Terrorists attacked a concert hall in the outskirts of Moscow on Friday. Russian state media reported that men armed with automatic weapons and incendiary explosives entered the hall. Unconfirmed videos on social media appeared to depict the men shooting into groups of civilians at close range. At least 133 people were killed and more than 140 wounded in the attack. More than 50 ambulance crews were dispatched to the scene.
Authorities have detained 11 attackers.
Islamic State claimed credit for the attack, posting on Telegram that its “fighters attacked a large gathering of Christians in the city of Krasnogorsk on the outskirts of the Russian capital, Moscow, killing and wounding hundreds and causing great destruction to the place before they withdrew to their bases safely.” The U.S. embassy issued a warning earlier in March that it was monitoring reports that “extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow,” including concerts.
Russia has frequently been the target of Islamist terrorism, including the 2002 Moscow theater siege in which 40 Chechen terrorists took 850 hostages. Ultimately, 132 of the hostages were killed and hundreds injured. John Kirby, White House national security communications advisor, said at a press briefing Friday that the U.S. condemned the attack. “The images are just horrible and hard to watch,” Kirby said. “Our thoughts obviously are going to be with the victims of this terrible shooting attack.”

The president of Tajikistan on Sunday condemned the Moscow concert hall attack in a call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, amid allegations the gunmen were Tajik citizens. Russian media, including Telegram channels with links to the security services, and a lawmaker have alleged that the four suspected assailants were Tajiks. Russian authorities have said only that four suspects arrested after Friday’s attack were foreign nationals and Tajikistan has rejected the initial claims its citizens were involved.
“Terrorists have no nationality, no homeland and no religion,” President Emomali Rahmon told Putin in a phone call, the Tajikistan president’s office said in a statement on Sunday. The language echoed similar previous remarks made by Rahmon regarding extremism. The statement contained no direct reference to reports of the alleged shooters’ citizenship.
ISIS, which has claimed responsibility for the attack, is active in Tajikistan, a Central Asian nation which shares a border with Afghanistan. The Kremlin said on Sunday the two leaders had agreed to “intensify” their joint counter-terrorism efforts.
On Saturday, Tajikistan’s foreign ministry said reports that its citizens were involved were “fake.” The interior ministry also said two of those initially named in Russian media were in Tajikistan at the time of the attack. Putin said on Saturday that 11 people had been arrested over the attack, including the four suspected gunmen, who it said were trying to flee to Ukraine. ISIS has said it was behind the attack on multiple occasions since Friday, though Russian officials have not publicly addressed the claims of responsibility.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Friday condemned a terrorist attack on a concert hall near Moscow that killed and injured dozens of people.
At least 40 people were killed and over 100 hurt when gunmen in camouflage clothing opened fire with automatic weapons on people at a concert in the Crocus City Hall near Moscow on Friday, Russia’s FSB security service said. Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack via its Telegram channels but Russia is yet to make a final assessment on who is behind the incident.
King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman offered their condolences to the Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed Saudi Arabia’s condolences and sympathy with the families of the deceased, and to the Russian government and people for this “painful incident.” The Kingdom stressed the importance of combating all forms of extremism and terrorism, the ministry added. It also called for “security and safety for the Russian Federation and its friendly people, and a speedy recovery for the injured,” the statement said.
Saudi Crown Prince: ‘Terrorism won’t distort Islam’s peaceful image’
The Saudi embassy in Moscow called on citizens to take care and avoid the area around the attack venue, and to adhere to the instructions issued by local authorities. It said citizens can contact the embassy on +79175110815 for emergencies.
The UAE, Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain have also expressed their condemnation of the attack, and extended their sympathy to the victims as well as the Russian government. In statements released through their foreign affairs ministries, the Gulf and Arab states also rejected all forms of violence that ‘undermined security and stability’ and contravene all human and religious values and principles. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms, according to spokesman.

Words of consolation continued to come to Russia from all over the world on Saturday, a day after a major terrorist attack at a concert hall outside Moscow. Friday’s assault on Crocus City Hall in Moscow Region has claimed more than 130 lives and left scores injured.
Messages of support for the Russian people were extended by both national governments and international organizations alike. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres slammed the attack “in the strongest possible terms,” a UN spokesman, Farhan Haq, said in a statement.

The UN chief “conveys his deep condolences to the bereaved families, the people, and the Government of the Russian Federation,” the spokesman added. The UN Security Council also issued a statement on the incident, where it called on all nations to “cooperate actively” with Moscow to hold all those behind “these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.” The international body’s human rights chief, Volker Turk, also said that “nothing can justify such an attack.”
EU Council President Charles Michel said that he “condemns the terrible terrorist attack in Moscow,” adding that “the loss of innocent lives everywhere is a human tragedy.” The bloc’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, also condemned “in the strongest terms the heinous attack perpetrated outside Moscow.” “The international community must remain firmly united against the scourge of terrorism,” he said.
NATO spokesperson Farah Dakhlallah said that the members of the US-led bloc “unequivocally condemn the attacks targeting concertgoers in Moscow.” “Our deepest condolences to the victims and their families,” she said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), adding that “nothing can justify such heinous crimes.”

