Commentary: “great city” is a descriptive reference for the physical city of Babylon. This is not a descriptive reference to Mystery Religion Babylon. Babylon City is described as “great” (not in a positive sense, but in a negative sense) because of what the city does throughout the earth during the Tribulation. It serves as a home-base for the Mystery Religion of Babylon. It serves as the capital for the Babylon kingdom. The city is decked out in massive, earthly wealth and material splendor. The glory of Jesus Christ or God is not found anywhere in Babylon City. Worship of Jesus Christ and God is not found anywhere in the city.

The city is home to all sorts of foul, evil/unclean spirits and likewise men. As far as the values of evil men, the great city of Babylon has it all. Everything evil can be found in Babylon City, the “great city.” Nonetheless, Babylon City is crushed within one hour during the Day of the Lord’s return. A massive, worldwide earthquake splits this city into three parts. The destruction so great and consuming, that smoke of her burning can be seen many miles away at sea. Businessmen and merchants don’t want to go anywhere near the “great city” because they are afraid that they might receive the same fate due to association.

They lament, because their best customer just got hammered and their gravy train has ended. Thus, their profits and gain have so ended. So much for the “great city.” It was quickly thrown away and destroyed just like a giant mill-stone thrown into the sea. Never to be found again.

Fawning media coverage of Mohammed bin Salman prior to the Khashoggi murder was not an accident. THE CROWN PRINCE AND HIS ADVISERS CHOSE CAREFULLY TO FIND THE WRITERS AND REPORTERS THAT WOULD AMPLIFY THEIR PROPAGANDA. The authors describe how the prince’s advisers made a list of journalists according to their level of influence and friendliness. The most influential ones that they knew they could rely on were Tom Friedman of the Times, David Ignatius of the Post, Brett Baier of Fox News, and Norah O’Donnell of CBS News. Friedman and O’Donnell stood out in 2018 for their unusually obsequious coverage of the crown prince before and during his visit to the United States.

The book is useful in showing how the Saudis cultivated Trump and the people around him at the beginning, especially Jared Kushner and Steve Bannon. The authors show how easy it was for Mohammed bin Salman to manipulate them by appealing to their fear and loathing of Iran. The Saudis realized earlier than most other governments that the key to gaining Trump’s support was through flattery and promises of big deals, and in exchange the president would give them virtually anything they wanted. For his part, Mohammed bin Salman had “grown up in an extended family dominated by striving, geriatric princes who were terrified of humiliation, desperate for respect, and obsessed with adding to their inherited wealth.” It is no surprise that he knew exactly how to deal with someone like Trump.

Senior executives leading Saudi Arabia‘s Neom megacity project have been accused of racism, misogyny and corruption, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal published on Wednesday. 

The $500bn new Saudi megacity – which organisers claim will be 33 times the size of New York City – is planned to include a 170km straight-line city, an eight-sided city that floats on water, and a ski resort with a folded vertical village, amongst other grandiose projects.

Wayne Borg, Neom’s Australian managing director in charge of media, has made several discriminatory and racist comments, the report revealed. 

In one incident, after three workers on the project had died, Borg said: “A whole bunch of people die so we’ve got to have a meeting on a Sunday night.”

He went on to call South Asian migrant workers at Neom “fucking morons”, adding “that is why white people are at the top of the pecking order”. The comments were made on a phone call, the audio of which was obtained by the WSJ. 

In another conversation regarding the worker deaths, Borg said, “you can’t train for stupidity” and “the white blokes are at the top of the tree”.

One of the workers reportedly died due to a falling pipe, while a wall collapsed on another. The third worker died from mishandling explosives, according to current and former employees cited in the report. 

In a separate incident, Borg was summoned by human resources after calling a Black female employee a “Black shit”, according to former workers at Neom. Borg denied using the phrase. 

In a message to the employee in question, Borg reportedly said “I miss you” and your “arse is better than Beyonce’s”, with kiss emojis, according to a summary of the employees’ grievances. 

In a meeting about the incident, Borg referred to “that fucking episode I had with that Black bitch” – a comment that was heard in an audio recording and published by the WSJ. 

According to other audio clips, Borg referred to women from the Gulf as “transvestites” and made lewd jokes about Islam and sexual positions. 

‘I DRIVE EVERYBODY LIKE A SLAVE’

In a statement to the WSJ, Neom said it had a zero tolerance approach to inappropriate workplace behaviour, and would thoroughly investigate allegations of wrongdoing. A representative of Borg did not respond to a request for comment.

THE REPORT STATED THAT OTHER SENIOR EXECUTIVES AT NEOM WERE ACCUSED OF OR INVESTIGATED OVER A NUMBER OF ISSUES, INCLUDING CORRUPTION AND EMBEZZLEMENT.

One of those Neom executives, Antoni Vives, was convicted in 2021 by a Spanish court of corruption during a previous job in Barcelona’s city hall. He had pleaded guilty to giving a friend a “no-show job” worth around $165,000 over four years, and agreed to a two year suspended prison sentence. 

Vives resigned from Neom but was convinced to return, according to former employees. The sources said that VIVES BUILT A BOND WITH SAUDI CROWN PRINCE MOHAMMED BIN SALMAN, WHO REPORTEDLY SAID HE DID NOT CARE ABOUT VIVES’ CRIMES AS LONG AS THEY WERE NOT COMMITTED IN SAUDI ARABIA. 

In another reported incident, Vives argued with a construction manager and the two men subsequently wrestled each other. 

Vives is now being sought by Spanish prosecutors on separate corruption charges.

Prosecutors are seeking a six-year prison sentence over accusations of criminal conspiracy, fraud and perversion of justice. Vives did not respond to a request for comment.

At least 47 members of the Howeitat tribe in Saudi Arabia have been either arrested or detained for resisting eviction to make way for the Neom megacity, according to a new report. 

Human rights organisation, Alqst, published  (5) “THE DARK SIDE OF NEOM” on Thursday, OUTLINING THE NAMES OF ALL THOSE DETAINED OR DISAPPEARED FOR SPEAKING OUT AGAINST THE PROJECT, AND DETAILING HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES COMMITTED AGAINST EVICTEES.

THE PROJECT IS BEING BUILT IN THE TABUK PROVINCE OF NORTHWESTERN SAUDI ARABIA, WHERE THE DISPLACED AL-HOWEITAT TRIBE HAD, UNTIL RECENTLY, LIVED FOR CENTURIES. 

The report found that 15 members of the tribe had been sentenced to between 15 and 50 years in prison, while five were sentenced to death. A further 19 were detained with no further information on their fate, while eight were released. 

THE REPORT NOTES A MARKED EXTENSION IN JAIL SENTENCES SINCE MID-2022, COINCIDING WITH THE REHABILITATION OF SAUDI CROWN PRINCE MOHAMMED BIN SALMAN WITHIN THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY, following years of diplomatic isolation in the aftermath of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

“The correlation is clear,” Lina al-Hathloul, head of monitoring and communications at Alqst told Middle East Eye during the launch of the report in London. “IT’S CLEAR THAT THE MORE [CROWN PRINCE] MBS IS REHABILITATED, THE WORSE THINGS GET”. 

Abdulilah Rashid Ibrahim al-Huwaiti and Abdullah Dakhil Allah al-Huwaiti were both sentenced to 50 years in prison and a 50-year travel ban for supporting their family’s refusal to be forcibly evicted to make way for the construction of Neom, as MEE reported in September.

Maha Suleiman al-Qarani al-Huwaiti, the only known woman among those detained, was arrested in February 2021 for tweeting about the cost of living and mourning the death of Huwaiti. 

She was initially sentenced to one year in prison, which was increased to three years on appeal. In August 2022, in violation of Saudi law, she was retried on the same charges and sentenced to 23 years in prison. 

IN APRIL 2020, TRIBAL ACTIVIST ABDUL-RAHIM AL-HOWEITI WAS SHOT DEAD SHORTLY AFTER MAKING VIDEOS PROTESTING AGAINST HIS EVICTION TO MAKE WAY FOR THE MEGACITY.

Ahmed Abdel Nasser al-Huwaiti, nephew of Abdul-Rahim, was arrested in October 2020 for expressing sympathy for his uncle’s death and “seeking to destabilise and disrupt the social fabric and national cohesion”, according to the report. 

He was initially charged with five years in prison, which was increased to 21 years upon appeal. 

Among the five known to be sentenced to death is Shadli Ahmed Mahmoud al-Huwaiti, brother of Abdul Rahim. 

Shadli was initially forcibly disappeared for two months in late 2020, before being charged with “establishing a terrorist organisation to rebel against the ruler” and “creating a Twitter account to tear apart national cohesion”.

In May 2022, he went on a hunger strike after being placed in solitary confinement in Dhaban Prison and was then force-fed via a tube in his stomach.

“THESE HARSH PUNISHMENTS INFLICTED ON MEMBERS OF THE HUWAITAT TRIBE ARE PART OF A WIDER TREND THAT BEGAN IN THE SUMMER OF 2022, OF INDIVIDUALS BEING SENTENCED TO LENGTHY PRISON TERMS – OF UP TO 50 YEARS – SIMPLY FOR SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVITY CALLING FOR SOCIAL AND POLITICAL REFORM,” the report said. 

It noted that SAUDI AUTHORITIES HAD “DRAMATICALLY INCREASED” THE USE OF THE DEATH PENALTY IN 2022, COMPARED TO 2021, EXECUTING TWICE AS MANY PEOPLE. 

“THESE DEVELOPMENTS, TAKEN TOGETHER, REPRESENT A SHARP DETERIORATION IN THE HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION FOLLOWING THE NORMALISATION OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH MOHAMMED BIN SALMAN,” Alqst said.

Hathloul told MEE that following visits by former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US President Joe Biden to Saudi Arabia last year, there was “A MASS WAVE OF EXECUTIONS” AND “LENGTHY SENTENCES THAT WERE UNPRECEDENTED”. 

“THE GOVERNMENT DOESN’T EVEN WANT TO HIDE IT, IT’S BEEN CLEAR TO THE PEOPLE: I HAVE A GREEN LIGHT TO REPRESS YOU. YOU ARE MUZZLED AND THE WORLD IS PROTECTING ME.”

EVICTIONS BREACH INTERNATIONAL LAW

The report lays out how authorities evicted residents, often against their will, in contravention of international law. 

In March 2020, authorities sent in special forces, sometimes 40 vehicles at a time, to raid the homes of those resisting eviction and intimidate them. 

Saudi forces arrested 20 residents for coming to the defence of a kidnapped child, the report said. The minor was allegedly abducted by secret police after he wrote the slogan “We will not be moved” on walls. 

The report revealed that financial incentives of up to 100,000 riyals were offered to state-appointed tribal leaders on the condition that they publicly condemned Abdul-Rahim’s resistance to eviction. 

Meanwhile, authorities rejected some locals’ requests to be resettled in close proximity to their former homes, and instead offered 620,000 riyals in compensation to be rehoused further away. In reality, though, Alqst reported, recipients were offered as little as 17,000 riyals. 

Most evictees were forced to buy homes in poorer neighbourhoods in the Tabuk province because of the low compensation received, it added. 

The expropriations of homes contravene the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam, both of which Saudi Arabia has ratified, according to the report. 

Alqst found that authorities acted in a discriminatory manner against tribespeople and did not respect due process, in violation of several international conventions. 

The report notes that several global companies have provided consultancy services and signed contract agreements with Neom, and therefore “bear a solemn corporate human rights responsibility”. 

“ALQST calls on businesses involved in Neom to…reassess your involvement in the Neom project, and be prepared to cease your engagement, unless and until the adverse human rights impacts can be addressed,” it stated. 

Among the companies said to be involved in Neom are Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey & Co, Samsung, and Oliver Wyman.

Commentary: THE BIBLE MAKES IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT THE TRIBULATION SAINTS ARE THOSE PEOPLE THAT BECOME CHRISTIANS DURING THE PERIOD OF THE ANTICHRIST’S REIGN ON EARTH, OVER THE SEVEN (7) YEAR PERIOD. How do they become Saints in the eyes of Christ? They believe in and accept Christ as their Savior and for the forgiveness of their sins. They do NOT take the mark of the beast or the antichrist. They do NOT worship the beast/antichrist. They do NOT worship his image. They DO witness to the word of God and Jesus. They ARE martyred by beheading for believing in Jesus and witnessing for Him. They DO share in many of blessings and rewards that are also awarded to Christians from the Church Age (at the Rapture/Harpazo and Bema Seat Judgement).

Saudi Arabia has executed 100 people since the beginning of 2024 through to 15 July, the European Saudi Organisation for Human Rights (ESOHR) said on Monday.

According to the rights group, which monitors executions in the kingdom, the rate amounts to an execution nearly every two days, representing a 42 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023, which recorded 172 executions.

ESOHR said that the surge indicates an “INSISTENCE ON USING THE DEATH PENALTY EXTENSIVELY, IN VIOLATION OF INTERNATIONAL LAWS AND ITS OFFICIAL COMMITMENTS.”

Despite the rise in execution numbers, the group said that they had identified only three individuals facing imminent execution, indicating that MANY EXECUTIONS ARE TAKING PLACE IN SECRET.

According to Reprieve, which documents death penalty cases in the kingdom, in many cases the families of the victims are not aware they were on death row.

ESOHR noted that in 19 of the cases they monitored, THE TYPE OF SENTENCE AND THE COURT THAT ISSUED IT ARE OFTEN CONCEALED IN OFFICIAL REPORTING.

