LIFE AT 50C: DELHI’S STREETS STRUGGLING TO COPE WITH HEATWAVE
EIGHT MORE DIE AS INDIA FACES LONGEST HEATWAVE
Story by Meryl Sebastian – BBC News, Kochi June 11, 2024
Asevere heatwave continues to wreak havoc in India as the eastern state of Odisha on Monday reported eight deaths within a 72-hour period.
Officials figures released in May suggested 60 people died between March and May across India due to heat-related reasons.
But the number is likely to be much higher as heat-related deaths go under-reported in rural areas.
Officials say India is in the middle of the longest heatwave it has ever seen as temperatures crossed 50C in some areas recently.
“This has been the longest spell because it has been experienced for about 24 days in different parts of the country,” Mrutyunjay Mohapatra of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) told the Indian Express newspaper.
Parts of northern India have been experiencing extreme heat since mid-May, with temperatures hovering between 45-50C in several cities.
Some areas of the country have also been impacted by water shortages, with extreme heat placing huge demands on supplies.
Earlier this month, at least 18 polling officials deployed for the final phase of the general elections died of heat-related illnesses in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states, authorities said.
On 31 May, at least 33 people, including election officials, died of suspected heatstroke in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha.
The monsoon, which hit India’s southern coast in Kerala state on 30 May, is expected to bring some relief as it spreads to northern parts of the country in the coming days.
Is India ready to deal with extreme temperatures?
Heat kills at least 15 in India as temperatures near 50C
The IMD has predicted an above-average monsoon season for the country this year.
But Mr Mohapatra said that “heatwaves will be more frequent, durable and intense, if precautionary or preventive measures are not taken.”
The weather office has predicted heatwave conditions for northwest and eastern India for the next five days.
India is the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, relying heavily on coal to generate power for its needs.
“Human activities, increasing population, industrialisation and transport mechanisms are leading to increased concentration of carbon monoxide, methane and chlorocarbons,” Mr Mohapatra said.
“We are endangering not only ourselves, but also our future generations.”
DELHI UNDER RED ALERT AS EXTREME TEMPERATURES STRIKE NORTHWEST INDIA
Written by Teo Blašković Saturday, May 18, 2024
Parts of northwest India are experiencing severe heatwave conditions on Saturday, May 18, 2024, with the capital New Delhi under a Red alert as very high temperatures strike parts of the country. The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings for several states, anticipating persistent heat wave conditions over the next 5 days.
A severe heatwave has gripped northwest India this week, including the capital New Delhi where a Red alert is in effect as extreme temperatures sweep through. The forecast calls for a gradual rise in temperatures over the next few days in Central India, East India, and Maharashtra, with heatwave conditions expected to persist in specific pockets across different states.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for several states, urging residents in affected regions to remain cautious and apply preventive measures to combat the heat.
The Red alert areas, encompassing West Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, are facing a very high risk of heat-related illnesses and heat strokes in the days ahead, particularly posing a threat to vulnerable individuals. Extreme care and precautionary measures are strongly advised in these regions.
Orange alert areas, including East Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, are experiencing high temperatures and an increased likelihood of heat-related symptoms. Recommendations urge individuals to stay cool, avoid dehydration, and take necessary precautions, especially for vulnerable groups.
In regions under the Yellow alert, such as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat State, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, and Uttarakhand, moderate temperatures prevail with a moderate health concern for vulnerable populations. Guidelines suggest wearing appropriate clothing and staying hydrated to mitigate potential risks.
Recent temperature observations have revealed maximum temperatures exceeding 40 °C (104 °F) in various areas, with temperatures soaring above normal levels by 2 – 4 °C (3.6 – 7.2 °F) in several regions.
On May 17, New Delhi reported temperatures reaching up to a scorching 47.4 °C (117.3 °F) — the highest of the season.
Other areas in the capital experienced similarly high temperatures: Mungeshpur at 46.5 °C (115.7 °F), Aya Nagar at 46.2 °C (115.2 °F), and Jafarpur at 45.9 °C (114.6 °F). Nearby areas such as Noida and Gurugram reported temperatures of 45.2 °C (113.4 °F) and 44.6 °C (112.3 °F), respectively.
