SAUDI ARABIAN OFFICIALS SHUT ILLEGAL PILGRIMS OUT OF AIR-CONDITIONED REST AREAS IN MECCA DURING EXTREME HEAT THAT KILLED MORE THAN 1,000 PEOPLE ON HAJJ.

More than half of the deaths were among UNREGISTERED WORSHIPPERS WHO HAD NOT BOUGHT COSTLY PERMITS FOR THE ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE, which all Muslims with the means are encouraged to complete at least once.

THE DEATH TOLL FROM THIS YEAR’S HAJJ EXCEEDED 1,000, DIPLOMATS SAID, AS TEMPERATURES HIT 125.2F (51.8C) IN MECCA THIS WEEK.

“PEOPLE WERE TIRED AFTER BEING CHASED BY SECURITY FORCES BEFORE ARAFAT DAY. They were exhausted,” one Arab diplomat said on Thursday, referring to Saturday’s day-long outdoor prayers that marked the hajj’s climax.

SAUDI AUTHORITIES REPORTED CLEARING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF UNREGISTERED PILGRIMS FROM MECCA EARLIER THIS MONTH, but many still participated in the main rites which began last Friday.

Tens of thousands of pilgrims attempt to perform the hajj, which involves rituals performed in the summer heat, through irregular channels every year because THEY CAN’T AFFORD THE OFFICIAL PERMITS.

WITHOUT OFFICIAL PERMITS, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO ACCESS AIR-CONDITIONED SPACES PROVIDED BY SAUDI AUTHORITIES FOR THE 1.8 (6+6+6)  MILLION AUTHORISED PILGRIMS TO COOL DOWN AFTER HOURS OF WALKING AND PRAYING OUTSIDE.

Friends and family members have been searching for missing pilgrims. They searched hospitals and pleaded online for news, fearing the worst during the scorching temperatures.

Footage on social media showed bodies on the streets and one abandoned on the pavement covered with a sheet of metal. Other videos showed shrouded corpses lined up to be removed.

One witness said bodies lay on the side of the road near Mina, just outside Mecca, covered with the white ihram cloth – a simple garb worn by pilgrims – until medical vehicles arrived.

Saudi Arabia has not provided information on fatalities, although it reported more than 2,700 cases of “heat exhaustion” on Sunday alone.

In one clip shared on social media, a pilgrim blamed the “EXTREMELY POOR MANAGEMENT BY THE SAUDI GOVERNMENT” FOR THE CHAOTIC SCENES.

“AMBULANCES ARE JUST STANDING THERE DOING NOTHING,” he said in the film shot in Mina, which is five miles from Mecca and is famous for its tents housing pilgrims during the pilgrimage.

He said there had been no buses or taxis, which forced pilgrims to walk on foot through the oven-like temperatures.

Wilayet Mustafa, a Pakistani pilgrim, said: “It was so harsh and the people cannot bear that type of heat.”

Saudi Arabia’s extreme heat comes as deadly heatwaves scorch cities in other continents in the Northern Hemisphere.

Blistering high temperatures

Countries around the Mediterranean have endured another week of blistering high temperatures that have contributed to forest fires from Portugal to Greece and along the northern coast of Africa in Algeria, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Earth Observatory.

In Serbia, meteorologists forecast temperatures of around 104F (40C) this week as winds from North Africa propelled a hot front across the Balkans. Health authorities declared a red weather alert and advised people not to venture outdoors.

Europe this year has been contending with a spate of dead and missing tourists amid dangerous heat. A 55-year-old American was found dead on the Greek island of Mathraki, police said on Monday – the third such tourist death in a week.

A heat dome occurs when a strong, high-pressure system traps hot air over a region, preventing cool air from getting in and causing ground temperatures to remain high.

The death toll from this year’s Hajj in Saudi Arabia has exceeded 1,000, according to a new tally by AFP.

The news agency cited an Arab diplomat as saying that more than 658 of the total deaths are from Egypt, with an estimated 630 of them unregistered pilgrims. 

More than half of the fatalities are unregistered, according to AFP. 

Pilgrims who are not registered usually travel with a tourist or work visas, paying significantly lower fees to travel agencies, and do not benefit from Hajj packages that have become increasingly costly.

At least 60 Jordanians are amongst those who have died, according to AFP, as well as 35 Tunisians, according to the country’s foreign ministry.

Indonesia, Iran and Senegal also reported deaths at this year’s Hajj, which began on 14 June, but did not specify if they were heat-related.

Temperatures at the Grand Mosque in Mecca reached 51.8 degrees celsius on Monday, Saudi Arabia’s national meteorology centre said.