THEY ADDED THAT THIS LACK OF TRANSPARENCY IS “A NEW FORM OF MANIPULATION BY SAUDI ARABIA TO EVADE ITS COMMITMENTS AND CONTINUE USING THE DEATH PENALTY AS A TOOL”. 

In 2023, a joint report by ESOHR and Reprieve revealed that RIYADH’S EXECUTION RATE HAS ALMOST DOUBLED SINCE KING SALMAN AND HIS SON MOHAMMED BIN SALMAN CAME TO POWER IN 2015. BETWEEN 2015 AND 2022, EXECUTIONS SURGED BY 82 PERCENT.

In February this year, SEVEN SAUDI MEN WERE KILLED IN A MASS EXECUTION, THE HIGHEST NUMBER PUT TO DEATH IN ONE DAY SINCE 81 WERE KILLED IN MARCH 2022.

According to the report, SAUDI AUTHORITIES ROUTINELY USED THE DEATH PENALTY TO QUASH POLITICAL DISSIDENTS, in contravention of international law which stipulates it should only be used for the most serious crimes.

According to Reprieve, foreign nationals, including female domestic workers and drug offenders, are “disproportionately” targeted.

Seven Saudi men were executed on Tuesday, the highest number put to death in one day since 81 were killed in March 2022.

The Specialised Criminal Court (SCC) convicted the men on terrorism charges, accusing them of betraying “their homeland, threatening its stability and endangering its security”, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported, citing the Interior Ministry.

The men’s names were listed in the SPA announcement, which is often the only information released about executions in the kingdom, but with little further detail.

Riyadh has now executed 31 people this year, after putting at least 172 people to death in 2023, rights groups monitoring executions in Saudi Arabia have said.

There were no public records or media reporting of any of the cases of the men executed on Tuesday, the European-Saudi Organisation for Human Rights (ESOHR) and UK-based Reprieve told Middle East Eye.

“IT APPEARS THAT THESE MEN WERE TRIED, CONVICTED, SENTENCED AND EXECUTED IN COMPLETE SECRECY,” said Jeed Basyouni, who leads Reprieve’s work in the Middle East and North Africa.

Over the past eight years, Duaa Dhainy, a researcher with ESOHR, said her organisation only had knowledge about three percent of death penalty cases before executions were carried out.

“NGO and public information about people on death row is very limited,” Dhainy said.

Those executed in 2024 include 10 men convicted of terrorism charges by the SCC, which has been criticised for punishing activists and protesters.

Among those was Awn Hassan Abu Abdullah, who was executed on 30 January.

Abdullah was accused of joining a terrorist cell and financing terrorism, but ESOHR has reported that it believes he was arrested, tried and executed for “legitimate activies”, including expressing his opinions and participating in gatherings.

Basyouni said while the official announcement lists Tuesday’s executions as terrorism cases, that definition has been used to “include children who joined protests, critics of the regime and people who merely disagreed publicly with Mohammed bin Salman”.

“IT IS EXTREMELY DISTURBING THAT THE SAUDI AUTHORITIES ARE EXECUTING PRISONERS EN MASSE AGAIN, CLOSE TO THE TWO YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE WORST MASS EXECUTION IN THE KINGDOM’S HISTORY,” Basyouni said.

She noted next week’s LEAP conference which will draw technology industry figures to Riyadh and the Formula One in Jeddah the week after.

“Everyone involved in these two events should know that just by being in Saudi Arabia and turning a blind eye to mass executions, THEY ARE MAKING FURTHER KILLINGS MORE LIKELY AND OFFERING INTERNATIONAL LEGITIMACY TO A DEEPLY REPRESSIVE REGIME,” she said.

SAUDI ARABIA: HIGHEST EXECUTION TOLL IN DECADES AS AUTHORITIES PUT TO DEATH 198 PEOPLE

Saudi Arabian authorities have put to death over 198 individuals so far in 2024, the highest number of executions recorded in the country since 1990, Amnesty International said today.

Despite repeated promises to limit the use of the death penalty, Saudi authorities have ramped up executions while routinely failing to abide by international fair trial standards and safeguards for defendants. Executions for drug-related crimes soared this year, with 53 carried out so far – with an average of one execution every two days in July alone – rising from just two drug-related executions in 2023. AUTHORITIES HAVE ALSO WEAPONISED THE DEATH PENALTY TO SILENCE POLITICAL DISSENT, punishing citizens from the country’s Shi’a minority who supported “anti-government” protests between 2011 and 2013.

“SAUDI ARABIA’S AUTHORITIES ARE PURSUING A RELENTLESS KILLING SPREE DISPLAYING A CHILLING DISREGARD FOR HUMAN LIFE WHILE PROMOTING AN EMPTY-WORDED CAMPAIGN TO REBRAND THEIR IMAGE,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.

“THE DEATH PENALTY IS AN ABHORRENT AND INHUMAN PUNISHMENT WHICH SAUDI ARABIA HAS USED AGAINST PEOPLE FOR A WIDE RANGE OF OFFENCES, INCLUDING POLITICAL DISSENT and drug-related charges following grossly unfair trials. The authorities must immediately establish a moratorium on executions, and order re-trials for those on death row in line with international standards without resorting to the death penalty.”

EXECUTED FOR SUPPORTING “ANTI-GOVERNMENT PROTESTS”

On 17 August 2024, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) announced the execution of Abdulmajeed al-Nimr, a retired traffic police officer, for terrorism-related offences related to joining Al-Qaeda. However, his court documents tell another story about his charges, which are related to his alleged support for “anti-government” protests in Saudi Arabia’s Shi’a majority Eastern Province.

According to the court document reviewed by Amnesty International, he was initially sentenced by the Specialized Criminal Court to nine years in prison on 25 October 2021 on charges of “seeking to destabilize the social fabric and national unity by participating in demonstrations … supporting riots, chanting slogans against the state and its rulers”, as well as “dissenting against the decision to arrest and prosecute wanted individuals”,  and joining a WhatsApp group that included individuals wanted for security purposes. Upon appeal, his punishment was increased to a death sentence. The Specialized Criminal Court did not make a single reference to Al-Nimr’s involvement with Al-Qaeda. The discrepancy in the charges announced by the Saudi Press Agency and Al-Nimr’s court documents shows a striking lack of transparency in judicial proceedings of death penalty cases.

After Al-Nimr’s arrest on 28 October 2017 he was denied access to a lawyer for around two years during his interrogations and pre-trial detention. He spent three months in detention without being informed of the reason for his arrest.

According to a court document, Al-Nimr’s conviction was based solely on a “confession” he said was obtained under duress, including being detained in solitary confinement for a month and a half.

In 2024, Saudi authorities have so far executed 53 individuals solely for drug-related offences after only two executions for drug-related offences were recorded in the country in 2023. Between May and June, three foreign nationals from Syria and Nigeria were executed for drug-related offences. The surge has continued since July, with 53 individuals executed so far solely for drug-related offences across the country, 38 of whom were foreign nationals.

This spike in executions for drug-related offences raises serious fears for the fate of dozens of prisoners convicted of similar offences and currently on death row. Today, the authorities executed two Egyptian men who were detained in Tabuk prison for drug-related crimes.

Amnesty International documented the cases of four Egyptian men on death row in Tabuk Prison for drug-related offences. The four individuals are among a group of at least 50 individuals on death row for drug-related crimes in Tabuk Prison, the majority of whom are Egyptian.

This month, Omar (pseudonym), one of the detained men told Amnesty International: “I’ve been on death row for seven years for the possession of eight grams of hashish. I was also convicted of the intent to receive drugs, which I didn’t confess to and have denied. Where else in the world is someone sentenced to death for this?”

Authorities sentenced the men to death in January 2019 on various drug-related charges and upheld the sentence in November 2019. Since then, the men have not received any information about the status of their case, and whether their death sentence has been upheld by the Supreme Court.

Omar added: “I have asked all governmental entities who may know- from the Ministry of Interior to the Supreme Judicial Council, and no one could tell me the status of my case. My son grew up without me for seven years. This makes me feel like I’m already a dead man… A few days ago, I shared a final meal with one of my fellow inmates before he was taken to be executed the next morning. He didn’t know about his impending execution until that morning. All I want to know is the status of my case.”

According to the court document analysed by Amnesty International, the four men had no legal representation throughout the pre-trial detention, interrogations and preliminary trial resulting in their death sentence. Following their conviction, the court stated that they have the right to a legal representative to submit appeal proceedings. However, the court only appointed a lawyer for one of those men.

Omar told Amnesty International that during his appeal session, the judge told him he was unable to object to his conviction because you don’t have a lawyer.” Omar submitted an appeal myself to the Supreme Judicial Council himself after the conviction as held but does not know if it was received it or not. He still has no lawyer.

“SENTENCING PEOPLE TO DEATH FOLLOWING UNFAIR TRIALS THAT LACK TRANSPARENCY AND DUE PROCESS RIGHTS IS ABHORRENT, AND HIGHLIGHTS THE GRIM REALITY IN THE COUNTRY. The only way to polish the country’s image is through genuine reform and adherence to human rights and international law. Anything less than that will leave these repressive milestones at the forefront of any campaign,” said Agnès Callamard.

Amnesty International opposes the death penalty in all cases without exception, regardless of the nature or circumstances of the crime; guilt, innocence or characteristics of the individual; or the method used by the state to carry out the execution.

The SPA today confirmed the 198th execution carried out this year. The real number of executions may be higher given SPA under-reported on the actual number of executions in 2022.

In 2022, Saudi Arabia executed 196 people – the highest annual number of executions that Amnesty International has recorded in the country in the last 30 years. In March 2022, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said that the country has “got rid of” the death penalty except for cases where it is mandated under Sharia. Yet, in November 2022, the authorities carried the first executions for drug-related offences in nearly three years, reversing a moratorium on executions for such offences which was announced by the Saudi Human Rights Commission in 2021.

Earlier this year, Amnesty International analysed the country’s draft penal code, which codifies death penalty as a punishment and continues to enable judges to use their discretion to impose death sentences for murder, rape, blasphemy or apostasy.

Commentary: When Christ is using the term patience, he is referring to the patience Christians have with one another. He is referring to the patience he has for us. He is acknowledging our patience in waiting for him and our effort to seek his will and word. It takes time, and patience to effectively study the word of God, and to wait and wait, and wait on God to answer a faithful prayer. Something that is almost gone in our culture today. Christ ranks patience, up there with faith works, charity, service and faith. It is that important, and overlooked by many Christians.

IT IS BECAUSE OF THIS, CHRIST REPEATS HIMSELF SEVEN TIMES TO SIGNIFY ITS IMPORTANCE. As an American, I’m just as guilty of this as most of us in our culture. Time is too short, things don’t go fast enough. I stress out when I’m stuck in a two- hour commute on the freeway, just to get downtown. We want things now, not later. Eternity? What’s that? I’m trying to make it through the day and get the kids to soccer practice by 6:00pm (or earlier).

As I said, patience and time are a lost commodity today, and Christ knows this. Just as an Olympic athlete (as of the time I write this) has had to train hard and for a long time; they know they will have to be patient for their performance to improve, for their times to come down or for their speed or for strength or accuracy to improve. Results and improvements do not happen overnight. It takes patience, dedication and discipline. The same skills Christ wants us to acquire in this life for his eternal kingdom. Physical training for the Olympics and spiritual Christian discipleship both take great patience to overcome the stumbling blocks and setbacks that eventually befall all of us. We have to pick ourselves up, to have the patience to keep moving forward and to not give in to the temptations and idols of this world. Christ knows how hard it is to acquire the skill of patience and values this attribute greatly.

GLOBAL: SAUDI ARABIA BID FOR THE 2034 FIFA WORLD CUP WHITEWASHES HUMAN RIGHTS RECORD WHILE JOINT BID FOR 2030 LEAVES KEY GAPS

Saudi Arabia has failed to meet FIFA’s own human rights requirements in its bid for the 2034 men’s World Cup, Amnesty International said today following the publication of its ‘Bid Book’ for the 48-team tournament. Key gaps also remain in plans for the 2030 World Cup to be held in Morocco, Portugal and Spain.  

An analysis of the ‘Bid Books’ and tournament ‘HUMAN RIGHTS PLANS’ PUBLISHED YESTERDAY EVENING SHOWED THAT SAUDI ARABIA HAS STILL FAILED TO COMMIT TO FUNDAMENTAL REFORM OF ITS EXPLOITATIVE LABOUR SYSTEM, OR TAKE ANY ACTION TO IMPROVE FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, END THE REPRESSION OF HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS.

“FIFA set clear human rights standards that any bidding country must meet, yet it is clear that Saudi Arabia’s bid for the 2034 World Cup currently falls far short. The bid’s human rights plan simply ignores many of the enormous risks associated with hosting a mega sporting event in a country with such an atrocious human rights record,” said Steve Cockburn, Amnesty International’s Head of Labour Rights and Sport.  “Saudi Arabia’s World Cup human rights plan says nothing about the brutal muzzling of human rights activists or criminalization of LGBTI people, nor does it outline whether or how it will put an end in practice to the abusive Kafala system that exploits migrant workers. It is astonishing that such blatant risks can be so flagrantly ignored.  

“Without urgent action to improve Saudi Arabia’s human rights protections, it is highly likely that the 2034 World Cup will be blighted by forced labour, repression and discrimination – with a brutal human cost. FIFA must now work with the Saudi authorities to obtain legally binding agreements to address the human rights risks in full before any final decision is made in December, or be prepared to walk away. THE SAUDI AUTHORITIES SHOULD ALSO DEMONSTRATE A COMMITMENT TO HUMAN RIGHTS BY RELEASING ACTIVISTS WHO HAVE BEEN IMPRISONED SOLELY FOR EXPRESSING THEIR OPINION.”