”France expresses its solidarity with the victims, their loved ones and all the Russian people,” President Emmanuel Macron said, adding that Paris “strongly condemns the terrorist attack claimed by Islamic State.”
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi sent a message of sympathy to Putin on Saturday, stating that Tehran “strongly condemns” Friday evening’s terrorist attack, and called for “serious measures by the international community for punishing the architects and perpetrators of this [act].”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also condemned “the terrible terrorist attack against innocent spectators,” in a post on X, and said that “our thoughts are with the victims’ families and all the wounded.”
“The horror of the massacre of innocent civilians in Moscow is unacceptable,” said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Messages of support and condolence also came from Sweden, Denmark, Spain and Japan, as well as from Syria and the Palestinian Authority.

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday vowed to punish those behind the “barbaric terrorist attack” on a Moscow concert hall that killed more than ‘13’0, saying four gunmen trying to flee to Ukraine had been arrested. Kyiv has strongly denied any connection, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accusing Putin of trying to shift the blame onto them. Putin, in his first public remarks on the attack, made no reference to a statement by the Daesh group claiming responsibility.
At least 133 people were killed when camouflaged gunmen stormed the Crocus City Hall, in Moscow’s northern suburb of Krasnogorsk, and then set fire to the building on Friday evening.
The Daesh group wrote on Telegram Saturday that the attack was “carried out by four Daesh fighters armed with machine guns, a pistol, knives and firebombs,” as part of “the raging war” with “countries fighting Islam.” The video, which lasts 180 (6+6+6) seconds, shows several individuals with blurred faces and garbled voices, armed with assault rifles and knives.

‘Deadliest attack’
It is the deadliest attack in Russia for almost two decades and the deadliest in Europe to have been claimed by Daesh. Russian officials expect the death toll to rise further, with more than 100 wounded in hospital. Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said rescue workers were still pulling bodies from the burnt-out building on Saturday. The emergency situations ministry has so far named 29 of the victims, the blaze having complicated the process of identification.
“Terrorists, murderers, non-humans … have only one unenviable fate: retribution and oblivion,” Putin said in his televised address Saturday. Calling the attack a “barbaric, terrorist act,” he said “all four direct perpetrators … all those who shot and killed people, have been found and detained.”
‘Blame game’
Russian television showed security services interrogating four bloodied men, who spoke Russian with an accent, on a road in the western Bryansk region, which borders both Ukraine and Belarus. “They tried to escape and were traveling toward Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window was prepared for them on the Ukrainian side to cross the state border,” said Putin.
Putin also compared the attackers to “Nazis” and said the attack was an “atrocity, a strike against Russia and our people.”
Zelensky, in his evening address Saturday, dismissed the suggestion that Kyiv had been involved. “What happened yesterday in Moscow is obvious,” he said. “Putin and the other scum are just trying to blame it on someone else.” “They always have the same methods. It has happened before. There have been bombed houses, shootings, and explosions. And they always blame others,” he added.
‘Mourning’
Putin named Sunday a day of national mourning. And he promised: “All the perpetrators, organizers and those who ordered this crime will be justly and inevitably punished.” The Investigative Committee said the death toll had so far reached 133 and the governor of the Moscow region said rescuers would continue to scour the site for “several days.” Some 107 people were still in hospital, many in a critical condition, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said.
Daesh had first claimed responsibility for the attack on Friday night, repeating its claim again on Saturday.
Some witnesses filmed the gunmen from the upper floors as they walked through the stalls shooting people, sharing the footage on social media. Then “the terrorists used a flammable liquid to set fire to the concert hall’s premises, where spectators were located, including wounded,” the Investigative Committee said. Investigators said people died both from gunshot wounds and smoke inhalation after a fire engulfed the 6,000-seater venue.
Investigators said a man who jumped on one of the gunmen as he was shooting at the concert-goers, “immobilizing” him and thus “saving the lives of people around him” would receive an award. Putin did not address Daesh’s claim of responsibility in his first public remarks Saturday, which came more than 18 (6+6+6) hours after the start of the attack.
‘Common terrorist enemy’
But in Washington, a statement from the White House condemning the attack described the Daesh group as a “common terrorist enemy that must be defeated everywhere.” The head of the state-run RT media outlet, Margarita Simonyan, posted two videos of interrogations of two handcuffed suspects. They both admitted to the attack but did not say who had organized it.
The interior ministry said all four of the suspected gunmen were foreign nationals. Russian Telegram channels — including those with links to the security services — said they were from Tajikistan, a country that borders Afghanistan and where the jihadist group is active. Tajikistan’s foreign ministry told Russia’s TASS news agency it was in close contact with Moscow over the matter.
In Moscow, residents stood in long lines in the rain to donate blood for those hospitalized, and mourners came to lay flowers outside the concert hall. Memorial posters featuring a single candle replaced some advertising billboards in the capital and major events were canceled across the country. Statements of condemnation from world leaders continued to roll in.
Just three days earlier, Putin had publicly dismissed a US warning of an “imminent” attack in Moscow as propaganda designed to scare Russian citizens. The US embassy in Russia had warned on March 7 that “extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts,” advising caution over the following 48 hours. Washington said after the attack it had also shared details directly with Moscow. But speaking to FSB chiefs last Tuesday, Putin had called it a “provocative” statement and “outright blackmail… to intimidate and destabilize our society.”