Forecasts indicate that maximum temperatures will continue to rise by 2 – 4 °C (3.6 – 7.2 °F) in central India over the next five days, and by 2 – 3 °C (3.6 – 5.4 °F) in East India and Maharashtra over the next three days.
Heat wave conditions are expected to persist in many parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi until May 22. West Uttar Pradesh will experience severe heat wave conditions on May 18 and 19, while East Uttar Pradesh will face similar conditions until May 22.
Isolated pockets in Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha will also experience heat wave conditions.
Amidst the heatwave, several states have announced summer vacations. Delhi, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh are among the states implementing summer breaks to mitigate the impact of the extreme temperatures. Government and government-aided schools in Delhi will have summer vacations from May 11 to June 30. Private schools are expected to follow similar schedules, with most announcing holidays by May 20 or 21.
Rajasthan’s government schools will observe summer vacations from May 17 to June 30, while in Uttar Pradesh, vacations for primary and upper primary students will start on May 20 and continue until June 25 or June 18, depending on the district.
The heatwave coincides with a crucial general election period, raising concerns about health risks for voters and campaigners exposed to the scorching conditions.
Soma Sen Roy, a scientist at the IMD, has urged people to avoid outdoor activities during the afternoon, drink plenty of water, and wear loose-fitting clothes. Special caution is advised for the elderly and other vulnerable populations to stay indoors and hydrated during this period of extreme heat.

A severe heatwave has claimed at least 54 lives across central, eastern, and northern India, over the past couple of days, with record-breaking temperatures affecting regions including Delhi and Bihar.
In Bihar, 32 people died from heatstroke. The fatalities in Bihar include 17 in Aurangabad, 6 in Arrah, 3 each in Gaya and Rohtas, 2 in Buxar, and 1 in Patna.
Odisha reported 10 deaths in Rourkela. In Jharkhand’s Palamu and Rajasthan, 5 people died each, while 1 death was reported in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Additionally, a 40-year-old man from Darbhanga, Bihar, succumbed to heatstroke in Delhi after his body temperature rose to 42.2 °C (108 °F). This was Delhi’s first heat-related death of the year.
Delhi-NCR registered a record-breaking temperature of 52.9 °C (127.2 °F) on May 29, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This temperature, recorded in Mungeshpur, surpassed the previous national record of 51 °C (124 °F) set in Phalodi, Rajasthan, in 2016. However, IMD is currently investigating the accuracy of this reading due to potential sensor errors or local factors.
Delhi’s primary weather station at Safdarjung Observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 46.8 °C (116.2 °F) on May 29, the highest in 79 years. The previous record was 46.7 °C (116.1 °F) on June 17, 1945. On May 30, the maximum temperature in Delhi was slightly lower at 45.6 °C (114.1 °F), still significantly above the normal.
On May 30, IMD reported that maximum temperatures ranged between 45 – 48 °C (113 – 118.4 °F) across many parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and isolated pockets of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, East Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha.
The IMD also indicated that temperatures in the range of 42 – 45 °C (107.6 – 113 °F) were prevalent in parts of West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Gujarat, Telangana, and Rayalaseema. These temperatures were above normal by 3 – 6 °C (5.4 – 10.8 °F) in many regions of Northwest, Central, and East India.
A duststorm is predicted in Uttar Pradesh between May 31 and June 1, and in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on May 31.
The IMD forecasted very light to light rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over the plains of Northwest India from May 31 to June 2.
Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are expected in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha on May 31 and June 1.
Additionally, heatwave conditions are likely in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Uttarakhand on May 31, with hot and humid weather predicted for isolated pockets of Konkan and Goa on May 31 and June 1, and Gangetic West Bengal on May 31. Warm nights are forecasted in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Bihar, and Odisha on May 31 and June 1, and Uttar Pradesh on May 31.