Saudi Arabia: Authorities hosting Internet Governance Forum while imprisoning online critics exposes deep hypocrisy

SAUDI ARABIA’ S AUTHORITIES MUST IMMEDIATELY RELEASE ALL THOSE ARBITRARILY DETAINED SOLELY FOR EXPRESSING THEIR VIEWS ONLINE AHEAD OF THE UPCOMING INTERNET GOVERNANCE FORUM (IGF) IN RIYADH, said 40 NGOs and human rights organizations including Amnesty International in a joint statement published today.

One of the key themes of the annual forum on digital public policy, which is due to take place from 15 to 19 December 2024, is ADVANCING HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE DIGITAL AGE. THE ORGANIZATIONS HIGHLIGHTED THE HYPOCRISY IN SAUDI ARABIA PLAYING HOST TO THE EVENT WHILE CONTINUING TO LOCK UP, FORCIBLY DISAPPEAR AND INTIMIDATE PEOPLE INTO SILENCE.

“Saudi Arabia’s authorities have 100 days before the IGF begins to demonstrate that they will ease their draconian crackdown on freedom of expression, and to show that they will use this event as an opportunity to carry out genuine reforms rather than as part of an image washing campaign,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.

“In order to prove that their hosting of the conference about the Internet’s future is more than just a cynical PR exercise, the Saudi authorities must release all those arbitrarily detained solely for exercising their right to freedom of expression online before the IGF begins.”

THE DISSIDENT

Amnesty International is calling on the IGF organising committee to seek public assurances from the Saudi authorities that no one will be denied entry into the country to participate in the conference, that none of the IGF participants will face any harassment, including detention and surveillance, and that all participants will be able to speak freely.

In recent years AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL HAS DOCUMENTED HOW THE SAUDI AUTHORITIES HAVE WAGED A CHILLING CRACKDOWN AGAINST PEOPLE WHO DEMONSTRATE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST SIGN OF DISSENTING OR CRITICAL VIEWS ONLINE.

Among those who have been convicted for their online expression is Salma al-Shehab. She was arrested in January 2021 and, after a grossly unfair trial, sentenced in January 2023 to a shocking 27-year prison term followed by a 27-year travel ban on trumped up terrorism charges, simply because she tweeted in support of women’s rights.

In another deeply disturbing case, in January 2024, Saudi Arabia’s terrorism court sentenced Manahel al-Otaibi to 11 years in prison in connection

with social media posts promoting women’s rights and sharing images of herself online at a mall without wearing an abaya (a traditional loose-fitting long-sleeved robe). 

Those targeted also include Abdulrahman al-Sadhan, a Red Crescent worker, who in April 2020, after a grossly unfair trial, was sentenced to 20 years, to be followed by a 20-year travel ban, for his satirical tweets, and Mohammad bin Nasser al-Ghamdi, a retired schoolteacher, who was sentenced to death in July 2023 for criticizing authorities on X (formerly Twitter) and his online activity on YouTube.

ANTICHRIST – THE COMING WORLD LEADER

THE COMING BEAST FROM THE SEA

Rev 13:1-2 And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw A BEAST coming out of the sea. He had TEN HORNS AND SEVEN HEADS, WITH TEN CROWNS ON HIS HORNS, and on each head a blasphemous name. (2) THE BEAST I saw resembled a LEOPARD, but had feet like those of a BEAR and a mouth like that of a LION. The dragon gave THE BEAST his power and his throne and great authority.

There is one coming who will literally take this world by storm! And that’s not a good thing. Scripture knows him by several names. Probably the most famous is ‘the Antichrist’ though surprisingly this is used in 1st and 2nd John only and not in Revelation at all. In Revelation ‘the beast’ is used extensively with 37 mentions in 29 verses. A few other names and titles that he is known  by IS ‘THE MAN OF SIN’, ‘THE SON OF DESTRUCTION’, ‘THE LAWLESS ONE’, ‘THE LITTLE HORN’ AND ‘THE PRINCE THAT IS TO COME’. Now people love to speculate on who it is and this has gone on for centuries, going right back to the time of Nero in the 1st century. But it’s pretty clear right? It’s Bill Gates. No sorry, it’s Klaus Schwab. Actually, no, I meant to say it’s King Charles III. Ok, I’m being naughty. It’s not them… THE ANTICHRIST WILL ACTUALLY BE CHARISMATIC AND POPULAR! So let’s see what scripture says because unbiblical speculation isn’t helpful.

We see in this passage that THE DRAGON SATAN [Allah, Devil, Serpent, Prince of the Power of the Air],  standing on the shore of the sea. It is a day where the Restrainer, the Holy Spirit and His work through the Church, have been taken out of the way. Having been kicked out of heaven the enemy knows that his time is now short and is allowed to bring forth his ‘beast’.

‘The beast’ – You might ask ‘Why use imagery of a beast Where does that come form?’ The IMAGERY OF THE BEAST, ESPECIALLY LOOKING LIKE A LEOPARD, A BEAR AND A LION, IS STRAIGHT FROM THE BOOK OF DANIEL. KING NEBUCHADNEZZAR OF BABYLON HAD A DREAM ABOUT A GLORIOUS STATUE OF A MAN, SYMBOLIZING THE COMING KINGDOMS ON THIS EARTH, God gave His impression of those same kingdoms by picturing them as various vicious beasts. Thus, the one who is coming will combine aspects of these various previous ‘beastly’ kingdoms.

1. ‘OUT OF THE SEA’ – The sea in scripture, as seen in the book of Revelation, speaks of the Gentile nations. Rev 17:15 And he *said to me, “The waters which you saw… are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues.’ And as we shall see in the next study, this stands in contrast with the 2nd Beast that comes from the land.
2. ‘HE HAD TEN HORNS’ – Horns in scripture speak of strength and the 10 horns are a pointer to the kingdom of the last days coming out of the revived Roman Empire, from which the beast/Antichrist arises. This corresponds to the 10 toes of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and the 10 horns in Belshazzar’s dream in Dan 7:7,24. The ten horns are also interpreted for us later – Revelation 17:12-13 “THE TEN HORNS WHICH YOU SAW ARE TEN KINGS WHO HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED A KINGDOM, but they receive authority as kings with the beast for one hour. These have one purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast.” 

1. ‘Seven heads’ – This again is interpreted from us in Revelation 17. There we read Rev 17:9-11 where we see that THE SEVEN HEADS ARE BOTH SEVEN MOUNTAINS AND SEVEN KINGS (OR KINGDOMS).
2. ‘Each head had a blasphemous name’ – Each head is blasphemous, displaying gross disrespect for God, taking glory for itself and dwelling in pride. As we go on we’ll see that the coming Antichrist, as Satan’s man, will specifically speak out and blaspheme the God of heaven. He won’t be able to hide his hatred for God desiring all worship for himself.

1. ‘Resembled a leopard… a bear… a lion’ – We see that the coming beast will follow a line of the ‘beast’ empires (Greece, Medo-Persia & Babylon) and their leaders as seen in Daniel 7. They are placed in the reverse order to what we see in Daniel because John is now looking back in time instead of forwards as seen in the days of Daniel. 
2. ‘The dragon gave the beast his power’ – The coming Antichrist will be specifically empowered and even possessed by Satan Himself. It is Satanic power that will grant Antichrist the ability to accomplish incredible feats, goals and wonders (2 Thes 2:9-10).

THE BEAST – A KINGDOM OR A PERSON?

Before moving on, let me just say that commentators sometimes debate whether the ‘beast’ of Revelation speaks of a Kingdom or a person. I believe it speaks predominantly of a coming man2 but because God sees this coming beast as a continuation of the ‘beast’ kingdoms (as seen in Daniel 7) that have preceded him, He starts by showing how he is linked to them. As an illustration, think of it like this: I have a great little torch at home with a sliding lens. When retracted it gives a nice wide beam that is really useful for giving an extended field of vision. When extended forward, it gives a very narrow concentrated beam that is useful for seeing specific detail. Revelation 13 is like that. It starts with a wide beam showing the continuation of the ‘beast’ empires that have already existed with the one who is to come. And so IT SPEAKS OF THIS COMING BEAST WITH CHARACTERISTICS LIKE A LEOPARD, A BEAR AND A LION – ALL IMAGERY USED IN DANIEL OF THE PREVIOUS BEAST KINGDOMS OF GREECE, MEDO-PERSIA AND BABYLON RESPECTIVELY. But the light in Revelation 13 soon becomes very narrow and specific, focusing directly on the coming Antichrist. As we go on it will be very focused on the man himself. 

THE LAST DAYS… WELCOME TO OPEN SATAN WORSHIP

THE FALSE POPE, PROPHET OR PONTIFF CAUSES THE WORLD’S WORSHIP OF THE BEAST, ANTICHRIST OR MAHDI

Rev 13:3-4 One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was astonished and followed the beast. (4) Men worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?” 

There are some really interesting points that are made in these verses. We see first of all that the beast ‘seemed to have a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed.’ It is repeated in verses 12 & 14 where it is applied to an individual. And because this is repeated three times in this one chapter, we would do well to take notice of it. Verse 14 says:

Rev 13:14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life.

So here we see that THE BEASTS’ ‘FATAL WOUND’ COMES FROM A SWORD, AND YET HE COMES BACK TO LIFE! This mention of the sword reminds us of a passage in Zechariah about the coming Antichrist (called the ‘worthless shepherd’) which says: Zec 11:17 “Woe to the WORTHLESS SHEPHERD Who leaves the flock! A sword will be on his arm And on his right eye! His arm will be totally withered And his right eye will be blind.”

THE ANTICHRIST – A COPYCAT!

It should be noted that the word ‘Antichrist’ means both ‘against’ and ‘in place of’. That is, the coming Antichrist, while hating Christ, will usurp the place of Jesus and even try to mimic the real King in some ways. We see this with ‘the fatal wound’ that he received. The Greek word here translated ‘fatal’ is ‘thanatos’ which literally means death. THERE WILL BE SOME TYPE OF ‘DEATH AND RESURRECTION’ EVENT THAT WILL LEAVE THE WHOLE WORLD IN AWE AND MESMERIZED BY THE ANTICHRIST. Note that again – IT SAYS THE WHOLE WORLD WILL BE ASTONISHED AND FOLLOW THE BEAST AFTER THIS EVENT. THIS WILL BE SATAN’S DAY AND IF YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE EASILY SWAYED TODAY, WHAT IS COMING IS ON A WHOLE DIFFERENT LEVEL!

Notice also that it says that men will worship both the dragon and the beast. Remember again that the dragon is Satan. Men will worship Satan. Think about that! Everything will be twisted and turned upside down in the coming day. Satan will be revered and the God of heaven despised. Satan will be seen as the ‘good guy’ and Yahweh as the evil one. Woe to those that call evil good and good evil! And the coming day will not have atheists. There will be a choice that all have to make as to who they will worship – God or Satan? Antichrist or Jesus Christ? And scripture says that the vast majority will marvel at the Antichrist (beast) and say ‘who is like him? Who can make war with him?’ Unfortunately, we only have to look at history to see how easily the masses can be led astray!  

HITLER – SATAN’S DRY RUN

World War II has begun. That generation got to see an ‘antichrist’. Yet what is interesting is that this man Hitler was and is such a study in contrasts. As we explore his life there are so many pointers to the coming Antichrist it seems as if Satan was doing ‘a dry run’. On this I would recommend Erwin W. Lutzer’s book ‘Hitler’s Cross’: 

HIS RISE: Hitler’s rise was filled with remarkable achievements. So much so that most Christians in Germany saw him as an answer to prayer. Most Pastors willingly submitted and praised him. Winston Churchill observed him closely and in 1937 said his accomplishments in bringing Germany out of their great depression, were among the most amazing in the history of the world. One historian said that had he died before World War II he would have gone down in history as ‘Adolf the great, one of the outstanding figures in German history.’ 

HIS CONTROL: It is interesting that though apparently quite dull and unremarkable outside of politics, Hitler was a mesmerizing powerful public speaker who captured and held his listeners, and soon had millions of obedient subjects. First through awe, and then through fear, the nation was willing to do his bidding no matter what his demands. He was seen as the savior of Germany, a Messiah-like figure, given full powers as a complete dictator and seen as the one who would bring them into the golden age. Through the power of propaganda he was able, along with his Nazi party, to take over the media, education, the heath system and even the church.

HIS CHARACTER AND CONTRASTS: Hitler was a man of stark contrasts. HE WOULD GIVE SPEECHES ABOUT HIS DESIRE FOR PEACE, WHILE PRIVATELY PREPARING FOR WAR. HE COULD BE CHARMING ONE MOMENT AND MONSTROUSLY CRUEL THE NEXT. HE WOULD SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD MORALS WHILE PRIVATELY REVELING IN HIS ABILITY TO DECEIVE. DESPITE WHAT HE SAID OUTWARDLY, HE BELIEVED IN LIES, ESPECIALLY BIG ONES, SAYING ‘THE MAGNITUDE OF A LIE ALWAYS CONTAINS A CERTAIN FACTOR OF CREDIBILITY SINCE THE MASSES… MORE EASILY FALL VICTIM TO A BIG LIE THAN A SMALL ONE.’ He could quote Jesus, while openly seeking the extermination of the entire Jewish population. He would speak of being a Catholic while being heavily into the occult, banning prayer in schools and crushing the leadership of the church.

