions.
A Washington Post article this week mentioned gay presidential contender Pete Buttigieg as a possible ambassador to the United Nations and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten as a possible Secretary of Education. Lesbian political strategist Karine Jean-Pierre, who served as a senior advisor to the Biden campaign and, eventually, chief-of-staff of running mate Harris, is a likely pick for some position at the Biden White House.
Meanwhile, in other election news:
U.S. Senate: At the deadline, Democrats and Republicans had secured the same number of seats each: 48. Tallies in Georgia have ensured run-off elections for two U.S. Senate seats there, and results are not yet called in races in North Carolina and Alaska. With Biden in the White House, Democrats could take over the Senate by winning those two special run-off races in Georgia on Jan. 5.
U.S. House: Democrats will continue to hold a majority in the House, albeit a smaller margin: 209 to 190 (with 39 seats undecided). Gay Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney is still holding the lead in a race for his 18th Congressional seat from New York. Maloney has declared victory, though many absentee ballots won’t be counted until next week. Lesbian Rep. Angie Craig has pulled ahead of her Republican challenger with a “significant lead,” according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune Thursday. Assuming they win, Craig and Maloney will be part of a newly enlarged caucus of openly LGBT House members. With the addition of two newcomers — both gay Black men from New York — the LGBT House members will number nine.
LGBT Candidates: The LGBTQ Victory Fund supported 312 LGBT candidates for office Nov. 3, from local sheriffs to members of Congress. As of Thursday evening, the Victory Fund had results for 261 of those races, and the majority over (70%) were victories. The winners include state house and senate candidates in such unexpected states as Arkansas, Idaho, and Montana, including a gay Republican Dan Zwonitzer re-elected to Laramie County’s state house seat in Wyoming; and vice president of the federally recognized Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. The states boasting the largest number of LGBT candidates include California (with 54), Texas (18), Florida (17), Michigan (14), and Illinois (11).
POSTSCRIPT: At 6:45 EDT Thursday evening, Trump held a press conference at the White House to say, “I easily won” the election, claiming “massive victories” in Florida, Indiana, Ohio, and other states. At that moment, Trump was behind Biden by 40 electoral votes and 4 million popular votes nationally. He claimed election officials and Democrats were engaged in “a lot of shenanigans” and that he expects the election will “end up, perhaps, at the highest court in the land.”
MSNBC interrupted its coverage of the remarks very quickly to note that Trump was delivering misstatements of the facts. CNN carried the 20-minute remarks in its entirety but immediately afterwards, its political host Jake Tapper called the speech “pathetic.” CNN political reporter Dana Bash said the remarks were “dangerous” because many of his supporters would believe him. And CNN commentator Abby Phillip said Trump is “trying to take the democratic process down with him.”