Saudi authorities said on Sunday that 2,000 Hajj pilgrims had suffered heat stress. It has not updated the figures since then, and provided no information on fatalities.

Missing pilgrims

Cairo’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday that it was working with Saudi authorities to search for Egyptians who had gone missing during the pilgrimage. 

An Egyptian official who spoke to AFP said the high Egyptian death toll was “absolutely” boosted by unregistered pilgrims. 

“Irregular pilgrims caused great chaos in the Egyptian pilgrims’ camps, causing the collapse of services,” said the official, who is supervising Egypt’s Hajj mission.

“THE PILGRIMS WENT WITHOUT FOOD, WATER OR AIR CONDITIONING FOR A LONG TIME,” THE OFFICIAL SAID, ADDING THAT PEOPLE DIED BECAUSE THEY HAD NO PLACE TO TAKE SHELTER. 

Around 1.8 million pilgrims performed the Hajj this year, of whom 1.6 million were from abroad, according to Saudi authorities. 

On the Day of Arafat, which took place on Saturday, pilgrims spent the whole day near a hill known as Mount Arafat (the Mount of Mercy), where the Prophet Muhammad delivered his final sermon. 

Saudi officials advised pilgrims to use umbrellas, stay hydrated and avoid exposure to the sun during the hottest hours. 

The annual pilgrimage, which is one of the FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM, is increasingly being affected by climate change.

MINA: Muslim pilgrims took part in the SYMBOLIC STONING OF THE DEVIL on Monday in the final ritual of the Hajj, with many doing so in the early hours of the morning to escape the worst of the blazing summer heat.

Temperatures hit 48C by 2pm in Makkah and the holy sites in and around the city, the Saudi National Center for Metrology said.

“Of course, it is something very hard and tiring. THE TEMPERATURE IS ABNORMAL COMPARED TO THE PAST YEARS AND THIS AFFECTS US A LOT,” said Ahmed Al-Baradie, from Egypt.

Carrying an umbrella against the burning sun, Pakistani pilgrim Khoda Bakhch visited the stoning site on Monday morning and planned to return at sunset. “After two or three hours, the heat  may be too much,” he said.

Medics and first responders were deployed in and around Mina to direct and help pilgrims. They treated many people for sunburn on their feet.

Sani Abdullah, a Nigerian, said he was used to heat in his own country. “I am really impressed by the preparations,” he said. “I have never encountered any problems. Everything is going smoothly.”

More than 1.83 million Muslims performed the Hajj this year, slightly fewer than last year’s 1.84 million. They included more than 1.6 million pilgrims from 22 countries, and about 222,000 Saudi citizens and expatriate residents.

Heat waves sweeping the Middle East and Europe’s Mediterranean this month have been made “AT LEAST FIVE TIMES MORE LIKELY” because of human-caused climate change, per new Climate Central analysis.

The big picture: Multiple heat-related deaths have been reported in Greece during the country’s earliest heat wave on record and Jordan’s official news agency said Sunday “14 Jordanian pilgrims died and 17 others were missing” in the searing heat while on the Islamic hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

The idea is to compare real-world conditions with what might have been the case absent human-caused climate change. SAUDI ARABIA HAD A CSI OF 5, meaning that human-caused climate change made a given DAILY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FIVE TIMES MORE LIKELY as of Monday morning. Greece, which has endured two weeks of extreme heat, had a CSI of 5 last week and 2 on Monday. Parts of Turkey had a CSI of 5.

The world’s most water-stressed region can be found in the Middle East and North Africa, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization notes in a statement accompanying a 2023 report that found water stress levels are “expected to worsen for most MENA countries under a ‘business as usual’ climate scenario to 2040.”

Humanitarian nonprofit he Norwegian Refugee Council notes this region is “already overwhelmed by displacement crises” and “the ruinous effects of climate change may push millions towards further displacement as a result of water scarcity, drought and extreme weather.”

At least 1 081 pilgrims were reported dead in ten countries, as of June 20, 2024, as temperatures rose to 51.8 °C (125 °F) causing more than 2 700 cases of extreme heat exhaustion in Saudi Arabia in just one day.

The death toll from this year’s Hajj pilgrimage has surpassed 1 000, with more than half of the deceased being unregistered worshippers who performed the pilgrimage under extreme heat conditions in Saudi Arabia. According to an AFP tally released on Thursday, June 20, new deaths included 58 from Egypt, adding to the total of 658 Egyptians who passed away. Of these, 630 were unregistered pilgrims.