HITLER WAS SATAN’S DRY RUN FOR THE COMING ANTICHRIST AND A GREAT, ALTHOUGH TERRIBLE, PICTURE OF WHAT IS TO COME.

So look now at how this points to the coming Antichrist. THIS COMING BEAST THAT HE WILL BE AN INTELLECTUAL GENIUS, AN ORATORICAL GENIUS, A POLITICAL GENIUS, A MILITARY GENIUS, A COMMERCIAL GENIUS, A GOVERNMENTAL GENIUS AND A RELIGIOUS GENIUS. And when examining  scripture we see how this is all possible. Consider the following passage about him:

Dan 8:23-25 “…A king will arise, Insolent and skilled in intrigue. (24) “His power will be mighty, but not by his own power, And he will destroy to an extraordinary degree And prosper and perform his will; He will destroy mighty men and the holy people. (25) “And through his shrewdness He will cause deceit to succeed by his influence; And he will magnify himself in his heart, And he will destroy many while they are at ease. He will even oppose the Prince of princes, But he will be broken without human agency.

THIS PASSAGE ABOUT THE ANTICHRIST SAYS:

1. He will rise in leadership, yet be fierce, insolent and skilled in the dark arts
2. He will be mighty in power… yet not through his own power
3. He will prosper… while destroying to an extraordinary degree
4. He will succeed… through deceit and shrewdness
5. He will bring peace… and destroy many while they are at ease
6. He will magnify himself… while opposing even the Prince of princes
7. He will be finally broken… yet not through human hands

THE MAN WITH THE MOUTH

Rev 13:5-6 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months. (6) He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.

MBS (MAN-BY-SATAN) – THE GREAT SPEAKER, PRINCE OR BEAST PERFORMS WONDEROUSLY AND DECEIVINGLY. MOHAMMED BIN SALMAN.

Most times in scripture it speaks about this coming world leader, the Antichrist, it mentions his mouth. To say that he will be a man with the gift of the gab is to put it mildly. HIS SPEECH WILL BE INCREDIBLY PERSUASIVE AND POWERFUL. WE SAW THAT AS MENTIONED WITH HITLER.

The coming beast will be like that but on a whole different scale. He is Mr. Big Mouth. The prophet Daniel speaks about this often (Dan 7:8; Dan 7:11; Dan 7:20; Dan 7:25; Dan 11:36). But it isn’t just huge promises, big claims and proud words coming out of his mouth. It is also blasphemy.  He will despise God, hate Jesus, and loathe the believers that live in Heaven. All of them will be in the firing line of his taunts and abuse. For 3 1/2 years, during the second half of the tribulation period, he will defy God and curse all those associated with Him. He is the end times Goliath standing and defying the God of Israel and all His people. That will even include the raptured church who have overcome Satan and escaped his rule of tyranny for it says he will slander those who live in heaven. He will hate all that worship the true God, stating it openly, for he will desire all to worship himself. 

POWER OVER THE SAINTS

Rev 13:7-10 He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. (8) All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast–all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world. (9) He who has an ear, let him hear. (10) If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints.

The Bible says that he will be given power and authority. He is given power to make war against the saints. He is given authority to rule over every nation. So the obvious question is ‘by whom? On a human level he will be given authority by the 10 kings whom he will initially rule alongside with. On the spiritual level, this power and authority comes from Satan – the ruler of this world. Going further, ultimately God is the One that has allowed this – for a well defined and limited time frame. And note that he will have authority over all the peoples and nations. If anyone ever asks you where in the Bible it says that there will be a global government, this is one of those places. EVERY NATION ON EARTH WILL COME UNDER HIS CONTROL AND AUTHORITY. 

ALWAYS TAKE MATTERS TO GOD AND ASK FOR INSIGHT!

Rev 13:8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast–all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.

Thankfully, there will be some that see through the Antichrist and do not follow him. They are those that have been written in the Lamb’s book of life. They will not worship him. They will not comply. They are those that have eyes to see and ears to hear. They will see what the masses are seeing… and yet have the totally opposite response to those in the world. They will hear what others in the world hear… and yet think the opposite. This reminds us of the importance of hearing from God, knowing His voice, and understanding His word does it not? Believer, do not be surprised if you are different to those in the world. That is how it should be. You march to the beat and sound of a different drum. Always be listening for the voice of God. This is critical for this day as WE SEE THE MYSTERY OF LAWLESSNESS AT WORK AND WE SEE THE CHESS PIECES FALL INTO PLACE FOR THIS COMING WORLD LEADER. Praise God for His voice, His gift of discernment and the leading of His Holy Spirit. It is only He who keeps the believer from being deceived as well. But we are not passive in this. We should always ask God for revelation and wisdom to be able to discern correctly. As Rev 13:9 says:

Rev 13:9 He who has an ear, let him hear.

May we be those that can hear and then respond accordingly.

Rev 13:10 If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints.

This final verse reminds us that there is a plan and purpose in all things. Yes, in the coming day things will seem chaotic. Believers on this day will be imprisoned. Others will be killed. But God is still ruling and so he calls for patient endurance from the saints because of this fact. This applies to our lives right now as well obviously. PATIENT ENDURANCE AND FAITHFULNESS, EVEN WHEN THE WAY FORWARD SEEMS DARK AND UNCERTAIN, IS VERY IMPORTANT. Yet often we don’t have this within ourselves. Often we are not courageous and strong. If this is you, then take your concerns to the Great Shepherd once again. Acknowledge that you are nothing, but He is something! Really something! Admit your doubts and weaknesses and ask that He would be your strength, Thankfully, the patient endurance of the believer is obtainable because we are connected to the One who always endures and is faithful to us. 

CONCLUSION

WE’VE SEEN THAT HE WILL BE AN INTELLECTUAL, ORATORICAL, POLITICAL, MILITARY, COMMERCIAL AND RELIGIOUS GENIUS. WE SAW THAT THIS TITLE ‘ANTICHRIST’ MEANS BOTH ‘AGAINST’ AND ‘INSTEAD OF OR IN PLACE OF’ CHRIST. Thus there are both comparisons and contrasts with Jesus Christ. On the one hand he will come trying to mimic the Lord Jesus. On the other hand he will hate and despise the Lord and his life will be the greatest contrast with the true King

JESUS CHRIST – ANTICHRIST COMPARISONS

1. Christ was revealed only at God’s appointed time (Gal. 4:4). Such will also be the case with the Antichrist (2 Thess. 2:6).
2. Christ will make a covenant with Israel (Heb. 8:8); so also will the Antichrist (Dan. 9:27).
3. Christ will be the King of kings (Rev. 17:14); so also will the Antichrist be (Rev. 17:12, 13).
4. Christ wrought miracles (Acts 2:22). So also will the Antichrist, concerning whom it is written, “whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders” (2 Thess. 2:9).
5. Christ’s public ministry was limited to three years and a half; so also will the Antichrist’s final ministry be (Rev. 13:5).
6. Christ is shown to us riding a “white horse” (Rev. 19:11); so also is the Antichrist (Rev. 6:2).
7. Christ will return to the earth as Prince of Peace (Isa. 9:6, 7); so also will the Antichrist introduce an era of FALSE peace (Dan. 11:21, 1 Thess. 5:3)
8. Christ died and rose again; so also will the Antichrist (Rev. 13:3).
9. The followers of the Lamb will be sealed in their foreheads (Rev. 7:3; 14:1); so also will the followers of the Beast (Rev. 13:16, 17).
10. Christ will be the object of universal worship (Phil. 2:10); so also will the Antichrist (Rev. 13:4).

JESUS CHRIST – ANTICHRIST CONTRASTS

1. One is called the Christ (Matt. 16:16); the other THE ANTICHRIST (1 John 4:3).
2. One is called the Man of Sorrows (Isa. 53:3); the other THE MAN OF SIN (2 Thess. 2:3).
3. One is called the Son of God (John 1:34); the other the SON OF PERDITION (2 Thess. 2:3).
4. One is called the Seed of woman (Gen. 3:15); the other the SEED OF THE SERPENT (Gen. 3:15).
5. One is called the Lamb (Isa. 53:7); the other THE BEAST (Rev. 11:7).
6. One is called the Holy One (Mark 1:24); the other THE WICKED ONE (2 Thess. 2:8).
7. One is called the Truth (John 14:6); the other THE LIE (John 8:44).
8. One is called the Good Shepherd (John 10:11); the other is called the IDOL SHEPHERD (Zech. 11:17).
9. One has for the number of His name 888; the other has for THE NUMBER OF HIS NAME 666 (Rev 13:18) .
10. Christ came down from heaven (John 3:13); ANTICHRIST COMES UP OUT OF THE BOTTOMLESS PIT (Rev. 11:7).
11. Christ came in Another’s Name (John 5:43); ANTICHRIST WILL COME IN HIS OWN NAME (John 5:43).
12. Christ came to do the Father’s will (John 6:38); ANTICHRIST WILL DO HIS OWN WILL (Dan. 11:36).
13. Christ was energized by the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:14); ANTICHRIST WILL BE ENERGIZED BY SATAN (Rev. 13:4).
14. Christ submitted Himself to God (John 5:30); ANTICHRIST DEFIES GOD (2 Thess. 2:4).
15. Christ humbled Himself (Phil. 2:8); ANTICHRIST EXALTS HIMSELF (Dan. 11:37).
16. Christ cleansed the temple (John 2:14, 16); THE ANTICHRIST DEFILES THE TEMPLE (Matt. 24:15).
17. Christ was rejected of men (Isa. 53:7); ANTICHRIST WILL BE ACCEPTED BY MEN (Rev. 13:4).
18. Christ was slain for the people (John 11:51); ANTICHRIST SLAYS THE PEOPLE (Isa. 14:20).
19. Christ glorified God on earth (John 17:4), ANTICHRIST BLASPHEMES THE NAME OF GOD IN HEAVEN (Rev. 13:6).
20. Christ was received up into heaven (Luke 24:51); ANTICHRIST GOES DOWN INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE (Rev. 19:20).

The bottom line is that if you are a believer, thank God once again that you know Jesus Christ. Because the majority in this world already follow the spirit of antichrist and will follow the Antichrist when He comes. And if you are not a believer, realize that the One who was rejected by mankind when He came the first time, also died for mankind so that you could be saved and become the Sons and Daughters of the Living God. So love the truth and follow Christ least you be deceived and following a deceptive counterfeit. For THERE IS A WORLD LEADER COMING AND HE IS A COUNTERFEIT KING WHO WILL DESTROY GREATLY. But praise God that the true King of kings is coming as well and He will deal with this usurper king. May you follow the true King! 

Some of the specific names for the coming beast are:

1. ANTICHRIST: 1Jn 2:18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.
2. MAN OF LAWLESSNESS SON OF DESTRUCTION: 2Th 2:3 Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction,
3. THE LAWLESS ONE: 2Th 2:8 Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming;
4. THE BEAST: Rev 11:7 When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them and kill them.

IS THE BEAST AN EMPIRE OR MAN?

1. “The Beast is worshipped as a god; but people never worship an empire as such; neither do they make a succession of emperors into an object of religious devotion.  The paying of divine homage to kings has been a common thing in the world’s history, but it has always been rendered to individuals.”
2. An image is set up of the beast, and the whole world is commanded to worship it. How can one set up an image of an empire or a government? This hasn’t been done in the past, but men have often bowed down to an image of a political ruler.
3. “This Beast also has a proper name – a name expressive of a particular number, and that number ‘a number of a man;’ which cannot be conceived except on the idea of an individual person.”
4.  “This beast is finally damned. He goes to perdition, into the lake of fire, where he continues to exist and suffer, after passing from this earthly scene (Rev 17:11; 20:10), which cannot be true of systems of government.”
5. The antichrist is also called the son of perdition (2Th 2:3), as was Judas (Joh 17:12). Judas was a man, not a system or a government, so it follows that the antichrist will also be a man, not a system or a government.
6.  “We would therefore greatly err from the Scriptures, as well as from the unanimous conviction and teaching of the early Church, were we to fail to recognize this Beast as a real person, though one in whom the political power of the world is finally concentrated and represented.”

NOTE THAT EVERY TIME IT SPEAKS OF THE LENGTH OF THE ANTICHRIST’S RULE IT IS 3 1/2 YEARS (1260 DAYS, 42 MONTHS, TIMES, TIME AND HALF A TIME). BEFORE THE MIDPOINT HE IS VERY PROMINENT BUT IS IN JOINT LEADERSHIP ALONGSIDE THE 10 KINGS. AT THE MIDPOINT HE TAKES FULL CONTROL, DECLARES HIMSELF TO BE GOD AND REQUIRES ALL RULE AND WORSHIP OF HIMSELF AS GOD.

We have heard this phrase a lot earlier in Revelation chapters 2 and 3. There it was always ‘He who has an ear let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches’. But this time it is not to the church. The church is gone. So the message goes out to anyone in the world that has ears to hear, that they should listen and then act wisely!

SAUDI ARABIA 2023

The authorities targeted individuals for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression or association, and some were sentenced to lengthy prison terms or death following grossly unfair trials. Human rights defenders continued to be arbitrarily detained or subject to travel bans following their conditional release from prison. Courts handed down death sentences following grossly unfair trials, including in cases of individuals who were children at the time of their alleged crimes, and people were executed for a wide range of crimes. Migrants were subjected to serious human rights abuses, including killings at the border with Yemen and treatment that may amount to human trafficking for the purpose of labour exploitation. Thousands of people were involuntarily returned to their home country as part of a nationwide crackdown on undocumented migrants. Women continued to face discrimination in law and practice.