The IMD announced that conditions are favorable for the further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into parts of Lakshadweep, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim over the next two to three days.

DELHI-NCR REGISTERS NATIONAL RECORD-HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 52.9 °C (127.2 °F)
Written byTeo BlaškovićWednesday, May 29, 2024Updated onSunday, June 2, 2024 at 06:33 UTC
Delhi-NCR, India, recorded a national record-high temperature of 52.9 °C (127.2 °F) on May 29, 2024. This record was set at 09:30 UTC (14:30 LT) at the Mungeshpur weather station, breaking the previous record of 51 °C (124 °F) in Rajasthan’s Phalodi town in 2016. IMD is examining the data and sensors at the station, see updates at the end of the article.
Delhi-NCR, India, registered a record-breaking temperature of 52.9 °C (127.2 °F) at 14:30 LT on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This temperature, recorded in the suburb of Mungeshpur, exceeded the previous national record of 51 °C (124 °F) set in Rajasthan’s Phalodi town in 2016.
The extreme heat was briefly alleviated by a sudden weather change, with clouds covering the city and light rain in several parts of Delhi providing significant respite.
On May 28, the Mungeshpur weather station recorded a high of 49.9 °C (121.8 °F). The highest temperature nationwide on May 28 was registered in Churu, West Rajasthan at 50.5 °C (122.9 °F).
The heatwave forced school closures in several cities and increased the risk of heatstrokes for outdoor workers.
In Bihar, several students fainted due to the heat at a government school. Video footage showed a girl being revived with water and manual fanning. “Electrolyte imbalance is causing fainting, vomiting, and dizziness,” said Dr. Rajnikanth Kumar, who treated the students.
Delhi’s Narela area saw residents distributing free cold drinks on Wednesday, where temperatures had reached 49.9 °C (121.8 °F) on Tuesday. Local authorities have restricted water supply due to shortages, imposing fines of 2 000 rupees ($24) for water wastage, such as car washing.
The heatwave claimed three lives on Tuesday in Jaipur, Rajasthan, increasing the death toll to at least 13 in the state, with four in Jaipur alone.
These extreme temperatures coincide with a six-week general election, exacerbating health risks as people wait in long lines to vote. The voting period ends on Saturday. India’s election body made additional arrangements for Delhi voters, including posting paramedics at polling stations due to the heat.
The IMD issued a heatwave warning for Wednesday and Thursday, covering several northern states, including Delhi. Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely over most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and many parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and East Madhya Pradesh. Isolated parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Jammu division are also affected. Himachal Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh are expected to experience isolated heatwave conditions on May 29 and 30.
Simultaneously, conditions continue to favor the onset of the monsoon over Kerala within the next 24 hours. This will also affect parts of the South Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin area, Lakshadweep area, Southwest & Central Bay of Bengal, Northeast Bay of Bengal, and Northeastern states.
Meanwhile, Assam and Meghalaya are forecasted to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on May 29 and heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 30 and June 2.
Updates
05:54 UTC, May 30
IMD is investigating the temperature sensor at the Mungeshpur weather station. The office’s Director General M Mohapatra said the reading of 52.9 °C (127.2 °F) might have been caused by an error in the sensor or due to local factors.
“The maximum temperature over Delhi NCR varied from 45.2 to 49.1 °C (113.4 to 120.4 °F)… Mungeshpur reported 52.9 °C (127.2 °F) as an outlier. IMD is examining the data and sensors,” the IMD said in a statement.
06:30 UTC, June 2
A record temperature of 52.9°C (127.22°F) reported this week in New Delhi was found to be erroneous due to a 3°C (5.4°F) sensor error, according to the Indian government.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) investigated the reading from the Mungeshpur weather station and identified the sensor malfunction, Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju announced.
Corrective measures have been implemented, but no corrected temperature was provided.
Despite this error, the city’s heat record was still broken, with two other weather stations reporting 49°C (120.2°F) and 49.1°C (120.38°F). The previous highest temperature recorded in New Delhi was 48.4°C (119.12°F) in May 1998.