Overall, around ten countries have reported 1 081 deaths during the annual pilgrimage, a fundamental practice in Islam that all Muslims with the means must complete at least once in their lifetime. These figures have been compiled from official statements or from diplomats involved in their countries’ response efforts.

This year’s Hajj began on June 14 and fell during the sweltering Saudi summer, as determined by the lunar Islamic calendar. THE NATIONAL METEOROLOGICAL CENTER REPORTED A HIGH OF 51.8 °C (125 °F) THIS WEEK AT THE GRAND MOSQUE IN MECCA.

“People were tired after being chased by security forces before Arafat day. They were exhausted,” an Arab diplomat told AFP on Thursday, referring to the day-long outdoor prayers on Saturday that marked the Hajj’s climax. The diplomat added that the main cause of death among Egyptian pilgrims was the heat, which triggered complications related to high blood pressure and other issues.

In addition to Egypt, new fatalities were confirmed on Thursday by Pakistan and Indonesia. Pakistan, which had around 150 000 pilgrims, has so far recorded 58 deaths, a diplomat briefed on the tally told AFP. “I think given the number of people, given the weather, this is just natural,” the diplomat said.

Indonesia, which had around 240 000 pilgrims, raised its death toll to 183, according to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, compared with 313 deaths recorded last year. Other countries confirming deaths include Malaysia, India, Jordan, Iran, Senegal, Tunisia, Sudan, and Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region. In many cases, authorities have not specified the cause.

Meanwhile, friends and family members have been searching for pilgrims who are still missing. On Wednesday, June 19, they scoured hospitals and pleaded online for news, fearing the worst in the scorching temperatures.

Saudi authorities have begun the burial process for deceased pilgrims, which involves cleaning the bodies, wrapping them in white burial cloth, and interring them in individual graves. “The burial is done by the Saudi authorities. They have their own system, so we just follow that,” said one diplomat, who noted that his country was working to notify loved ones of the dead as best as it could. Another diplomat mentioned that given the number of fatalities, it would be impossible to notify many families ahead of time, especially in Egypt, which accounts for a significant number of the deceased.

The government of Saudi Arabia has not provided any information on fatalities, though it reported more than 2 700 cases of “heat exhaustion” on Sunday alone.

In 2023, various countries reported more than 300 deaths during the Hajj, mostly Indonesians.

Let us consider the five “I WILLS” of Lucifer as found in Isaiah 14:1314:

 1) “I WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN.” Lucifer wanted to mount up or scale to the heavens. He desired to occupy the highest heavens:  to probe, and to penetrate the kingdom of the infinite God. He wanted to have a very HIGH position!

 2) “I WILL EXALT MY THRONE ABOVE THE STARS OF GOD.” Lucifer’s position and service before God’s throne was not enough. He wanted a throne from which he could exercise final authority and make decisions pertaining to the angelic host (“the stars of God”). He wanted to rule over all the angels. God had made him an exalted angel, but Lucifer wanted to be exalted even more. (He was not content to shine as the “morning star”;  he wanted to shine as the star of stars–with a brilliance that would far outshine all the other stars (even as the sun’s brightness makes all the other stars fade away so that you cannot even see them during daylight hours).

 3) “I WILL SIT ALSO UPON THE MOUNT OF THE CONGREGATION.” He desired to sit or be enthroned in the highest place having all the angelic assemblies in submission to him. He wanted to be the center of attention. He wanted to be IDOLIZED by all.

4) “I WILL ASCEND ABOVE THE HEIGHTS OF THE CLOUDS.” “Clouds” are often used in the Bible to speak of the glory of God (see Matthew 24:30; Acts 1:9; Rev. 1:7). Lucifer coveted God’s glory for his own.  He failed to acknowledge that his glory and beauty all came from and was dependent upon God. In his sinful pride, Lucifer wanted a glory that would impress and dazzle all creatures.

5) “I WILL BE LIKE THE MOST HIGH.” He wanted to be EQUAL with God and to take God’s place as Possessor and Ruler of all. He wanted to become a completely independent creature, responsible to no one.

SIX (6) RESULTS OF ‘PRIDE’: SIX (6) IS THE NUMBER OF IMPERFECTION OR EVIL MAN’KIND.

• Pride causes us to put self on the throne instead of Christ our Savior.

• Pride causes us to not own our sin, nor be broken over it and the damage it causes others in and out of the church.

• Pride keeps us from apologizing to those we have offended.

• Pride keeps us from authentic biblical repentance and restoration.

Satan is the consummate ‘puppet master’, pulling the strings of the beast/antichrist and the false prophet to deceive mankind with his false, evil promises compared to the truth of salvation provided and offered by Jesus Christ.