BACKGROUND

Saudi Arabia and the EU held their third human rights dialogue in Brussels, Belgium on 28 November. The EU raised concerns regarding Saudi Arabia’s continued application of the death penalty, including for drug-related offences and non-lethal crimes, as well as lengthy prison terms imposed for social media activity.

The Saudi Arabia-led coalition in the long-running armed conflict in Yemen continued to be implicated in war crimes and other serious violations of international law (see Yemen entry).

FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

The Specialized Criminal Court (SCC), established to try terrorism-related crimes, convicted and sentenced individuals to lengthy prison terms following grossly unfair trials solely for exercising their rights to freedom of association and expression, including online on X (formerly Twitter).

UNFAIR TRIALS

The authorities continued to arbitrarily detain individuals without giving them any opportunity to challenge the lawfulness of their detention, and in many cases sentenced them to lengthy prison terms or death on vague, “catch-all” charges that criminalize peaceful opposition as “terrorism” in violation of their fair trial rights.

In January, the SCC resentenced Salma al-Shehab, a PhD student at Leeds University in the UK and mother of two, to 27 years in prison followed by a 27-year travel ban after the Supreme Court in the capital, Riyadh, referred her 34-year prison term back to the SCC’s appeals chamber. The SCC upheld her convictions for terrorism-related offences, including “supporting those who seek to disrupt public order, destabiliz[ing] security and the stability of the state” and publishing tweets that “disturb public order, destabilize the security of society and the stability of the state.” The charges arose from posts she published on X in support of women’s rights.

In May, the Supreme Court upheld the 10-year prison sentence of Egyptian physician Sabry Shalaby. The SCC convicted him in August 2022 following a grossly unfair trial for supporting and joining the Muslim Brotherhood, which is classified as a terrorist organization in Saudi Arabia. He was held in solitary confinement for the first 10 months of his detention, which included three months in incommunicado detention. Throughout his detention, he repeatedly asked to see a neurologist about health complications arising from spinal cord surgery, but his requests were denied. In addition, he received inadequate care for asthma and cataracts arising from underlying health conditions.

The trial of religious cleric Salman Alodah continued before the SCC into its fifth year. He faced 37 charges, including affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood and others related to his calls for government reforms and “regime change” in the Arab region.

HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS

Human rights defenders continued to be arbitrarily detained, including following the expiry of their prison terms, and subjected to judicially imposed travel bans.

Mohammed al-Qahtani, founding member of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association, remained forcibly disappeared; his prison term expired in November 2022.

Prominent woman human rights defender Loujain al-Hathloul, who was released in February 2021 after serving two and a half years in prison, continued to be subjected to a travel ban.

DEATH PENALTY

Courts handed down and upheld death sentences imposed for a wide range of crimes, including in cases of individuals who were under the age of 18 at the time of the crime. The authorities carried out executions for a wide range of crimes throughout the year.

On 12 March, Hussein Abo al-Kheir, a Jordanian father of eight, was executed. He had been sentenced to death for drug smuggling following a grossly unfair trial. During his pretrial detention, he was held incommunicado, denied access to legal representation and tortured to make a “confession”. The authorities failed to return his body to his family following the execution.

In May, the Saudi Human Rights Commission confirmed in a letter to Amnesty International that: “the application of the death penalty on juveniles for ta’zir crimes has been completely abolished”. Ta’zir crimes are those for which the death penalty is not mandated under Islamic law. Contrary to such assurances, at least seven child offenders remained at imminent risk of execution, including Abdullah al-Derazi and Jalal Labbad. The Supreme Court upheld the death sentences against them in 2023 without informing their families or lawyers.

In July, the SCC sentenced to death 54-year-old retired teacher Mohammad bin Nasser al-Ghamdi solely for his peaceful online activity on Twitter (now known as X) and YouTube. He was convicted under articles 30, 34, 43 and 44 of Saudi Arabia’s counterterrorism law for offences that included: “renouncing allegiance to the guardians of the state”; “supporting a terrorist ideology and a terrorist entity [the Muslim Brotherhood]”; “using his accounts on Twitter and YouTube to follow and promote individuals who seek to destabilize public order”; and “sympathizing with individuals detained on terrorism-related charges.” Mohammad al-Ghamdi’s charge sheet cited several tweets that were used to convict him, including posts in which he criticized Saudi Arabia’s king and crown prince and its foreign policy, called for the release of detained religious clerics, and protested against increased prices. He was not accused of any violent crime.

MIGRANTS’ RIGHTS

The authorities continued their crackdown on individuals accused of violating residency, border and labour regulations, including through arbitrary arrests and deportations of foreign nationals solely due to their irregular immigration status.

According to the Ministry of Interior, between January and December, at least 468,000 foreign nationals were returned to their home country out of over 777,000 arrested for “violating labour, residency and border security” regulations. In the same period, over 40,000 foreign nationals, most of them Ethiopian and Yemeni nationals, were arrested for crossing the border irregularly from Yemen into Saudi Arabia.

Dozens of Nepali migrant workers contracted to work in Amazon warehouses were subjected to serious human rights abuses, including treatment that may amount to human trafficking for the purposes of labour exploitation. The workers were deceived by recruitment agencies in Saudi Arabia about the nature of their employer and the terms and conditions of their jobs before leaving their home country. Additionally, they had their wages withheld by third-party contractors and were housed in wholly inadequate accommodation. Some were verbally or physically abused or threatened with such abuse, particularly when they raised complaints about their living and working conditions. Once these workers were terminated from deployment with Amazon, third-party contractors often failed to find them alternative jobs and stopped paying them their contractual wage when they were rendered “jobless”. Contractors also provided these workers with limited or no support and failed to give them the required documents to allow them to change jobs or leave the country, thereby restricting their freedom of movement and job mobility.

During the year, Saudi border guards killed Ethiopian migrants and asylum seekers who tried to enter Saudi Arabia across the border with Yemen. Human Rights Watch documented how the guards used explosive weapons against the migrants and shot some at close range, including children, killing at least hundreds between March 2022 and June 2023.

1. WOMEN’S AND GIRLS’ RIGHTS

Women continued to face discrimination in law and practice, including in matters of marriage, divorce, child custody and inheritance. Under the country’s Personal Status Law, fathers are default guardians of their children. While the mother is automatically granted custody in the event of separation, the father is designated as the child’s legal guardian without due consideration of the best interests of the child.

In February, an appeals court overturned an earlier verdict that had granted US citizen Carly Morris custody of her daughter. The ruling was based on Article 128 of the Personal Status Law, which states that a custodian loses their custody if they move to reside in another place where the interests of the child is not taken into consideration. Carly Morris was not notified about the court sessions, which took place in her absence, and her former husband has since not allowed her communication with her daughter.

In May, Saudi fitness instructor Manahel al-Otaibi was charged with “defaming the kingdom at home and abroad, calling for rebellion against public order and society’s traditions and customs, and challenging the judiciary and its justice” for challenging the customs and traditions of Saudi Arabia on social media, including by advocating for liberal clothing for women, appearing in what the authorities said was indecent clothing on social media and calling for the abolition of male guardianship laws.

RIGHT TO A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT

Saudi Arabia, a major fossil fuel producer, also remained one of the world’s top 10 CO2 emitters per capita.

In July, the Financial Times newspaper reported that Saudi Arabia had blocked a G20 initiative to cut back on the use of fossil fuels.

In 2023, the state-owned Saudi Aramco produced on average more than 12 million barrels of oil a day. It aims to increase its output by about 1 million barrels per day by 2027 and increase its production of natural gas by 50% by 2030. The oil and gas produced by Aramco have been estimated to be responsible for more than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions since 1965 and, according to a study, accounted for about 4.8% of all global greenhouse gas emissions in 2018 – the largest of any oil and gas company.

Saudi Arabia has executed 199 people this year, the highest number of executions in a calendar year on record, according to Reprieve.

In July and August alone there were 80 executions. The previous highest figure was 196 in 2022 followed by 184 in 2019.

“The Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman is presiding over a death penalty crisis, which is intensifying as authorities apparently seek to clear out their overcrowded prison population,” the rights group said today. A 2023 report by Reprieve and ESOHR showed that since he came to power with his father King Salman in 2015, the annual rate of executions has doubled. In total at least 1,456 people have now been executed under the crown prince.

Reprieve highlighted that the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) is due to vote on 9 October on whether Saudi can join the body, adding that “during the last HRC election in October 2020, UN member states denied them a seat. Since then violations against child defendants, women’s rights defenders and social media influencers have got worse.”

Jeed Basyouni, who leads Reprieve’s work on the death penalty in the MENA region, said:

“We know that the Saudi authorities often increase the pace of executions when the world’s attention is elsewhere, and this appears to be happening now. With fresh horrors being reported every day in Gaza, the Middle East on the brink of a wider war, and the US presidential election transfixing global media, death row prisoners in Saudi Arabia are at higher risk than ever.”

Each morning, families wake up in fear of finding out their loved one has been killed, in an announcement on state media.

A family member of Youssef Al-Manasif, who faces execution for non-lethal offences including attending demonstrations when he was between 15 and 17 years old, said: “For the last seven years, since Youssef was taken from us and tortured, we have suffered, in constant fear that one day we will see a news announcement that he has been executed. It is not too late for the authorities to show mercy – and to honour the promise they made to the world that no child defendant would ever be executed in Saudi Arabia again. I ask them, please, send Youssef home to his family.”

A NEW IMPRESSIVE ANGEL

Rev 18:1 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.

There are two points in this verse which indicate that the fall of Babylon in chapter 18 is different from that described previously in chapter 17. 

‘After this I saw’ – this is a separate vision John had which he was given after the one in chapter 17

‘Another angel coming down’ – there is a different angel that comes down from heaven to give John revelation on this part of Babylon’s fall. 

There are other differences as well. While chapter 17 focused on a false religious system, chapter 18 focuses on the commercial aspect of Babylon. We saw in chapter 17 that the 10 kings who have power with the beast hated the woman and eventually destroyed her. Where as in chapter 18 the kings of the earth will weep and mourn over Babylon’s fall. Clearly, a different aspect of Babylon is being presented here.   

Now this new angel who comes is more than a little impressive. We should not underestimate these angels – especially those close to the presence of God! This angel illuminates the earth in his reflected glory from God. This will be one powerful angel. It reminds us of course of the glorious coming of the Lord Jesus. The prophet Ezekiel was given a vision of Christ’s coming and wrote ‘…and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters, and the land was radiant with his glory.’ (Eze 43:2). These are the days all believer’s look forward to. Until then, believers are stranded in Babylon, waiting for it’s demise!

FALLEN, FALLEN IS BABYLON THE GREAT

Rev 18:2 With a mighty voice he shouted: “Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! She has become a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit, a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird. (3) For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.”

We saw in the last chapter that BABYLON WAS BOTH A RELIGIOUS SYSTEM AND A CITY. WE WILL SEE IN THIS CHAPTER THAT IT IS ALSO PROMINENT AS A FINANCIAL / COMMERCIAL SYSTEM AND CAPITAL. THERE ARE MANY IDEAS ABOUT WHAT THIS ‘BABYLON’ IS AND WHERE IT WILL BE LOCATED. 

WHO IS BABYLON?

IN THE LAST DAYS THIS WILL BE CENTRALIZED TO A PARTICULAR CITY WHERE THE ANTICHRIST WILL RULE FROM.

SPIRITUAL AND MATERIAL SEDUCTION

Now if the religious Babylon of chapter 17 seduced the people with a form of spiritual drunkenness, THE COMMERCIAL BABYLON SEDUCES THEM WITH MATERIALISM AND FINANCIAL POWER AND PROSPERITY. As they say ‘money makes the world go round’. And for that matter, it also causes conflict. Most of the wars in our world are based around power and financial control. And you can imagine how this will only intensify once the CURRENT PLANS OF THE WORLD’S ELITE COME TO PASS WITH A GLOBAL CBDC (CENTRAL BANK DIGITAL CURRENCY) PLATFORM. THEY WILL THEN CONTROL THE BUYING AND SELLING OF EVERYONE IN THE WORLD. EVERYTHING WILL REVOLVE AROUND THEIR FINANCIAL SYSTEM OF CONTROL. But it will come to an end. Thank God! This FINANCIAL SYSTEM OF BABYLON WILL COME TO AN END. And so we hear the angel’s voice saying ‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! She has become a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit.’ 

COME OUT OF HER MY PEOPLE

Rev 18:4-6 Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; (5) for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes. (6) Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Mix her a double portion from her own cup.

Against the backdrop of this spiritual and material seduction, the command of God is clear – “Come out of her my people!” The Old Testament background to this is Isaiah’s and Jeremiah’s warning for their people to leave the literal Babylon (Isa 48:20, Jer 50:8, 51:6-9, 51:45) and so it is with her seduction today. God’s people in the last days are told to come out of her and not share in her sins. This obviously has an application for all ages including today.

APPLICATION: COME OUT OF HER

This has a direct application to those that are in a false church or religious system. We saw that BABYLON WAS PORTRAYED AS A HARLOT IN REVELATION 17 THAT SEDUCED THE WHOLE WORLD. The warning and plea of God is to come out and not be part of it. For those that find themselves in a work based religion like the Catholic church or the cults like Jehovah Witness or Mormonism or Islam, the command is to ‘come out – do not share in her sins.’ 

