Meteorologists have warned of heightened wildfire risks across the central US and the nation braces for an unprecedented surge in temperatures.
After a brief period of wintry conditions, a blistering heatwave is predicted in the region, accompanied by gusty winds that could exacerbate fire danger.
By the weekend, temperatures are forecasted to surge 20-40 degrees F above midweek peaks, potentially setting new records in some areas.
May-like warm weather is expected with the onset of meteorological spring, starting on March 1.
Cities like Minneapolis are in for a significant change in temperatures, experiencing a dramatic swing from midweek lows to potentially challenging daily records by Sunday.
The impending storm in the Sierra Nevada, expected to unleash significant snowfall, will contribute to the resurgence of warm air across the Plains and Midwest.
“Strong southerly winds preceding the storm will facilitate the transport of warm air, leading to windy conditions in the central United States,” explained AccuWeather meteorologist Courtney Travis.
The windy, warm conditions raise concerns for wildfires, particularly in regions where rain has been scarce and temperatures have soared above historical averages for February
Travis cautioned: “The combination of warm, dry air and gusty winds heightens the risk of rapidly spreading fires and challenges containment efforts.”
This comes as Texas experiences its second deadliest wildfire on record, which has currently claimed the lives of two people. The fire blazed through 850,000 acres of land in just one day, as fire departments struggled to keep any of it contained.
Residents are urged to refrain from outdoor burning to mitigate the risk of igniting wildfires.
Additionally, motorists along the west-east interstates should exercise caution due to potentially hazardous crosswinds.
