Pestilence Update

Generation Zika. Born in the shadow of a sinister virus pestilence. Part 1 in a series.

Blog note. Jesus indicated that ‘fearful sights’ (various natural disasters) would occur leading up to the time known as the Tribulation and Great Tribulation (a combined seven year period of great destruction on earth). Although these types of things have occurred in the past for centuries and thousands of years, they could be identified as the ‘season of the times’ due to the ferociousness of these events. They would be occurring in greater intensity, severity, frequency, size, duration, scope … just like the pains that a women experiences in labor the farther along she is in the labor process. We are in the ‘season of the times’ that comes just before the seven (7) year Tribulation/Great Tribulation period.

… And great earthquakes shall be in diverse places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. (Luke 21:11).

… And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; (Luke 21:25)

… Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken; (Luke 21:26)

… This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. (2 Timothy 3:1)

Jesus is giving a series of prophecies about what to look for as the age of grace comes to a close. These verses are several of many such prophecies from throughout the Bible. 2017 was the worst year in recorded history for the intensity, frequency, severity, duration and occurrence of a large number of severe natural disasters worldwide. Earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones, torrential flooding, unprecedented wildfires in unusual places, devastating droughts, excessive/scorching heat setting records everywhere, record snowfalls in Europe and Russia. Snow in the Arabia. This list can go on. Most studied Eschatologists believe these ‘fearful sights’ and massive natural disasters are all part of the ‘CONVERGENCE’ of signs that this Biblical and prophetic age is closing. Most people who study prophecy are familiar with the routine reference(s) made that these things will be like a woman having labor pains that occur in greater severity, frequency, size and duration prior to giving birth. End of note.

The Telegraph.

Two-and-a-half years ago, a previously little-known virus left its mark on thousands of pregnant women and the babies they carried. Rob Crilly returns to the epicentre of the Zika outbreak to discover deformities are just the tip of the healthcare iceberg. Pictures by Simon Townsley

Little Duda had a restless night. She is asleep now beneath a spotted blanket as her doting grandmother rummages in her handbag for a mobile phone. But rather than first words or first steps to show off to friends and relatives, Miriam Pereira uses the smartphone to record a different type of milestone, the sort she brings to show doctors and nurses. The screen reveals Duda in the grip of an epileptic fit. Her head rocks back. She shrieks as if in fear and her eyes roll upwards.

Duda is a member of Brazil’s Generation Zika, born two years and seven months ago as a previously little-known virus left its mark on thousands of pregnant woman and the babies they carried. She was born with debilitating brain damage. Zika scarred her development and prevented her head reaching its proper size. It measured just 10 inches in circumference at birth – at least three inches less than average.

When we think of Zika, we picture children like Duda born with microcephaly. But now evidence is mounting that the damage caused by Zika may be much wider. Children with conditions ranging from failing eyesight and autism to joint stiffness and unexplained infections are emerging at a frightening rate. Ernesto Marques, an infectious disease expert at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Recife – ground zero for the Zika outbreak – says microcephaly may be only the “tip of an iceberg”.

“There’s much more underneath that we are not seeing yet. I’m not trying to create panic or worry but just alert that there is more to come,” he says. “We don’t know how big this is going to be.

No-one is willing to predict numbers with confidence; the data is simply not there yet. But the worst case scenario, discussed privately by doctors and other experts, suggests five times more babies than the 3,000 already identified could be affected, with problems often emerging only two or more years after birth. These worst case estimates are based on studies that suggest 80 per cent of mothers infected with Zika during pregnancy did not know and did not realise their babies were at risk.

Almost as quickly as it appeared, Zika disappeared. The initial 2015 outbreak centered on Recife, a city in the north-east of Brazil, and it sparked a global media storm as an epidemic of birth deformities emerged and international health organisations scrambled to prevent a global pandemic.