For those thinking of entering into a serious partnership or relationship with unbelievers, THE COMMAND OF GOD TO THE CHURCH IS “COME OUT FROM THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE,” SAYS THE LORD. “AND DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN; AND I WILL WELCOME YOU. (2CO 6:17) Simply put, we are to put the Lord first in the decisions and partnerships that we enter into.   

Now you will see that God has remembered Babylon’s sins. He has not forgotten them. Thankfully, for a believer, the promise of God in the New Covenant is “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” (Heb 10:17) For the believer, they are not only forgotten but are totally paid for by another. But not so Babylon and all who follow her. She will be paid back double for her sins. For those without salvation, God has a long memory. Back in the days of Genesis, the Lord said to Abraham that his descendants wouldn’t return to the Promised Land for 400 years because the sins of the Amorites had not yet reached its full measure (Gen 15:16 , Acts 7:6). That is a remarkable passage and gives great insight into God’s ways in terms of judgment. And yes, He plays the long game! So if God watched and waited 400 years for the sin of the Amorites to be at a level that required and justified judgment, imagine how long God was been watching and waiting for Babylon! Here, God’s memory goes all the way back to the PLAINS OF SHINAR AND THE TOWER OF BABEL OVER 4000 YEARS AGO. He has seen her sins, in their many forms, through the ages and is now ready to fully repay – in double measure! Verse 7 gives us another reason for this judgment.

SAUDI ARABIA’S FUTURISTIC CITY NEOM | “MYSTERY BABYLON” OF REVELATION 17-18. STEVE CIOCCOLANTI AND DISCOVER MINISTRIES

Rev 18:7-8 Give her as much torture and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. In her heart she boasts, ‘I sit as queen; I am not a widow, and I will never mourn.’ (8) Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her. (9) When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her.

This quote of ‘I sit as a queen… I will never mourn’ is straight from the book of Isaiah. I told you God has a good memory! Here it is:

Isa 47:5,7-11 Sit in silence, go into darkness, Daughter of the Babylonians; no more will you be called queen of kingdoms… You said, ‘I will continue forever– the eternal queen!’ But you did not consider these things or reflect on what might happen. (8) Now then, listen, you wanton creature, lounging in your security and saying to yourself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me. I will never be a widow or suffer the loss of children.’ (9) Both of these will overtake you in a moment, on a single day: loss of children and widowhood. They will come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many sorceries and all your potent spells. (10) You have trusted in your wickedness and have said, ‘No one sees me.’ Your wisdom and knowledge mislead you when you say to yourself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me.’ (11) Disaster will come upon you, and you will not know how to conjure it away. A calamity will fall upon you that you cannot ward off with a ransom; a catastrophe you cannot foresee will suddenly come upon you.

You will see, amongst other sins, that it speaks of self-security, suffer-free living, sorcery and spells. She is also said to be a ‘wanton creature. lounging in your security.’ 

APPLICATION: THE MESSAGE FOR THE SELF-SECURE

Think for a moment of the elite in this world that pull the strings on the world’s economy and policies. They have this same Babylonian attitude. They think that they are above disaster and can get away with whatever they like. They love this world and embody the spirit of Babylon. Yet disaster will come and no amount of money, wealth, influence, or sorcery will be able to change a single thing. 

This same attitude was exhibited by the king Belshazzar of Babylon in that famous scene in Daniel 5. Do you remember it? As he drank wine and partied, praising the gods of gold, silver and bronze (Dan 5:1-6) when suddenly a hand appeared and wrote on the wall. The message turned his face a deathly shade of grey and gave his knees the worst case of knocking this world has ever seen! THE HAND WROTE ON THE WALL ‘MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN’ MEANING ‘NUMBERED, NUMBERED, WEIGHTED, DIVIDED’. IN OTHER WORDS, DESPITE HIS SELF-SECURITY AND LUXURY LIVING, HE HAD BEEN WEIGHED AND FOUND WANTING! IT WAS NOW ALL OVER AND HIS KINGDOM WAS GONE. And so it was that very night! And that is how it will be for all that follow Babylon. It doesn’t have to be the kings and elite of this world. THOSE THAT PORTRAY THIS SAME SPIRIT, BEING PROUD AND SECURE IN THEMSELVES WITHOUT GOD, WILL FIND IN THEIR OWN TIME THAT THE WRITING ON THE WALL IS STILL GIVING THE SAME MESSAGE!  

THE REACTION OF THE WORLD

Rev 18:9-19 When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her. (10) Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry: ” ‘Woe! Woe, O great city, O Babylon, city of power! In one hour your doom has come!’ (11) The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no one buys their cargoes any more– (12) cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble; (13) cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and bodies and souls of men. (14) They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your riches and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ (15) The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn (16) and cry out: ” ‘Woe! Woe, O great city, dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls! (17) In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’ “Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off. (18) When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city?’ (19) They will throw dust on their heads, and with weeping and mourning cry out: ” ‘Woe! Woe, O great city, where all who had ships on the sea became rich through her wealth! In one hour she has been brought to ruin!

Now in this section there is a bit of repetition as three different sectors of society weep and mourn her loss. They are:

THE KINGS OF THE WORLD: Rev 18:9 When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her.

THE MERCHANTS OF THE EARTH: Rev 18:11 The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no one buys their cargoes any more

THE SEA CAPTAINS: Rev 18:17 Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off.

All three see their own wealth and livelihood suffering from the downfall of Babylon. And so we see all three here speak of the swiftness of her downfall using the same phrase ‘in one hour’. 

The kings of the world: Rev 18:10 NKJV  ‘Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For IN ONE HOUR your judgment has come.’

The merchants of the earth: Rev 18:17 NKJV For IN ONE HOUR such great riches came to nothing.

The sea captains: Rev_18:19 NKJV ‘Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! For IN ONE HOUR she is made desolate.’

APPLICATION: IN ONE HOUR

Look at these three phrases. In one hour… ‘your judgment has come’, ‘such great riches came to nothing’, ‘she is made desolate’. At 6 o’clock it is business as normal. By 7 o’clock she has been destroyed and the whole political and commercial system of the Antichrist lies in ruin. God is incredibly patient but when God judges, He judges swiftly. There is a key point that we should take from this for our lives today. It should remind us of a parable Jesus taught about greed and the swiftness of judgment:

Luk 12:15-21 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” (16) And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. (17) He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ (18) Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. (19) And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” ‘ (20) But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ (21) This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.

Like Babylon, in one hour this man’s judgement came. He was made desolate and his riches came to nothing. None of us know when we will enter eternity and if you think about it, most people in this world try to live like this man. They try to accumulate as much wealth as possible so that life will be easy. Even within the church wealth can be a mistaken focus as seen in the letter to Laodicea. So the man in this parable thought he had reached that perfect place where he could now take life easy with many good things laid up for many years. He was pleased with himself and the others around him patted him on the back saying ‘well done, you are so successful! God however wasn’t saying that. God thought he was a fool! You see, this man had planned and thought of everything… except the most important thing of all – being rich towards God! May we not be foolish but wise. May we use our time, gifts and resources wisely for the Lord. And this is where wisdom comes from:

Pro 9:10 AMP The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning (the chief and choice part) of Wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight and understanding.

The reality is that for all those living on this planet, life is fragile and short. We do not know if we have tomorrow. Last weekend I got a call to say that a friend who I went to Bible College with had died from a heart attack while sitting on his couch at home. Just unbelievable. Not yet 50 years old. He was on life support but didn’t make it to the next day. Incredibly sad and sobering. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow so all I can say is be rich towards God and live with eternity in mind.

SO WE SEE THAT THE KINGS OF THE WORLD, THE MERCHANTS of the earth and the captains of the sea will all weep and mourn at Babylon’s fall. You have probably all seen or heard of people throwing themselves out of buildings at the time of a bad stock market or banking collapse. With a large financial collapse comes the loss of all hope for those that rely solely on this world. For the man who only has what this world has to offer, the fall of this world will be a burden to great to bear. But for the believer, none of this comes as any surprise. We realize that ‘the world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.’ (1Jn 2:17). And so a different reaction is now seen in heaven to Babylon’s fall. There are no tears in heaven over Babylon’s fall. Well, if there are, they will actually be tears of joy!

THE REACTION OF THE HEAVEN

Rev 18:20-24 Rejoice over her, O heaven! Rejoice, saints and apostles and prophets! God has judged her for the way she treated you.’ ” (21) Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea, and said: “With such violence the great city of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be found again. (22) The music of harpists and musicians, flute players and trumpeters, will never be heard in you again. No workman of any trade will ever be found in you again. The sound of a millstone will never be heard in you again. (23) The light of a lamp will never shine in you again. The voice of bridegroom and bride will never be heard in you again. Your merchants were the world’s great men. By your magic spell all the nations were led astray. (24) In her was found the blood of prophets and of the saints, and of all who have been killed on the earth.”

The contrast in how heaven and earth see Babylon could not be greater. There is no funeral or dirge songs being sung over Babylon up there!

MAN’S VIEW OF BABYLON WAS OF WEALTH AND SENSUALITY, LUXURIOUS AND SPLENDID, POWERFUL AND PLEASURABLE, GLORIOUSLY ADORNED WITH GOLD AND PRECIOUS STONES AND PEARLS.

HEAVEN’S VIEW OF BABYLON WAS OF A DWELLING PLACE OF DEMONS, A SPREADER OF IMMORALITY, A PLACE WHERE SINS HAVE PILED UP AS HIGH AS HEAVEN, A DECEIVER OF THE NATIONS THROUGH SORCERY, AND THE BLOOD OF PROPHETS AND OF SAINTS.

When you look at this world’s system, which do you see? Do you see it through the eyes of heaven or earth? There is no doubting that we live in a corrupted world system. According to Oxfam, since 2020 the richest 1 percent grabbed nearly two-thirds of all new wealth worth. That is twice as much money as the bottom 99 percent of the world’s population. It seems Covid19 was very good for business for the world’s elite with a huge transfer of wealth from the middle class to the super rich!

But their day will come and so it is no wonder heaven is told to rejoice. And along with her, all the saints, apostles and prophets whether on heaven or earth, will rejoice. All the oppression and corruption, in all the forms that it takes, will finally come to an end. And so we see that all the normal things that occurred in this city will cease. NO MORE MUSIC, WORKMEN, LIGHTS OR WEDDINGS WILL BE SEEN IN BABYLON AGAIN. IN FACT THE IMAGERY GIVEN IN BABYLON’S FALL IS OF A GREAT STONE BEING HURLED INTO THE SEA, WHERE IT PLUMMETS TO THE DEPTHS OF THE OCEAN, NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN. THIS DESCRIBES THE SUDDENNESS AND PERMEANCE OF BABYLON’S FALL. It also reminds us of an Old Testament prophecy that spoke of Babylon’s fall being like ‘Sodom and Gomorrah’:

Isa 13:19-20 And Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans’ pride, Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. (20) It will never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation…

THIS SUDDEN AND COMPLETE DESTRUCTION, WHERE BABYLON IS NO LONGER INHABITED, WAS NOT BEEN FULFILLED IN HISTORY BUT WILL BE AT THE END OF THE TRIBULATION.  

Conclusion 

So… don’t get too wrapped up in this world. Babylon will fall. Isaiah spoke about it, Jeremiah spoke about, John spoke about it. Both the spiritual and financial seduction of this world will fall and come to and end bringing great rejoicing to heaven and to the saints of God. And what a glimpse we have of that which shall replace it. We read of the life to come on this planet in His everlasting Kingdom, where the prophet Isaiah spoke of the corruption-free conditions stating:

Isa 65:21-25 They will build houses and dwell in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit. (22) No longer will they build houses and others live in them, or plant and others eat. For as the days of a tree, so will be the days of my people; my chosen ones will long enjoy the works of their hands. (23) They will not toil in vain or bear children doomed to misfortune; for they will be a people blessed by the LORD, they and their descendants with them. (24) Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear. (25) The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but dust will be the serpent’s food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,” says the LORD.

Commentary: Descriptive references (not name or title conventions). Four of the evil references are related to a female (queen, no widow, woman, whore). The remaining references are to an evil city. We know these references are evil because there are six (6) of them and they describe the evil, physical city of Babylon City and those who dwell within it.

2. Jabal Al-Lawz, is the central-most point (and highest mountain) in NEOM and of the Midian Mountains.
3. Jabal Al-Lawz, the highest mountain sits at apx. 2,500 meters.

Commentary: (Rev. 6:15-17) . . . “And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, HID THEMSELVES IN THE DENS AND IN THE ROCKS OF MOUNTAINS; AND SAID TO THE MOUNTAINS AND ROCKS, FALL ON US, AND HIDE US FROM THE FACE OF HIM THAT SITTETH ON THE THRONE, AND FROM THE WRATH OF THE LAMB: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” Like scared mice, MEN HIDE UNDER AND BEHIND ROCKS BECAUSE OF THE GLORY AND WRATH OF JESUS CHRIST ON THE DAY OF HIS RETURN OR SECOND COMING. Today, millionaires and billionaires (and political elite) are building bunkers and enclaves in mountains and islands, with the thought they will be able to withstand a nuclear holocaust. It is the wrong solution to the wrong problem. They won’t be able to hide themselves when Jesus returns.

