Jesus indicated that one (of many) signs of the end times or the end of the age grace would be that love for one another would grow cold. Matthew 24:12, “And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” This can be interpreted that lawlessness and violence shall abound, including at the civil level.

POLICE chiefs have shared shocking figures showing almost seven officers a day were assaulted in London last month.

The surge in attacks on officers came at the height of the Black Lives Matter protests and counter-protests, and a spate of illegal raves and unlicensed street parties across the capital. Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Sir Stephen House told London Assembly members: “We have seen a distinct step up in assaults on police over the last three to six months.”
Sir Stephen has called for guaranteed jail sentences for thugs who attack emergency workers more than once.
There has been growing concern over violence shown towards frontline staff, with police figures showing that assaults on officers nationwide rose by a quarter in the four weeks to June 7, compared with the previous year.
This was amid a string of coughing or spitting attacks, where COVID-19 has been used as a threat, as well as disorder during protests triggered by the death of George Floyd in the US
In London, 165 Met officers were injured between May 31 and June 24, a period that included protests as well as a string of unlicensed music events.
Sir Stephen told the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee: “My personal preference is that they go to a two-strikes policy, so that if you are convicted a second time in a stipulated period then there is an automatic prison sentence and it should be a decent one to discourage people.
“I think it’s too prevalent among certain groups now that assaulting police is part of the fun, part of the game and society can’t let that happen.”
The Government is consulting on plans to increase the maximum penalty for assaulting an emergency worker from 12 months to two years.
It would be the second time in two years that the sentence has been doubled, after the law was changed in 2018 to bring the maximum sentence to 12 months.
Home Secretary Priti Patel said the consultation sends “a clear and simple message to the vile thugs who assault our emergency workers” that they will not get away with such “appalling behaviour”.
She said: “Our police officers, firefighters and other emergency workers go above and beyond every single day – running towards danger to protect us all.
“They are our frontline heroes who put their lives on the line every single day to keep us safe, and yet some despicable individuals still think it’s acceptable to attack, cough or spit at these courageous public servants.
“This consultation sends a clear and simple message to the vile thugs who assault our emergency workers – you will not get away with such appalling behaviour and you will be subject to the force of the law.”
The Conservatives pledged in their 2019 election manifesto to consult on doubling the maximum sentence for assaulting workers in emergency services.
The Ministry of Justice said that more than 11,000 people were prosecuted for assaulting an emergency worker in 2019. A quarter of those found guilty received a suspended sentence or immediate custody.
Assaults cover acts including being pushed, shoved or spat at, but prosecutions can take place under more serious offences when an emergency worker is seriously injured.
The law change in 2018 also means that when a person is convicted of offences including sexual assault or manslaughter, the judge must consider whether the offence was committed against an emergency worker as an aggravating factor meriting an increase in the sentence
Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said: “Being punched, kicked or spat at should never be part of the job for our valiant emergency workers who put their lives on the line to keep the public safe.
“Now more than ever they must be able to do their extraordinary work without the fear of being attacked or assaulted, which is why we’re determined to look at how our laws can protect them further.
“We will continue to do everything in our power to protect our police, prison officers, firefighters and paramedics – and ensure those who seek to harm them feel the full force of the law.”
