Ebola crisis: Virus hits city dubbed ‘gateway to the world’ in ‘game changer’ for outbreak

Blog note. Jesus indicated that ‘fearful sights’ (various natural disasters) would occur leading up to the time known as the Tribulation and Great Tribulation (a combined seven year period of great destruction on earth). Although these types of things have occurred in the past for centuries and thousands of years, they could be identified as the ‘season of the times’ due to the ferociousness of these events. They would be occurring in greater intensity, severity, frequency, size, duration, scope … just like the pains that a woman experiences in labor the farther along she is in the labor process. We are in the ‘season of the times’ that comes just before the seven (7) year Tribulation/Great Tribulation period
… And great earthquakes shall be in diverse places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. (Luke 21:11).
… And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; (Luke 21:25)
… Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken; (Luke 21:26)
… This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. (2 Timothy 3:1)
Jesus is giving a series of prophecies about what to look for as the age of grace comes to a close. These verses are several of many such prophecies from throughout the Bible. 2017 was the worst year in recorded history for the intensity, frequency, severity, duration and occurrence of a large number of severe natural disasters worldwide. Earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones, torrential flooding, unprecedented wildfires in unusual places, devastating droughts, excessive/scorching heat setting records everywhere, record snowfalls in Europe and Russia. Snow in the Arabia. This list can go on. Most studied Eschatologists believe these ‘fearful sights’ and massive natural disasters are all part of the ‘CONVERGENCE’ of signs that this Biblical and prophetic age is closing. Most people who study prophecy are familiar with the routine reference(s) made that these things will be like a woman having labor pains, growing in intensity, frequency, size and duration.

Ebola crisis: Virus hits city dubbed ‘gateway to the world’ in ‘game changer’ for outbreak

THE first Ebola case in Goma, a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, could be a “game-changer” in the fight against the spread of the deadly virus, according to health officials.

Goma is dubbed a “gateway to the region and the world” with the city a major transport hub on the border with Rwanda and the risk of the virus reaching other parts of the region “remains very high”, health experts said. A pastor who arrived in the city on Sunday, having travelled south by bus from Butembo, 186 miles (300km) away, tested positive for Ebola at a treatment centre. The country’s health ministry said all other 18 passengers and the driver had been traced and would be vaccinated on Monday.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organisation (WHO), spoke at a “high-level event” in the DRC on Monday, attended by health minister Dr Oly Ilunga and the UK’s international development secretary Rory Stewart.

Dr Tedros said: “The identification of the case in Goma could potentially be a game-changer in this epidemic.

“Goma is a city of two million people, near the border with Rwanda, and is a gateway to the region and the world.

“We are confident in the measures we are put in place and hope that we will see no further transmission of Ebola in Goma.

“Nevertheless, we cannot be too careful.”

The WHO emergency committee has been ordered to reconvene to assess the threat, in light of the latest development.

The DRC Ebola outbreak, which started last year, has killed 1,665 people.

Efforts to stop the spread have seen more than 161,000 people vaccinated and 71 million travellers screened.

The measures have “prevented a much larger emergency” according to Dr Tedros.

He said: “Although the risk of spread within DRC and in the region remains very high, we should not underestimate the magnitude of what has been achieved so far.”

Dr Tedros said violence against responders seeking to stem the spread of the virus “gives Ebola and opportunity to spread”.

Two community health workers were murdered in their home in Beni, northeastern DRC, the health ministry said on Monday.

Dr Harouna Djingarey, infectious disease programme manager for the WHO’s regional office in eastern DRC, said Goma’s vaccination campaign, which kicked off on Monday, was vital to preventing Ebola reaching further afield.

He said: “It’s the door of this region to the rest of the world.  “From here, you can fly to go to everywhere in the world. If we don’t have the control over the contacts, some high-risk contacts may fly, take a plane and go somewhere.”