Notice the sequence (or ranking of men). It is from greatest to least, wealthiest to poorest, the political elite to those who have no power. THESE MEN QUICKLY REALIZE THEY ARE IN TROUBLE AND HAVE LITERALLY NO PLACE TO RUN OR TO HIDE. THEY ARE SO TERRIFIED, THAT THEY WOULD RATHER DIE THAN FACE THE JUDGEMENT AND WRATH OF THE LAMB. This is in light of the fact that they all had earlier opportunities, throughout their life, to accept the forgiveness of their sins, through the Lamb, but chose not to do so. Now, it is too late, and wrath has come. Thus, they are reaping the consequence of their decision(s). Their $17.5 million, steel reinforced, triple-concreted walls, and luxury stocked food pantries in bunkers, will fold and crush like an empty aluminum soda can. IRONICALLY, MEN WANT ROCKS TO FALL ON THEM TO HIDE THEM (OR SAVE THEM) FROM THE WRATH OF THE LAMB. MEN ARE SO DECEIVED AND WEAK-MINDED THAT THEY NOW THINK THAT ROCKS CAN SAVE THEM, INSTEAD OF THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB. WHEN A PERSON IS THOROUGHLY AND COMPLETELY ASHAMED OR EMBARRASSED OVER SOMETHING INCREDIBLY WRONG THAT THEY DID, MOST PEOPLE WITH A CONSCIENCE WISH THAT THEY ‘COULD JUST CRAWL UNDER A ROCK AND DIE’ INSTEAD OF FACING PUBLIC SCRUTINY OR RIDICULE. THIS WON’T BE TOO FAR FROM THE TRUTH AT THE END THE TRIBULATION.

SEVEN-FOLD DOOMS ON BABYLON CITY:

1. All plagues come in one day, one hour, death, mourning, famine, burning with fire. (Rev. 18:8, 10)
2. The great city is divided into three parts by the great earthquake on the Day of the Lord. (Rev. 16:19)
3. No music will be heard. (Rev. 18:22)
4. No craftsman (industry) will be found. (Rev. 18:22)
5. No millstone (delicious dining, restaurants) will be found. (Rev. 18:22)
6. No light (artificial or natural) will shine. (Rev. 18:23)
7. Voice of the bridegroom and bride (marriages) will not be heard. (Rev. 18:23)

Commentary: These verses describe what happens to the capital city of an evil empire, when God brings his ‘celestial hammer of wrath’. The city gets hammered and pounded into oblivion. (Rev. 18:21) . . . “And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.” The basic things of city living disappear within an hour. AN EARTHQUAKE SPLITS THE CITY INTO THREE PARTS. THE BURNING AND SMOKE FROM THE CITY CAN BE SEEN FOR MANY MILES OFFSHORE BY SAILORS, AND CAPTAINS OF VESSELS WHO TRANSPORTED WEALTH TO BABYLON’S DOCKS. (REV. 17:17). ALSO, KINGS OF THE WORLD AND MERCHANTS PLYING THEIR MERCHANDISE WITH BABYLON CAN SEE THE SMOKE FROM HER DESTRUCTION AND ARE SEVERELY PAINED BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEIR BEST CUSTOMER HAS BEEN DESTROYED ALONG WITH THEIR LIVELIHOOD. THEY ARE ALSO AFRAID FOR THEMSELVES AND KEEP THEIR DISTANCE, IN CASE THEY MIGHT RECEIVE THE SAME WRATH AS BABYLON. (REV. 17:11, 17:15, 17-19).

THREE-FOLD REFERENCE TO THE WORLD’S GREATEST EVER EARTHQUAKE DESTROYING NEOM BABYLON:

. . . “And every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of mountains; and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb (Rev. 6:14-16).

. . . “And there were voices and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of wine of the fierceness of his wrath.” (Rev. 16:18-19).

. . . “And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.” (Rev. 16:20).

Commentary: Even before the week of Jacob’s trouble or the Tribulation period, Christ warned mankind that the nearness of his return would be accompanied by the increasing frequency, intensity, scope and destruction of earthquakes. The references to earthquakes during the Tribulation take the destruction experienced from pre-tribulation earthquakes to a whole new, global level. Large portions of cities, and entire cities are quickly destroyed around the world. Babylon, capital of the evil empire and home to the mystery religion, is split into three parts and destroyed within one hour. Imagine New York City, San Francisco, London, Paris, Tokyo, Rome, Hongkong or Moscow suddenly being split into three sections and totally destroyed within one hour.

Yes, within one hour! The cataclysmic effect of the ‘great, such-as-was-not-since-men-were-upon-the-earth-earthquake’ is to literally level mountains, destroy/submerge islands and level entire cities. I am not physical (geological) scientist, but this almost appears to represent an entire global, axis shift and/or shifting of continents. The shifting of the earth on its axis or of its continental shelves, would cause tremendous inter-continental stress on the earth’s crust. Rev.16:18-19 clearly indicates that cities in nations, around the world, fall due to this global, cataclysmic earthquake.

There is no hiding in hills, bunkers, mountains, remote islands, high rises or any other natural or manmade shelter. Everything is flattened. Around the world. The intensity of this earthquake will most likely be off the Richter Scale (a numerical scale for expressing the magnitude of an earthquake on the basis of seismograph oscillations). The more destructive earthquakes typically have magnitudes between about 5.5 and 8.9; the scale is logarithmic and a difference of one represents an approximate thirtyfold difference in magnitude.

My hypothesis, in keeping with biblical, mathematical accuracy and truth, is that the ‘great earthquake’ that man has never, nor will ever again experience, will probably be at the level of 10.0 (which is off of the Richter Scale shown). Why do I say 10.0? Ten (10) Biblically denotes allness or completeness in a physical way, as to things on earth. Going from 7.0 to 8.0 is a thirty-fold increase in magnitude or strength, going from 8.0 to 9.0 is another increase in magnitude or strength of thirtyfold, lastly, going from 9.0 to 10.0 is yet another thirtyfold increase in magnitude or strength. Therefore, going from 7.0 to 10.0 on the scale is logarithmically a 30 x 30 x 30 (27,000%) increase in magnitude or strength.

This is unimaginable, unless you think of it mathematically, biblically. Keep in mind, Seismologists (scientists who study earthquakes and what causes them) consider an earthquake between 7.0 and 8.0 to be major or severe, and capable of causing great devastation and fatalities. Someone who is an expert in the geological sciences could probably calculate what magnitude of earthquake would be required to occur to cause such cataclysmic destruction as described from the greatest earthquake in mankind’s history.

If you continue to extrapolate the logarithmic slope line from 8.9 to a hypothetical 10.0 on the scale, the slope line would be almost completely vertical as you near 10.0 (off the charts). An earthquake with a magnitude of destruction of 10.0 would indeed affect the whole world, not just one city on one continent. Note, Seismologists rate an earthquake just below 9.0 as GREAT, what would an earthquake of 10.0 be? Cataclysmic? Scary. I am probably not using the right or appropriate term to describe the devastating effects of a 10.0 earthquake. This is a hypothesis based on mathematics, Richter scale benchmarks and Biblical truth in the representation of numbers.

 I am not a Geologist or Seismologist, nor do I have any scientific training in this area. I challenge someone more skilled than myself in this discipline, to calculate the destructive power of a 10.0 earthquake (or greater, if possible). I apologize in advance if my calculation or hypothesis is wrong. My attempt is an honest attempt at trying to understand and explain something that has only been described biblically, in a general way.

Mankind did not have a Richter scale, or scientific benchmark system to measure earthquakes, back in the days of John the Apostle. They only knew how bad an earthquake was by the amount of devastation it caused, and how much money they would have to beg from Rome in order to rebuild.

Rev. 18-19 indicates “; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.” There are three more hints or indications that the earthquake that hits Babylon happens very fast; Verses: 18:10, 18:17 and 18:19 all indicate that Babylon is completely destroyed and annihilated by this great earthquake within just ‘one hour’! There is a double of a double

(2+2=4) in the three verses. Islands were moved out of their places / fled away, Mountains were moved out of their places / were not found. Foursquareness (4) represents an added measure of equal weight or importance. Men think that mountains can protect them from the wrath of the Lamb, but that is not the case.

They are so absolutely terrified by the wrath of Jesus Christ, that they would rather die, on the spot, by an avalanche that have to face the Lamb, Jesus Christ. At the sight of Christ, they immediately knew, or are convicted, of their life of sin and that it will come with a judgement. They would rather die now from rocks, and be hidden and covered up, hoping to escape the punishment that Christ brings on The Day of the Lord, than have to face him at judgement. In their twisted fear and self-condemnation, they feel that being confronted by Christ directly, is worse than death itself.

These poor men are truly deceived, they ignored the messages of salvation, grace and the forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ. They had a chance to be saved earlier, and either ignored the message, didn’t believe it was true, forgot about it or didn’t think it applied to them, or procrastinated in thinking about it. In any case, it is now too late and they are absolutely terrified of the wrath that Jesus Christ brings. Pity, they now think their only escape is a pile of rocks. They literally feel like they want to ‘just crawl under a rock and die,’ due to their shame and embarrassment at having rejected Jesus Christ. Painful, very painful. An understatement.

SEVEN-FOLD LUXURIES OF BABYLON CITY:

1. Luxury metals and stones (fine gold, silver, precious stones, pearls). (Rev. 18:12)

3. Luxury building materials (precious woods, ivory, brass, iron, marble). (Rev. 18:12)

Commentary: This looks like today’s shopping list of the rich and famous, and of the political and financial elite of the world. I believe this covers everything materialistic that is generally valued around the world today (and in the future). There is nothing mundane, routine or common among these delicacies. Babylon is built on luxurious living and is the center of worldwide trade of these items and merchandise. These things are literally brought into Babylon by the ship loads (Rev. 18:17-19), “For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off.”

These items are considered luxurious because they are extremely expensive! (Rev. 18:19, “the great city was made rich by all the ships of the sea by reason of her costliness.”) The people in Babylon are extremely materialistic and glorify themselves through their wealth, but are spiritually evil and bankrupt. Demand for luxury items is so great that merchants of the earth have become wealthy themselves by providing these luxuries (Rev. 18:3, “and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.”)

 Both supply (merchants) and demand (people in Babylon) worship the created things and not God, the Creator. The worship of and reliance on luxury items plays right into the hands of the Mystery Religion of Babylon. Keep in mind that all these players (merchants and Babylon citizens), all have the mark of the beast and his system. They are allowed to sell and buy through the complicity and authority of the antichrist’s economic machinations via having the mark. Hypothetically speaking, I wouldn’t be surprised if the wealthy in Babylon view the antichrist’s ‘mark’ as a luxury brand symbol or something equivalent. Sad, very sad (understatement).

Interestingly, there is a parallel condemnation of wealth and materialism regarding the church of Laodicea (Rev. 3:14-22). During the time when John received the Revelation of Jesus Christ, Laodicea was a leading banking center, and known for manufacturing garments made from a soft, black wool. Additionally, Laodicea was also home to a famous medical school that specialized in the treatment of eye diseases. The city had a lot going for it economically. The Laodicea church also benefited financially from the surrounding strong economy.

The city was so strong financially, that in AD 60 when it was destroyed by an earthquake, Laodicea paid for its own reconstruction instead of asking Rome for rebuilding funds. As a result of the Laodicean church’s self-sufficiency and affluence, they received a strong rebuke from Jesus. The church considered itself wealthy and self-sufficient, instead, Jesus viewed this church very differently. He saw this church as “wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked”, using metaphors from the local economy that surrounded the church. “Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing: and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.” (Rev. 3:17) (Emphasis added). While the church thought it had everything, it had nothing. They confused material prosperity and comfort with spiritual health and security.

The Bible teaches that the rich (and very rich, by today’s standards) are often tempted to rely upon themselves, while the poor often turn to the Lord for help. Jesus challenges his people to trust in him rather than in material possessions, and to use things to meet the needs of others (Deut. 8:10-14; Prov. 30:8-9; Matt. 6:19-24; Luke 12:13-21; 1 Tim. 6:6-10, 17-19). Physical wealth and comfort can foster spiritual complacency and self-reliance. Affluence tempts us to forget God. The message to the church of Laodicea illustrates the power of forgetting God, due to materialistic affluence.

From an economic point of view, the parallel between Babylon and Laodicea is staggering. The rebuke that Jesus gave the church of Laodicea is generally considered to be one of the stronger (est) rebukes given to the five churches who were in need of correction. Keep in mind that Jesus’ rebuke was to those members in his own house (church). Babylon has the same evil symptoms, but on steroids! Citizens of Babylon and worshippers of Mystery Religion Babylon are swimming in luxury, wealth, materialism and self-sufficiency. Greed is rampant. They are not members of Jesus’ church and they do not acknowledge or worship the Creator who made the material wealth they worship and enjoy. Revelation 18:7 indicates, “How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously.” God is not remotely on their spending or spiritual radar.

 They are utterly deceived by their materialism and love of luxury and ‘delicious living’. Since Jesus strongly rebuked the Laodicean church members, how much more so will God pour out His wrath on Babylon, who openly rejects him for the love of wealth? The Laodicean church received rebuke from Jesus, Babylon will receive total destruction by God. This should be a message to today’s churches who preach the prosperity gospel. God is not against a person being prosperous, however, he is against the amount of prosperity that fosters complacency and self-sufficiency. He is also against the level of wealth that fosters wealth worship (greed) at the expense of forgetting one’s relationship with God and Jesus Christ.

In an interview with Al Arabiya English, Maya Senussi, and Akanksha Samdani, economists at Oxford Economics, said: “Saudi Arabia’s economic transformation, driven by Vision 2030, is progressing steadily. Recent GDP figures indicate that non-oil activities now constitute half of the economy. The non-oil segment is expected to continue its expansion, with activities projected to grow by nearly percent annually, surpassing pre-COVID-19 trends.”

