SAUDI FOREIGN MINISTER ATTENDS BRICS MEETING IN RUSSIA, HOLDS TALKS WITH COUNTERPARTS

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, on Tuesday took part a BRICS OUTREACH MINISTERIAL MEETING IN NIZHNY NOVGOROD, RUSSIA. THE KINGDOM WAS ATTENDING AS A GUEST COUNTRY THAT HAS BEEN INVITED TO JOIN THE GROUP.
During his trip, Prince Faisal will discuss with BRICS COUNTRIES ISSUES AND PRIORITIES OF COMMON INTEREST, DEVELOPMENTS ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE, AND CURRENT GLOBAL CHALLENGES. He will also hold a number of bilateral meetings on the sidelines, reported Saudi Press Agency.
BRICS IS A GROUP OF EMERGING ECONOMIES THAT INCLUDES BRAZIL, RUSSIA, INDIA, CHINA AND SOUTH AFRICA, WHO WERE JOINED AT THE START OF THIS YEAR BY NEW MEMBERS IRAN, EGYPT, ETHIOPIA AND THE UAE. ARGENTINA AND SAUDI ARABIA WERE ALSO INVITED TO JOIN BUT THE FORMER WITHDREW ITS APPLICATION FOLLOWING A CHANGE OF PRESIDENT IN NOVEMBER, AND THE LATTER HAS SAID IT IS STILL CONSIDERING MEMBERSHIP.
The theme of Tuesday’s meeting was “BRICS Dialogue with Developing Countries,” the Kingdom’s Foreign Ministry said. Other Saudi representatives included the ambassador to Russia, Abdulrahman Al-Ahmad, the director general of the foreign minister’s office, Abdulrahman Al-Daoud, and the director general of international organizations, Shaher Al-Khonaini.
Prince Faisal also held talks at the event with Iran’s acting foreign minister, Ali Bagheri, during which they discussed bilateral relations and other issues, including the latest developments in the Gaza Strip, and the city of Rafah in particular.
The prince held separate meetings with his Thai and Brazilian counterparts, Maris Sangiampongsa and Mauro Vieira respectively, during which they DISCUSSED RELATIONS BETWEEN THEIR COUNTRIES AND WAYS IN WHICH THEY MIGHT BE ENHANCED IN VARIOUS FIELDS, AND WAYS TO BOOST BILATERAL AND MULTILATERAL COORDINATION ON ISSUES OF MUTUAL CONCERN.
He also met Sergei Aleinik, the Belarusian foreign minister, to discuss relations and the latest regional and international developments.

BRICS IS PRIORITIZING THE CREATION OF A PLATFORM THAT WILL ENABLE MEMBER STATES TO CONDUCT TRANSACTIONS IN NATIONAL CURRENCIES, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.
Speaking at a meeting of the economic bloc’s foreign ministers in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, Lavrov said BRICS WAS “ACTIVELY WORKING TO IMPLEMENT THE DECISIONS OF THE JOHANNESBURG SUMMIT LAST YEAR, PARTICULARLY WHEN IT COMES TO IMPROVING THE INTERNATIONAL MONETARY AND FINANCIAL SYSTEM, DEVELOPING A PLATFORM FOR SETTLEMENTS IN NATIONAL CURRENCIES IN MUTUAL TRADE.”
He added that the bloc, which recently underwent a process of unprecedented expansion, is also looking to HARMONIZE THE FRAMEWORK OF INTERACTION BETWEEN BRICS PARTNERS.
“Our agenda is extensive. It includes issues that will directly affect THE FUTURE WORLD ORDER BASED ON FAIR GROUNDS,” Lavrov said. Earlier this month, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov revealed that BRICS finance ministers were exploring the possibility of launching A COMMON BLOCKCHAIN-BASED SYSTEM TO FACILITATE FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS.
In January, the head of the Russian central bank, Elvira Nabiullina, noted that the share of Russia’s transactions in national currencies with fellow BRICS countries had increased to 85% – up from 26% two years ago. She also revealed that more countries were having doubts about SWIFT, after many Russian banks were cut off from the Belgium-based financial messaging system following the start of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.
BRICS, WHICH ORIGINALLY COMPRISED BRAZIL, RUSSIA, INDIA, CHINA AND SOUTH AFRICA, WAS JOINED BY IRAN, ETHIOPIA, EGYPT, AND THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES IN EARLY 2024. WHILE SAUDI ARABIA RECEIVED AN OFFICIAL INVITATION TO JOIN THE FORUM IN 2023 AND CONFIRMED ITS INTEREST IN DOING SO, LATER MEDIA REPORTS SUGGESTED THAT THE OIL-RICH STATE WAS STILL CONSIDERING MEMBERSHIP. Argentina was also invited but declined the offer after its President Javier Milei opposed the move.
THE BRICS ECONOMIC BLOC, FORMED IN 2009, HAS PRESENTED ITSELF AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO WESTERN-DOMINATED INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS. ACCORDING TO STATISTA ANALYTICAL COMPANY, BRICS OVERTOOK THE G7 COUNTRIES’ SHARE OF THE WORLD’S TOTAL GDP IN TERMS OF PURCHASING POWER PARITY IN 2020. AS OF 2023, BRICS ACCOUNTED FOR A TOTAL OF 32% OF GLOBAL GDP.
RUSSIA’S MOSCOW EXCHANGE TO STOP TRADING IN DOLLARS AFTER LATEST US SANCTIONS

RUSSIA’S LEADING FINANCIAL MARKETPLACE, THE MOSCOW EXCHANGE, SAID IT WOULD CEASE FOREIGN EXCHANGE TRADING IN DOLLARS AND EUROS IN RESPONSE TO A MAJOR NEW ROUND OF SANCTIONS IMPOSED BY THE UNITED STATES ON WEDNESDAY. THE EXCHANGE ALSO SAID SHARE TRADING AND MONEY MARKET TRADES SETTLED IN DOLLARS AND EUROS WOULD CEASE.
The US Treasury Department announced new sanctions on over 300 entities and individuals aimed at cutting off Russia’s access to products and services needed to sustain military production for its war in Ukraine, including dozens of Chinese suppliers. “Today’s actions strike at their remaining avenues for international materials and equipment, including their reliance on critical supplies from third countries,” said Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. More than 300 targets are on the list, including the Moscow Exchange.
US officials have expressed increasing concern over Russia’s ability to procure advanced semiconductors, optical equipment and other goods needed to produce advanced weapons systems despite prior sanctions.
The sanctions target third party firms and entities, including dozens of suppliers of electronics in China. THE ACTION STOPS SHORT OF IMPOSING SECONDARY SANCTIONS ON BANKS IN CHINA AND OTHER COUNTRIES WHERE TREASURY HAS WARNED THAT DEALINGS WITH RUSSIAN ENTITIES COULD CUT INSTITUTIONS OFF FROM DOLLAR ACCESS.
But the Treasury did say it was modifying the sanctions on previously targeted Russian banks, including VTB and Sberbank, to include branches and subsidiaries in China, India, Hong Kong, Kyrgyzstan and other locations.
