Worldwide alarm has been triggered by an outbreak of a deadly new strain of monkeypox – which scientists chillingly warn has “pandemic potential.” In an urgent appeal for international action, experts have expressed fears over another viral crisis following the detection of a mutated version of monkeypox, now known as mpox, in a small town. The worrying revelation came from a study conducted in a mining town in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where authorities have been battling a lethal variation referred to as “clade 1” for approximately a year.This specific strain boasts a horrifying fatality rate – it is estimated to kill around 10 percent of people infected.
The newest mutation, named “clade 1b”, was identified in Kamituga, a town that is home to nearly 14,000 people. Public health directors were put on high alert during a recent meeting held by the Africa Centres for Disease Control, as reported by The Telegraph. Scientists issued a stark warning in their latest report, emphasizing: “Without intervention, this localised Kamituga outbreak harbors the potential to spread nationally and internationally. Given the recent history of mpox outbreaks in DRC, we advocate for swift action by endemic countries and the international community to avert another global mpox outbreak,” reports the Daily Star.
According to the Mirror, the new mutant strain is believed to have initially surfaced in animals before later spreading to humans between July and September last year. In the mining town, around 30 percent of all cases were detected in sex workers. A less severe version of mpox turned into a worldwide epidemic in 2022 after reaching multiple countries, resulting in the deaths of 58 people in the US. It typically causes a mild illness, with fever usually followed by a rash breaking out, primarily on the face. Most individuals recover within four weeks, although the virus can lead to serious illness in rare instances.

Health officials have urged the public to get vaccinated as whooping cough outbreaks spread across the US, Europe, and Asia. Cases of whooping cough have skyrocketed in the UK and Europe since January, marking the largest surge since 2012. In the month of January alone, China reported more than 15,000 (5+5+5) cases, which is a 15 (5+5+5) -fold increase since last year.
And in April, cases of whooping cough have reached schools in California’s San Francisco Bay Area, as well as some isolated cases in Hawaii. In addition, New York City saw an outbreak of more than 200 cases in children from October through early this year. Whooping cough is a very contagious airborne respiratory illness, and it causes a series of cough seizures that can make it difficult for a person to breathe. And in rare cases, it can occur in people who are vaccinated.
Jasmine Reed, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) spokesperson, said to NBC News: “Some US health departments have informed us of local outbreaks, which we expect to see every year. So we are not seeing anything unusual.” While cases of whooping cough dropped in the US during the Covid pandemic due to increased mask wearing and physical distancing, many people did not receive scheduled vaccinations during the pandemic. Dr Thomas Murray, a professor of pediatric infectious disease at Yale School of Medicine, said to NBC: “Where the pandemic may have interrupted the normal cycle of pertussis is people were not getting vaccinated on schedule because families weren’t seeing their physicians as frequently as we would like.”