INVESTMENT PLAYS A CRUCIAL ROLE

Investment is playing a central role in Saudi Arabia’s economic shift. While investment is forecasted to rise to 28 percent of GDP by 2030, up from 25 percent in 2016, economists say stronger foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows are expected.

Senussi and Samdani elaborated: “Investment plays a central role in this economic shift, although reaching the 2030 targets will depend on a significant increase in FDI. The biggest beneficiary sectors of higher investment include construction, manufacturing, and transportation, and new sectors such as entertainment, tourism, technology, and green energy.”

TOURISM THE KEY GROWTH DRIVER

The tourism sector has emerged as a critical contributor to growth and diversification, supported by a planned $800 billion investment over the next decade. Last year Saudi Arabia welcomed 27 million international visitors, who spent more than $37 billion in the Kingdom, according to a recently-released report by the Kingdom’s Ministry of Tourism, which revealed that the combined number of domestic and international tourists surpassed 109 million.

The National Tourism Strategy and a robust pipeline of major events, including the Asian Cup 2027, Asian Winter Games 2029, Expo 2030, and FIFA World Cup 2034, are expected to boost this sector further, say Senussi and Samdani.

They said labor market localization efforts have shown significant success, with nearly half of the Saudi workforce now employed in the private sector. The Saudi unemployment rate is approaching the seven percent goal, and female participation in the workforce has exceeded the Vision 2030 target of 30 percent.

Public finances are gradually diversifying away from oil dependency. Senussi and Samdani noted: “Public finances are gradually diversifying away from oil dependency, with non-oil fiscal revenues nearly tripling to $122 billion (SAR458 billion) in 2023, halfway to the Vision 2030 target of ($27 billion) SAR1 trillion. However, commodity exports still account for more than 60 percent of budget revenue, and modest fiscal deficits are expected throughout the decade.”

They added: “With public debt low at 26.2 percent of GDP, sovereign bond sales are likely to continue as a funding tool, and the Public Investment Fund’s domestic investments may be partially financed through external borrowing.”

GLOBAL ECONOMIC STANDING

Speaking to Al Arabiya English, James Swallow, Commercial Director at Sovereign PPG, highlighted the significance of Saudi Arabia’s economic trajectory.

“THROUGH ACHIEVING TRILLION-DOLLAR ECONOMIC STANDING, SAUDI ARABIA JOINS A SHORT-LIST OF OTHER COUNTRIES WHO HAVE DONE SO. IN REACHING THIS ELEVATED ECONOMIC STATUS, THE KINGDOM NOW FINDS ITSELF FEATURED AMONG PLACES SUCH AS THE UK, USA, FRANCE, GERMANY, INDIA, AND CHINA.”

Swallow added: “WITH THEIR NAME ON THIS PRESTIGIOUS LIST, SAUDI ARABIA WILL UNDOUBTEDLY GARNER SUBSTANTIAL INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR ITS ECONOMIC POTENTIAL AND CAPABILITIES ON A GLOBAL SCALE.”

Addressing the factors driving this growth, Swallow further explained: “THE RAPID GROWTH THAT SAUDI ARABIA’S ECONOMY HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING IN RECENT YEARS, IS LARGELY DRIVEN BY THE INITIATIVES TO ACHIEVE ITS VISION 2030 GOALS. AMONG THE KEY INITIATIVES, THE DIVERSIFICATION OF THE KINGDOM’S ECONOMIC PORTFOLIO AND THE MOVE AWAY FROM OIL DEPENDENCY HAVE INSTRUMENTAL IN INFLUENCING ITS ECONOMIC TRAJECTORY.”

FUTURE OUTLOOK

Swallow said maintaining this level of economic growth “may be challenging, considering how significant the growth has been in recent years and months,” but with increased international recognition and interest, growth remains the likely trajectory for its economy.

Senussi and Samdani believe, overall, Saudi Arabia is on track to meet many Vision 2030 targets, though some diversification goals are proving more challenging. Growth in the non-oil sector remains a key success, driven by higher domestic investment and enhanced competitiveness, with an expected 4.8 percent annual growth rate through 2030.

Despite challenges in FDI and non-oil exports, the Kingdom’s positive growth outlook, abundant projects, and regulatory improvements position it well for continued economic transformation, they observed.

As Saudi Arabia continues to build on its economic success, Swallow believes this will be utilized to further accelerate Vision 2030 initiatives and fund ongoing megaprojects, including the Kingdom’s $500 billion mega project, NEOM, which, once completed, will feature the world’s first floating marina, a mountain ski resort and a vast vertical city.

“It can be expected that the government will seek to reinvest this economic strength into new and existing projects, to expedite progression, attract additional foreign investment, and fund ongoing and future developments.”

Swallow also highlighted the sectors that are expected to play a significant role in sustaining Saudi Arabia’s economic growth beyond oil and gas. These include tourism, entertainment, hospitality, logistics, energy, real estate, and technological industry. Each of these sectors look to play a significant role in the sustainability of the Saudi Arabian economy, he said.

Job creation

The achievement of trillion-dollar economic status – first notched up in September 2023 – is expected to have a positive impact on Saudi Arabia’s ability to attract foreign investment.

Regarding job creation and unemployment rates, particularly for young Saudis, Swallow believes the Kingdom has carefully implemented its Saudization programme. Similar to regional practices, this initiative ensures that the Kingdom can utilize the young, educated demography to maintain economic stability and build a middle-class domestic consumer base to further economic growth.

In 2023, Al Arabiya English had reported how Saudi Arabia’s gross domestic product (GDP) exceeded the ceiling of $1 trillion (SAR 4.155 trillion) for the first time, with the Kingdom joining the trillion-dollar club and achieving the national goal well ahead of the target date of 2025.

A report from the Saudi Chambers at the time detailed that the Kingdom had achieved a growth rate of 8.7 percent – the highest among the G20 member-states – spurred mainly by its production capabilities, which is reflected in the increase in self-sufficiency rate of the Saudi economy to 81.2 percent, and the increase in the country’s investment rate (the invested percentage of output) to 27.3 percent.

Private sector has played a crucial role in this economic transformation. The report indicated that the Saudi private sector will continue its strong role and performance – thanks to its status as an effective partner in the comprehensive development process and in achieving the goals of Vision 2030. The private sector’s contributions to GDP increased to $440 billion (SAR 1.634 trillion), or 41 percent of its GDP, with a 5.3 percent growth rate.

Labor market improvements in the private sector have been significant, with the number of workers in the sector increasing from 8.08 million in 2021 to 9.42 million in 2022, representing a growth rate of approximately 16.6 percent.

Under the localization endeavor of the labor force, the number of Saudis working in the private sector increased from 1.91 million in 2021 to 2.19 million in 2022, with a growth rate of roughly 14.9 percent, reflected in an increase in the percentage of Saudi workers in the private sector to 58.2 percent.

Export growth has also been impressive, with the report highlighting the success of the Kingdom’s policies regarding diversification of the economic base and support for Saudi exports to global markets. The value of non-oil exports reached $84 billion, with a growth rate of 13.7 percent, accounting for 20.5 percent of commodity exports and reaching 178 countries around the world.

Commentary: “great city” is a descriptive reference for the physical city of Babylon. This is not a descriptive reference to Mystery Religion Babylon. Babylon City is described as “great” (not in a positive sense, but in a negative sense) because of what the city does throughout the earth during the Tribulation. It serves as a home-base for the Mystery Religion of Babylon. It possibly serves as the capital for the Babylon kingdom. The throne (or one of the thrones) of the beast is believed to be in this city. The city is decked out in massive, earthly wealth and material splendor.

The glory of Jesus Christ or God is not found anywhere in Babylon City. Worship of Jesus Christ and God is not found anywhere in the city. The city is home to all sorts of foul, evil/unclean spirits and likewise men. As far as the values of evil men, the great city of Babylon has it all. Everything evil can be found in Babylon City, the “great city.” Nonetheless, Babylon City is crushed within one hour during the Day of the Lord’s return. A massive, worldwide earthquake splits this city into three parts. The destruction so great and consuming, that smoke of her burning can be seen many miles away at sea. Businessmen and merchants don’t want to go anywhere near the “great city” because they are afraid that they might receive the same fate due to association. They lament, because their best customer just got hammered and their gravy train has ended. Thus, their profits and gain have so ended. So much for the “great city.” It was quickly thrown away and destroyed just like a giant millstone thrown into the sea. Never to be found again.

    Commentary: TAKEN IN A LITERAL MANNER, WE SEE THE ONSET AND ARRIVAL OF THE BEAST/ANTICHRIST/ MAN OF SIN ONTO THE STAGE OF THE WORLD, THEN ALL THE WAY TO WHEN HE IS CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE AND BRIMSTONE. However, God is ultimately in control. He is in control of all events, entities and outcomes. He is in control of Satan and the kingdom he sets up on earth, including the beast puppet. As such, these twenty-four (24) attributes attest to God’s divinely organized and abundant organizational arrangement as pertaining to Satan’s beast/antichrist/man of sin.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s transportation and supply chain sector evolution will be a central topic as TOP LEADERS DISCUSS INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES AND ADVANCEMENTS AT THE GLOBAL LOGISTICS FORUM IN RIYADH. 

The event, set to take place from Oct. 12-14, comes as investment in the sector is surging, with a 76 percent increase in new businesses registered in the second quarter of 2024, MAKING LOGISTICS THE FASTEST-GROWING SPHERE IN THE KINGDOM. 

Spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services, the sector is undergoing significant changes to solidify the Kingdom’s pivotal role in global trade. This transformation focuses on using advanced technologies to promote sustainability and improve infrastructure and transportation solutions, the Saudi Press Agency reported. 

THE FORUM HIGHLIGHTS THE KINGDOM’S INITIATIVES TO DEVELOP AND STRENGTHEN LOGISTICS CENTERS, IMPROVING DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL CONNECTIVITY. 

The three-day event is expected to gather over 100 speakers and participants, including industry leaders and government representatives.

This year’s forum will also attract over 10,000 participants from leading global organizations who will address pressing logistics challenges with discussions on sustainability, supply chain resilience, workforce advancement, and technology adoption. 

The agenda includes keynote speeches, dialogue sessions, and bilateral meetings, fostering innovative, sustainable visions for the industry’s future.

THE EVENT FALLS IN LINE WITH SAUDI ARABIA’S STRATEGIC LOCATION AS A TRADE CORRIDOR BETWEEN ASIA, AFRICA, AND EUROPE AND ALIGNS WELL WITH THE NATION’S GOAL TO CONSOLIDATE ITS POSITION AS A GLOBAL LOGISTICS HUB UNDER VISION 2030 AND THE NATIONAL TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS STRATEGY.

The civil aviation sector is equally dynamic, highlighted by the Saudia Group’s record-setting purchase of 105 Airbus planes and growing investment opportunities at airports.

SEVEN-FOLD REFERENCE TO LAKE OF FIRE JUDGEMENT:

1. “He that hath an ear, let hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of THE SECOND DEATH (LAKE OF FIRE).” (Rev. 2:11).
2. “The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he SHALL BE TORMENTED WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever; and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosover receiveth the mark of his name.” (Rev. 14:10-11).
3. “And THE BEAST was taken, and with him THE FALSE PROPHET that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These BOTH WERE CAST ALIVE INTO A LAKE OF FIRE BURNING WITH BRIMSTONE.” (Rev. 19:20).
4. “And the devil that deceived them was cast into THE LAKE OF FIRE AND BRIMSTONE, WHERE THE BEAST AND THE FALSE PROPHET ARE, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” (Rev. 20:10).
5. “And death and hell were cast into THE LAKE OF FIRE. THIS IS THE SECOND DEATH.” (Rev. 20:14).
6. “And whosover was not found written in the book of life WAS CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE.” (Rev. 20:15).
7. “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part IN THE LAKE WHICH BURNETH WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE: WHICH IS THE SECOND DEATH.” (Rev. 21:8).

The lake of fire is also known as the ‘second death’. This is the final place of burning, everlasting torment for Satan, the antichrist, the false prophet and those un-saved, un-believing souls from throughout the ages found NOT to be in the book of life, at the white throne judgement, at the end of the Millennium. The lake of fire and second death are also reserved for those deceived during the Tribulation who took the mark of the beast and worshipped him and his image.

 The evil dead are resurrected to be judged by Christ for their evil works and for their rejection of Him who offered himself for their salvation and forgiveness of their sins. As a result of their sins and judgment, they are cast into the lake of fire that represents a second death (the first death being physical body death and souls/spirits being in Hell). The evil dead are resurrected into bodies and cast into the lake of fire to be severely tormented, having no rest day or night, and are absent from a loving God and their Savior who offered himself for them.

THE GREAT IRONY IS THAT THESE PEOPLE RECEIVED EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANTED. THEY REFUSED CHRIST AND WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM, THEY WANTED TO EXIST IN ETERNITY WITHOUT COMMUNION WITH GOD AND CHRIST, ON THEIR OWN TERMS. THEY LITERALLY RECEIVED WHAT THEY ASKED FOR. THE STENCH OF THEIR PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL TORMENT RISES UP IN SMOKE, FOR ETERNITY.

God made both man and angels as eternal beings, hence they will exist forever in one state or another. Which state will any of us choose to exist in? The choice is up to us, and God grants us the freedom to make that choice for ourselves. For better or worse, we have no one to blame (certainly not God) except ourselves for whatever choices we make on earth.
