 Background Note: The Burning Man Festival takes place in Back Rock City, somewhere in the desert North of Reno, Nevada, United States. The “festival” started out on a beach in 1986 with the burning effigy of a stick man on the Summer Solstice (per the festival’s website timeline). Twenty (20) random people or strangers walking on the beach witnessed the burning of the stickman who was 8 feet tall. Fast forward to 2017, almost 70,000 people (from around the world) attend the Burning Man Festival Community in the desert. The stick man or burning man effigy has grown to 105 feet tall. Burning Man is the ultimate festival, taking place in the Nevada desert. Started in 1986, the festival has grown into a cultural phenomenon and has inspired imitation festivals around the globe. Burning Man is about escaping the confines of capitalism and freeing oneself from the everyday things that confine creativity and imagination. Attendees set up all sorts of sculptures, art cars and other creations as well as ritual tents, DJ booths and anything else you can imagine for revelers to experience and interact with.  Running from the last Sunday of August to the first Monday of September, everything leads to the culminating event: the burning of a large wooden effigy representing “the Man.” End of note.

 #2. Thoughts, Slogans and Ideologies of Burning Man Community Festival 2018: Shades of Mystery Religion Babylon, “Do As Thou Wilst”?

• Galaxia, the 2018 Temple, measures its progress — and success — in people and triangles. A whole lotta triangles. The build crews in San Francisco and Reno have recently finished the 2,400 wooden triangles that will make up the giant curves of this year’s Temple. The triangles — and the Temple — tip their hat to the theme of machines but remain firmly focused on people. Their design has created a highly accessible Temple where everything is a doorway, and their “volunteer-friendly geometry” has enabled people from all walks of life and skill sets to help build. Drawing people together is what Temples do best, and Galaxia is no exception. Its crew has attracted people from around the globe, with Burners from England, Israel, China, France, Spain, Italy, Israel and the U.S. joining forces.
• Larry Harvey once famously told American TV journalist Charlie Rose: “So when they say we’re a cult, we reply that it’s a self-service cult. You wash your own brain.” But Burners not only wash their own brains, they also curate and create their own city and experiences. And this radically self-expressive, self-reliant and participatory approach informs how we as a community and an organization have chosen to honor Larry too. On 21 June, Burners around the world created a myriad of different tributesto say #thankslarry as part of the Global Celebration and Day of Gratitude — from kids birthday dos and cowboy-hat blacklight parties to beach get-togethers, storytelling groups and piano gatherings. And, of course, effigy burns.
